Early evening we walked in looking for the ice cream that had been advertised on the road and were seated in their dining room. It was just before the dinner rush so we had the room to ourselves and our waitress was incredibly attentive. We ordered based solely off of her recommendations and were not disappointed in the slightest! The ice cream was creamy and deserving of its awards. The sticky toffee pudding... I hate the idea of writing a negative review because I wanted to like this place so much, but I want to be honest. I stayed here for 2 nights while I was in town for a wedding at the Lydia Mountain Lodge. I had called Friday afternoon to let them know I might not make it there in time for the short time of check in (4-7 PM). They said they'd tape an envelope with my keys to the back door if I got there after 7. I arrived around 7:30 and looked all over to find the keys in an envelope but gave up. Luckily the staff was still there due to an event. I was able to track someone down, got my keys and was led to my room. Now the room was where I really got disappointed. Let me preface this with saying I love staying at older hotels and B&Bs. I love the historical charm and colonial furniture, but I still expect the place to be clean. The place was pretty dusty and I found a collection of tiny spiders on the window next to my door, on the inside. I didn't feel clean in here. The room I was staying in, Washington Suite, was on the main floor with an outside entrance, facing the street. Due to this, there was a lot of noise. I could hear people leaving the event, the cars on the street, and the people staying above me. The place also feeds stray/outdoor cats, which is very cute but not allergy friendly. Also found one on top of my car when I went to leave. Left dirty paw prints on my windshield. What really was the tipping point for me was when I went into the bathroom before checking out. Right on the door frame was a giant spider-looking creature. I thought it was a wolf spider before researching after getting home that it was a spider cricket. I would have preferred to speak about these issues to a manager but the only staff I interacted with the entire time were those working the restaurant. They never came in to my room to refresh towels or anything either which was disappointing. Speaking of the restaurant, the food was pretty good. If I was rating only the food, I'd give the place a 4/5. The French toast is delicious as are the breakfast potatoes. The grits are pretty bad (very dry) and the Mac and cheese was too runny, and the coffee was some of the worst I think I've ever had. Long story short, eat here but don't stay here. What a wonderful place in the middle of nowhere!!! With the goal of staying in a haunted hotel during Halloween weekend, we stayed here on a Thursday night. Our room was a suite with 2 beds in the bedroom. You had to go through the bathroom to get to the bedroom and it was very spacious. The rooms had that historic feel. Beds were very comfortable and I loved the electric fireplaces. There was a refrigerator and complimentary champagne (half splits). There was no TV in the bedroom and the tv in the living room had limited channels. Would have liked there to be a lot more. We had dinner (paid) and breakfast (complimentary) at the restaurant. For dinner, we had seared scallops, mushroom risotto, and a salad. Everything was delicious. Even the rolls that came with dinner. For breakfast, I had the french toast, eggs, and grits. Again, very good. I asked for a mimosa (at a charge) and they were accommodating. I really enjoyed my meal. As far as ghosts, we separately heard some odd things in the room but it's an old hotel, it could be anything! Be warned, that as far as local businesses, not much was open on the block of the hotel, the morning we left. And certainly nothing was opened the night we got in. The food came out cold , the scallops over cooked, the broccoli was bland with no seasoning,, the meat was not at all appealing. Great Mother's Day dinner at the Lafayette Inn! Nestled in the historic district of Stanardsville, the Lafayette Inn is a great spot to celebrate with a meal. My wife made reservations for the family to celebrate Mother's Day with her mother. We had early reservations at 4:30, so we had the dining room to ourselves. While the menu isn't large, it has something for everyone. Steak, chicken, seafood, and vegetarian options are all available. I started with the Grilled Romaine Wedge. Not so much of an actual wedge, but all of the components. If you sub in the grilled romaine, it was perfect. Great flavor of the blue cheese and bacon paired with a slight smoke and grill marks. For my entrée I ordered the Shrimp and Corn Risotto. I wouldn't consider it spicy, even though it was described as lightly spiced. It was the perfect rich meal for a colder May afternoon. The corn gave the risotto nice texture and the shrimp were cooked well. I capped the night off with a Nightingale Ice Cream sandwich. Based out of Baltimore, it is a struggle to find outside of the area. The Lafayette is one of the only places that carries them locally. The cookie monster is one of my favorites! Fantastic Mother's Day meal at Lafayette Inn. The food is always on point with attentive service. It was fun to try a bite of each dish as there were 5 of us and we all ordered different entrees. Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo of the grilled romaine wedge or the shrimp and corn risotto. The filet stack is a staple, but the scallops and mushroom risotto was divine. Then, came the sticky toffee cake, pineapple upside down cake, ice cream, and a Nightingale ice cream sandwich (Lafayette is the only place close by that sells them). What a cute little gem, right outside of Shenandoah State Park! We stopped for lunch after a long challenging hike. I ordered the surf and turf, which was a crab cake and 7 oz steak. I really enjoyed it! The butter could have been a touch melted, but ultimately the taste was right on. The best part of the meal? The homemade ice cream. Now, I don't even like ice cream, but I may dream about this for the rest of my life! If you order nothing else, stop in for this! My husband did not care much for his burger, but he's picky. Said it tasted like Burger King, and he doesn't like flame-broiled. My daughter got the couscous salad and it was amazing! My only negative? The creepy man statue at the top of the stairs. We had not been here for dinner in a few years and felt it was recently time to return and we did, with friends. One reason we hadn't returned was that we noticed we never saw them on a certain social media review site and so I did some work to find that they were listed solely as a B&B, not as a restaurant also. So, after reaching out to aforementioned social site, they fixed this... Hoping the business picks up a little at this beautiful restaurant, set in a very old, historic building. They have an amazing menu here, it's always loaded with tons of favorites, including some really nicely prepared steaks! They also have a very nice wine list, which often includes amazing deals on special wines, which are sold for nearly the same price you can get them from the store! Menu is varied with specials of the day using local fare. Ambiance is very pleasant while dining in a comfortably spaced dining room to not overhear the next table. Two grand fireplaces grace the dining room at each end which are burning during the cool winter evening. The inn is well over 100 years old. The experience was a bit weird as a first-timer not knowing how the place operated. I was confused on how to be seated. Anywho, there were some gluten-free options, but not too many, especially for children. Also, I asked multiple times if certain things were gluten-free, and was told they were, but then I heard the waitress ask the kitchen. The waitress was so-so friendly, as she did check in a bit, but did ask another waitress for assistance. The staff didn't really seem interested in myself or my son, more so the other tables. I get the vibe that this place isn't kid-friendly. I did not feel welcome. Lastly, did not enjoy the bathroom being upstairs. I did not see an elevator if someone was wheelchair bound. The "guy" at the top of the stairs is creepy (statue). However, overall the food was good. I appreciate the water at the table in a glass bottle with lemon. Also, the reusable napkins. Was really looking forward to getting dinner from here after a day of hiking. We ordered carryout online from their website and received an email that our order hadn't been confirmed so we called and confirmed our order directly with the restaurant, but when we went to pick it up they said they had just given our order to someone else by accident so we had to wait for them to remake it. They gave us complimentary dessert for the inconvenience. We ordered for takeout through their website and I ended up ordering way more food than I should have for 2 people because everything sounded so good I couldn't decide. When we arrived the servers were very nice and immediately when to check in on our order because we got there a little early. They have a few outdoor small bistro-like tables on the side of the inn and in the back by the parking lot for takeout. We took ours back to our Airbnb and I inhaled everything as soon as we sat down. The reputation and price are reminiscent of something past. On a weekday evening we wanted to sit outside. They hadn't thought at all about making the upstairs porch dining friendly on a warm evening during the pandemic???! No decor at all and a commercial utility fan blowing hot air from the sunny street and across the kitchen vent fan. Our server was really great through all our requests and deserved the 20% tip. The salad was diverse & fresh and the champagne vinagrette quite nice. The appetizer scallops were lightly cooked but not seared so they had little flavor and the wilted spinach they sat on was also very bland. Lemon chicken with capers was quite flavorful but the chicken was average. Steamed brocolli was spot on tender crisp but no butter. They used a commercial ravioli that was advertised as 3 cheese with gorgonzola that should have been piquant to go with the pretty good vodka sauce. Instead it too was very bland and we didn't enjoy the pasta around the cheese either. To top it off there were no housemade desserts that evening. Celebrated our 46th anniversary with dinner at the Lafayette Inn. We enjoyed the filet duo, the chicken special, a wedge salad, and a grits appetizer. The grits were done three ways, with pesto, gouda, and a raspberry sauce. The filet was the perfect temperature and fork tender as usual. No matter how hard I try, I can't recreate the herb butter on the filet or the honey butter that is served with the rolls. The servers were friendly and attentive. Sad face. My wife and I attended the Virginia Clay Festival a couple of miles away and stayed at a B&B another couple of miles away. My son decided to visit us w/his girlfriend from Harrisonburg, so we expanded our original reservation from 2 to 4 (which they easily and happily accommodated). We were seated promptly and attended to promptly. That's when it started down the slippery slope of less than stellar service. They had two waitstaff that covered all of the tables (12, with 5 or so occupied). Not sure whether it was that the two weren't communicating or an issue of a lack of awareness, but we were consistently interrupted in our dialogue. Pushy would be too strong, but overattentive -- definitely. One of my biggest pet peeves is that a waitperson should follow the interaction at the table and not insert themselves into discussion casually. While the appetizers and drinks were good, my wife and I ordered the special -- a chicken piccata on fettuccini. While the noodles and sauce were amazing, the chicken couldn't have been worse. It was painfully chewy / tough and almost dry. I won't hazard a guess as to why, but I have cooked countless chicken breasts on my Weber for 15 years, and I'd be appalled if my guests had to endure what I did. Not just tough, but the little part (sorry I don't know what it is) that is kind of like a tendon that hangs down, was still on the chicken! :-(. Double sad face. LAFAYETTE IS AN UNASSUMING QUAINT LITTLE RESTAURANT THAT COMES IN CLUTCH JUST LIKE THE GENERAL DID I came here because they were the only place on Yelp with at least 4 stars that had an open reservation for my last minute Valentine's Day plan. Boy did I discover the Charlottesville area's hidden gem. The restaurant is located in a very quiet rural part of central Virginia at the floor of a pretty average looking inn. Stepping into the dining room, I was thoroughly impressed with red velvet lined chairs, two active fireplaces at either side of the room, and a myriad of paintings, trinkets, and antiques lining the walls that made me feel like I might be stepping into where TJ and Ben Franklin himself were having some clandestine meetings during the American Revolution. The waitresses did not seem to have any specific zones or tables, which made it really nice because it meant that we didn't have to wait for any one particular person to take our orders, deliver our food, or refill our glasses. They were all equally pleasant, and more than willing to offer suggestions and food/drink pairings upon request. They have an extensive wine selection, with bottles ranging from ~$30 to upwards of ~$120+. All available beer was bottled and from local Virginia breweries, but at $5 a bottle for some local Virginia craft beer, I was never thirsty. The menu has a lot to offer; appetizers and salads seemed to cover a broad spectrum of tastes and dietary restrictions. We ordered a plate of fried calamari, and a separate plate of fried oysters as well. The calamari was mostly large rings, gently battered and fried. The meat was VERY tender; some of the best calamari I have ever had. It came with a side of spicy aoli sauce that I loved. The oysters (six to a plate) were delicious as well, and came with some kind of spicy-sweet chili sauce that I found myself dipping plenty of my calamari in. For entrees, there is everything ranging from delicious cajun pasta dishes, to simple chicken plates, to various kinds of premium beef and several seafood options. I decided to order the surf and turf, which came with a medallion sized cut of rare filet mignon and a crispy crabcake topped with chimichurri sauce. The dish included a healthy portion of garlic mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli on the side. The steak was supposed to come with some house steak sauce, but I requested if the kitchen would melt some blue cheese on my meat instead. They happily obliged to my request, and the meal came out PERFECT. The meat was a warm red in the center, and could be cut by simply letting my knife lay loosely in my hand. The crabcake was crispy and flavorful; I suspect well over 90% crab meat. For dessert, I ordered the creme brulee cheesecake, a delicious and unique blend of two classic sweet treats to top off a fantastic meal. The cheesecake was rich in flavor without feeling too heavy, and the creme brulee portion that topped the cake gave it a flavor that differentiated it very much from ordinary caramel cheesecakes. Between the southern genteel decor, the pleasant staff, accommodating kitchen, and fantastic food craft, the Lafayette Restaurant made for a beautiful secret date scene that blows away much of the competition in restaurant-saturated nearby Charlottesville. We stopped here after hitting a couple wineries in the area. It's in a little historic house and is charming and quiet. We started with the Mac & Cheese and corn fritters. The Mac and cheese was okay, it had Gouda and bacon and wasn't anything out of this world. The corn fritters were crunchy and filled with creamy corn and were swimming in this delicious honey butter. My girls and I ordered the lamb shank, filet with crab, and diver scallops on onion and mushroom risotto. The lamb shank was cooked perfectly and seasoned so well, you could smell the rosemary all the way from the kitchen. The steak was also cooked perfectly and not over seasoned. I was disappointed with my risotto. The scallops were cooked well and the risotto was also, but it had absolutely no flavor. It was covered in an overpowering balsamic reduction and the bites I got of the risotto without the reduction had no depth of flavor. Otherwise the restaurant was great and the food was good. This is a very nice restaurant tucked away near the Shenandoah National Park. The menu is different every day using only the freshest ingredients. We were there 2 days ago, I had a sea bass dish that was excellent, and this place is in the mountains and not near the ocean. Don't pass on the deserts, they are very special. The staff was very much on top of every detail, the service was top shelf. The building is very old with many antiques. This is a bed and breakfast in the small downtown of Stanardsville. We did not stay here, but we went to the restaurant which apparently was named Virginia's restaurant of the year a couple years ago. After a friendly welcome, we went into the dining room whose decor was pretty minimalistic. We had a prefix 4 course meal called 'Taste the Lafayette' ($50) together with wine paring ($14). The course consisted of bacon-wrapped scallop over seaweed salad, seafood gumbo, shrimp over grits, and steak and crab cake. The host explained each dish and the wine that was paired. Everything was prepared well and the dinner was enjoyable. The scallop was delicious. I had a little trouble with the sauce shrimp was sitting in which was very sweet and ketchupy, and also the sauce over the steak (demiglace?) was a bit too tart. They didn't ask how we wanted to have the steak done and it came out well-done, which wasn't quite the way I wanted. They paired each course with wine from local wineries, which is a nice idea and they were fine, but could have been better. OK, I'm being picky. It is a nice option for an upscale dinner if you are in the area. Perhaps after a day trip in the Shenandoah National Park which is only 10 minutes away. read more

Enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Inn this Saturday. It was our first time there, the place is super historic and the owners/staff are great people. I had a steak burger with blue cheese and a onion ring. The patty was nicely grilled and very flavorful, and paired really well with the tangy blue cheese. Highly recommend trying their burgers. She really enjoyed their chicken pesto panini. The pesto sauce packed lots of rich flavor. The sweet pot fries were a thick cut and perfectly crispy. And the bill was only $24... can't beat that!! read more
