I've worked with Inter-West Properties for 30+ years. They have managed multiple homes for me. They have performed professionally for both myself and the tenants they have rented my homes to. If I was to have any complaints it'd be that they bend over backwards & always give the tenants the benefit of the doubt. The tenants who seem to complain the most - have one thing in common - they are people who do not take ownerships for their own actions and the responsibilities they have agreed to as a renting tenant. I have to say that 95%+ of my past & current tenants are wonderful, great people. Many have rented the same home for 10-20 years. I put in an interest for a townhouse in Troutdale and she communicated right back with me. We realized pretty quick that the unit wasn't going to fit my needs and she offered to check her list and see if she had anything else that might work. RUN; don't walk; RUN from INTERWEST! They will never take your safety seriously and will install or approve faulty safety equipment without a second thought. After reporting our concerns over them plastering over a fireplace with a crack in it, I had no choice but to call code enforcement. Their answer? Within 48 hours we received a notice of threat of eviction because we were "noncompliant with management." They also even stated that I was harassing people and cussing them out and yelling at them. I actually have over 20 minutes worth of video at this point where I do absolutely no such thing, but the owner does call me racist just for trying to ensure my family's safety! Now what kind of answer is that!? Who does that!? Who says that someone is racist for trying to make sure they don't die of carbon monoxide poisoning or fire in the middle of the night??? Someone who doesn't have a good answer for all of the illegal things they've been doing. That's who. I see in previous responses to tenants who had issues, the president, Robert, loves to say that everybody should communicate thoroughly. Let me tell you what happens when you "communicate thoroughly". They accuse you of harassing their employees! FoUr emails sent in one afternoon... They tried to rent me & my wife a home without disclosing that in just a few short weeks we would have a homeless camp next door that the entire town had been protesting, we had to find out through neighbors & protestors that this was happening. When confronted with this information they were super unprofessional, refused to take accountability & threatened to sue us for defamation (good luck). It's hard to find a property manager. We interviewed a few and went with Interwest. There was no problem as long as there were no problems with the property. As soon as some attention or work was needed I had difficulty. I wouldn't get calls back, I would get messages that made no sense, emails went unanswered, and the tone of replies, when I did get replies, was snotty and sharp. I ended up doing a lot of work, making calls and emails, arranging repairs, that they should have done. I had a lot of trouble communicating with Bruce, I felt he was the most condescending and resistant to working collaboratively. Steve just didn't respond to me when I asked questions. Samantha was the most helpful in the office. I'm glad the house is selling and we don't need the service anymore. I read the owner comment, wrote a response but then deleted it. Suffice to say that they have their viewpoint, I have mine, we disagree. The owner emailed me privately taking responsibility, going so far as to call a staff member "a grumpy old man." His email and what he posted here are quite different. That's just how we are going to have to leave it. After 6 years and the thousands of dollars I paid them, my experience wasn't great and isn't worth more of my time to explain or defend. read more

Interwest failed at the upkeep on the older home I rented, fixing things in the cheapest ways only to have them break again weeks later. Think free-hanging electrical wires in the basement, sawed off deadbolts to fix our stuck lock, and rat traps left out for over a month. We were made aware of a potential electrical issue with our living room light (super dangerous in an old home) and Interwest failed to follow up over the course of several weeks, finally just advising us to not turn on the light for now. They also "lost" our rent check which we have video of being dropped into the slot, and made it our problem to fix and repay the rent within a matter of days. Not to mention the house cost a fortune to heat (probably the lack of sealing and upkeep on the home lol) and Interwest raised the rent at every chance they could. read more

I've lived in a handful of rentals in Portland in the last five years and this was definitely one of the most frustrating. Our house had a rat problem that they didn't want to handle at first, and when they finally did they had the worst company handle it (who left all their traps in our house and kept lying to us about being there), they're hard to get in contact with, and overall it's just an unreliable business. Our rent check got stolen from their mailbox and it was "our" emergency to fix, they don't respect their tenants, and overall it was such a bad place to live I moved out after 6 months:) read more

The weeds are 5 1/2 feet tall around the building dry grass very scary and I'm concerned for my own safety I've called inner West properties and they refused to do anything they haven't done anything for 2 1/2 years around here at least as far as maintaining the grounds. I've found the folks at InterWest to be a truly rare species: professional, compassionate, and a pleasure to work with. We purchased a rental property that was being managed by them, so we "inherited" them as the rental management company for our new house. From the get-go, they knew it was our intention to move into the house ourselves (thereby ending their services), yet they agreed to continue managing the home for the short but very time-consuming period between our purchase and the end of our tenants' lease (about two months). Coordinating communications between a new owner, the previous owner, and the tenants was no small feat, but they did so efficiently and with great cheer. As a not-so-long-ago renter myself, I especially appreciated their compassion and gentle advocacy for everyone at the table: owners and tenants alike. From Kim and Bob on down, InterWest clearly takes pride in trying to do the right thing by and for their clients. I would work with them again in a flash. read more

I've had a very different experience than the rest of the people here, which is sad, because InterWest is by far the best property management company I've been with since moving to Portland. I've been working in concert with them to try and clean up a property in a...not great neighborhood of town, and they've been 100% supportive and responsive, giving me the power to deal with the things I need to when the office is closed. While helping them with the property, they've helped me by crediting some of my rent. They've installed cameras when I was having difficulties with the neighbors' guests stealing things from our porch and camping in the halls, they've responded in a timely manner to all of my concerns, and while my apartment isn't perfect, all my maintenance requests have been handled swiftly with polite staff, save my very first one, where the maintenance guy didn't listen and broke my Ikea bed frame. Still, the pros far outweigh the cons for me working with InterWest. I never have any delusions I'm going to get 100% of my deposit back since I have a service dog and two cats, but I also know that there are always things that need to be fixed after a person goes, and some of that will come out of a deposit even in a pristine home. Like post offices, cable companies and cell phone providers, it's hard to please everyone and it's harder to overcome people who have bad experiences with good; we often forget to mention when we had a good experience and leave a review of these kinds of companies saying so. I'll reiterate--nothing at InterWest has been perfect, and my neighbors are a nightmare, but the company and its employees have been honest and open with me through the time I've lived here, and I will be a bit sad when I go. read more

They make it so difficult to pay rent! They are really only interested in automatic online payments, and will intentionally f*** with you if you try to pay any other way. If you pay with check, money order etc. be prepared to be CONSTANTLY told "We didn't get it. Oh, you have tracking...Um you must have the number wrong. We didn't get it!" If you look at tracking, almost monthly you will find that while delivery was tried multiple times, during office hours, somehow they were just never there. read more

this has been such a terrible experience. we moved into a property that was a good deal, which meant we knew there were going to be things wrong with it... we have tons of dry rot that they have no desire to address, we have ants that they wont take care of, a drain that doesnt stay plugged and many other issues. some of which, thankfully they have addressed. maintenance is impossible to get a hold of and when we do they arent friendly... we have had the guilt trip played on us more than once.. we had a sick dog and 2 sick young children, plus a broken gutter which was letting water in our house. so we though MOLD. had a mold test and they found and had to replace a small area.. but maintenance told us what we were costing the owner and how it was all so minuscule. I wrote to the top, and he had been receiving all the emails also and didnt seem to think anything of it... they are so rude and unprofessional. probably been the worst experience. no one is friendly if you can even get a hold of someone.. i would never work with them, or rent from them again... read more

We hired Interwest Properties about five years ago to manage a rental home that we own. When we hired them, we were told they would inspect the inside of the property every six months. We were lucky if they came every two years to inspect the inside of the house. When they did come and inspect the inside of the house, an Interwest employee would always check off that the furnace was fine, when, in fact, it was leaking water and there was obviously rust on the furnace. We only found out about this when we had to replace the air conditioner and the technician looked at the furnace and told us about it. We had to replace the furnace, partly because of its age and partly because it had rusted away and we had not been told about this by Interwest Properties. About the only thing Interwest did on a regular basis was a "curbside inspection", which was not cheap. Also, the roof on the house and garage have moss that grows on it and I always had to ask Interwest to treat the moss. They never noticed it during the curbside inspections that they did. We have decided to manage the property ourselves, which we never wanted to do, but we can no longer trust Interwest to look after our investment. The ladies who work in the office were always very nice and helpful, but overall not a good company at all. P.S. This is in response to Bobby's response to my review. Interwest Properties charged us $191.00 for the terrible job of trimming our trees, which we did not ask them to do. I was a tenant for over 3 years when interwest properties started managing my apartment complex. I've had shady landlords before but this above and beyond. Everything in this review is 100 percent true. i am a disabled young woman in university studying to become a therapist and I know discrimination and mocking when I see it and expierence it. These people led me to believe that I would get my security deposit for almost a month and then when it's due they try to say they applied it to my masts months rent. the last month I was there I had to evacuate the apartment because it was uninhabitable, there was no hot or running water, there was no heat and they left me in a snowstorm unable to get help from my family due to the conditions or form anyone else. they couldn't even take the time to answer the phone about this... 3 people died from freezing to death in February less than 5 miles away and they think it's not serious. They mocked me when I asked for a reaosinable accomadation because during the evacuation I injured my leg that was healing from surgery. I have a photo of my kneecap double in size thanks to this company. they are making it an extreme hardship for me To move. First I was planning on moving because I saw many red flags with this companies management and they we're doing nothing about a tenant who was harassing me everyday. This was my home of three years and although it was an apartment I treated It like my home. they wrote false claims that I abanonded my property and are trying to charge me by the day for keeping it there when they have locked me out of the unit and claim I have no rights due to no longer being a tenant. It is actually the complete opposite. I have all the rights because of the circumstances, they refused to acknowledge my disability but instead mocked me and wrote in air quotes "reasonable accomadation" when they told me 2 days after saying they were mailing my deposit that instead I actually owe them 27 dollars. They are illegally applying my deposit towards last months rent which cannot be done. I spent around 3000 dollars to move In and they don't care at all. They don't have any compassion for the fact that I had to leave or would of died. I have no help I would of froze to death. I think this company is evil and if they manage your living situation please report them. It needs to be known what they have done. The woman who work in the office are two larger women who are very rude and have no empathy. they know that this deposit being withhekd from me will cause me to be forced out of unviereity and be poor forever. they don't care at all about disabled rights. I would live in my car before I ever rented from Interwest again. It was impossible to get any maintenance done. Called once because my fridge and A.C were both not working and someone showed up 10 minutes late to rekey my locks....what?? Needless to say we had to live without a fridge for 5 days before we got a replacement and NEVER got the a.c fixed. Called maintenance 3 times and all 3 times he sent someone over to do something completely different than what I called for and of they did "fix it" it wasn't fixed properly. Open the bathroom cupboard and it fell off its hinge because it was GLUED on it... Why not use screws interwest??Roof leaked ....never fixed. Furnace didn't work....never fixed. I would recommend not even looking at a property thru interwest because they are the WORST property management company. Had to give one star cause it won't let me give zero. read more

WARNING: DO NOT RENT FROM THIS PROPERTY MANAGEMENT COMPANY AND IF I WERE YOU I WOULD NOT USE THEM TO "TAKE CARE" of your property! We rented from this company for two years and it was honestly one of the most awful experiences I have ever had. They are EXTREMELY unprofessional and clearly lack a proper protocol. When we moved in we were given a unit with issues such as tack strips showing, blatant holes in the walls never covered up from previous tenants, and various outdoor items left on the back patio as well as a BROKEN dryer that they never told us about! So did they let the owner of the property know that they were renting the unit out with multiple things wrong? The washer and dryer broke four different times throughout our stay there and nearly all of their maintenance work is outsourced so it always took over a week to get fixed! On top of that they would fix something poorly and would have to call again and wait again to have someone come do the same thing! A real inconvenience and they could not have cared less. On top of that for all maintenance re quests we had CLEAR instructions that no one is to enter the unit without our permission first and someone being there to see the person in our place....I came home early one day with my child to find that someone from interwest had let themselves in WITHOUT calling me or my husband to ask if they could or even to let us know they had received the electronic maintenance request! This company is beyond unprofessional and was by far the worst rental experience myself or my husband have ever had. If I were a property owner looking for a prop. management company I would NEVER use them and I would NEVER rent a property from them again!! They do not even schedule to have someone do a walkthrough with you at the end of the lease and did not even ask for my forwarding address until I emailed them, after they requested I leave the unit unlocked and keys on the counter...so lazy! Being a returning resident of 12-15 years and not having to go through hoops and stress on trying to find the right home for me and my children. This is my second time renting a home from Interwest. I couldn't be a happier tenant. Both times I moved into clean, well maintained homes. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. Scheduled maintenance is always on time, I receive proper notification for everything and reminders via email for any visits or payment. It's never been an issue getting permission to personalize my space with paint or fixtures. I've had nothing but pleasant and reasonable interactions with Interwest Properties, from the application process to the end of a rental agreement. They take care of their properties and their tenants, that's a rare combination. I won't rent from another company. read more

Online payments are nice. But don't even bother cleaning the place upon move out. They will still charge for their vendor to go out and "clean". Scrubbed the walls just like they asked to on the move out list. Still got charged. Left trash can at curb with a few things the garbage truck could easily pick up. Got charged $75. Batteries and most of the lightbulbs in the house died a month into the lease because they were replaced with the cheapest possible. i lived at 11714 e burnside under interwest prop. management. i moved into a nightmare. they left a brand new door uninstalled sitting in my basement. meanwhile the front door had a hole the size of a battle ram in it. the flooring was roted and had holes in it. the electrical wiring was so bad that it electacuted me and burnt my surge protector and left melted plastic on the heater. the heating in front room didnt work properly and made clicking noises all year round. the maintenance employees would come in say theyd be back to fix things and didnt. they even went so far as to break things themselves. the last straw for me was a 2x14 inch crack in the living room wall that made it more then obvious that the building has severe foundation problems. you can hear the walls creak as they shift. there is mold in the ceilings and the flooring in the basement has a spot that shows and proves that the cement under the building is broken and coming up. my name is clarissa vega 5037024235 read more

11/10/2013 I had a very bad experience with Interwest Property in Portland. Anybody should have done some homework before signing contract with them, because it would be too late to realize that you are another victim, just like I felt I did. Here is the outrageous story: They only sign the management contract if I agree to pay them ahead of time for doing some minor repairs and cleaning. Bruce is the one who did the talking, signing paper and promising. After they received $1,700 from me, I experienced every detail of what happened exactly the same as Rebecca H. had written in the Reviews on 8/1/2013 about trying to contact them( I wish I should have read her review a head of time- but I did not have a chance) They charged me nearly $1,300 totally with their undone repair and cleaning- which were poorly done about 25% of what promised. When I requested a check-up list, they denied. Bruce said he will charge me $42 per hour for seeing him in person!. The next thing, they terminated the contract with me. Then they sent me a ridiculous letter filled with insulting, bullying and humiliating me with many untruthful and imaginative details such as, "sexual harassment" their staffs, asking their manager many times to marry me, asking for dinner out with another staff...etc. They went so far out of line, just trying hard to battle me up! LOL, how could I have all energy and time do all of that? Only I wish! #1/ I am an easily crumpling 62 years old , carrying a chronic heart disease, no more energy for all that funny stuffs. #2/ My difficulty contact with them as much exactly as Rebecca H. saying in her Reviews. #3/ my sweating money $1,700 was paid already- to mess up with them, they might get away with all! Finally, what I got : #1/ their promising job was undone, I lost 14 precious days #2/ I was unfairly charged a lot because the money already in their hand, what can I do! #3/ Possibly I lost another $1,650 from November rent due to time lost, #4/ I should do all repairs by myself -after losing a nearly $3,000. #5/ I received a reward from them, a bullying letter! #6/ Not done, at the end of this letter, they threatened me that they would "instruct an attorney immediately" if I respond their dirty letter- Their letter has made me feel so sorry for them: they had to spend time, energy and used up their professional quality to write it, only for battling against an old poor woman to gain such little money from her that supposed to pay her medical bills. Why didn't they just ask me give them as a gift? After reading it, I decided to respond them right away. I am humble and "honored" to accept them to "INSTRUCT AN ATTORNEY IMMEDIATELY" as they had claimed in the letter. LOL! They were recommended to me to manage my property while I was out of the country- and I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to be stress-free and hands-off for property management. They took care of everything to the highest level of service and were extremely helpful with all my questions. All house-related issues were resolved quickly with their reliable service staff and outside contractors. They were always very responsive. I am very disappointed with this company. The leasing agent pretty much told me it was my responsibility to let her know I was first in line to view the apartment I was interested in. Even though she saw me waiting for her on the steps when she pulled up, and iI gave her a call 45 minutes before she showed up to let her know I was there already. She let another applicant that arrived at the property 30 minutes after me be the first in line. And because of her failure to pay attention to details, I am now back at square one. Allow me to begin with saying I've never found it worth my time to go out of my way to post a negative review about a business before now. In short, I've rented with interwest for a year. There was an issue with an online rent payment, where I was unaware that it had not processed. They called me the next business day, inquiring about our rent payment, we identified that the payment had not gone through. All in all, what looked what first looked like a simple mistake bloomed into an unfortunate fiasco. I was continually differed to an assistant, avoided, and when I finally got so fed up that I left a message informing them that I would reach out to the BBB, Robert "Bobby" Johnson, the VP of the company returned my call. Robert insisted was it was a 'user error,' offered zero transparency in how they determined this or the possibility of issues with payment, citing "their technical team looked into it." Despite conceding to the point that they wouldn't be able to tell if a payment was initiated, but not completed, he adopted an increasingly condescending tone that implied I didn't know how to use the internet (mind you, I'm a twenty something with a tech-oriented job). He threw statistics at me ("44% of renters use the online service, and no one has an issue but you") and later reminded me that "contracts don't have feelings that I could change when I liked." Finally, he implied that this entire situation had some issue with my personal finances ("you can't adjust the terms of the contract if you can't afford it"). This patronizing tone carried into his reply on my BBB complaint accusing me of being 'retaliatory' and 'bullying.' All this over 140$. I'm lucky enough to say that I can handle losing 140$, which isn't the case for some of the folks that rent from them in less-fortunate circumstances. However, what I cannot abide is the childishness, evasiveness, and overall entirely unprofessional attitude of this company's Vice President displayed both in my original interactions around the rent payment and their disappointingly vindictive response to my BBB complaint (which is a free space for consumers to air grievances). Although I hadn't had much in the way of issues prior to this unfortunate experience, it is enough for me to seek a different property management company. If this is how this business treats its loyal renters, I'd be extremely apprehensive to see how they'd respond if I truly needed their help. I've recently walked by Glenwood and checked out the apartment which I usually would do before I rent. Seeing is believing. The dumpster located right at the entrance was overflown unattended. Cars which parked in the covered parking were beaten up as if it was a junk yard. If people bad mouth about SE Powell as a rat hole, here is the reason. ***Since writing the review below I have talked with two people from management who have been very responsive and have resolved these matters efficiently and successfully. I'm glad Interwest was able to right this situation, acknowledge missteps on their part along the way, and show a much higher level of customer service.*** I lived in a great property managed by Interwest for ten years. They were pretty good while I was living there in terms of repairs and responsiveness. However, upon my move out, getting my deposit back has been a nightmare. I was an excellent tenet, treated the property as if it were my own, added flower beds, and left the property very clean. I have filed two written disputes with them citing why their final accounting doesn't make sense, with detail and copies of documents, only to receive the same form letter back twice. The letter is not even coherent. The lack of customer service, but also plain common sense, is mind boggling in this situation. It is a very disappointing way to end my dealings with Interwest in this way, and I would urge prospective tenets and owners to think twice before choosing them. Definitely don't bother cleaning on your way out because we did for hours and still got charged for a 'full clean'. read more

Ripped me off on the deposit. Charged me 500 for landscaping drove by my old house landscaping looks the same. Also charged me 450 for cleaning. I cleaned that house for 3 days before moving out in my 11 years of renting I've got all my deposit back in full except interewest. What can you expect from a huge rental company. Ill never rent from them again. P.s... the house also didn't have screens. Didn't expect to have to look at house for things like screens. Moved in the house in the heat of the summer so tons of bugs were flying in, it sucked. Also could not hook up our washing machine, because they didn't have the plumbing done...that was a 3 week deal of going to laundry matts... Oh and I almost forgot our 1 st month in the house the fridge was leaking water all over the floor. Was really fun dumping out bowls of water all month because the repair man was waiting on the ok to get a new fridge.. 1 more thing they say 500 for landscaping b.s.. found out after I moved in while cleaning up the back yard that the previous people grew marijuana how did I find out cause I had to spend hour or two after work cleaning up all the weed stocks and soil that they dumped around the whole house. So my dog wouldn't eat it P.s.s... had inspection done on our house the maintance guy went through all my cub boards, opened the fridge. Really weird,, privacy was violated. Then he tells me I need to move wood that was stacked up before we moved in. I was like wow I'm fixing things that should have been done before I moved in.. and all I did was clean their old house and pay rent on time every month.. thanks for only paying me back 880 on my 1850 deposit. I got your 6 page clean up deal did all the stuff it said oh and the maintance guy that looked at the house when I moved out said it was one of the best move outs he has ever seen. And that I would be getting my full deposit back. But I guess after talking to a cranky office lady,, (maintance guys are not in charge of that we have a month to look over the house) lol rip off,,,they rent old crappy houses. Think twice before you rent from interwest. Not only can you never get a hold of anybody in the office but even when you leave a message it takes them forever to get back to you if they even do get back to you. We lived in a two bedroom one bath house that only source of heat was two cadet heaters both of which were in the living room. When we requested that we at least get one installed in the bedroom they sent an electrician out (in October) and when we moved out in April there was still no heat. We also had our fence ran into by a wreck less driver in November and it took them until March to get someone to do anything about it and it was the fence our mail boxes were on. Now that we moved out we noticed we got charged an $800 landscaping fee which is ridiculous because when we moved in there was corn husks broken pots and torn up lumber all over the yard that they didn't want to deal with so before we could let our dogs out back we had to dig out a bunch of rotting plants and pick up all the broken boards and nails and garbage that was strung everywhere. These people have no respect for their tenants and I hope you reconsider renting through them. read more

Don't ever rent with INTERWEST PROPERTIES, they send u fake outrageous water bills and make up charges when you move out, estimated water bills that can't be disputed. Specific duplex @ 2622 se 84th, say away from INTERWEST PROPERTIES @ all cost!! 1 bedroom 2 bath 750 sq ft. Duplex $470 average water bill, CHARGED AS A SINGLE FAMILY HOUSEHOLD, paying for storm water, rainwater, sewage, even though 3 neighboring tenants share the same space. FINAL ACCOUNT BILL AS FINE PRINT THAT STATES OWNER DOES NOT WAIVE THE RIGHT TO BILL YOU ADDITIONAL FEES AFTER YOU PAY THE FINAL ACCOUNT BILL THEY SEND YOU 30 days after u move out. Now if that was the final bill with all the things they are charging u for, what additional fees can they later fabricate. Final account bill already include estimated/prorated water(higher than someone with 4 baths in the Portland area), but they reserve the right to send u collections. FAke cleaning charges, and no matter if u patched up the holes in the walls, they will recharge you for that too. Stay AWAY FROM INTEREEST PROPERTIES, I will post this everywhere I can. read more

I recently moved out of a house managed by InterWest that I rented for nearly 3 years. During that time, I had mixed experiences with the office. Sometimes, they were prompt responsive to issues. At other times, it took weeks or longer to resolve things. After a storm, there was a huge part of a tree that had splintered and a big branch came down, resting on the back porch and covering part of the yard. I took 2 months and multiple calls to get it taken care of. My final call mentioned that I considered it a safety hazard, which got them moving. When I recently moved out, I was sent a cleaning list. Me and a handful of friends cleaned for hours and had the house in the same shape I found it. Windows, floors, cupboards, sinks.. all scrubbed clean. The basement was a bit dusty, but it's a wet, mildewy basement. It was as clean as I found it. When I received my deposit, I found I'd been charged $250 for cleaning. As well, I was charged for extra yard debris that I'd put out after making sure the yard was cleaned up. There are big trees on the property and I wanted to leave it as I would want to find it. I challenged these charges. I could see that perhaps the walls in the kitchen needed some extra cleaning, but to be charged for a full-house clean felt like completely wrong. I was sent a letter in response to my request for review. I was told the committee had reviewed things and that the decision stood. Included was a receipt from the cleaning person who reported finding animal hair and dust throughout the house. There was also a receipt from the trash company showing the extra yard debris charges, with a marker noting "MOVING". I had never before been charged for the extra yard debris that it took to keep the property cleaned up. I feel totally scammed out of nearly $300. I cannot in good conscience recommend this company. read more
