If you're picking up property, bring a pen, in case they still haven't replaced the one they expect you to use that doesn't work. Also, be sure to have the booking number for your person. When I was first introduced to the "systemic" processes involved in incarceration, Intake Transfer and Release (ITR) wasn't even a thing. I'm sure in some ways, it has streamlined aspects of booking and release. For example, if someone is processed, they'll likely be released through ITR. It's also evidently where you go to collect an inmate's property--if the "tank order" has been properly submitted. Although not the same place to pick up property for someone who is no longer in custody. That's a big if, especially given the ongoing staffing shortages. Delays are common, and miscommunication is rampant. Yes, public parking is located in the pickup lot, even for property retrieval. Security staff were kind and helpful, but the Detention Officers (DOs) assisting with property seemed understandably frustrated with the process. When I visited, they told me they hadn't received the tank order that had supposedly been submitted the previous week. I asked for clarification and got little more than a shrug. The MCSO website states the public must bring the tank order to property pickup--but according to staff, that's outdated information. Something felt off, so I went to the jail myself to retrieve the tank order. When I returned to ITR with it, a more informed DO finally explained what had happened. Here's the thing--not every inmate is a repeat offender who understands this complex, often contradictory system. My loved one is a first-time detainee with no knowledge of these procedures. In this case, confusion was made worse by the fact that he was immediately placed under a 72-hour watch and never informed that he could release cash in his possession to an outside party. There's a 24-hour window to do this--but if you're under watch and no one tells you, how would you know? According to a supervising DO, many staff members are new and still learning the process themselves. Unfortunately, this leads to inconsistent information being given to the public--often confidently, but incorrectly. In my experience, some DOs would rather pass on misinformation than admit they're unsure or ask someone more knowledgeable. This creates a troubling cycle: inaccurate information is passed down and repeated until someone takes the time to correct it--if ever. Bottom line: ITR is one of those places no one wants to be, but you might find yourself needing to go there anyway. If you do, be patient, double-check everything, and trust your gut when something feels off. You may have to advocate harder than seems reasonable--but you're not alone in that. read more

This review is for information purposes only. In efforts to help people with information with maybe some help I was looking for before I went in. I was sentenced to a three day self surrender. I went in on a Friday at 6pm. Do not take anything with you. They claim you can have cash and a book well for this you can't. They will take it with them as personal items at booking. From about 6pm-8pm is the booking process. They have you fill out forms and wait to check everyone in. The room is small and I do suggest wearing layers. Wear slip on shoes with no laces, pants with no drawstring as well as any hoodie or jacket with no draw strings. I wasn't able to remove my nose ring so they let me keep it in but I removed my other piercings. After you get a pat down and scanned you get "food" which is a packet of peanut butter, a ketchup size jelly, bread and two cookies. I was there Friday night, all day Saturday and started my release about 130am Sunday. I did not eat. You will walk from booking to mugshots and medical. This room is busy with all the new arrests. There were five women and they put us in one bathroom to pee in a cup so if you're the shy type say you don't need to pee at the moment and you can wait until everyone is done and hopefully have some luck to pee alone. After mugshots you move to the room adjacent for fingerprints. It was about 1145pm before anything else. Since I was there three days, four of the girls I was with went to the release section and I went to another room where they talk to new inmates and dress them in orange suits. I didn't have to dress because I was already sentenced. The chairs were unbearable and they sat me in there for twelve hours. I asked for a cell at least three times. The first guard seemed to care a little more and at least was nice but after a shift rotation the second guard was visibly rude to people. I kept getting asked to change by other guards who didn't know why I was there until I said something and then he would chime in. He knew I was waiting for a room but didn't seem to care until someone asked me. At least there was a tv to watch. I witnessed eight people going through withdrawal, throwing up, detoxing. Two fights almost broke out. By noon they switched me to a cell. Gave me a mat and blanket. I tried to sleep the rest of my time which wasn't comfortable but better than trying to in the room before that. You won't get to shower, brush your teeth and their are no clocks or mirrors. By 130am Sunday they called me for release. I was to my car by 215am and out Moral of the story, don't go to jail read more

It is jail and not supposed to be club med. I get that. I was there for 2 days on self surrender. I will say for the most part the detention officers were very polite, unless you give them a reason not to be. They were also very accommodating to my status as transgender. I was allowed to stay with the female side and they were awesome about using my correct pronouns. Although there were a few fights on the men's side, I never felt in danger for my safety. The things that could be improved would include a little variety in the food. They serve chow twice a day, and all 4 of my meals were a dry roll, small packet of peanut butter, and a packet of jelly with a cookie. It wasn't horrible, but it was the same for every meal. Also it is freezing cold in there. Unless you are there longer than a weekend you don't get a blanket or mat to sleep on. The best comparison is spending 2 days at the dmv and trying to sleep in those chairs. Again it is not supposed to be a vacation. Check your ego at the door and just be polite and respectful and you will be fine. Some things to know: Wear shoes without laces because they will be taken from you Don't take cash if you are there for less than 2 days. They will put it on a debit card, charge a fee, and you can't use it for anything in there. Wear several layers of clothes. It gets cold in there They won't let you keep any jewelry or electronics, even piercings must be removed. Vitamin c is crucial. It seemed everyone in there was coughing or sick read more

Very dangerous to have that jail out in the boondocks like that. Anybody can get released at 1:00 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning and something can happen to them. It's dark over there and there's no bus route. I think this jail was put there on purpose. read more

I completely understand it's a jail they didn't intend for the experience to be pleasant. But the unsanitary conditions here are repulsive. Most of the rooms smell like vomit and fecal matter it was nauseating. Especially when you're going through the pat down. I didn't see them clean anything the entire 15 hours I was there. read more

This place is horrible. The officers are rude and they treat the detainees like they were in a Jewish concentration camp. My daughter had her IA at 2:00 am, after being brought in at 10:00 am, the day before. She's been there for over 27 hours and has not been given any food. When she asks questions the officers are rude and do not provide any information. These people are supposed to be public servants, but they usurp their authority to be rude. Government employees who are paid by our taxes should take courses on being professional and diplomatic. not everyone who is arrested is a criminal. Police make mistakes and arrest the wrong person all the time. They should not treat everyone with the same disdain and rudeness. Someone who is there for the first time ever is already scared and anxious. They should not add their stress level. read more

This jail is great. I have a heavy heart even calling it a jail, for the sole reason of it feeling so similar to home. I wanted for nothing during my stay and I was treated with the utmost class and respect. The guards were so helpful that they even kept $20 from my wallet because they knew I was going to leave them a nice tip for their kindness. The other inmates (more like family) were splendid. I was very concerned about my 1 day stay at the Maricopa Transfer and Release location on 28th Dr. and knowing what to expect. Here is my personal experience. INTAKE: ~ 7:00 pm - 7: 30 pm: You need to present outside the Self-Surrender door at the date and  time on the order.  There are directions on the property on how to get there, but not always very clear. They will not admit you early, but I assume you have until 8 PM to be admitted.  I would recommend not being late. An officer comes to the door and checks your ID and jail form.  I wore comfortable clothes.  It's a bit cold in the rooms. Do not wear any jewelry - it needs to be removed and placed in a plastic bag. Cell phones need to be off.   I recommend not taking any money.  Shoelaces need to be removed as well so slip on shoes would be better.  I had a hard time walking in my tennies! You then complete a demographic and medical form and give it to the officer.   The officer takes the forms, and you WAIT. PAT DOWN: ~ 7:30pm: ~ 7:45pm - I was then moved to the pat down room. We were asked to remove shoes and socks.   I went through a scanner and then was patted down.  They offer you a sack of strange food (bun, brown pudding in a squishy bag, 2 cookies, small package of dried fruit).  I took one but gave it to someone else. MEDICAL/MUGSHOT: ~ 7:45 - 8:30pm:  I was then moved to the medical room.  There you are called to have your vitals taken (BP, Temp, ht, wt).  WAIT to be called to a booth to review your medical information.  WAIT again to have your mugshot taken.  Then WAIT to be called to the fingerprinting room. FINGERPRINTING: ~ 8:30pm - 9:15 pm: Your fingerprints are taken with ink (very messy) and then again electronically.  After fingerprinting, you WAIT to be called to the release room. RELEASE ROOM: ~ 9:15pm - 2:00am It could be as late as 10AM the next day since there is no guarantee when you will be released (depends on how busy they are).   There are phones and rest rooms. You need to ask to use the uni-sex restrooms that are locked even while you are in it.  They can be nasty.  The phones are available and free, but I did not use one. In here I waited until about 12:45am to be processed for release since my stay was 1 day (release after midnight). For release, an officer calls you up and you need to state your name, DOB, why you were arrested, where was the arrest, home address and last 4 SSN. You sign the forms, and your thumb is fingerprinted on the documents.  You WAIT for the sergeant to review all the forms, call you for release, and give you your possessions. Then you are FREE!  You are let out a door some distance from the parking lot and asked to go to the outside waiting area. PARKING AREA:  Many people waited in the public parking area for released detainees.  There were also a few taxis.  My ride waited in the car for me. I would be cautious if I did not have a ride scheduled.  I heard the bus route was about a 1 mile walk away. Some general comments: Bring your ID and jail form. Wear comfortable clothes with slip on shoes. No jewelry. Each room is co-ed with men on one set of chairs and women on another set. All rooms are very hectic and noisy.  Chairs are hard plastic and uncomfortable for long waits.  There are TVs but they are difficult to watch with closed captions and some in Spanish. Plan for lots of waiting with nothing to do. It was very boring. Times are approximate. Overall, the people are the disadvantaged and very unkempt with many still on drugs.   I never felt threatened, but it was not a comfortable environment.  Most of the officers were polite. read more

This review is for anyone going in on a 1-3 day self surrender, and wondering what to expect. First of wear something comfortable sweat pants, long sleeve shirt and jacket. Also slip on shoes or sandals, no laces. I chose to wear jacket and sweat pants with no strings, but I did see other people had strings, but I did not want to risk having it taken away. I was there for a lovely 3 day stay. Reported at 8 pm on a Tuesday. The first room was there less then 30 minutes, you fill out basic information and then they take any belongings . Then they have you take shoes , socks and jacket off and walk through a body scanner and then they pat you down, and then give you a roll, nasty looking peanut butter, animal crackers and a gatorade. Then your on your way to Second room very busy room they will have you pee in a cup to check if your pregnant and then they take your mug shot. Females on one side and males on another side. Packed in like sardines, its dirty and you have people laying on the ground, there is some TVs only 1 working . Spend 7 hours in a chair. Next room inked and electronic fingerprints. Spend about 3 hours in this room. Next room was the coldest of all the processing room. The processing room is wear they dress you down, you see medical, and they decide where to house you. Truthful don't know why someone on a 72 hour hold needed to be in that room since you do not have to do any of that. Was in this room for over 10 hours, horrible and now very sleep deprived. I feel bad for the ones dressed down because its so cold and they wont even give you a blanket and expect you to be up for 24 hours before they house you. Finally around 4 pm after being there 24 hours a officer takes 2 of us to the release tank, this room smells repulsive, ask for a mask. Its packed loud and most uncomfortable room. I ask the officer if we get to leave early and she states it wont be tell after midnight. What the f! 10 + more hours . I talk to a guard and tell him me and another girl have been here over 24 hours that we needed a mat and cell. The officer was nice enough to take us to a holding cell. So you get a mat and thin blanket. The cell is freezing cold, light is shinning in your eyes. Inmates screaming and pounding on door. The only nice thing in here is stretching out your legs otherwise it is miserable and freezing cold. Finally at 2 am Thursday morning guard comes and takes us back to the discharge area and we are released by 3 am. So if your there for only a day, not so bad, longer then that and it sucks ! So dress comfortable and take some 12 hour Advil and tylenol and eat before you go. Good luck ! read more

The way they gently had me handcuffed, and spoke to me was not bad at all. It's basically a process, but you start off in the processing room for self surrenders, they did do a urinalysis but i believe it was only to check if i was prego, which by the way i was negative for. Next stop was the room where they Pat you down to make sure you didn't bring any contraband or weapons, i was a little ickied out because they make you walk through the room and metal detectors practically naked from the ankles down. Next stop was the mugshot room, mine surprisingly looked very decent for being in jail. Then the next room was the fingerprinting room, keep in mind you're mixed with men and women by then. There was this man hitting on me, which i clearly denied him and continued my journey. Last stop after all this was just waiting for each of our names to get called in a group order and each one of us left after each group got called. Reasons why I recommend this place because the COs are very respectful, they will crack jokes with you along with your inmates. Also the midnight snacks they feed you, is very nice of them to do, not the best snacks but it helps you get by since you're up all night. Reasons why i don't recommend it here is that it's rather cold, and takes a long time to process. I had checked in at 8pm and wasn't out until the next morning more than 13 hours later, also there is no beds for you to sleep in so it's basically like the dmv which i know we all hate. read more

This is the easiest place on earth to do a day or two on a DUI. The dude crying about not getting g to sleep away his 48 hours in a nice comfy single cell cracks me up. Guess he thought since ONLY had a DUI they'd have nice king size bed with a bath robe and slippers ready for him. Hate to tell anyone but jail is not for your comfort. Unfortunately this wasn't my first go round. Last time I spent 40 hours in 4th Ave horseshoe. That is a true hell hole. This place is just plain boring and that's about the worst part you will experience if you are a person that can just chill out and endure hours of boredom and not stuffing your face with food every two hours like you do on the outside it's totally fine. This place sucks, they don't even give you a bed if your going to be there less than 72 hours on a self surrender. The sheet the court gives you says you can bring cash, but I wouldn't if your doing 72 hours or less because they just put it on some stupid prepaid card with fees and hand the card with instructions and no pin to you when your released. I came in for 2 days on a dui and your mixed in with all kinds of upstanding citizens and drug addicts. The upside was I got out a day and a half early and they have good water. To me this place is a hot mess and the sheet the court gives you about bringing a watch, money , shoes, wedding band etc. is incorrect. This place doesn't let you have any of that except the clothes on your body and not even the shoelaces in your shoes. They checked my medication in and said I may not get it unless it's a life or death type medication. I take my medication daily and need to to function. Just wanted to post a more accurate description of this stupid place. I am a government employee myself and this place sucks. Lot of officers dozing off in the room where they take your mugshot and ask you medical questions. Glad to see our tax dollars hard at work! So if your going to be there 72 hours or less, plan on sleeping on 3-4 chairs or having a homeless person or drug addict just coming down off drugs, sleeping next to you . 2 stars for getting out early, but I was ready to do my 48 hours on my bed . read more

Don't bring a book! They won't let you bring a book! I was bored out of my mind the whole time inside. You don't really have an option to do anything but talk to your own gender! Eat some good food if you're on a self surrender before you get in. They give you nasty whole wheat dinner roll with 8 ounces of nasty peanut butter. And you get a half ounce thing of jelly. Yeah your makeshift PPJ is gonna be dry as fuck. And they give you a packet of dry nasty Oreos. It's a jail they're spending like $.50 on us per meal! Once you get into the release tank. I was in there for like seven hours. So once you get to the release tank and expect to be let out right away, it's not gonna happen! Most the staff were nice. They are trying to make it tough so you don't end up back in jail! Don't be annoyed by the fact that you're in jail. Just tell yourself you did the crime now you are doing the time! Court send you to jail to scare you and give you punishment for the crime that you had committed. Now if you were just in there you're innocent until proven guilty. Contact the bail bondsman as soon as possible! But if you're in there you're probably not reading this so best of luck! read more
