    Cheesecake

I went for a work lunch and it was a nice place. The cheesecake was a little dense, but my coworker really enjoyed their burger. Overall, I would definitely return for another work lunch.

My partner and I have been here three times now. The service is always good, if not excellent. When the servers and bar staff and hostesses are all working together, it's a beautiful thing. The ambiance is something akin to retro modern with classic retro signage painted on the exposed brick walls, oozing with nostalgia, harkening back to days past. Every time I come here, it feels like a family gathering, even though I don't know many of the people here. The restaurant always feels cozy and quaint. The menu is focused, a curated collection of American food items that the chefs lovingly prepare. They certainly know their food science! The appetizer (pimento cheese with crustinis) came out promptly. The textures and flavors all complimented each other. The entrees were equally delicious. I had the turkey breast with gravy and my partner had the fried chicken. The portions focused on the three Ms: massive, mouthwatering, and magnificent.

Service was great. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the food. I ordered the crispy fried fish with Mac and cheese, and collards. I enjoyed all. For dessert, I had the best slice of chocolate cake ever!!! I was over the moon. I went here on a Wednesday afternoon for lunch and it was decently busy. The place has a nice hue on the inside and it feels really cozy. I'll be going back!

We would always see this place when driving through church hill and thanks to another favorite having an hour+ wait time we decided to try our luck here. We were immediately sat on a Sunday morning luckily enough and we had one of the best breakfasts in Richmond! The fried green tomato benedict was awesome, and my husband loved his sandwich. We will definitely be back!

We really enjoyed stumbling into this place! We are moving to Virginia soon and will be back. Our waitress Morgan was very friendly. The spaghetti was SO good. It had such a fresh taste, we both couldn't stop eating it and it's a great portion. The special was good, but the chicken was a tad dry but the butter helped with that. The mashed potatoes were delicious! The place is very small and quaint, and clearly has a great atmosphere because there were a ton of people. Given that sound does travel loud and easily. We definitely had to speak up when talking to each other. Overall great place and we can't wait to come back.

They cooked like they cared!! We were blown away from start to finish. Our waitress Bria was welcoming and did her job well. She's wasn't over the top but she took care of business with a personality and we appreciated that. First up, the shrimp and the fried green tomatoes. Chefs kiss. Once we had a taste we immediately looked at each other in awe. I did ask for some of their aioli for the shrimp because I felt like I need that with it and it didn't disappoint. My parter thoroughly enjoyed her burger and fries. I ordered the Eggplant spaghetti. I don't know what type of witchcraft was going on with that dish but it was innovative and tasty. It's easy for fried eggplant to get soggy but not these ones. It's stuffed with artichoke, spinach and ricotta. Flavor on 1000. I did have to add salt to the spaghetti but that was my personal choice. The salt level may be fine for others. Lastly, the vibes! We went at night and it was like a scene out of a movie. Diversity, conversation and not a soul on their phone. There was no music playing. Just the music of people talking and being in the moment! I will be back. I will be back. I will be back!! Well done!

I love this cozy local haunt. You can find The Hill Café in Church Hill. There is free parallel street parking out front and nearby. You can also take the bus or bike here. My bestie and I came for RVA Brunch Weekend. They open at 10:30am on Sundays. We got there a little early so stopped by Riverbend Roastery to grab a drink nearby. We were seated quickly at a very cute two person booth. There is plenty of seating here, both inside and outside. We loved our server. She was super sweet and made us feel welcome. I love when you don't feel rushed at a place, but also very taken care of. I ordered 2 Eggs your way and my friend got the Fried Green Tomato BLT sandwich. I'm rarely a home fries person, but I really liked their home fries here. I also really enjoyed my biscuit. My friend adored her sandwich and the potato salad. I highly recommend brunch at The Hill Café.

I've always passed by this place and mentioned how adorable it is! Finally got to stop in last night and got the fried green tomato's (so delicious and reminded me of my grandma) then I got the Alfredo with shrimp and LET ME TELL YOU. I'm Italian American and I usually never order Alfredo because it just never is as good as my mom's.BUT THIS???? Was sooo amazing. I had to call my mom up to tell her how delicious it was. Not to mention the waitress was such a sweet heart and made everything so easy! 100/10 you got a customer for life !!

This was a nice bar/restaurant. It felt like the community watering hole. Not a big place but had that welcoming feel. The food was decent. I had the boneless fried chicken breast w mashed potatoes and spoon bread. Never had spoon bread before and it was pretty decent. I would get it again. The chicken was decent was missing something but not bad. The mashed potatoes w Turkey gravy was ok. Like the chicken was missing something just can't tell. Was w my son, he had country fried steak. He said it was good but a little salty, maybe they put my seasonings in his. We ordered as an app poutine. My first time having it be truly didn't know what it was and I ate it and it was ok. Everything was ok but I rated it a 4 bc the atmosphere was great. I recommend anyone in the area to check this place out. You may meet a new friend.

Ordered takeout from here - loved the flavor, portion sizes, and cost of everything! I would skip the spoon bread since it wasn't my cup of tea, but would definitely come back here another time!

Jan. 27, 2023 4:45pm The Hill Met up with a friend for 'linner' lol. I ordered the crab cake sandwich w/sweet potato fries. Very good and it didn't feel like a heavy meal. The cheesecake was...cheesecake. Good. The service was good and fast. This restaurant is good dining alone, with friends or a date.

What do people get for their kids?

Hi! We have a Kids Menu: Grilled Cheese, Quesadilla, Chicken Tenders, Kids Pasta. All 7.95! We hope to see you soon.

Could I take a party of 6 here and have room or would it be tight?

They have 1 or 2 tables that can seat 6. I would definitely suggest making a reservation.

It's a very popular restaurant, so today, when we entered, while we were greeted right away, there was a 30 minute wait. The time actually went by relatively fast, and by the time we were seated, large cups of ice water were already there at our table, as well as a carafe to refill them. There's no physical menus, instead you scan a QR code which brings you to their menu. They have lots of drink options, including several specialty cocktails, beers, and ciders. Our waiter was super sweet and attentive, and the food came out relatively quickly. For my drink, I ordered a local cider from a Virginia ciderie, as well as the It's A Wrap, which has cheddar, ranch, mixed greens, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and your choice of protein (I got tofu). I also got a side of the Mac and cheese, which I could tell was made in house. Super creamy and flavorful with a hint of spice. My wrap was also insanely good! I'm impressed by the amount of vegetarian options here. Any burger can be made both gluten free or vegan, and the choices of protein make it more accessible for everyone who comes in. I'm really happy we were recommended this place!

The bar was getting full, but there were still a few tables left to choose from. This is a dive, similar to Poe's Pub, so if that's not your scene, don't come here. That said, we really like the character of this place, even if it smells a little funky upstairs. It adds to the character and charm, or at least, that's what we tell ourselves. The same bartender as usual (still don't know his name) helped us. They do have a sour beer. It's not as fruity as I like, though, still passable. (Seriously, Patrick Henry's, y'all need to order some from Texas and Oklahoma sours for the real deal; Martin House Brewing Co. in Ft Worth does them so right). Anyway, we ordered the goat cheese bread appetizer (warm apple butter, goat cheese, and sunflower seeds = immense pleasure). For entrees, I grabbed the Hot Chicken Pizza (hot sauce and pickles!), and my partner went for the chicken sandwich and sweet potato fries. There was so much food that we had leftovers, as usual. They heated up well in the air fryer and were nearly as good. DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS PLACE. I will admit, it does look slightly seedy, but the food here is magnificent. The pizza was thin, crispy, and full of delicious flavor. I swear, the chefs here know what they are doing with their menu. It's simple, yet elegant. The appetizers are simple, yet they easily compete with The Brooklyn and Pinky's apps, for example, which are more affordable and in a more relaxed environment. Do yourself a favor and get the goat cheese. It sings. The customers here are chill and interesting, and the bartender is calm and cool; he never seems out of sorts, even when the bar is full with a line out the door. I wholeheartedly recommend Patrick Henry's. We have been here twice now, and the service and food have been excellent both times (Sept 2025, May 2026).

He asked for the password and we, unprepared, had to tell him a joke or an interesting fact. Luckily, my partner had one on hand. The atmosphere was lovely, very reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy, or at least what you'd imagine it to be like. Our server came by within a few minutes of us being seated. She lacked enthusiasm, unlike the host, unfortunately. Her service turned out to be lackluster as well. We ordered the chicken pot pie and the filet mignon with asparagus. For drinks, the Grape Gatsby and Maine root beer. The food, like our server, lacked appeal. The saving grace was the host and the atmosphere. The view was lovely and the intimacy of the setting was a welcome experience. For dessert we ordered the bread pudding, and it was tasty, though nothing special. The burned odor that we smelled prior to its arrival turned out to be the bread. Noise level can be challenging so we try to go in the early side when possible. Went for our anniversary in during Richmond restaurant week in October (they gave us a complimentary glass of bubbly to celebrate) and again with the kids in December. They always have amazing cocktails. Their mixologist is on their game with so many choices! For our anniversary, we got Cloud Boat and Apartment in the City, and we loved them both. Both were completely as described, light and ez in the palate which is a skill for whiskey. For apps we got the PEI mussels and the smoked fish dip. Again both were delicious. I particularly love my fish dip - the groom focaccia was done beautifully in the dill was a nice compliment to the flavor. For entrées, we had the catfish sandwich and the Arctic char. The catfish sandwich was good, but nowhere near the quality of the Arctic char, which was savory and delicious and elevated by the brown butter and golden raisins. Since it was restaurant week the dessert was included in the price so we got the apple cranberry fry pie And the chocolate ganache bar. Both were a nice way to end the meal. The service was a little too leisurely for my temperament, and the tab did arrive at the table on one piece of paper when we had clearly requested that there be a separate tab for each couple, but those would be my only complaints. We all had cocktails, one from their specialty list and three that were standard issue. All were delicious and had an appropriate alcohol content for cocktails. The restaurant week menu provided a good variety of choices. Everything we had was really delicious. Portions were generous, so I could not eat more than about half of each course and not get overly full, but I assume they are sized for all but the hungriest diner. The venue's sound level was pretty high. I could have left my hearing aids at home so I wouldn't hear as much of the background noise. Noisy restaurants are pretty standard, I guess. We will definitely be returning to Alewife. It will probably take the place of Grisette in the rotation, which has been dropped because of institution of a fee for reservations canceled less than 24 hours in advance. (I don't think it should be treated as a privilege to dine somewhere when you have so many equivalent choices, but I guess they want to decrease the number of people who try to make them their dining choice. Objective accomplished.) The Hemingway quote at the bottom of the tab was a little weird. Not a Hemingway fan, but I guess it was an interesting thing to do. If you have read other reviews of mine, you may be aware that basically non-alcoholic cocktails that should have alcohol in them are reason enough for me to never return to a restaurant.
