I ordered with the intention of choosing items that could easily get messed up. Seemingly simple dishes go wrong all the time, and my litmus test, for the quality of other menu items, is to see who pays attention to the details. These folks nailed it! Wonderful portions. The Bologna was cooked to perfection with just the right amount of charing--cut not too thick, not too thin, just right. The onions still had a little bite in them to let me know they were there, so flavorful on an uncomplicated bun. The fries were awesome and cooked for the right amount of time where they held their shape, while still being tender and sweet on the inside. The Mac was on point, perfectly balanced, noodles cooked perfectly, not mushy. And what can I say about that pie. Defined by an amazingly firm crust, cooked through and the filling had the right amount of sweetness to balance the iced topping. Looking forward to trying more items from this menu. I tried calling the location to order ahead but no one answers the phone. Also the prices are confusing online vs in the store. Good luck calling to verify and there's no online ordering so I drove 20 minutes to the location and they are open. I placed an order for fried chicken, Mac and cheese, candied yams and collard greens, and sweet tea. My mom got potato salad and French apple pie. I absolutely love the chicken Omg amazing greens and the yams were perfect. The Mac and cheese needs some salt and pepper, also more cheese preferably. The tea tastes like tea with lemonade which I loved. My mom said the potato salad had too big of chunks of the potatoes but she loved it regardless. Just be prepared to be in the hood and also wait at least 20 minutes because the food is fresh. 9/23/22 update: I went in today for the same meal and for some reason it was a total mistake. The price is listed as $12.75 but I was told the final price for 6 wings and two sides would be $16. I received my food and the wings had no breading on them at all. The Mac and cheese was not good either or the yams. I went back inside for a refund and was given it without any issues. I'm just so disappointed that it was such a miss this time. I will not be returning especially for this price of portions are not consistent with posted pricing. read more

When walking in, it took me 10 minutes before he realized I hadn't ordered. Customer service was not great. The glass between us was very hard to communicate. He told me the food would be ready in 12 minutes and it took 22 while I was the only one waiting. No pricing written anywhere. Did not give me bbq sauce. You're better off going to a sit down bbq with better service since the prices are just as high. read more

We found this place bc the hubby was really craving a pulled pork sandwich @9:30pm. This was the only spot open (they close at 11, AHMAZING!!)and we rememebered we wanted to try during the Black Restaurant Experience. We've lived in this area so the location wasn't ever a thought of an issue but as in other reviews it may be a bit offputting to some. Just park and go in; the staff is very kind. The menu was more extensive than I thought; they have a nice variety to choose from. We ordered 2 dinner platters: 1. Pulled pork/ Chicken sandwhiches, macaroni &cheese, string beans 3. Lemon Chess pie & Coconut pie - both sandwhiches were good, nothing to make you slap your mama but, good. They need a better way to package bc my sandwich got wet by the stringbeans, while in the foil. -String beans were the best part of the platter; seasoned so well! -Macaroni & cheese was sweet and I was not expecting that. Sweet mac is a country thing but I prefer salt & pepper. They tasted wayyy better mixed with the string beans. -Now those pies are a whole nother story! They were rich, but not overbearingly so. I would drive all the way across town for the pie alone! *We may have caught an off night; we'll for sure give them another shot. NOTE: posting on August 7, 2020 This place was/is amazing! We weren't sure they were open at the moment because it's a pretty small spot, but within a few minutes we realized we just happened to get there at a good time! They were requiring masks and limiting the number of folks inside, for those who are also concerned. The order went smoothly and we got our food hot and in no time. A hole in the wall take-out spot with decent parking, and it's open pretty late. We got two pulled chicken sandwiches and fries. My brother got the six wingettes, fries and macaroni (he didn't love the macaroni, but people are all picky about mac!). I also got a lemonade -- the jumbo size is the only way to go, trust me. The food was great! I seriously have no complaints: the bun was nice, I got a decent portion, and everything was perfect in the order. The fries are hand cut, so we did put them in the air fryer when we got home... but who cares! They'd have been fine anyway. I got a side of bbq, Im pretty sure they have a tomato/ketchup based sauce as is common so it does kinda just taste like ketchup. All in all, Im excited to go back! They're still open pretty late, but I did see a sign about them being slightly different, so take some caution. I noticed some folks came in without placing an order, so maybe you can phone in? First off the food was amazing and the customer service was wonderful. The owner was at the window helping us through the order, very personable. Highlights was the potato salad which had onions, cabbage cooked in smoked turkey and pulled chicken that was marinated to perfection. Everything had good flavor. Added bonus was the lemonade, sweet tea and lemon chess pie. Will go there again and happy the location is opened late. Finally gave this place a try after many passings. I'm very picky when it comes to food and let's say it definitely is to my standards!!! I have eaten at this place for 50 years lol. I have never been disappointed. Yesterday changed my heart. The lemon chess pie is NOT the same pie as before. It was AWEFUL st best. I went to this establishment during Black Restaurant Week and if was my first time: Excellent Food: we ordered chicken, ribs and chitterlings, cabbage, collards, potato salad. We were not disappointed. Ribs and Chicken were tender with an excellent sauce. Chitterlings are a hard dish to cook. It takes a cook who knows what they are doing and these chitterlings are clean and well seasoned and deliciously. We are definitely customers for life and highly recommend them. I went to Inner City Blues that was once Carolina Barbecue and got the Wingettes and fries with a homemade sauce called OMG. It was AMAZING!! I also tried the SWAI fish sandwich that filled not one but two slices of texas toast. Their prices were very reasonable and I love the fact that they run weekly specials. They are definitely a hidden wonder but not for long with their great food. read more

I tried Inner City Blues as a part of Richmond Black Restuarant Week and I'm so glad I did. I tried the North Carlina Pulled Pork sandwich and it was amazing. I'm a fan of vinegar based BBQ and have had a hard time finding it here. Service was great and so were the prices. I look forward to going back. read more

This use to be call Carolina BBQ but it was taken over but two great husband and wife owners who really know what they are doing. I would recommend a dish but all of its great and out of my 6 trips to this place have never been disappointed. I highly suggest that if you're ever in the area that you definitely check this place out because this is the next best thing to mam j's that you can get. The food is horrible! the only edible thing I would choose at this restaurant is the cakes that is it. The fries are okay, but plain like cardboard, the fried chicken was soggy, the pulled chicken sandwich smelled real funny like I could pinpoint the smell, the pig feet was nasty, the NC minced pork bbq did not taste like NC bbq. They should be ashamed for putting this stuff on their menu and selling it. Please and I beg you to not ever eat here. I threw all of my boyfriend and I food in the trash ASAP! Man let me start with the service. AWESOME. First time so we were given samples to see how the food was. Let say I spent 40 while I was there. I ordered the ribs, fall off the bone, smoked chicken wings, fall off the bone, pork barbecue seasoned well, chicken barbecue flavorful and the fried fish fried to perfection. The sides were delicious (collards and potatoe salad). They have pictures of the food and all the food we received looked like the pictures. Unfortunately my chitterling dinner wasnt as good as my previous dinner. I ordered Chitterlings with Yams and cabbage. The size of the plate was plentiful. However the chitterlings wasnt cleaned properly my yams was more liked a spiced mashed sweet potato the cabbage wasnt seasoned at all. I went on a hunt for BBQ but "The Alamo" was not open due to the plandemic. Google said they were open and fairly close. 4 miles away and about 30 minute drive... nah Im lying it was about a 15 minutes. So this lady comes out and asks why im walking around the building. I told her i was looking for a BBQ cause I seen smoke, i know its close....So after talking she opened the front door, Immediately I start asking questions... Im from the outer banks of NC, we have a different culinary style of BBQ . I mean it is what it is...After shootin the shit for a few minutes this lady opens up and realises we from he same cloth.. she southern, im southern, We obviously take pridePRIDE in our backgrounds. She starts handing me samples of what I grew up on, tasting the exact same thing I grew up eating. THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST CAROLINA BBQ AND ATMOSPHERE... Race only matters if you can see it, but i felt like I was at the old country kitchen that corporation put out of business. I didnt feel privileged, I felt welcomed and at home....I felt a small piece of my childhood, a piece of humanity restored, I now live in south side and continue to give back every chance I want to eat the best damn Carolina BBQ in all of RVA... Ended up here because choice #1 vanished. Had to wait for the food to be cooked fresh. It was worth it! The fish sandwich was about 3 of them with two slices of bread, hot and fresh. The BBQ sandwich was a true Carolina style chopped and spicy. Huge portion of a sandwich, I went back for a second. Fast service on the BBQ, no wait at all.
