Let…read moreme start off by saying, I'm an avid bus rider, and the On-Call service is a fantastic service if you are in Marina and only need to go somewhere in Marina. It's $1.50 (WOW!) and you call up or use the app to set up a pick-up and drop-off time. It's like a really cheap taxi, except it only goes places in Marina. It's perfect for me because I live and work in Marina. I've only used this service a hand full of times now because I don't always know exactly when my work for the day will be done, and therefore don't know when to schedule. But I have used it a few times. My problem with it is this: it's not reliable (in my opinion, from the few times I've used it.) The drivers are so friendly, and when it works, it works. And did I mention it's only $1.50? It's that cheap for ANYONE! As for the unreliability thing: one of the times I had a pick-up scheduled, when the driver was outside he called me to let me know and I went right out. Another time, I got a text from the service letting me know that the bus was a minute or so away. All great right? Well... another time I waited outside for over 30 minutes and by that time my boyfriend was off work and just came to pick me up. I called them to cancel and they had no idea why the driver wasn't there by that point. Why didn't I call sooner, you ask? Because I know how buses are, I know they can be late or delayed, and I didn't have another option so I just waited patiently. That leads to today. I had scheduled a 3:15 ride. I realized I would probably be off sooner than that, so I called, cancelled that ride, and scheduled one for 2:30. Around 2:30, I peeked out of my work to see if they were there, they weren't, so I grabbed my stuff, clocked out and went out to wait. I waited until 3 o'clock, (again, waiting patiently) and finally called to see if they were coming and what the ETA was. The man on the phone said that it was cancelled because the driver was there and didn't see me so he had called them and left. I may not have been outside at 2:30 on the DOT but I was not out there past 2:32. The guy said that there's a five minute window. Then why did he leave so early? He said they only wait 2 minutes. Okay, but you can't count those two minutes BEFORE 2:30! "Fivee minute window" my tush! My question is this: why would I get a call one time, a text another, and another time no notice at all? AND he left before I could even walk outside. If you're going to call people for their ride, do it every time. If you're going to send automated texts, do it every time. If you're not going to do either, then don't do them ever! Luckily, I managed a ride, otherwise I would've been stuck there. Oh, and when I arrived home, the bus was right on my street... How annoying is that? Like I said, this is a great service. I just wish it were more consistent. If you live in Marina and travel in Marina, you should definitely try this service. Just make sure to be clear, ask questions, and apparently be outside super early.

I've been a fan of Uber since this service first started. Back in the day, you would call and…read morereserve a taxi. They'd not show up. You'd try to get a taxi in a crowded place like Las Vegas or Milan and wait in line for hours. Some taxi services had the worst cars ever, with no AC and pretty crazy aggressive drivers. We needed something better. Then... Uber came along! The drivers are unique individuals making their way through life. Their stories, if they care to share them, can be epic, shocking and/or inspiring! It's not a panacea but it certainly changed the transportation industry and helped many people with cars, get some income flowing on their own schedule. I could tell you some crazy and/or fun uber stories but I will leave that for another day! Life is good with Uber.

Where I come from Uber is a bad four letter word. Why is that? Because their whole business model…read moreis based on a lie. They claim they are a 'shared ride' company. This allows them to avoid all the rules, regulations, and taxes that real transportation companies have to pay. Real taxi drivers must show proficiency in English, have a clean driving record and have no felonies. With no checks and balances you have no idea what you are getting. Your Uber driver may have been in jail that morning. He may have a lousy driving record or be a convicted stalker. You just don't know. Saving a couple of dollars is not worth risking your life. Go with a pro instead.
