I cannot recommend this dental practice. My first visit was a cleaning, and everything was fine until Dr. Kearns came back and told me I had three cavities. This was surprising to me as I have been receiving dental care every 6 months for my whole life and haven't had a cavity in 10+ years. My prior dentist was in my hometown and someone I had been going to since childhood and was very familiar with my teeth. Because we had a good relationship with this dentist, my mom even asked them what they thought and they warned that I should get a second opinion. However, I was scared of having cavities, so went ahead with the fillings on Dr. Kearns recommendation ($400+ out of pocket for a college student). I was also told to buy an expensive specialty toothpaste in the office that retailed for half the price on Amazon. Over the next several months, I had horrific, constant dental pain where the fillings were. I couldn't eat anything on one side of my mouth for months. After about two weeks of pain, I went in for a revision, which did not help. Only now 6 months later I am starting to be able to eat on the other side of my mouth. I should note that I had no dental pain in this region before despite the diagnosis of three cavities. I should have switched after this, but had scheduled a 6 month cleaning immediately after my first appointment which crept up on me, so decided to just go in and do the cleaning. When I arrived, the front desk told me I had a balance of $170 that they were about to send to collections. I had not received a single text, email, or physical mail notifying me of my balance. I was able to pay this balance, but knowing that they were happy to send this to collections and potentially impact my credit score without any notification is a disgrace. The cleaning itself was fine, but my hygienist told me Dr. Kearns was very busy and when she came to check me out she barely spoke a word to me, only rattling off dental jargon to the hygienist. I will not be returning to Intown Dental Center. I have never had anxiety related to the dentist until now. The poor bedside manner, weaponization of authority to overprescribe procedures/sell you things you don't need, shoddy fillings, and lack of billing transparency all made this a horrible experience. read more

Horrible front office!!! Called 3x to schedule an appointment answered and then they hung up. Put me on hold 2x and I waited. When they answered and I said hello....they hung up. This happened multiple times in a matter of minutes. Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere. Get a front office that isn't belligerent and is actually trying to get patients!!! I was so excited to go to this dentist as they seemed very professional and knowledgeable. It turns out they are completely unethical and overcharged me by mis-coding procedures to a total of over $950.00. I live paycheck to paycheck like many of us in this society and have been fighting for 3 months to get my refund, which they have already confirmed I'm entitled to in the amount of over $750.00. Dr Kearns has not responded to 5 email attempts to resolve the matter which is unprofessional and truly just disrespectful. On top of the monetary distress, I have never had a worse experience with a dentist in my life. I have white coat fear (particularly dentists) like many patients and this exacerbated every part of that. I was in so much pain I had to return to the office every week or other week to try to figure out what was happening and get it resolved so that I could eat, drink water, or sleep to no avail. I used every sick day and vacation day trying to get this resolved. It was absolutely nightmarish. I eventually went to another dentist (Dental Esthetics, highly recommend, tell them I sent you) and I was in the chair for 5 mins and with ONE xray (Dr Kearns' team did like 30 in this time frame and could find nothing) they figured out exactly what the issue was and how to fix it. Dr, Janet Kearns and her entire ALL FEMALE STAFF are beyond imaging FANTASTIC. Calm, extremely knowledgeable, efficient, compassionate, friendly and very current in their practices. Dentistry has changed A LOT since I was a kid. THANK GOD. Nothing stuffy here. I recently had to face one of my worst nightmares. Losing my two front teeth (from extremely bad braces from the 1970s - my roots were dangerously short). But Kearns and her staff made we feel incredibly safe - and dare I saw - made it all seem easy. We had such a horrific experience with Dr. Kearns' office that I don't even know where to begin. All I want to say is please reconsider going elsewhere. I took my baby sister here to get her braces done and she came out of their office in tears one day. And that was the last day I was going to put her through it. I wished I would have done much more research before selecting Dr. Kearns to work on her. After switching to a professional orthodontist, my sister is in much better shape. The new orthodontist cut off the wires that were stabbing the back of her mouth - to which Dr. Kearns said she cannot cut it any shorter. It took the new orthodontist less than a minute to snip the wires! Dr. Kearns clearly is under qualified to do orthodontics work and so are her staffs. I have so much more than I can say about this horrible office, but I will not leave a long spill because my main objective here is for potential clients to read this review. VERY negative experience! Believe all the 1 Star reviews that mention all the following and then some: - all they care about is money (even though you have insurance??). I went to Dr. Kearns after my most recent dentist decided to move into pro bono work. Her office was nice, the staff was professional and helpful. They were very eager to understand my insurance and helped verify my coverage. Dr. Kearns was pleasant and responsive. I left the office with $1000 treatment plan. 5 fillings were recommended - 2 of which I was told were cavities. My last dentist basically sent me away with a clean bill of dental health but we were watching some gum recession that is normal for my age. My typical experience with the dentist is that they clean my teeth and I leave with no further follow up except to plan my next cleaning. Based on the very different diagnosis from Dr Kearns, I went to a 3rd dentist who was my dentist previously and I left him based on location. He runs a very successful practice in Brookhaven. His assessment was that he would not recommend any of the work that Dr. Kearns recommended. So two dentists gave me clean bills of dental health and Dr. Kearns recommended five fillings. I corresponded with Dr. Kearns about this and she said that she respectfully disagreed with the other assessments, she sent me my pictures and said she takes a very proactive approach to dentistry so that issues don't progress. She was very responsive to my concerns. However, I prefer a more conservative approach to dentistry where drilling on my teeth is done only when absolutely necessary, so for me this practice was not a good fit. read more

I moved to Atlanta in July and went to Intown for a routine cleaning because they took my fiance's insurance. The dentist told me that I had a progressive infection in my gums that required a "deep cleaning" (an extra few hundred dollars) and four cavities (several hundred more dollars). I asked them to check again, because I couldn't afford that at all, and I'd never had problems like that with my teeth before, but they just repeated themselves and kept trying to get me to finance my dental care through them. They continued to say that I had to accept their treatment plan or else my teeth were going to get worse and, embarrassed because I had to keep repeating that I simply couldn't afford it, I left in tears. I went back to visit my family the next month and scheduled an appointment with my regular dentist. He saw absolutely NO EVIDENCE of the gum disease they had INSISTED that I had, and found only one small cavity that he took care of in twenty minutes. Reading other reviews, I see that I'm not the only one they've tried to take advantage of by insisting on unnecessary procedures. I only wish I had looked at the reviews before I made my appointment. I found Intown Dental Center while walking through the Edgewood Shopping Center the other night. My daughters and I noticed a sign, looked up, and there it was! I had to ask when they'd arrived, since I'm in that Shopping Center almost daily and never noticed. November 2011. Probably because I'm focused on getting to Willy's when I'm over there. Anyway... I'm not a fan of The Dentist. A dental appointment ranks pretty high among my lifelong fears. Neurotically so. I've always avoided going for as long as possible as an adult, but for my daughters, as is the case with my other phobias, I try to present and create something different for them. When I called, I learned that Dr. Kearns' office has SATURDAY HOURS, which, for a working mom, makes the Holy Grail sound effect go off in my head. So weird about Atlanta, pediatricians and the like have banker's hours (read:super inconvenient). I was able to get my daughters in this morning, and I have to say I was impressed. everything was clean, modern, paperless (appeals to my inner tree hugger) and even calling in and scheduling the appointment was pleasant, informative and efficient. Dr. Kearns (Emory & NYU graduate) thoroughly explained everything - with large, onscreen photos that would normally terrorize me, but because she was so calm, and my daughters didn't have anything scary going on, it all seemed okay. She showed me their actual x-rays on a very cool touch screen. It was very hard for me to resist touching and messing with everything. The treatment areas are open, with bright, sunny windows. You'd have to know me to understand how monumental it is that I actually LOVED a dentist's office, but you should trust me. It's huge. They got us in and out on a beautiful Saturday morning, freeing us up for the rest of the day's adventures. My daughters (10 & 11) loved Dr. Kearns and said her tech reminded them of someone from The Cheetah Girls movie. (I can't confirm that, but he was very polite and had a great smile.) I also loved how they explained everything to my daughters, and not just to me. I may even schedule an appointment for myself. Fearlessly! read more

I was previously a patient at this dentist. I ended up getting about 6 fillings and was told I needed more than 10. After having the fillings I felt great sensitivity. I now go to a different dentist who told me I didn't need those fillings I received in the first place. My new dentist was disappointed by the fact that I'd received services from Intown that was unnecessary. My new dentist has also done one filling since I've been there and I've experienced no sensitivity. I wanted to make sure that I encouraged folks to please find another dentist office. Dr. Kearns seems to be a very nice woman and the staff was pretty friendly. But friendliness and courtesy doesn't mean a lot when the services provided are less than satisfactory. I do hope that if things have changed others will state so but I chose her as a dentist based on reviews. I felt it necessary to provide my feedback. read more

My wife and I were patients here for more than two years, but now we will be looking for another dentist. We always had great service from Dr. Kearns and the technicians who worked on us, but I just couldn't deal with their insurance policies any more. After a negative experience after my first visit, the front office and I established a plan for their verifying coverage in advance of services. That worked well until recently, when Dr. Kearns' staff refused to relent on a charge that was not covered by my plan, something they found very unusual. They claimed that this practice of verifying coverage in advance of services--to which they agreed at the beginning of my care--would be completely unfeasible for their staff. So, after several calls, I had to decide that I would not be able to use them any more. While they offer great dental care, please make sure you're VERY clear with them about insurance and payment issues in advance of receiving services. read more

I liked Dr. Kearn's office as soon as I walked in. There's no TV in the waiting room. I was greeted by soothing music, Asian inspired art on the walls and a very nice receptionist. The office has a lot of natural light, and feels very comfortable. They have a paperless check-in and Saturday morning hours. It's obvious that the office has the latest in dental equipment, including digital ex-rays that are done in the same room as your cleaning and exam, so there's no shuffling you around from room to room. My first visit to the dentist in a few years had me a little concerned. Dr. K's offices were new and well-equipped. The intake was paperless and organized. The staff courteous, knowledgeable and quick. She outlined a treatment plan for me and helped me prioritize the things that were most important. She is the first dentist I have been to in a while were I didnt feel like I had been upsold the entire time. She personally performed the services and they were done very professionally. I hate the dentist, and this was my first visit in a long time. Everything was clean and modern, with up-to-date equipment. They are paperless. Unlike other dentist visits, I didn't have to wait 30 min - 1hr after my appointment time to see anyone! I was brought back once all my new patient forms were complete online. The technicians, receptionists, and Dr Kearns were wonderful. They were friendly and made sure you were aware of what they were going to do, why they were doing it, and how much it would hurt your pocket before they even touched you teeth. I have used this dentist since switching from Modern Dental (faulty equipment resulted in my mouth getting burned and blistered). I would say that Dr Kearns is a proactive dentist and will work with you to get your mouth in the best shape possible. Some patients may like a dentist who is more reactive in nature (read: cheaper), however I prefer the former and Dr Kearns office has been a wonderful fit for me. In addition, the staff at the front desk as as well as the dental techs have all been professional and usually remember me (for better or for worse. muhahaha) I would totally recommend checking out this office. read more

I hate dentists. Let's be honest here. So much so that I haven't done a very good job of being a Responsible Adult and actually bothering to go to one. Finally, I noticed some staining on my teeth and decided to suck it up and get my cleaning done. Dr. K's office is clean, modern and the front desk staff is very helpful! Intake is paperless, and I had no wait coming in. Then they sat me down and went over everything my insurance covered, exactly what everything cost, let me know that I could waive treatment if I wanted, and let me know about what would happen if I chose to do that. They then took me back to a sunny, open room with a television. My hygienist was awesome - super friendly, quick, and understanding of my apprehension. After the X-rays and cleaning (no cavities), they gave me a quote on follow-up care and discussed the necessity of it. This is easily the best dental experience I've had in YEARS! I had been a patient here for several years before finally (I have no idea why it took me so long) having enough of Dr. Kearns' incessant attempts to sell me dental procedures I neither wanted nor needed. In all seriousness, every time I left their office I felt like I had been pressured to buy some expensive procedure, many of which were for nothing more than cosmetic improvements. I have confirmed with my new (and honest!) dentist that even those procedures that were ostensibly for the good of my dental health (and not just my appearance) were not necessary or urgent whatsoever. And when I decided to get a new dentist and have Intown give me my dental records, I am told that there is a $30 "administrative fee" for them to release MY records to ME. Seriously?! This place is the used car lot of dentist offices -- how can we get as much money as possible out of this poor joker that just walked through our doors? Go find a real dentist. read more

I've been visiting Intown Dental for years now and I always have a great experience. Outside of my regular cleaning appointments, I also requested to have all my 20+ year old metal fillings replaced a few years back and Dr. Kearns delivered exactly that for me. I've never felt like I was being overcharged, and for my cleanings, my insurance covers all but the $17 optional fluoride treatment. Everyone is friendly from the front desk to to the technicians to Dr. Kearns herself, and my appointments always take place on time. read more

This was my first visit. The office was nice, the staff was professional and helpful Initially. The X Wray was a bit excruciating. I was scheduled for a basic cleaning (which would be free under my dental policy "preventive care"). I was told i had gum disease and i needed a deep cleaning instead. I also would have to make another appointment to get the other half teeth "Deep Cleaned". I was not aware of the substantial Price Increase. I can honestly say i felt pressured in getting this procedure done, a very uneasy feeling. At the checkout desk i was hit with a $350 Bill for "Deep cleaning" half my teeth. I was also given a "special" mouthwash that cost $30. The staff that were all smiles in the beginning became very Rude and Obnoxious. I paid the $380 and called it a lost. I never returned or had the other half of my teeth "Deep Cleaned" . 6 months later i visited North Georgia Orthodontics for a basic cleaning. Went in for an exam and basic cleaning and walked out without doing anything but the exam, and deeply regetting having done that much. First Red Flag: In discussion with the receptionist about the different procedures that would happen during the exam, I was told "the Dr will decide if you get the basic cleaning or the deep cleaning. You don't choose." I thought that was a strange thing to say since there was a significant cost difference between the two and it also dismissed patient preferences out-of-hand... Red Flag two: I will admit I didn't speak up on this one, and should have, but during the exam they used clamps (mouth holder opener thingys) that seemed to have been sitting out. I wasn't sure and said nothing cause I thought there is no way... but some had covering and others didnt and they were all on a tray. I got super nervous but said nothing so this one is on me. Red Flag three: The Dr was completely unconvincing when discussing her findings from the X-rays and pictures. Any question I asked was met with resistance or dismissal. For example she said I had a potential cavity forming and it was indicated by Grey on the x-ray, when I asked her to point out the grey she was seeing, she couldn't point to anything that matched her talk track. I was left with the very strong sense that I was being suckered and sold a bill of goods. I decided that I didn't trust anything coming out of that office and I needed to take my insurance to a more trust worthy source. When I tried to get my x-rays and pictures (which were paid for) I was told I needed to pay them $30 to make a copy. Needless to say I highly recommend you avoid this office like you would a visit to a bad dentists (which this is). *DO NOT USE THIS PRACTICE* My mom is a dental hygienist and I've had a lot of dentists in my experience (moved around a lot) and this was the worst experience I've had with a dentist. I elected to use this dentist because it was very close to my house and in summary my complaints are mostly centered around how the practice is ran by Dr. Kearns. The staff is nice and efficient in scheduling patients, facilities are good and located in a convenient area, but Dr. Kearns is more interested in selling than the care of her patients. During my first visit (a routine cleaning) it took 1.5 hours till someone actually even begun cleaning my teeth. They tried to sell me on multiple procedures before they even cleaned my teeth. They ended up selling me on a deep gum cleaning which I trusted their word on and found out later two horribly surprising facts: 1) it turns out I didn't need that procedure according to two others dentists and 2) it zapped up my dental insurance (which really hurt me later...read the next serious complaint I have....) I was also talked into replacing a filling with a new one, which might have been necessary. They did a really rough job numbing me up. The jaw muscles were achy for days from the injections (which I could feel so the novocaine beforehand wasn't properly applied). Then the next day I let them know I had serious sensitivity to hot and cold so they brought me back in and Dr. Kearns thought it was just a contact pain and they needed to form the filling a little better to my tooth (why not do that properly the first time???). A few days later I let them know it was still bothering me and I believed I needed a root canal. They brought me back in and did the exact same thing and comforted me in saying I didn't need a root canal. Well it didn't work so i started doing research and realized the tooth was probably infected and needed a root canal. I called them up and they told me to find an Endodontist......NO HELP IN FINDING ONE FOR ME. No sense of urgency, no sense of care, and they obviously didn't hear me when I proposed that was the issue the first couple times. Well I certainly did need a root canal. The Endodontist thought it was fairly obvious and couldn't believe it. The majority of my insurance had been used on the unnecessary gum cleaning so i had to pay mostly out of pocket for this very expensive procedure. Dr. Kearns showed little care, skill in her practice, or empathy for her patients. Thanks for the root canal and zapping my insurance. On the bright side I have since found an awesome dentist who I trust and shows a lot of care towards their patients. Avoid this practice please. read more

I've been going to Intown for 18 months The receptionist, hygienist, and tech are very nice and personable. I've rarely waited to wait more than 5 minutes past my appointment time. Scheduling is very easy, the clinic is very nice and new. Great location too. Dr Kearns is very knowledgeable and is very good at explaining what's going on... if you ask for an explanation. She has an overly-provocative approach (in other words, recommend the most complex solution) for issues, which I didn't like because I prefer dentists who don't take drilling in my mouth lightly. The new dentist is what's driving most of this negative review. He came to see me in Dr Kearns' absence and treated me and talked about me as if I'm invisible or as if I'm dumb. I was really frustrated when he rolled up, said a very short hello and jumped in my mouth without asking questions and even ignoring what the hygienist briefing. He spoke almost only to the hygienist during his very rushed inspection. Used technical terms and got flippant with me when I asked him for explanation. Recommending 3 or more crowns isn't something that I'm ok with being thrown out casually without sufficient discussion. read more

I was not notified of this until I came in. He did not introduce himself to me, and only spoke to the hygienist other than to tell me when to open/close my mouth. Had a cleaning this week. Got into a room a soon as i showed up (this was awesome since one of my pet-peeves is showing up on time and having to wait). Cleaning went well, except for an a cavity that showed up on my x-rays. Dr. Kearn was able to squeeze in a filling for me between her next appt.... which was a lot better than having to come back for a follow-up appointment. I used Intown Dental for about 2 years before moving to San Diego, and a bad experience at a new provider really helped shine a light at how great this practice is! And it prompted me to write a review. Appointment scheduling at Intown Dental Center was always a breeze. The location has great parking. The interior amenities, decor and dental equipment are all top notch, modern & "cute" (I recall them having rooms named after Atlanta neighborhoods). The hygenist I had (can't remember) was extremely thorough and built a great rapport/relationship with me. It was fun to go get cleanings. Once I had a weird scare where my lip puffed up after eating a lemon (some sort of blockage) and I left a VM with the non-business hours phone number. Within minutes, Dr. Kearns called me back. Based on the background noise it was very clear she was at a party on a Saturday night, but she was very patient and thorugh with me over the phone and scheduled me in to come Mon morning for a checkup. Whatever the issue was it passed on its own, but she did a comprehensive exam. The only "knock" on the practice that I'd agree with that others have said is that the office is more "pro-active" and may recommend things other dentists would not. However, they were never pushy about it to me (past dentists in comparison were much pushier). I am hoping to find a practice that lives up to Intown Dental Center here in San Diego. Note: I went to 3 practices in Atlanta in my 8 years there, and Intown was by far the best (the other 2 practices I went to were in Midtown). read more

Bottom line: excellent dental skill & orthodontic treatment, so-so bedside manner. I chose to visit Dr. Kearns for adult orthodonture (Clear Correct) because the office was super convenient to me, although her practice was new. Altogether, I saw her frequently over the course of almost two years for regular orthodontic checkups, cleanings, a filling or two, and finished up with two crowns this spring. I've been meaning to write this review for a while, but finally was pushed to after going to a new dentist after a cross-country move. My California dentist was blown away by the quality of Dr. Kearns' work with my crowns and fillings. I was nervous about having a crown put on my top front tooth because it was front & center in my smile, but that turned out beautifully. Dr. Kearns has a wonderful eye for detail and sense of dental aesthetics and I am truly satisfied with my beautiful smile. The minor cons: sometimes I found Dr. Kearns' manner somewhat stiff and even unwelcoming. Fortunately, her staff, Pepe and Megan in particular, make up for that by being friendly and assuring. I don't know how the pricing at intown dental compares to other intown dentists, but despite acknowledging that I was having extensive work done, I was often surprised at my hefty bill. The office staff is terrible. I was not happy with my last appointment there including the dentist. I recently found a new dentist who I love and is way more professional! I am pregnant and can't get x-rays done at the moment so I was going to get my x-rays emailed to my new doctor. After notifying intown dental to get my x-rays emailed over I was informed of a $30 fee. There was no notification when I got the x-rays of a fee if I wanted something that I already paid for. Technically I own the X-rays and intown dental is withholding them from me. The office manager is probably one of the rudest people I have ever had to deal with. Overall a terrible place! After my husband had a horrible experience at Smile Center in Buckhead with Dr. Kent C. Ellington, I search for a new dentist for the family. The reviews were right about Dr. Kearns and staff. It was a pleasant experience from setting the appointment to exam to check out. Dr Kearns knows her stuff. She is our family dentist. read more

I love the staff and the great dental care that I receive at Intown Dental. Dr. Janet Kearns is a fantastic dentist. Gentle and caring. She's like going to a friend . She even came in for me on a Friday evening when my crown fell out. She delayed her dinner party for me!!!! I will never go anywhere else for dental care! Dr. Kearns and staff are always very friendly. There is minimal wait time in the office. They use state of the art equipment that I haven't seen used at my previous dentist's office. I like that they take the time to educate patients about what is going on with their oral health. I really like this dental office. They verified my insurance before my appointment and communicated the financial information to me. Once there, the office is clean and the front staff is friendly. They definitely utilize technology available to the dental profession, such as an ultrasonic cleaner, digital X-rays, and more. The staff is very friendly! I am 26 weeks pregnant and my hygienist was great about making sure I was comfortable and let me have a little break in the middle of my visit. (My fellow prego's know that it's hard to lay on your back for an extended period of time!) My family and I will be going here for a long time, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone! read more
