Tiny spider colony in my room
    Elisa L.

I hate the idea of writing a negative review because I wanted to like this place so much, but I want to be honest. I stayed here for 2 nights while I was in town for a wedding at the Lydia Mountain Lodge. I had called Friday afternoon to let them know I might not make it there in time for the short time of check in (4-7 PM). They said they'd tape an envelope with my keys to the back door if I got there after 7. I arrived around 7:30 and looked all over to find the keys in an envelope but gave up. Luckily the staff was still there due to an event. I was able to track someone down, got my keys and was led to my room. Now the room was where I really got disappointed. Let me preface this with saying I love staying at older hotels and B&Bs. I love the historical charm and colonial furniture, but I still expect the place to be clean. The place was pretty dusty and I found a collection of tiny spiders on the window next to my door, on the inside. I didn't feel clean in here. The room I was staying in, Washington Suite, was on the main floor with an outside entrance, facing the street. Due to this, there was a lot of noise. I could hear people leaving the event, the cars on the street, and the people staying above me. The place also feeds stray/outdoor cats, which is very cute but not allergy friendly. Also found one on top of my car when I went to leave. Left dirty paw prints on my windshield. What really was the tipping point for me was when I went into the bathroom before checking out. Right on the door frame was a giant spider-looking creature. I thought it was a wolf spider before researching after getting home that it was a spider cricket. I would have preferred to speak about these issues to a manager but the only staff I interacted with the entire time were those working the restaurant. They never came in to my room to refresh towels or anything either which was disappointing. Speaking of the restaurant, the food was pretty good. If I was rating only the food, I'd give the place a 4/5. The French toast is delicious as are the breakfast potatoes. The grits are pretty bad (very dry) and the Mac and cheese was too runny, and the coffee was some of the worst I think I've ever had. Long story short, eat here but don't stay here. It's not worth the heart ache.

    Grilled romaine wedge

Great Mother's Day dinner at the Lafayette Inn! Nestled in the historic district of Stanardsville, the Lafayette Inn is a great spot to celebrate with a meal. My wife made reservations for the family to celebrate Mother's Day with her mother. We had early reservations at 4:30, so we had the dining room to ourselves. While the menu isn't large, it has something for everyone. Steak, chicken, seafood, and vegetarian options are all available. I started with the Grilled Romaine Wedge. Not so much of an actual wedge, but all of the components. If you sub in the grilled romaine, it was perfect. Great flavor of the blue cheese and bacon paired with a slight smoke and grill marks. For my entrée I ordered the Shrimp and Corn Risotto. I wouldn't consider it spicy, even though it was described as lightly spiced. It was the perfect rich meal for a colder May afternoon. The corn gave the risotto nice texture and the shrimp were cooked well. I capped the night off with a Nightingale Ice Cream sandwich. Based out of Baltimore, it is a struggle to find outside of the area. The Lafayette is one of the only places that carries them locally. The cookie monster is one of my favorites! Alan prepared a great meal. We will return. Maybe we will swing by for one of their gourmet burgers!

Fantastic Mother's Day meal at Lafayette Inn. The food is always on point with attentive service. It was fun to try a bite of each dish as there were 5 of us and we all ordered different entrees. Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo of the grilled romaine wedge or the shrimp and corn risotto. The filet stack is a staple, but the scallops and mushroom risotto was divine. Then, came the sticky toffee cake, pineapple upside down cake, ice cream, and a Nightingale ice cream sandwich (Lafayette is the only place close by that sells them). As much as I enjoy the ice cream sandwiches, the two cakes were absolute treats. We were scraping the plates clean to get every last bite.

    Surf and Turf

What a cute little gem, right outside of Shenandoah State Park! We stopped for lunch after a long challenging hike. I ordered the surf and turf, which was a crab cake and 7 oz steak. I really enjoyed it! The butter could have been a touch melted, but ultimately the taste was right on. The best part of the meal? The homemade ice cream. Now, I don't even like ice cream, but I may dream about this for the rest of my life! If you order nothing else, stop in for this! My husband did not care much for his burger, but he's picky. Said it tasted like Burger King, and he doesn't like flame-broiled. My daughter got the couscous salad and it was amazing! My only negative? The creepy man statue at the top of the stairs. Freaked out my daughter, she actually asked the wait staff if the place was haunted! Lol! Stop in for sure!

Very dissatisfied with the blatant discrimination. Despite arriving first, with a reservation, a white couple was provided menus first and I was waited on second. I ordered my drink first and the man ordered the same drink afterwards. When my drink was ready, it was given to him instead. I had to wait for my drink much much longer than anyone else. The rest of the meal went the same way. The food was good, it the price and service not worth being treated like a second class citizen. Never coming back.

Several of the amenities were not available, the property was run down and dirty. After we arrived at the Glade cabin we walked down the property to see what it had to offer. We noticed our cabin did not have a washer and dryer in it as described and didn'tfind the communal area laundry to use. There was no map provided and no signage to guide what areas were private and for public use. We came upon the wood burning sauna and I gasped when i opened the door. It was run down, super rustic and it honestly reminded me of a crematorium. Next to that was the cool dip pool which was not in working order and not listed as that on the rental description. Several reviews seem like the pool hasnt been in use for a few years. We then walked up to the "castle" on a narrow foot bridge and at the top were what seemed to be two drunk men who claimed they lived there. They were blocking the walkway, and to get around them was awkward. They asked us how we found this place and why we were there. Something didn't sit right with that encounter, so we continued walking instead of going inside to see the communal area. We went back to our cabin and never used the rest of the property after that. It did not seem eco friendly either. The property seems to be in a constant state of construction that other things get overlooked and unkempt. The glade cabin was just ok. It was secluded which was a plus. It seemed clean however there was a strong musty smell throughout. No cleaning supplies offered. The cabin had an ant problem inside and a bee problem outside of the entry doors. Both doors were hard to lock from inside. The main door leading to the kitchen had quite a large gap between it and the frame causing an easy way for insects to get in. The keypad was also not working properly and had a constant noise coming from it which was annoying while trying to sleep. The furniture was old and not comfortable. It did have good wifi and was able to stream on the TV. The lightning was very dim inside, and although it had a lot of lights it was still dark. Im not sure how this property keeps getting good reviews, but i did find quite a few similar to mine. On TripAdvisor there is also mention of this being a nudist camp which was not mentioned in any of the rental descriptions. That, and the non working pool and sauna alone would have made me not book in the first place. Again misleading and unsettling. It is close to the national park which is why we originally chose this place. We spent as much time away from it as possible and only returned to sleep. We did not once see any employees or property managers. I would caution anyone to rethink booking here.
