Everything about this place, from the grounds to the employees, was perfection. I was beyond impressed with the service, especially from Wednesday (restaurant manager) and Greg (server). Everyone was extremely friendly and accomodating. The entire place is stunning and every detail has been thought out down to L'Occitane en Provence amenities in each bathroom. The food was also great and the complimentary beignets and coffee in the morning were a great touch. I cannot recommend this inn enough. read more

The atmosphere is lovely. When we arrived at the restaurant there was a group of women celebrating a birthday and looked like they were having great fun. However, the rest of the lunch left something to be desired. We asked to split a crab cake and mussels. The waiter didn't make us feel like they wanted to accommodate the request. The other two girls acted like they were afraid of their own shadow. The mussels were served without any means of serving. When my friend voiced her displeasure, the staff fell all over themselves after it was really too late. They were very nice in offering complimentary desert, which I will say, was the best part of the meal. If the food was better, I'd consider giving it a second chance. But, unfortunately, there are too many other places to try. read more

We got married at The Inn at Willow Grove in July 2017. The moment you step onto the property, you see how beautiful the yellow historic house is and how well maintained the grounds are. Flowers everywhere! Beautiful picturesque backdrops at every angle make for great wedding photos. We ultimately chose to pick The Inn at Willow Grove for a variety reasons: excellent food, gorgeous ceremony garden site, excellent rain plan backup, "the pub" for an on property after party, and "the ruins" which is a stone wall tented area for dancing after dinner. The Inn's coordinator, Gabrielle, is amazing! She was a pleasure to work with. Easy to talk to, always quick to respond to emails, and excellent day of coordinator for our wedding (we did not hire a wedding planner). Our wedding ran very smoothly thanks to her! For our wedding weekend, we loved how we were able to rent out the entire property to our wedding guests. The Inn felt like our historic oasis for our special day. During a recent visit to the newly restored Inn at Willow Grove, my guest and I found our expectations dashed by an unfortunate number of management and culinary gaffes. On arrival, we were kept waiting in the restaurant reception area for several minutes while the staff scurried around us with no apparent understanding of how to acknowledge our reservation. Finally, a person appeared and said, " We're just the owners, we don't know what we're doing." Sadly, this pronouncement became prophetic for the rest of the evening. Twice we were told that a specific person would seat us. Twice that individual failed to materialize. Finally, a third person took us to our table, which was located directly under a loudspeaker blaring show tunes and Tom Jones selections from the 1970s. Our table was also located adjacent to a side door that let in blasts of cold air as curious guests wandered in and out. After fifteen minutes, we were still waiting to find out who would be taking our order. Throughout the meal, the wait staff remained in a perpetual state of confusion regarding their jobs, not knowing if we had received a course, or which course was being served to whom. One bright spot occurred, however, when the wine server knew how to properly open our bottle of champagne. The first course shrimp arrived rubbery and tepid. The second course risotto was so over-salted that it was inedible, and the delicately seasoned timbale made no culinary connection with the lamb whatsoever. While it is not unusual for a new establishment to undergo a period of adjustment, it is also difficult for patrons to have their evening spoiled due to both lackluster service and cuisine while paying a premium price for it. read more

My husband and had the pleasure of spending Thanksgiving at this magical place and couldn't be happier with the results! We had never been to a B&B before because we really prefer contemporary and eclectic styles over traditional and/or antique. We had just decided that hotels were where we were most comfortable, but our friend had recommended this place, so we decided to take a chance. From the moment we arrived we could tell the service was going to be phenomenal and that trend remained until we drove away two days later. From the front desk's warm greeting, to the sommelier's wonderful sense of humor, the bartender who provided us with a personal playlist of his favorite music, to the waiters and waitresses who were perfectly timed with every morsel of delectable food that reached our table to the friendly butler service which delivered French pressed coffee and beignets to our room every morning...do I need to go on? Well, I will...the owners took personal pride in the amazing Inn they've created and got to know us personally. They made us feel welcome while giving us ample space at the same time. We had the unusual opportunity to be able to view almost every room and cottage and there seriously isn't a bad one in the lot. Nothing old here! Every single detail down to the artwork and accessories was hand picked by the owner and as an interior designer, myself I couldn't have been more impressed. Warm, inviting, eclectic and uniquely refurbished to blend with the historic property that it is. Let's just say, if you're on the fence, get off of it and book your stay at this incredible Inn...you will not be disappointed. read more

After reading some of the other reviews here on yelp I am surprised. I recently had dinner here and I would have to say it was one if not the best dining experiences I have ever had. We were a party of 6, and the staff handle us with great professionalism and prompt service. Delivering each course exactly on time. I hate it when restaurants bring the next course when you haven't finished the previous one. 5 star service. Now the restaurant itself, the seating is spacious and well laid out. The decor is sophisticated yet rustic which is perfect for this old plantation style house. Every thing has been remolded, someone invested a large amount of money into this place and it shows. Ambiance and decor 5 stars. And finally the food, after all that is why you go to restaurants. Everyone in the party was pleased with their choices off the menu. I can say that everything I sampled was absolutely delicious. This is not your typical commercial cookie cutter dinning experience, so the prices are higher but they are justified. read more

Went to a wedding here a few weeks back. The wedding venue is beautiful and all of our friends that stayed at the inn said the accommodations were lovely- although very expensive. The wedding had okay service from the servers- I experienced a number of bar tenders that seemed annoyed to be working a wedding or annoyed that I wanted a drink? The dinner we got was very tasty and probably some of the best wedding food I have had. Overall- a beautiful location with some hiccups in service that will hopefully be ironed out so that the price does not seem so steep! read more

My husband and I received a gift certificate as a wedding gift. Our room was absolutely amazing and the staff was so kind. My only negative would be the food, the restaurant was beautiful and we loved siting at the bar and having a couple drinks but when it came time to be seated at our table our food ended up being very salty and not worth the price. We did not stay in the main house or the boutique cottages, but rather the "cottages" about 100 yards across the parking lot from the main building. In reality, these are triplexes, or pentaplexes, if you count the two rooms below, as these 2 buildings are built into the side of a hill. You begin in a hallway, from which you enter one of 3 rooms on the main level. Though the view is of an expansive lawn backed by trees, the near-constant buzz of steady traffic on nearby Route 15 renders quiet use of the private porches impossible. As to cleanliness, at $338/night, we were surprised to find small stains on the carpet and the bed sheets, along with several holes in the bottom sheet. The porch chairs were ringed in mold or mildew and apparently had not been cleaned in some time. Also, the window curtain is not a blackout curtain, so the direct morning sun brightens the room considerably. Bathroom suggestion: add one or two wall hooks, perhaps on the back of the door and adjacent to the shower door, so clothing and towels are easy to reach. The solo hook away from the shower and over six feet off the floor is inadequate. Speaking of storing clothes, is it necessary to provide only closet hangars that cannot be removed? Attempting to hang clothes - especially while navigating the sizable refrigerator in the closet - is unnecessarily difficult. Consider switching to "Wooden Anti-Theft Hangers" if thievery is that much of an issue. Finally, staff ignore "Do Not Disturb" signs when delivering morning coffee at the pre-arranged time. Instead of leaving it at the door or on the nearby table, they banged on the door on 2 out of 3 mornings. Inasmuch as guests know delivery times in advance, there is no need to disturb all 3 rooms on the hall. read more

So, I recently read an article about The Inn at Willow Grove in Orange County VA. It was a great review a few months ago in The Washington Post and needed to check it out for myself. I am a retired chef and sommelier and I am always looking for hip new places to dine w/my partner. In addition, I write free-lance reviews for various papers and blogs. I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE DISAPPOINTED IN A RESTAURANT'S SERVICE IN MY WHOLE LIFE!! For starters, I had a few questions about the wine list and the "sommelier" was nowhere to be found. So, fine, I passed on a great bottle of wine. My server, Mindy, (I think) was very good. She several times told me that her manager would be by to show off their great wine list, never happened. So, on to the food. My partner ordered french toast, this absurd Texas toast loaf looking thing. He actually liked it. My sister ordered the "Benediction", an offshoot of eggs benedict with crab cake. Sounds delicious, right? It just may have been if the eggs weren't so obviously overcooked. We got the waitress' attention and asked if there was anything to be done and she again tried to find what appeared to be this imaginary boss of hers, like a bad lie. So, my sister decided it wasn't worth waiting for and we continued to dine. Finally, when we were almost ready to leave, a what sounded like broken french-speaking gentleman came by and inquired about the eggs and my sister told him the problem. We thought for sure he would offer us a new dish or a complimentary something, but, it wasn't to be. He looked at us like we were peasants and acted like we didn't know what we were talking about!! Again disappointed when the bill came that it wasn't at least left off the tab, $18+ for hard boiled eggs! He walked away with his nose in the air like one of those animated french guys in the comics. I have never been more angry leaving ANY restaurant! I hear this place is shooting for 5 stars, well they can keep dreaming! DO NOT EAT HERE! read more

My wife and I just returned from a two day trip at the Inn. We stayed in one of the beautiful cottages. It was inviting in the design and the comfort level it conveyed. The service was impeccable, the staff reflected the same warmth and familiarity as the cottage. The grounds are absolutely lovely with the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are some surprise wineries minutes away and it's great to drive the country roads. All of this adds up to relaxation from the hustle and bustle of Route 95, 495, and other metropolitan clogged highway. The restaurant Vintage was a pleasant surprise. Vintage was a reflection of the Inn"s general ambience of comfortably elegant, black tie or jeans. The food was excellent in quality and presentation. Disclaimer: I don't normally write reviews. I have eaten lunch here a few times and took a colleague here for drinks and a snack at the bar. I love the decor here-- very Christian Liagre, with low leather banquettes, stone walls and nice art. We had dinner at the Vintage restaurant, we did not stay at the Inn. The location and estate are gorgeous. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Our favorite dishes were the cheese plate (the Bermuda triangle cheese was the best imo, the home made dipping sauces and pita bread were delicious) and the scallops (buttery and perfectly cooked, served with cheese grits). They have a good cocktail menu too. The white sangria was the perfect summer drink. read more

I recently stayed at the Inn and had dinner there as well. When I checked in, I was handed a paper explaining that their guest rooms are infested with stink bugs and that they apologize for any inconvenience. I can honestly say that the Inn provided the worst night I've ever had in a hotel. From waking up to the sound of insects buzzing by, to finding a stink bug swimming in my Waterford water glass, this plaque ruined my visit. DO NOT STAY THERE! The restaurant attempts to deliver a fine dining experience, but they failed miserably on service. They "forgot" one of our courses and most of the wait staff seemed...under-trained. I would give the Inn 1 star and 3 stars for the restaurant. read more

Very beautiful decor with a lovely dining atmosphere. Food was artfully plated, creative, and had a pleasing flavor profile. We had had all tapas for dinner. The best were the asparagus and oyster mushroom au gratin, "French onion dip" sliders, frisee salad with butternut squash, blackened diver scallops, halibut taco, and beef tenderloin. The brown sugar-roasted onion, fresh thyme and beluga lentils, carrot purée, and truffle butter was tasteless with not much texture. The spring water was very refreshing. This place was beyond my expectations awesome. The food was incredible and i am not one to say that easily. The french toast is heaven and poached eggs spot on. The kitchen is king! They hooked up the room with the balcony and we felt like downton abbey! The staff helped us find some local hiking trails and when we returned, our bed was turned down (say what now) AND ther was dessert waiting with tea. They were generous with bottles of water which was a nice touch. I could have slep on the heated floors of the bathroom! Slept like a dream on mega bed. Staff was very accomadating and polite. Oh, and their french press coffee? Be still my heart. We cant wait to visit again! read more

We decided to give the restaurant at The Inn at Willow Grove (Vintage) a second chance, as our first visit was less than positive (food and service), but the spa was wonderful. We had made a reservation in advance, but upon arrival, we were told no tables were available despite the fact that we could see about a third of the restaurant empty. We had to wait 45 minutes before finally being sat in the banquet section and not the regular restaurant. During this time several people who were obviously known by the manager arrived and were sat in the regular restaurant. We felt that management does not care about out of town visitors due to the way they dismissed our concerns, and the restaurant staff seemed very unhappy generally based on our observations of them while we waited at the bar. Unfortunately for us, the second time was not the charm for us at Vintage, and we won't be back. We really don't think the management cares if we don't return, however. Although our second visit to the spa was again excellent, the restaurant experience was very poor. Save your time and money, and find another weekend destination unless you are only interested in the spa. Next time we will keep driving from Richmond until we reach The Homestead. read more

This place was incredible; arguably the nicest place my wife and I have ever stayed. She surprised me with reservations for our anniversary along with a couples massage. We arrived to check-in and were upgraded (likely since we were staying on a non-holiday Sunday night) to the butler suite. Our massage was amazing (my first) and was followed by the butler service to our cottage with an awaiting cheese & fruit platter. The cottage was wonderful with heated floors in the bathroom, a fireplace in the bedroom, and a deck with a beautiful view to enjoy our afternoon snack. While we were at dinner at the German Restaurant in Madison, they turned down the bed for us and left tea, hot chocolate, and a sweet desert for us to enjoy. In the morning they brought us coffee and Beignets and gave us coupons for the local wineries. The grounds are amazing, especially if you walk up the hill to the overlook of the Shenandoah Mountains. I would highly recommend this place as a wedding venue or a weekend getaway. The price is well worth the amazing service and accommodations. read more

Wow! My husband & I went to dinner here for the first time and were surprised at every turn. When walking up to the Inn it is a beautiful site to take in and see. Absolutely beautiful! The interior is just as amazing and nicely appointed with art and furnishings. The extra touches with tiny candles in the windows, toasty fireplaces, soft lighting, and renovations still staying with the original colonial flare. The staff, wait & mgr. were very friendly, well trained, & knowledgeable about food and wines. The chef's cooking was one of the best we have had in quite awhile & that is comparing to Inn at Little Washington but here without that price. The food had layers of delicious fresh tastes. There is a separate bar room if you get there early and it looked very relaxing and well appointed. We will be Back many times!! read more

I don't often write reviews but I can't say enough wonderful things about this venue and the staff here!! My husband and I attended a wedding here a couple of weeks ago and it was by far one of the best wedding receptions we've been to- we're STILL telling friends and family about it! Everything from the Inn, to the beautiful barn where the dinner was held, and the Ruins where the bar and dancing were set up, was just on point. It ended up raining most of the reception but that didn't stop anyone from enjoying the evening! I'd like to mention, the food that was served was some of the best food we've ever had. My husband is a bit of a picky eater and there wasn't one thing he didn't like. The presentation and the flavors were just amazing. We especially liked the crab cakes, which seemed to be a huge hit with everyone because they could hardly keep them on the hors d'oeuvres platter long enough to get through the door! My husband and I both had the beef choice for dinner and it was excellent and we were surprised how warm the food was considering the size of the group. Last, but definitely NOT least, the service was outstanding! The staff was efficient, gracious, and polite and they were definitely on top of things. Everything ran so smoothly and despite the pouring rain, they did it with smiles. I also had the chance to briefly talk to Lynn, who was their Event Manager, and she was an absolute gem- very accommodating and funny! There wasn't a point I saw her stand still, and again, always with a smile. Even my husband commented that it was refreshing to see a staff that really looked like they enjoyed what they do. The fact that he noticed (after several cocktails!) and actually said something was when I knew I had to write a review. Can't recommend this place enough!! read more

We had a great experience at the Pub. The service was friendly and welcoming. My friend and I each had the mushroom soup, split a cheese plate, and had an entree. We were there as guests for my sisters wedding and everything from start to finish was well organized, the entire staff was incredibly friendly and the venue was gorgeous. Lynne and her team were so attentive and anytime anything was asked, Lynne and company made the request happen with smiles on their faces. At no point did we feel like our requests were burdens or too much. From helping with another sisters baby to making sure my mom had her diet cokes, the service was top notch - talk about going above and beyond! One small detail I truly appreciated was when speaking to Lynne and complementing her work, she made it very clear that the work was a collaboration of her and her team. She made sure they received credit for their work. That is the sign a great leader - someone who ensures others receive the credit for the behind the scenes work that not everyone sees. My cousin and her fiance recently had their wedding at The Inn. The staff there did a really nice job! They were very attentive (they served hor d'oeuvres - deep fried shrimp balls and some other vegetarian dishes) while we all waited to be seated for dinner. Dinner consisted of flank steak on a bed of custom-made macaroni and cheese with pesto sauce (it was incredible!) and a lemon chicken dish. The location and setting was perfect for a wedding, and the grounds are immaculately kept. Kudos to my cousin and the staff at The Inn for pulling off a very nice event. Arriving cold from an inn you have never visited before can be unnerving, even to one that has been thoroughy described by Yelp. So we were surprised & delighted to discover this prize, on 38 acres just outside the unprepossessing town of Orange, Va, The glorious facade -- the inn goes back to the l8th century - and the fact that it has a well recommended restaurant,convinced us to take the plunge. What is not clear is that this Inn has numerous small cottages in clusters, for not much more than the price of a room elsewhere. Also, that although it is l8th century its interior decor has ignored this -- the furnishings are international modern, ie leather upholstery, lots of steel & glass, abstract paintings & severe, almost monochromatic color schemes of muddy browns & oatmeal walls that to me were out of context with its elegant architecture.. If the interiors looked severe, the creature comforts made up for that in short order. A private balcony facing lawns & trees led off our room. There was a fireplace inside, a coffee maker, a small sink, useful refrigerator; there were generous assortments of pillows & towels, a heated bathroom floor and many other unlooked -for luxuries. This is the kind of place where they turn down your beds for the night, spring to respond to your slightest wish, & deliver coffee & beignets, (miniature donuts), when you awaken -- along with 2 morning papers. As for the food, rather over-described on the menu, we had no idea what we were eating but everything was delicious. The inn compares favorably with a first-class hotel anywhere in the world. Terrible service. Small portions. Got there for the happy hour specials at 4:30 they told me they aren't ready yet restaurant opens at 3! They didn't have happy hour but gave me a lunch menu. So at 5pm oddly enough I was sitting there ordering off a lunch menu with limited selections and high prices. The food came and what a huge disappointment ! Tiny portions , avocado was my main dish it was tiny and so under ripe I couldn't even eat it! Their web site says they use fresh local in season produce. Ok all the farms within a few miles of this place selling tomatoes in August and fresh produce the only veggie item was avocado from Peru! Really? Get a new chef. It seems like a young crowd worker he bar and restaurant and I assume a very amateur chef as well. There were other guests of the hotel sitting one table over from me having a drink and when they saw my food delivered to my table they immediately looked on yelp for another restaurant to go dine at that evening. Smart move as the food here was horrendous ! I ordered another dish as I was still hungry and the fish taco entree came out with two small flour tortillas and two tiny pieces of fish between the 2! Oh my goodness really for $18 you have the nerve to serve this to me? By then I figured I'd just drink another glass of wine and call it a night. Well I was the the only table in the entire restaurant and no one came to wait on me for over 30 minutes!! Ok no glass of wine! Seriously I dine out 3-5 times a week for work and 2 times socially and this was the worst service and food I've ever had! The decor is great but when the food and service is horrible who cares how cute the place looks! I will not recommend the restaurant if you stay at the lovely inn look elsewhere for food. Don't let the fancy cook decor of the restaurant lure you in for anything other than a cocktail. And one drink that's all you get since staff disappears to go mow the lawn or something on this huge property. Awful! 2 thumbs down huge disappointing dining lack -of-an-experience all around. The Inn at Willow Grove provided the perfect location for our first getaway as husband and wife. I have been lucky in enough to travel all over the world and the Inn at Willow Grove EXCEEDED any hotel/resort/inn I have stayed at in Dubai, Bora Bora, Europe, or anywhere else for that matter. Charlene and David have succeeded transforming a historical location with an intriguing past into a serene oasis without compromising on modern luxuries, such as heated floors, gas fire places, and out door fire pits. The staff including Stephen, Jamie, and Carlos where all exceptional attentive. I lost my voice during out stay and everyone was genuinely concerned offering tea and cough drops, its the little things that count. Jason's food, as other have comment was scrumptious, and I can't wait to go back and have one of his burgers. In fact, while on first trip to the Inn my husband and I made plans to return in the fall. I can't wait. read more

I took my parents here for dinner to show them how wonderful Virginia's farm-to-table cuisine is. Vintage did not disappoint. Impeccable service, food, wine, and ambience. Stacey was our server, and she was incredibly attentive and seemed to anticipate our every need. I have a gluten allergy, which is usually an issue, but the chef created remarkable dishes for me. The whole meal was spectacular, and I even got to take home some homemade cornbread and honey butter for breakfast tomorrow. My husband and I just found our new date-night go to! I ate at Vintage Restaurant last night with three friends. The restaurant is beautiful with cozy rooms for parties of six or so, and a lovely main dining room. My friends were vegan and rather than order the one vegan menu option which included tofu, they asked if the chef could provide something else. Our server was patient and responsive and went to check. The chef said he could provide the vegan option he was giving an upstairs wedding party. We ordered spinach salad to start, which came in a salad bowl with plates and was dished out by our server. Very nice, although there were a few too many capers. I ordered the scallops and the dish was gorgeous to look at, with intriguing flavors. Really delicious. Unfortunately the vegan option was disappointing. It was supposed to be a mushroom ragu over potatoes and spinach. I tried it and the ragu was delicious. However, there were hardly any mushrooms and the ragu was mixed into large wedges of potatoes and piled into individual bowls, looking crammed and unappetizing. No garnish, looked like mom's cooking on a bad day. It was such a contrast to the beautiful presentation of my scallops, it didn't even look like we were eating in the same restaurant. Our server gave an excellent wine recommendation that went with both entrees, the service was attentive but not intrusive, and as I said, the setting was lovely. My suggestion would be to stick to the menu and miss it if you're vegan or vegetarian. read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend getaway to this gorgeously appointed property. The staff attends to every need. From the welcome of cold prosecco, to turn down service accompanied by hot tea and a sweet treat...to morning french press and fresh hot beignets...wow! The rooms are quiet and beautifully decorated but not the least bit stuffy. Every amenity is thoughtfully provided. Many of the rooms/suites are in nearby outbuildings providing privacy and seclusion. Perfect for some well deserved downtime and utter relaxation. The Inn was lovely, and our room in Overlook East was equally lovely. And the food at the Vintage restaurant was quite good. But I was expecting the experience to be at the level of the Inn at Little Washington given the high ranking as the #1 inn in the South, and it disappointed us there. There was a surprising lack of utensils to eat with :) where we were given a very sweet birthday dessert treat in the room but nothing to eat it with, we ordered dessert at dinner and didn't get anything to eat it with until the waitress came back to see how we enjoyed it (they comped us that dessert), the morning coffee came without spoons so we just stirred with forks...kind of kooky. The promised local soap in the bathroom wasn't there, there were moldy berries in our breakfast fruit...first world problems, I know, but just not as magical as I'd hoped. We'll go back to the Inn at Little Washington next time. But the Inn at Willow Grove is truly lovely, and the food was very good, so hopefully they'll work out these kinks and we'll return. read more

My wife and I were on our way to the Early Mountain winery and we saw this place on the side of the road and a sign was posted saying open for lunch and dinner so we changed plans and decided to have lunch here. The house, grounds, and interior are gorgeous. It was a Saturday afternoon and the place was not at all crowded. The wait staff was superb. We had calamari for a starter and it was plentiful, coming with two sauces on the side, a tomato based sauce and an aioli sauce. All was delicious. We had as our main course crab atop a garlic corn cracker and the ravioli. The crab was delicious however the ravioli had a vinegary taste to it and there was only 1 ravioli! For dessert we had cookie dough creme brûlée. When it came time for the bill I jokingly said that they should have called my dish raviola instead of ravioli since there was only one piece. They took it to heart and actually gave me the ravioli dish for free. I thanked them but decided to add the price of the dish to my tip just because they were so welcoming. My experience at the Inn at Willow Grove had so many ups and downs that it is difficult to provide a coherent rating. At check-in, I realized I had forgotten my gift certificate, which was for an overnight package. The management had no way to look it up (do they really sell so many?), so we had to pay full price on the spot and overnight mail the gift certificate upon our return home, then wait for the refund--that put a real damper on things for me from the start. The cottage was lovely and perfect, but my husband wanted to spend most of his time at the bar, so we didn't do much in the cottage other than change our clothes and sleep. We went nowhere else--just stayed on the property for about 24 hours. The bar was friendly and cool, but the food was only so-so. I ordered the Devils On Horseback, and the oysters tasted like that morning's beignets (obviously fried in the same oil). My husband often asks me to consider going back, but for the money, the experience did not rank high, so I'd just prefer to try other places. read more
