They told me more troubleshooting was needed. Dailey Electric identified two (2) problems in less than 15 minutes. The Finger Lakes Power Systems tech who is certified and factory-trained with 8 years experience did not discover a blown fuse in the transfer switch in 3+ hours. Dailey discovered the blown fuse in the transfer switch in 5 minutes. The Finger Lakes Power Systems tech who is certified and factory-trained with 8 years experience did not discover that the controller was melted in 3+ hours. Dailey discovered the melted controller in 5 minutes. The Finger Lakes Power Systems tech who is certified and factory-trained with 8 years experience could NOT FIX the problem in 3+ hours! Dailey FIXED the problem in less than 2 hours. FLPS billed me for $950.00 + in labor, while not repairing the unit in 3 visits. Dailey billed me for $250.00 in labor, and fixed the unit in 2 visits. FLPS charges $250.00 per hour. This includes travel time! Dailey charges $125.00 per hour. Travel time is excluded. The Finger Lakes Power Systems tech who is certified and factory-trained with 8 years experience recommended replacing the entire unit for more than $15K. Dailey repaired the unit, which is functioning perfectly today. A savings to me of over $14K!!!! Since Dailey fixed the problem in under 2 hrs while the Finger Lakes Power Systems tech who is certified and factory-trained with 8 years experience NEVER did figure out what was wrong, I requested a full refund from Tara Barnhart, the Service Manager. She refused. I paid FLPS' bill by credit card. I immediately disputed FLPS' charge on my credit card on 7/1/2026. The credit card company contacted FLPS on 7/3/2026, 7/15/2026, 7/30/2026, 8/4/2026, 8/14/2026. FLPS owner, Mr. Dan Lewis, DID NOT RESPOND to any of the five (5) repeated requests from the credit card company. The credit card refunded the money I paid, in full, on 9/9/2026. Lessons learned: 1. If you don't really care about getting your generator fixed and have money to burn, Finger Lakes Power Systems is the company for you. They employ techs who are certified and factory-trained with 8 years experience, but who cannot diagnose simple problems quickly or in a cost effective manner. 2. I requested that we use text messaging and so we communicated that way, which I prefer. He gave me a written quote and explained the process to me. When he said everything was included, I was skeptical. I asked if that included the outside wire, the charge from NYSEG for the upgrade, and a 3rd party inspector (required by NYSEG). He said yes. He explained it would take one day. We scheduled a WED and everything went well except for a minor snag. The electrical lineman from NYSEG was waiting for Wes to show up at 9am when Wes just wanted the service disconnected and he would be there an hour later. I called Wes and he explained to them that he just wanted a disconnect and then they should come back for the re-connect. Then Wes went to work, wired up the panel very cleanly, and got power back up by the end of the day. He didn't finish all the labeling (my panel was an ugly, unlabeled mess before), so he cae back a few days later to help with that. I really appreciated talking to the guy who would do the work; that way there wasn't much that would be lost in communication. Wes also told me his experience working at the Port Authority in New Jersey on giant cranes. So he has many many years of experience. You should also be prepared that Wes will recommend lots of upgrades because "things aren't done right". Like GFCI outlets in the kitchen where there is water. This is code today but wasn't code many years ago. So, take these recommendations seriously, but he's not trying to oversell you like a car salesman. I may be slightly biased because my structural contractor, whom I love, recommended Wes. But Wes did a great job and earns this 5-star recommendation. The price was roughly $1800 for the job. No hidden fees.

I did a net present value (NPV) analysis to calculate the rate of return on my investment and it comes up as borderline, lower than most of my investments but higher than some. If my roof orientation was optimum, this project would probably be a yes. If I determine that electricity prices are going to go up substantially, I may still do this. The bottom line is however that this company is very up-front and diligent in explaining the work to prospective customers.

The representative said she could help, but the call focused on collecting detailed information to pass to a specialist rather than answering general questions. I was asked for my billing address and the exact addresses of all properties. When I asked why this was needed at such an early stage, she explained they use addresses to look up assessment values, square footage, and photos or details from sites like Zillow before an audit. I explained that online data often does not reflect conditions relevant to insulation needs, basement/attic size, etc and that I was happy to provide full details once we determined it made sense to proceed. I was told I likely would not receive a call back without providing addresses. After giving one address for a property we were open to getting a quote on, I was told a callback would take about four days. Five minutes later, I received another call saying they would not be able to help, without any explanation given. Overall, it appeared the priority was evaluating properties to decide business viability, instead of first discussing services or eligibility.
