Every few years, I like to get a little fancy and fly somewhere beautiful, buy some nice things, eat some fancy food, and stay somewhere nice. This time I chose San Diego and to stay at the Intercontinental San Diego. What. A. Beautiful. Hotel. Everything is immaculate from the elevators, gym, room, and even the parking lot was nice and didn't feel grungy. It is also located in a prime spot within walking distance to downtown, the port, and a bunch of other things to do. I am already getting excited just thinking about going back there. I booked the hotel through a luxury hotel program called The Edit and was stoked about all the extra benefits that came with staying there. The reason I am taking a star off is that nobody working there seemed to know exactly how it works. My final invoice seemed incorrect and was missing some of my benefits. I called probably around 2-3 times to work it out but ended up giving up.

The hotel is located at a good location - 5 minutes walk from SD cruise terminal, 5 minutes from Santa Fe train station, 15 mins from SD Airport (drive), 10 minutes from USS Midway, 10 minutes from New Children's Museum (drive), 5 minutes from Little Italy (drive). Hotel upkeep of room and amenities are good and satisfied with the comfort of the bed, pillow and overall room condition. Room access is secured somewhat by the need for card key to access room floors. The pool is on the smaller size and can get crowded when the weather is nice and it's busy season - was staying just before 4th of July. Overall good value for the hotel. As for water front view, it's subpar unless you have the corner waterfront rooms, or perhaps the first 2-3 rooms on each side of the building. These would be the room numbering 01-08 (01-02 would be corner rooms) - last two digits with first one or two digits representing floor level). Continental breakfast only includes cold foods but they do have a good spread of pastries, cut fruits, chia seeds jars, and the delicious La Fermiere yogurt. Full breakfast buffet includes hot food options both seems to be same things on both mornings we went. They provided kids with some kids activity stuff which was nice. Good value if you have complimentary breakfast voucher or just need to have breakfast at hotel to get going. If not, there are other places like cafes and bakeries to check out around the area.

Ketchup jar with expiration date. We got served this in 6/7/2026.

TL;DR: DO NOT STAY HERE. One month expired food provided in room service. Security used to intimidate as part of their process to collect complaint information handled via their insurance. 1/ FOOD SAFETY + SERVICE We stayed two nights at the InterContinental San Diego because the InterContinental is a refined hotel chain around the world that we have enjoyed because of its high standards. Not at this location. They served us condiments like this ketchup jar with 2 month expired date (we stayed early June 2026) with our breakfast room service order. When contacted on the in room phone, they did not take any action to address the issue nor apologize. Instead, they promised the good and beverage manager would arrive to our room to discuss in 5 minutes, but he never showed up. I walked down to the front desk and brought the expired condiment jars, and asked to see the food and beverage manager. He showed up in minutes, and stated he never got a call or email from the in room phone team to follow up with me. He was apologetic and stated he never saw this ketchup jar before, only the Heinz ketchup which we actually received the day before for room service. I assume he debugged this with his staff. He was clearly taking this seriously. My experience with front desk and security was far worse and the reason why I am writing this review. Noah (sp) the front desk manager echoed apology, but also initiated their procedure to use their security staff to collect information from me because food borne illness claims are an insurance issue. It wasn't clear to me that this was the case. And when security showed up, they made sure to treat me with the same aggressive, transactional, harsh manner they would treat someone they need to escort out of the bar for drinking too much. When I asked why I had to give her the info rather than start, she said, "I cannot tell you that." This immediately escalated an already unpleasant situation. When I asked the security person to understand the next steps, she folded her arms, stood up straight, and said we will contact you when we are ready to. I clearly saw this sequence of events as intimidation and retribution for reporting a health safety issue. Noah was apologetic for this experience, handled the situation OK, but the security person never apologized or acknowledged how they escalated the situation. All in all, I wouldn't have left this review if it wasn't for this uncalled for and intimidating encounter with security. I do not feel safe staying at this hotel... not only because of the food, but because how the hotel uses security to intimidate guests as part of their process for food borne illness complaints. We reported this to the local public health authority. 2/ROOM The room was very mid for an InterContinental hotel. It had the high class toiletries, but they didn't have bathrobes or slippers. When you call room service, they can bring bathrobes. They didn't give us slippers because they said the slippers haven't been ordered yet. The pillows were flat and lifeless. Very different from the full down pillows at other InterContinentals. Windows are thin. We could hear the trains and cars outside thru the late night. The AC white noise helped muffle this. 3/LOCATION This is the main reason why to stay here. It's 10 minutes drive from the airport, 5-10 minutes walk into Little Italy, and there's even a small farmers market on Saturday morning just outside the hotel. You're also about 10-15 minutes from all other locations you'd want to see around the city, like Balboa Park, Ocean Beach, and Gaslamp.

Fresh clean modern decor with beautiful views of the bay from room, restaurants, pool, terrace and lobby. Everything clean and well appointed. Staff was so friendly and most helpful. It's a great location for a hotel. Located across the street from the Aircraft carrier Midway and a few minute walk to Seaport Village. A quick Uber ride to little Italy and many other fun activities. Enjoyed the stay.

The hotel is in downtown with amazing oceanfront views of USS Midway and cruise ships. We were very grateful it is within walking distance to USS Midway since we went there twice. The pool is small and very shallow at only 3ft deep so it's more of a wading pool. The view from the pool deck is spectacular. The gym has amazing views and a spin class room. Overall it was a pleasant stay but they do charge $50/night for parking and $50/night for amenities fee so all the fees can add up. There isn't much going on at night immediately surrounding the hotel.

Attended a professional conference at the Intercontinental recently. Great conference facilities. Very comfortable with that ample seating. Conference rooms and restrooms near conference rooms were impeccably clean. During break very good hors d'oeuvres were served along with coffee, tea and various soft drink drinks.

I stayed here bc I had a free weekend night stay via my Ambassador status w/ IHG. The property had some positives & negatives: Positives: On waterfront w/ great view from the top 18th Floor; Destiny checked in with me after check in to make sure everything was okay; Garrett, the bartender at the Layover bar at the pool was super cool; Eman, the bartender at Vistal on property was very friendly; Maritza in the lounge took great care of us. We found out she spent some time on Lāna'i, so we appreciated the Aloha. The lounge patio was a nice place to hang out after dinner; Negatives: I'm still trying to figure out what I receive for my high level status. The message said Welcome Amenity and room upgrade. The only amenity we received was some small cold drink and a towel. The room was not upgraded; $66 valet fee; The free weekend room was $50 more vs booking a regular Club Lounge access room. I already paid $225 for the Ambassador membership that includes a free night. There should be better disclosure that a free weekend room costs more, so that the customer knows the full cost of a "free" weekend night; Annoying electronic music nearby that started in the day on Sat, and carried on until late Sat night. Overall a positive stay bc of the good service. But as an aside re: IHG, I had a qualifying stay earlier in the year. However, I was not granted a free night bc I did not book the stay "properly", according to the property. I called IHG's Ambassador Hotline and they were supposed to respond re: the foregoing within 72 hours: No return call. I call the Hotline again to obtain a refund. I never received a return call again. I know I will not renew my Ambassador membership, bc I was lied to by a representative at IHG about how to redeem the free night. However, I am sitting on the fence whether I will stay at IHG properties going forward. Redeeming rewards requires much more effort vs the competition, and IHG does not give full disclosure vs Marriott, Hyatt & Hilton.

We had a little staycation here for to celebrate our wedding anniversary! Parking overnight was a bit steep, but that is normal for hotel stays. We didn't really have a chance to use any of the amenities, like the gym or pool. Our room was the perfect temperature and bed was pretty comfortable. A few days prior we also came here for the 4th of July Red, White, and Boom event. It was an all you can eat spread with tomahawk steak, sliders, and more! It was the perfect spot to watch the fireworks!

I've always stayed at the Residence Inn across the way and have always been curious what the Intercontinental is like. It is sad to report that this will be my first and last time staying in this hotel. The good: lots of parking, good location, clean bed and sheets, close to restaurants, and pet-friendly. The bad: parking is expensive, the elevator layout is weird, one of the nightstand plugs did not work (there are about 3/4 plugs per stand), the TV stopped working and kept having a "rebooting" message, you can't use the refrigerator because it's packed with drinks that you have to pay for, the front desk phone number is dead at certain times in the evening, probably because when I checked in, the front desk employee was watching videos on his phone, etc. Let's say there were more cons than pros. I was there for only a couple of days, and thank God it was only a couple of days. On a good note, we saw fireworks since it was Labor Day weekend. If you don't want all the hidden or sneaky extra charges go to the Residence Inn across the way. 100 times better!

Downgrading my review to 1 Corporate replied to my email on Day 1, promising someone would "make things right." During my entire 3D/2N stay, no one ever contacted me. At checkout, I got explicit confirmation: my room was a Classic. So instead of the guaranteed Ambassador upgrade, I was actually downgraded from what I booked - a Premium. Compensation? Just 10K points. That's what InterCon usually give when there's no upgrade - but I was ALSO downgraded. How does that make sense? And Noah at the Front Desk - calling you out. If you're new, fine, but why were you handling the Ambassador check-in desk? Lessons learned: I guess I have to switch loyalties whenever I am in San Diego.

We arrived the lobby of this property before regular check in time, shortly after we landed in San Diego. Thanks to our ambassadors status, our room was ready for us ahead of time. We then proceeded to enjoy our lunch on the terrace. We ordered rock fish tacos, tuna tostadas, guacamole, and flatbread. All the items, including those from the happy hour menu (available starting at 1pm), were fantastic. The overall hotel was modern and clean. We enjoyed the spacious and comfortable room. As a runner, I appreciated the spacious fitness center with multiple foam rollers and fresh fruits. The staff was friendly and helpful, ensuring that we have a pleasant stay.

The hotel is located near the USS Midway museum. Our stay over the weekend was nice mini vacation from OC. The hotel was decorated nicely for the holidays. The staff was friendly and helpful in explaining the accommodations and services available. We had a good time using the amenities at the hotel like the fitness center and patio restaurant and bar.

We stayed at Intercontinental San Diego in December and are still talking about the wonderful service and spectacular views from our guest room. In/out parking was very convenient and the proximity to SS Midway was ideal! I've been in the hospitality industry for decades and RECOMMEND this beautiful and well managed hotel.

I live locally and will pick up a friend staying there. Is there a driveway in which they can meet me in front?

Nice roundabout valet area to pick up your friend if I recall accurately!

Does the property have a EV charger?

I want to avoid the construction view , what side of the building / rooms should i ask for?

The construction is not too bad at this point and the project buildings are enclosed at this point. To completely avoid any construction site views, ask for the North side of the building for your guestroom location

Hello, Is the self parking at the hotel in and out privilege for the daily parking?

Yes, you can come and go as you wish

Is the pool heated?? Visiting this weekend with my kids. Also hours of pool? How much is bed& breakfast if I wanna add?

The fourth floor rooftop pool is heated to 80-82 degrees year round and has a great view of the harbor. Access is 24/7 with room key. I would not recommend breakfast here, as there are 50+ restaurants within kid-walking distance (0.3 miles). Also…

Is there airport shuttle service and what time available?

No. But there is a city bus (Route 922) that stops right at the hotel and goes to the airport or use rideshare. I've always used that bus and had no problems. And it is just as fast as waiting for rideshare etc

    How much is parking?

    $39/night now

    Is the gym currently open?

Hi Brian, Effective today we have been allowed to open our fitness center with a maximum of 10% capacity, which would allow no more than 8 people at a time in the fitness center.

    Free parking on premises?

Hello! We paid $21 per day for parking. Idk if there tus free parking close by.

Is this hotel ok for children?

Hi Grace, Yes, we do have plenty of families here during the summer time in particular. We have an outdoor pool, Gelato shop and large lawn area in front of the hotel that the kids do enjoy.

I am so happy I found this place via AARP! Located in the heart of the Gaslamp District, I had never heard of this hotel prior to searching. Upon checking in, the desk clerk was very friendly, efficient, and answered any questions that I had. As for the room, he put us up on the top (4th) floor. Room is the perfect size for two people. Very clean, warm, inviting, and has some really cute and convenient amenities such as a pineapple themed USB quad port at the desk, along with a Keurig machine (had I known that I'd have brought my own Starbucks K-cups)! The bed was nice and comfy with lots of soft but supportive pillows and two separate comforter blankets so you're not fighting for covers if you are sharing the bed with someone or your significant other. Bathroom is very modern and clean. A hairdryer is hanging in the bathroom as well. The only item missing was an iron and an ironing board; however, you can request that at the front desk. If you are looking for a hotel with a gym, laundry facilities on site, and a full breakfast buffet or continental breakfast, then this place is not for you; however, if those things don't matter to you {I typically look for those types of hotels during a longer stay) then this hotel is all you need. You also get other unexpected creature comforts such as Starbucks coffee in the lounge along with 4 different blends of water as well as these cute pineapple cookies in the afternoon. Based in Seattle, WA, I am so happy I found this chain as I will be on the lookout and consider staying in other cities. Parking is available in a garage connected to the hotel next door for a fee. Also, bikes are available in the lobby for getting around (not sure if gratis or for a fee). I definitely recommend staying here! Location wise, it is in the heart of downtown. Everything is within walking distance. Immediately outside of the hotel, you can get to the Star of India as well as USS Midway museum. Both are must visit places if you are in downtown SD. Little Italy is also just about a 10-minute walk. It is a great place to visit the farmer's market in the morning and explore the food scene at night. Balboa Park and the SD Zoo are also very close and easily within driving distance. In terms of the hotel itself, we had the fortune of being upgraded for free AND given a free late check-out as well. They do have a balcony with a bar and plenty of seating. The balcony has a killer view. I got quite a bit of work done there every morning and it is a great way to start the day. The room itself is spacious and can fit 3-4 people since the couch can be a pullout. That being said, the couch wasn't that comfortable, but I survived without breaking my back. However, it did take me the first night to get used to. The view from the room is a killer and it's hard to get tired of it. All of their rooms face the ocean, so don't worry when you book, you will get a killer view regardless. Breakfast is complimentary, but their breakfast is very average. It is very hectic in the morning and the food is not the best, but it is included in the hotel. If you get tired of the breakfast here, again Little Italy is within walking distance with much better food options in the morning. They also have a tiny gym. It's got a treadmill and dumbbells. They don't have everything, but the equipment was sufficient for what I needed. Parking here can be quite expensive. I believe it was around $35 or $45 per day. But again, the convenient location of this hotel is hard to beat, so I think the parking price is worth it especially since parking is expensive everywhere in downtown SD and also hard to find. Overall, we had a great stay here. I do wish the breakfast was better for the price we are paying per night at the hotel and I wish their pullout couch was a bit more comfy. However everything being considered, I do highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting downtown SD. The location is just way too convenient.

They aren't very soft or spongy. Nonetheless, I was able to sleep on them sufficiently well. We can be a little picky about beds and getting good sleep, and we slept fine. Unfortunately, like many hotels, the sink, toilet, and shower/tub are all in one room, making it less convenient for two people to be doing things at the same time, especially since there is only one sink. There was a decent amount of lighting and space for toiletry items. We had no major complaints about the room, but we did have a broken toilet paper fixture in the bathroom on the wall next to the toilet that resulted in the toilet paper falling on the floor several times. Service was super friendly, but it was difficult to reach the front desk at times without a very long wait on the phone. When I called down to request a luggage rack for the room, I was told someone would bring one up, but it never came. I had to walk to the front desk to ask for one, which was later delivered. They do have an automated attendant that lets you request a limited number of items, and I was able to request a robe for my wife that way. While we were there, the elevators were a problem for a lot of people. For part of the time we were there, some in our tower were not working, causing relatively long waits for the remaining elevators and sometimes multiple stops on the way down or up at peak use times. The hotel said they were working on it, and things did seem to improve a little by the time we checked out. The property itself is beautiful and laid out well for its limited space in this part of town. Once inside, and even outside when walking the grounds near the pool, you are in a bit of a protected oasis that doesn't make you feel like you are sandwiched between the bay and the street out front. We ate outside every day with the conference, and the area we were in was super pleasant. There are a number of restaurants on property, but since we were usually eating with the conference, we didn't have time to try any except for the Marketplace. It was very expensive for most items, but the quality was really good, and we never had much of a wait. They serve Starbucks coffee here, but you can probably save a bit of money if you get that (or mobile order) from the on-site Starbucks, which is in a different part of the building. The food served at the conference was of good quality. If you go to many conferences, you'll find it to be competitive with any of the better resorts, though, in my opinion and as one might expect, it doesn't outshine the Ritz-Carlton or certain J.W. Marriott facilities. The food service staff for the conference were excellent, helpful, and fast. The hotel is in a very convenient area downtown on the bay next to the San Diego Convention Center. Traffic in the short distance between here and the freeway can be bad depending on time of day or events happening at either the convention center, downtown, or at Petco Park, where the Padres play, but the distance is short enough for it not to be much of a headache in most cases. I doubt you'll find very many cities with access this easy from the hotel to the airport and all of the local attractions, including, in this case, the Gaslamp District, Little Italy, Coronado, the bayside attractions, Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, and more. Hotel parking is expensive, of course, so if you don't really need a car, I highly recommend using Uber or Lyft or walking to get around to the nearest things. Overall, I would certainly stay here again, and I do highly recommend this hotel if you are attending a conference or vacationing in this part of the city and can afford the price point.

Room with view of bay and balcony - worth the upgrade! Food was traditional blah hotel food except when we got the blackened chicken sandwich for room service for late night meal and it was delicious!!!

Stayed here for a week, worked a conference at the convention center…read more Convenience cannot be beat! Easy 5 minute walk to the convention center. Sky bridge access to Petco park. Our first room was small and the bed was basically down to the springs. It was horrible. However, front desk quickly fixed this and moved us to a new room with a newer mattress, which also happened to be slightly bigger. The beds are soft and springy so just be aware of that if you're used to firmer beds. They also gave us firmer pillows (non down) which was great. Bell hops are friendly! Valet was quick and easy, but super pricey at $70/night. Having a coffee shop, restaurant and bar onsite was great. Depending on the location of your room, it can be loud all night! We were facing the convention center and you can hear the trains go by, which was fine. But our first night (with the bad bed) was facing a parking lot and it was like a party was right outside our window till 2am. Overall, good stay. Remodel makes it look new, though tubs show wear.

It was served in a plastic wine cup. A hotel charging overpriced wine and overpriced rooms should at least be able to provide a real wine glass. When checking in, I asked the front desk, since the room wasn't available until 5 PM, does that mean we can check out at 12 PM? The front desk said no, check‑out time is still 11 AM. This is ridiculous and unfair to customers. This hotel is just disappointing. The website's advertising it's not accurately reflect the guest experience, and poor customer service.

I paid an arm and a leg for the room but it was absolutely massive and I had sliding glass doors directly onto my own private patio which was right next to the pool overlooking the ocean, it was really incredible despite how outdated the room felt, somehow the size of the room made it more modern and it felt clean. The people at the front desk were young, fun, outgoing, really friendly and I appreciated that. They told me about some happy hour they were having later in the day and I felt very welcome here unlike other hotels I stayed at in the San Diego area. The bathroom was huge in my room, very weird vibe, like felt cabin-like, I don't know how else to explain it, but it was spacious, big countertop by the sink plenty of room to get ready. The coffee bar had an enormous countertop which was great for keeping all of my things, huge mirrors everywhere too. The bed was really comfortable, again great view outside, awesome staff. It was so nice to be able to walk the boardwalk and pop back in here whenever I needed to grab something or use the restroom. Walking distance to everything. Highly recommend, I would definitely stay here again. But I probably won't because the cost is INSANE. Sorry but it is. Also housekeeping found my jewelry box loaded with jewelry and returned it to the front desk who subsequently shipped it back to my house for me. For a charge of course but I do appreciate the honesty of the staff that goes a long long way! Thank you!!

Three cheers for Sandra and for the Del!…read more Service has gone downhill since Hilton acquired it. But we love this location so much we suck it up now and then to have a little staycation in this magical place. At check in time there was a huge line: the computers had broken! We left our luggage and got a snack at ENO Market. And luckily by the time we finished, the line had cleared and they had brought over extra folks to work reception. We were lucky to get Sandra who normally works at the more upscale Shore House on property. She was very apologetic about the line and also saw that we have stayed here at several times. My sweetie is Hilton Gold and they were initially going to upgrade us from our basic The Views room to a "Victorian room with a view". No thank you! Del veterans know that the historic hotel rooms are small and with no privacy, because of the courtyard. So Sandra looked again and managed to get us a beautiful upgrade to the ocean view room in The Views, which was amazing. And when we woke up, we had a note under the door saying we also had complimentary buffet breakfast at the veranda because we have an American Express Hilton card... and we also got $100 off our meal the night before at Serea! So in short an amazing stay that was an incredible value for the Del. Sometimes we stay somewhere else "cheaper" in Coronado and then come out and hang here. But this was a super deal. The credit card is absolutely worth getting if you like the Del! (last pro tip: service at the hotel can be spotty and the food very expensive if you don't have a credit. ENO market and pizzeria is the best value on property. But if you get Brett as your server at Serea, and sit outside, you are still sure to have a magical time!)

First, the good: The property has been nicely upgraded since I last stayed here in 1978…read more Now the rest. We checked in at 5pm. Thankfully the line was not long but the process takes a while so you can still wait 10 minutes even if you are first in line. The clerk was very nice but I could sense she was going to shaft us and sure enough we ended up in a tiny room that was down a long corridor with a view of nothing but rooftops. Probably one of the worst rooms in the hotel and maybe used to house the maids but now sold as a regular room to maximize revenue. So naturally we marched back to the front desk and thankfully found another clerk who could not have been more wonderful. Shocker, she was unable to find anything else that night (800 rooms, 5pm checkin, nada) but was able to convince the manager to let us upgrade the following day to a higher category room for $75/night (regularly $225). Of course this means packing up after one night and checking into a new room but we decided to do it because the first room was so mediocre. The next morning we stopped at the front desk at noon and were surprised and delighted to find the new room ready. It was like night and day - about 2x-3x larger with an elevated sitting area, a couch, and a sea view even though it was not ocean front. Well worth the upgrade fee though kind of sad that you have to pay extra just to get yourself removed from the worst ROH. Not that everything was perfect - the following morning we were awakened to children running wild in the room above ours (apparently a special turret room or something) - it was so bad that I had to knock on the door and was greeted by a displeased parent who apologized and said they were checking out. Bueno. Don't come to this hotel enjoy the water. The ocean is polluted by sewage from TJ and not recommended for bathing. The next day we arrived at the pool only to find it was closed for the day after a child had exploding diarrhea. So much for that. Someone asked management if they could use the special spa pool reserved for mucky mucks but was told that was off limits. On the plus side beach drink service was excellent, but $8 for a diet coke plus a mandatory service charge seems excessive. Similarly I think it was $25 for a cookie and a couple of soft drinks at the lobby snack shop. I was tempted to buy a yogurt parfait but I could not justify it as the cups were only half filled. It is one thing to gouge customers, quite another to cheapen the product. For those who want to save $$ there is a chipotle across the street from the property where you can get large soft drinks (and return for free refills, as the cashier explained) for $3. If you plan to spend all your time at the resort, save yourself the parking gouge by taking a $31 rideshare to/ from the airport. Overall I can say that the staff was very nice, the bar area is fun and the food served at the hotel restaurants is excellent. However I do not plan to return as there are so many properties in San Diego that have nicer rooms, nicer pools and nicer beaches for a fraction of the price.
