The menu is focused, a curated collection of American food items that the chefs lovingly prepare. They certainly know their food science! What a neighborhood gem! Visited on a Monday night and it was packed. There is a small bar area several two tops and a couple of four tops. They do a crazy amount of food delivery and carry out as our table looked at the kitchen line and they were constantly packing up to go bags. We shared the fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese and calamari appetizer and both were amazing. For my dinner, I had the eggplant which comes with an entire bowl of pasta. My friend had the blue plate special with the meatloaf, mashed potatoes in green beans and raved about the gravy and the freshness of the beans. If I lived in this area. I would be a regular here, but I am visiting from out of town. Parking is available on the nearby streets and didn't take us much time to find a good spot. We would always see this place when driving through church hill and thanks to another favorite having an hour+ wait time we decided to try our luck here. We were immediately sat on a Sunday morning luckily enough and we had one of the best breakfasts in Richmond! The fried green tomato benedict was awesome, and my husband loved his sandwich. We really enjoyed stumbling into this place! We are moving to Virginia soon and will be back. Our waitress Morgan was very friendly. The spaghetti was SO good. It had such a fresh taste, we both couldn't stop eating it and it's a great portion. The special was good, but the chicken was a tad dry but the butter helped with that. The mashed potatoes were delicious! The place is very small and quaint, and clearly has a great atmosphere because there were a ton of people. Given that sound does travel loud and easily. They cooked like they cared!! We were blown away from start to finish. Our waitress Bria was welcoming and did her job well. She's wasn't over the top but she took care of business with a personality and we appreciated that. First up, the shrimp and the fried green tomatoes. Chefs kiss. Once we had a taste we immediately looked at each other in awe. I did ask for some of their aioli for the shrimp because I felt like I need that with it and it didn't disappoint. My parter thoroughly enjoyed her burger and fries. I ordered the Eggplant spaghetti. I don't know what type of witchcraft was going on with that dish but it was innovative and tasty. It's easy for fried eggplant to get soggy but not these ones. It's stuffed with artichoke, spinach and ricotta. Flavor on 1000. I did have to add salt to the spaghetti but that was my personal choice. The salt level may be fine for others. Lastly, the vibes! We went at night and it was like a scene out of a movie. I love this cozy local haunt. You can find The Hill Café in Church Hill. There is free parallel street parking out front and nearby. You can also take the bus or bike here. My bestie and I came for RVA Brunch Weekend. They open at 10:30am on Sundays. We got there a little early so stopped by Riverbend Roastery to grab a drink nearby. We were seated quickly at a very cute two person booth. There is plenty of seating here, both inside and outside. We loved our server. She was super sweet and made us feel welcome. I love when you don't feel rushed at a place, but also very taken care of. I ordered 2 Eggs your way and my friend got the Fried Green Tomato BLT sandwich. I'm rarely a home fries person, but I really liked their home fries here. I also really enjoyed my biscuit. My friend adored her sandwich and the potato salad. I've always passed by this place and mentioned how adorable it is! Finally got to stop in last night and got the fried green tomato's (so delicious and reminded me of my grandma) then I got the Alfredo with shrimp and LET ME TELL YOU. Cute little place - stopped in after some errands when visiting my sister the other day I don't remember what she had, but I ordered the Shrimp and Grits and DANG that was good! I order it whenever I see it on the menu and I allllmost want to say it's the best Shrimp & Grits that I've ever had! The wait staff was friendly and helpful. But I would recommend going on a weekday because the weekend batch has may too many potatoes (almost half of it was chunks of potatoes which takes away from the taste and quality - less bang for your buck) and the taste isn't the same. A friend had recommended The Hill *before* I moved to Richmond in an intro list of where to eat in the city. I had had it on my bookmarks list since then (about four years ago), so I was thrilled to finally check them out last week. I visited with my mom, and we arrived early enough to snag a table indoors without a wait. By the time we left, both inside and outside were hopping (for good reason), but still properly distanced. I was feeling meat fatigue and their crispy fried fish called to me, so I ordered that along with a caesar salad. My mom ordered the crab cake sandwich. My mom said her crab was cold, and they quickly took it away (letting her keep her fries) and brought her a fresh one. My cod dish was perfect. It came with a thick lemony sauce that was just phenomenal. Our server mentioned that most people can just eat one piece and box up the other. That's exactly what happened with me! The salad was great, too. My mom also loved her second crab cake. Church Hill is a neighborhood I love but don't visit often enough. What's great about The Hill is that you can walk one block over to Anthony's for some top-tier soft serve after your meal...or walk over to Libby Hill Park to see the sunset (or both!). I had a business meeting here and honestly I forgot the picture! I had a blackened chicken wrap with sweet potato fries. The fries were fresh and crispy and the wrap was delicious, packed with a wonderful tangy sauce . The waitress was friendly and actually, what I'd ordered she'd recommended. Solid recommendation! Arrived on a Sunday right before 3pm. The kitchen closes to switch from brunch to dinner starting at 4. We did not know this, but were very appreciative they let us just sit outside and drink until the kitchen opened for dinner because we weren't looking for brunch. Our food came out quick once we ordered and everything was delicious. My only note would be to amp up the Mac n cheese it was only so so. We both got the fried fish and the breading was perfect. Very friendly service, very salty food. Tried the smash burger...yeesh, it was overcooked and extremely over salted. Don't have something on your menu if your cooks can't cook it properly. The burgers were crispy on the outside and slightly pink on the inside which is what a smash burger is supposed to be. Also, the lettuce on the burger was so finely shredded it was warm and limp by the time it reached the table. I've experienced this with an Italian cold cut sandwich. The lettuce was completely soggy, pretty gross. My husband's regular burger was also cooked to death. Our fries were over salted as well. You could see the coating of salt stuck to the fries. I understand the roll salt plays in cooking. It's there to enhance flavors. In this case, like a previous meal at the Hill where the salmon was completely inedible, all you could taste was salt. I understand the people working in the kitchen are cooks, not chefs, but members of the restaurant group that owns The Hill ought to eat there from time to time so they can experience the dry, overcooked, over salted dishes that are coming out of their kitchen. read more

10/19/2022 Great neighborhood restaurant serving up great food. Our service was wonderful even though the place was hopping on a Wednesday evening. Started with oysters and spinach/ artichoke dip. Oysters were small but fried perfectly. The dip did not look appetizing but tasted really good. We were expecting more of a chunky dip whereas this one had a very smooth texture. The quality of our entrees was excellent..filets done perfectly, crab cakes were moist and meaty. Everything served had a cafe feel to it.. hearty portions and comforting sides, but served up with a fine dining flair. Finished with a lovely lemon cake for dessert; however the Bourbon pecan pie needs work.. our portion was all filling and not enough pecans . All in all this place has a great, cozy-cafe vibe which will keep customers like us coming back for more. I can't wait to try the brunch menu! read more
