I visited Dr. Beer a couple years ago due to a health condition and was told that they would "work with insurance companies". This was a major selling point because most functional practitioners tell you that meeting them is expensive given that their practice is not covered by insurance. I visited Dr. Beer precisely because I felt this was a great deal. It turns out this was too good to be true. My total bill was $3,500 for an assessment and lab results. The silliest part here is that Dr. Beer never actually told me the results of his detailed assessment. The messaging that was delivered to me regarding cost was misleading as it relates to value (which I would define as outcome divided by cost). The messaging implied that it was quite possible that insurance would cover part of the visit, which ended up being false (of course). Moreover, I did not actually receive any care despite the high price point that was paid by me. In any other industry, this would be considered a clear instance of abuse. The word "fraud" is strong language, but I personally believe this is a practice that should be deemed fraud. For anyone visiting Dr. Beer, I would encourage you to ask upfront what the cost of your lab results will be. If they give you a dodgy answer like "we will work with insurance companies" you should go in with the understanding that you might be given a bill that you do not like. If you do not receive an answer it is probably fair to assume that the cost will be a figure in the mid-single digit thousands of dollars like mine was. Ask yourself whether paying that sum is justified given that you might be uncertain to begin with whether Dr. Beer's practice actually does achieve better results than any benchmarks (since there is no way to benchmark doctors just in general). read more

Dr. Beer is very kind and knowledgeable. I really like him. However, his staff is rude and unprofessional. They never explain anything and just give you a bunch of papers to sign. When I ask questions, they make a face and use a tone that clearly says that at least I am not welcome to ask those questions or even more that I am stupid to ask. I heard them discussing patients loud in presence of other patients. Saying like "she is calling for the third time, I was on the phone with her for TEN TEN minutes and she can't understand". Well, guys, people are coming to you because they are sick and need help and this is your job! After talking with them, I just felt insulted and it absolutely ruined my overall experience. Would not recommend - Dr Beer is great if you get him for a few minutes but he's completely checked out. Anything that is unusual and a time when you do need to see him, the staff will just block and send you to the nurse practicioner, who btw did a very sloppy job with my examination and didn't even notice the issue that I saw myself in a mirror. And this was after a 40 min wait. Not worth it. You might be better off just going to urgent care where you see a real doctor. Administrative staff is also understaffed. this office makes me hate the medical system and people who are part of it.... and this is a private practice. read more

Very unimpressed. I like the approach of not prescribing a ton of medicine, but if you sell your patients overpriced and un-necessary vitamins, is it really any better? I never got all my vitamins, but I bought less vitamins for cheaper elsewhere and everything is improved. Also, despite never getting everything I paid for, they never gave a refund or cared. update: two years later they are asking me to pay bills that I already paid, requiring me to hunt through receipts and paperwork. After botched dental surgery and an accompanying severe intestinal episode in 2011, I started suffering from all sorts of seemingly unrelated symptoms and began a long journey through exhaustive and expensive testing. Several syndromes were suspected, but eventually supplanted by others or found to be false. While my regular doctor tried diligently to figure out what was going on, he wasn't able to find the underlying source of the problems and I was getting very thin and was in pain and distress pretty much constantly. Eventually, my issues were chalked up to middle age and food intolerance, but I knew there was more to it. That's when I decided to look for a fully-accredited functional doctor and through my research discovered Dr. Beer's office. Dr. Beer is like a medical detective. My health--both past and present--had never been so thoroughly investigated. During my first appointment with him, he interviewed me and suspected a long-dormant case of Lyme disease might be the cause of my problems. Through testing and blood work, his hunch was found to be correct. I was also suffering from a laundry-list of accompanying maladies, imbalances and deficiencies. About six months ago Dr. Beer treated me aggressively with a cocktail of antibiotics, along with holistic methods, and I am now feeling much better than I have in a long, long time. Dr. Beer spends as much time as is required with you to get the job done. He is never condescending or makes judgements about your health choices and really listens. The nurses and practitioners in his office are all cheerful, helpful and professional. The practice is fully integrative and they treat you as a whole person, not body parts. Dr.Beer and his staff are excellent. I have been going to his practice for 4 years and I have never had a problem with appointments or follow ups. Their patient portal is excellent as they communicate everything through that promptly. Although it's quite a wait to get an appointment from Dr.Beer himself but his NP staff is well trained and equipped, with very good bedside manners. Dr. Beer seems to be a very kind man, but is not. His staff is rude and will not speak to you on the phone but only via email. The root of my dissatisfaction is the miscommunication of him and his staff: - I went for an annual check up and he told me to come back in two weeks to review the results, I ask if this is included in the price and he responded yes....It was not. - I write to the email on file and receive passive aggressive responses and an unwillingness to understand that THEY misinformed (lied) me. - During my visit he asks me if anything is bothering me, I responded that I have some discomfort in my shoulder. He responded ok let me refer you to a specialist. I then received another bill. Their response was "as I mentioned that I had discomfort it is not longer considered a check up" HE DID NOT EVEN LOOK AT ME! If you want to be overcharged for services not rendered he is your doctor. Dr. Maurice Beer himself is a very capable doctor and those who actually manage to get seen by him are probably getting high quality care. He also comes across as very friendly, but I doubt that is his genuine personality, if it were he would not hire all of those mean people. I believe that the office staff and policies are a direct reflection of the physician. Unfortunately just paying for a regular visit does not get you access to him directly. To get seen by him one has to constantly purchase his very costly supplements and 'extra' services. Just get ready for those weekly emails advertising a range of services no insurance company will cover. When one chooses not to make these unnecessary purchases, his staff will just about always tell you that he is booked solid for the next three months and only one of his nurse practitioners will be able to see you. In that case, get ready for individuals fresh out of college who have a tendency to pass personal judgment and misdiagnose you. The worst thing is his office staff and nurse though, not only are they incapable of issuing referrals that actually work (I missed countless of appointments with specialists because they failed to send them or did something else wrong) they will literally lie to your face and somehow try to blame you for their incompetence. I don't know why I put up with it for as long as I did. I suppose it was complacency on my part and because at the beginning when it was still him seeing me in person I actually did receive quality care. read more

I tried making an appointment to see Dr. Beer and before I could even get an appointment they wanted my credit card information and told me if I'm more than 15 minutes late for the appointment; even if the subway breaks down and is the cause of my being late, they will cancel my appointment and bill me $50.00. I am a very punctual person who is never late ( generally arrive early for appointments) and I understand the need to keep people from coming late to their medical appointments but to tell someone they will be billed even if something happens that isn't their fault is just inhumane and illogical. Obviously, I cancelled my appointment and will not be putting healthcare in the hands of such a money hungry practice. I give this practice a big fat zero. read more

Avoid this place at all costs. I pursued integrative medicine because I was experiencing vertigo and panic attacks, which I would later find out after being admitted to the hospital were caused by a treatable heart condition. However, Dr. Beer thought the best course of treatment for my symptoms were heavy antibiotics for "Lyme Disease" (which I do NOT have as confirmed by multiple Lyme specialists) and LITHIUM supplements because my "DNA test" showed I needed them. What a crackpot. Then he had the nerve to charge me thousands of dollars for basic blood tests which I was never informed were NOT covered by insurance prior to having them done. Integrative medicine at its core is about treating the whole body system. Dr. Beer charged me a huge amount of money for a false disease reading, unfounded DNA testing, extremely limited blood tests, and dangerous supplements. Not to mention the blood infusions of dangerously high levels of vitamins. When I asked to actually have my vitamin levels tested, his response was to make another appointment with him to "talk about it." His assistant didn't even wear gloves when incorrectly removing the infusion needle and proceeding to spurt blood everywhere. This place is an utter disaster and a money-making machine profiting off the naivety and desperation of its sick patients. Do yourself a favor and find a real doctor that looks you in the eye and tells you the truth. read more

Dr. Beer is very friendly, so when I met him I thought, "nice guy! accessible!" He's an experienced physician and I believe that he knows a lot. But then I noticed that he kept the door open during my appointments so he could talk to his staff and answer their questions as they walked by his office. In the middle of my conversation with him somebody would walk by and he would switch his focus. He also answered the phone during my appointments. Other than the one time when he closed the door to do a physical exam, I never felt that I had his full attention. Rather than analyze fully my dietary issues, he handed me printed pages with diets on them and said, "here, maybe you have candida, try this, maybe you're allergic to eggs, try that." I did whatever he suggested, but without improvement. Dr. Beer uses a questionnaire that you fill out each time you come in, which assigns a numerical value to your symptoms. If the number is going down, that means you're getting better. At least, that's what it means to Dr. Beer. This was not an accurate measure of how I was feeling but it gave him the impression that I was improving when I wasn't. Dr. Beer uses specific tests to assess specific conditions. This makes sense. But if the test came back saying that I was fine, then my ongoing symptoms were not taken seriously. "Your test says you're fine," therefore, I guess, it's all in my mind? There was no attempt to probe further and get to the bottom of the issue. As a functional medicine practitioner, Dr. Beer should have gone to the next step of testing further and digging deeper for underlying causes. Instead, he offered me a supplement for anxiety, although I was there for chronic issues unrelated to anxiety, joint pain foremost among them. (I have since been diagnosed with complete cartilage loss in the knee and require a knee replacement.) Dr. Beer's message was clear: it's all in your head and you need to relax. At that point I rejected the supplement and terminated my relationship with the practice. This experience was very disappointing to me because I know what functional medicine is, and I assumed Dr. Beer would test me for SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), among other things. My symptoms spoke to the need for such a test. But for whatever reason, he never even mentioned it. Since then, I found a real functional medicine doctor and got the SIBO lactulose breath test, which confirmed that I do indeed have an infection. Thankfully, I'm now being treated for it. (2017 UPDATE - Cured. No more SIBO or h.pylori, and I am so much better!) From the standpoint of the running of the office, Dr. Beer was usually late. His staff is so-so. One of the women who works there was friendly enough, the other was surly and rude. I applaud physicians for practicing integrative medicine and being forward-thinking by taking a certification in functional medicine. Dr. Beer either dropped the ball, deemed me unworthy of his time, or is not really practicing functional medicine. In any event, it was a waste of my time and resources. By "resources" I mean the $700 (SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS) I had to lay out in order to become his functional medicine patient. This was a few years ago. No idea what the price is today in 2016. According to the reviews here, many patients like Dr. Beer very much. Maybe you will too. But I was very disappointed in my experience. read more

The person who handles inbound calls and patient check in's is combative and just plain mean. I think maybe she should be prescribe some supplements to keep her attitude in check. I have been a patient of Dr. Beer for over seven years. Dr. Beer and his staff are knowledeable in the leatest medical practices and work beyond treat-and-release methods. For me, they were able to identify chronic underlying issues that were the cause of acute issues was having. I feel a greater level of energy now. The staff at the same time has an old-fashoned personalized approach to service that is missing in most NYC medical pracictices, so I feel at home when I go there. Highly recommend! read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Beer since 1989 ( believe) when he was in a brownstone on the Upper West Side. Dr. Beer is a fabulous diagnostician and really takes his time with you. I have never felt uncomfortable to discuss any issue with Dr.Beer at all. I've always felt at ease with him and the nurse who remains in the room during the visit. Because he is an integrative MD he thinks out of the box with regard to symptoms and what might be causing them. He has never pushed the products they have. They have only been suggested if it is relevant to an issue. I also have never received an email about products as was mentioned below in another review. Not once. Unfortunately I don't have insurance and pay out of pocket. This is the one reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5. The cost is quite prohibitive now for me to see Dr. Beer so I now see Jessica B. the NP who is wonderful. Still not cheap but more manageable. I highly recommend this office. I LOVE Dr. Beer! He's extremely knowledgeable, kind and compassionate. He always seems to be well read on the latest research and looks at mystery diseases, like mine, with interest. He wants to get at the root cause and will order tests that most allopathic doctors haven't even heard of.
