The Monterey trolley is a great free service to get you around the hot spots of downtown Monterey and the coast. It's convenient for many hotels in the area to help you get to the wharf, cannery, and the aquarium. It does only go in one direction. So you will have to take it all the way around, you can't back track and go in the other direction. The drivers were nice, even though some do drive a little fast. If you have small kids or an adult with limited mobility, I'd sit on the seats that face forward not sideways. On the sideways seats my kids (and I!) were sliding back and forth. read more

I live out of state and visit the Monterey Peninsula several times a year because my mother resides at Carmel Hills Care Center. She is wheelchair bound and not able to assist with getting in/out of vehicles. Therefore, we rely on MST rides to take her to personal visits such as hair salons and so forth. We have had more negative encounters on MST rides than positive ones. The worst incident occurred during Easter weekend. Our plans were to attend a church service and then lunch at a local restaurant. While securing the bookings, we advised the scheduler of the times we needed to be at each place because we had a reservation at the restaurant and church starts at a set time. We were at the designated places over the recommended 15 minutes pickup time. On Easter Sunday the bus was close to two hours late which caused us to be over an hour late for church. We had to keep calling the dispatcher Chris repeatedly to find out when we would be picked up. He was downright rude and hung up on the receptionist at Carmel Hills Care Center. We were over thirty minutes late for our lunch reservation which shortened the time we could spend at the restaurant. Fortunately, the weather was warm because the bus was late picking us up from the restaurant. Overall, it was an incredibly stressful day which should have been a relaxing, pleasant day. I find the practices at MST rides unprofessional, inconsiderate, and disrespectful to the disability community. Since the peninsula is a major tourist area, you would think they would schedule additional drivers during peak times. read more

The buses are never on time, and texting the number doesn't tell you when the buses will actually come, it only tells you when the buses SHOULD come. Today I got to a stop at 2:22, the bus comes at 2:25, it is now 3: 00 and the bus is still nowhere in sight so I had to order myself a Lyft right now. I don't know if it's just our bad luck, but my husband and I really struggled to ride the free trolley. We first attempted to ride it to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in the morning, but apparently they happened to be having an Italian Festival in the area and closed off several streets where the stops were located. Us and several others waited in confusion, not knowing that they weren't going to be stopping by at all. So after wasting an hour and a half, we just walked the 30 minutes to the aquarium. Then on our way back we finally got a trolley to stop, only to have the driver reject us for not having enough room even though a few people got off--it was only myself and my husband waiting. Ok.. so I'm standing in line at the Salinas transit center for the 20 to monterey.. and this female bus driver walks right up to me and says excuse me so I move a little and at that moment she said excuse me a little louder and said that I need to give her six feet and just as rude as she can mind you.. she had way more than enough room to get in the bus but decided to give me a hard time because I couldnt read her mind. So I told her just how rude it was to approach someone and then demand them to move because of some kind of authority complex.. so then she called somebody and told them that I was disrespectful to her and just refused to do what the tax payers pay her to do (drive a bus) and after all that when it's time to pay I got and closer to her then when she approached me. like 18 inches so her whole paranoia was b/s.. this lady is very unstable, misinformed and for some reason she is allowed to valuable cargo around... please do something about her.. at the very least have her retrained read more

Poor quality company that hires poor quality/reckless drivers like the driver of Bus 2202 coming down Broadway at 8:40am this morning that decided to suddenly pull out into my lane which I was travelling 30mph in without signalling quickly cutting me off and forcing me into the left lane and almost into another car. There was a Seaside Police Officer that saw the entire thing and flashed his lights at the driver and the driver just stuck their hand out waving like it wasn't their fault. Your driver almost totalled my Mercedes and caused me to nearly hit a brand new Audi S7 that was in the lane that I was forced into by your reckless/intoxicated driver. read more

Regarding the free trolley running through the Monterey coastline: OK, finding a stop, wondering if one's coming, wondering if it will stop (one flew past us on a direct line), wondering where it will stop, and fighting off latecomers who try to cut might be a bit of a challenge for some, requiring a little bit of investigation and planning, but IT'S FREE, people, and it's cool. Best of all, it makes a weird SCHPUNKA SCHPUNKA sound for a whistle (?) that some smart hip-hop or indie artist or engineer needs to record for a percussion sample. read more

I used to take the 45 to get to school. It used to take forty-five minutes, then they switched schedules multiple times and while it didn't take much longer the bus only came every hour and a half. I've also been waiting at bus stops and been driven past by the line that's DEFINITELY supposed to stop there. Were they late? That's not my fault! I've arrived at stops minutes before the bus is supposed to and found out that the bus came by early and didn't wait. The list does go on a bit but I'm not in a bad mood so I'll stop here! read more

As our hotel already charged daily for parking, and you cannot really park AT the aquarium, we found the MST Trolley. It's free, hop on, hop off and a great way to get to all the Monterey touristy attractions. The stops are not well marked, however and the map on their website appears specific, but isn't really. Once you get on though you can pretty much go anywhere on Cannery Row and between the Aquarium at one end and downtown Monterey at the other. The drivers were very personable but did not offer much guidance, which was a bit surprising. They should make their maps more specific with streets and hours of operation and make a printed version available in the hotels. read more

I am almost always happy with the service I receive from the drivers. I wish some buses ran more often -- the wait can get very long, and some buses do not run on weekends, which makes it difficult for me. I have had one bad experience with a woman driver who really needs to find another line of work. She has intentionally left me at the curb twice now, the last time, I was standing in the pouring rain. She smiled at me and shrugged her shoulders as she pulled away. I reported her and MST said something would be done about it. I sure hope it is. She doesn't belong around people at all. read more

As a Public Transit Person in the bay area (County connection,BART&AC transit). I prefer MST. The previous reviews of MST are no longer accurate. When i first come to Monterey the service was not great, bus were late, and some bus stop changes were not announced. However service has improved since the JAZZ Lines were done and on April 26,2014 MST runs JAZZ buses every 15 minutes or less M-F (30 Minutes at MPC) and 30 min on Saturdays. The only issue i have had is the lack of communication between the company, bus drivers & passengers. One the off campus MPC stop was under-construction some drivers did not detour into the campus, while other did. the company confirmed that they were supposed to in a Facebook response. Also people who attend MPC should be aware the service to the Aquarium is not provided on JAZZ A between 9-6:40pm. Board the B at the off campus stop. People riding from Sand City to the Aquarium between 9-6:40. Need to board a Jazz B to the Aquarium. The majority of the drivers are nice and polite, some are very Friend and me and my group of friends well. I have taken MST from Monterey to Santa Cruz in less then 2 hours. II enjoy Jazzing it around and overall MST is a great alternate to driving! read more

We were pleased and excited to take the Trolley from Cannery Row to Fisherman's Wharf. Of course, it's a busy time of year - and the Trolley was VERY full - so you might need to stand during your ride. The seats were SOOOO uncomfortable; I don't know that I've ever been that uncomfortable. It hurt to sit on the seats - wooden slats and not contoured well. And . . .on our return trip, we were at the Trolley Stop and when the trolley came, we asked the driver if he was going to Cannery Row. "No." With that a number of people who had just gotten on, got off. (The sign on the trolley said Cannery Row.) We waited for the next trolley - and it got on it. Turns out all the trolleys take the same route - and the first one would have gotten us to Cannery Row after going thru downtown! So . . .signage and drivers were confusing! This a pretty bad bus service for a medium size community with many tourists. Today, I took the bus from downtown to the mall. Driver was a complete sour-puss on my boarding. At my stop, I approached the door to expedite my departure. That is the norm in SF and all other city buses I have encountered. Instead, the driver scolded me for not staying in my seat until the stop. Really rinky-dink operation. Too expensive for its infrequent routes. read more

This is a great way to get around - I only wish they ran more frequently. The drivers are all friendly and take a lot of abuse - from crying children, or those not monitored by their parents, to tourists who pepper them with the same questions time after time after time. They are patient and professional. The trolleys are small so don't be surprised if you have to stand and hold onto the strap and once they are full they will bypass the main stop at Fisherman's wharf. read more

Our recent trip was programmed around riding the trolley from our motel to the Cannery Row area. What we overlooked was it only runs on weekends. So sitting on the bench for about 30 mintues waiting for a 10-15 schedule, making a call to the phone number listed on the sign (no answer to my call), another call to the Monterey city government to see what I had missed (no answer, just rang and rang), and finally called the Monterey Chamber of Commerce which answered right away. A very nice lady helped me with the information that the Free Trolley was only running on weekend this time of year. So, for those tourist that may want to visit during the off season, be advised that the Free Trolley is not available. Since I don't live in Monterey the unanswered calls to the city government and transit authority is none of my concern. For those living in the area you may want to find out who does not take the time to answer their phone. read more

The bus here are oh k and I hate when the bus is not on time when I am in Monterey for school and I do not have a car, this my transportation to get to place.
