I'm sharing this review with the hope that it brings more transparency and training to this practice's approach and serves as a heads-up to first-time patients. During my first visit, I expected a routine cleaning, as is standard at most dental offices. Instead, I paid around $100 for x-rays and a session where the dentist briefly brushed and flossed my teeth, demonstrated a new flossing technique focused on gum health, and measured gum pocket depth. I was then told to follow this routine at home and return in six weeks to assess any changes--no cleaning was performed at that first visit. At the follow-up appointment, I was seen by a different dental hygienist whose overly cheerful and rehearsed demeanor felt disingenuous. While she wasn't overtly rude, the interaction felt hollow and uncomfortable, which added to my unease. During the cleaning, she made a snide comment about my dental habits and then completed the rest of the procedure without much communication. I also noticed an unpleasant personal odor, which was surprising and concerning given the setting. Hygiene and professionalism are especially important in a dental care environment, and this contributed to a sense that standards were not being met. Unfortunately, during this visit, I believe the hygienist injured my gums multiple times due to a careless approach in handling sharp instruments. One area in particular has remained inflamed and possibly infected ever since. There was no review or inspection with the dentist afterward, which I had expected based on past experiences at other dental offices. As I was walked to the checkout counter, the hygienist casually mentioned that I "might need antibiotics" in six months if the issue with my gums didn't resolve -- an issue I am not sure I had walking in to this appointment. I never saw the dentist again during that visit, and no additional guidance or follow-up was provided beyond the flossing and brushing routine recommended weeks earlier. This entire experience left me shaken and disappointed. I have no history of gum issues or needing oral antibiotics, and this visit left me worse off than when I arrived. I haven't felt comfortable speaking up, but I'm sharing this because no one should leave a dental visit with lingering pain or uncertainty about the care they received. I genuinely hope this office takes the opportunity to improve how it communicates services upfront and invests in better training for staff--especially when it comes to patient care, professionalism, and technique. I have been living in Atlanta for over 7 years now but have continued to go to my dentist at home in San Antonio on the holidays. I was convinced that I wasn't going to find another dentist as nice, educated, and have as friendly of a staff. I WAS WRONG! I have found the best dentitst. Dr. George Micheals DDS dental office offers quality dental treatment with an extremely warm and inviting atmoshphere, where I'm sure all his patients know they are receiving the highest quality care. Before he does anything Dr. Micheals explains everything and shows you the tools he is going to use and how these tools will assist him. Then when he's in your mouth he explaining step by step what he is doing. It doesn't stop there....when I was finish Mercery (she works the front desk) had a print out of everything I had had done, she explained everything and had a copy for me to keep for my records. She also had a print out of what my insurance will cover and what to expect once she submits the claim. She also gave me an idea of what to expect on my next visit (next week). The only thing is the parking is not the best since its downtown. I parked right next to the office at a meter and when I said I was going to walk out to put a couple more quarters in the meter and two of his staff members volunteered to do it for me. WOW! I only came here because I desperately wanted my gums scraped by the guy from Wham!, but I guess I read wrong. Wonderfully wrong! Serendipitously wrong! Everyone I've dealt with here, receptionists, hygienists and all, are five-Star People. The entire experience of being a patient at Midcity is, in a word, Flawless. I had resigned myself to think that dentistry was just commodity Monkey business with which I couldn't really be happy and all providers would perform about the same, so I hadn't had my teeth looked at since Last Christmas. I decided I should give it One More Try, and my first experience was Amazing; I had a cavity or two, but he went Hand to Mouth and filled those Bad Boys in no time. I am normally irritated at Father Figure-types who assume the patient knows nothing, but he calmly and respectfully, like Jesus to a Child, showed the worn spots on my gums that demonstrated my incorrect flossing technique. Dr. Michaels is able to show the Patience of an Older gentleman, but he's always interested in excited about his patients' lives. Many dentists aren't able to allay their fearful patients, but this office is certainly An Easier Affair, with restrained modern palette, bright but muted lighting, and especially soothing music (nothing Too Funky) to help Heal the Pain. It feels so Safe here that I have fallen asleep during procedures. Like a Baby. Understand: this office isn't in-network with any dental insurance, but they always promptly deal with my insurance as an out-of-network provider, and charge a fair rate for costs that go beyond it. After all, nothing is Free. Also, they're not open on Fridays, but that's not The Strangest Thing -- I'd take off every Friday if my profession allowed! GT Students should avoid this place! Surprise $500+ bill for fillings and extreme sensitivity 6 months later :( First, the misunderstanding of my Georgia Tech student health insurance: The staff was friendly, but they did not understand my GT student insurance coverage, despite being right on the edge of campus and having many GT patients. I wanted to get 2 fillings, and before the appointment, the staff looked over my insurance and said it would be "fully covered." I went ahead and got the fillings, only to find out later that the staff misunderstood my insurance. I ended up with a bill over $500. This is not easy on a grad student stipend! I would never had gotten the fillings done here if I knew they would end up costing that much. When I went in to ask about the bill, the staff took on a legal tone and denied the "fully covered" conversation. Even worse, I now suspect the fillings weren't done very well. It's been several months, and all 3 of the fillings done at MidCity Densitry (I had one filling several months prior to the 2-filling visit mentioned above) now have extreme temperature sensitivity. I have to brush my teeth with warm water to avoid severe pain and can't eat cold foods. While I'm concerned about the worsening sensitivity, I'm definitely not going back after the insurance mix-up. read more

Snakes and dentists are my two biggest fears...and my fear of dentists just got a little better after visiting Mid City Dentistry yesterday. I had a wisdom tooth that broke off before Memorial Day weekend...so I got an extra day of suffering as pay back for not taking very good care of my teeth. I called early in the morning, and they were able to see me right away. The staff could not have been more friendly and the office itself had a lot of style - it was fresh, inviting and didn't feel "cold". I also liked that they were very progressive - with digital x-rays, tiny cameras in your mouth so you can see what they see, automated Novocaine machines and movies and music available. They were extremely kind throughout the extraction, making sure I was comfortable at every turn. They explained everything fully as they proceeded and constantly asked if I had any questions before moving on. During the procedure, I opted for music (they used Pandora) and got to jam to some Guns N Roses as loud as I wanted to drown out the weird "popping" noises that happen when a tooth is being pulled. After the extraction, they spent a great deal of time going over next steps and even gave me a care-bag with water, Progresso Chicken Noodle Soup, mouth rinse, Advils, Tylenol, literature and lip balm. And to top it all off, at the end of the day, Dr. Michaels personally called to check on me, ask if I had any questions or to see if there was anything else he could do to help. I personally think there was a long period of time when doctors got an ego about themselves and forgot that they were a business lacking customer service. It was extremely refreshing to see a dentist and his staff go out of their way to make something as unpleasant as a tooth extraction as great of an experience as possible though incredibly wonderful customer service - from start to finish. I never thought I'd give a review on Yelp for a dentist....much less one with such a glowing recommendation. From the people, to the atmosphere, to the technology to the service - I haven't visited a business that left me with such a great taste in my mouth in a very long time. I've never reviewed anything on Yelp, at all, but I just came from my fifth appointment in four months and I have had an absolutely wonderful experience every time. Four times in five months? Yes. Because, like many people, I was terrified of the dentist and I didn't go for twelve years. My first appointment was amazing. I was so nervous I couldn't stop shaking, but everybody was so nice and the office was calm and tranquil, like a fancy spa. They took a ton of HD photos and x-rays, and then Dr. Michaels came in and went through them with me. He explained so much, from how I can better take care of my gums to why I didn't have many cavities, but did have some periodontal issues. He spent a lot of time with me and was so reassuring and optimistic. A few weeks later I came back for a cleaning, with Debbie, who is a true magician. Then came the big scary thing: root scaling/planing. Seriously, google it. It looks terrifying. But it was a total breeze. I just came from a checkup on the healing from that treatment, and was told my gums were excellent! I'd never been told anything in my mouth was excellent! So, for the extreme dentaphobes out there: this is your answer. The most skilled, professional staff in the best environment. read more

I have been coming here for 2 years or more. Everyone is the office is very friendly. They are very helpful with insurance questions the only down side if that they are out of network for me but my insurance still covers my cleanings and a % of other things. I would quit going here for that reason if the office weren't so pretty and fancy and if Dr Michaels wasn't so nice and charming. Just look at that pic they have of him! But seriously he always acts like he remembers me when he usually only sees me 2 times a year and has a great bedside manner. When I had a cavity filled I was able to relax and watch a movie instead of focusing on what was happening. Parking kind of sucks but that's what you get in midtown. I love the staff and Dr. Michaels at Mid City Dentistry. I had a pretty bad experience at my prior dentist and was super nervous about getting my teeth cleaned and checked out. Dr. Michaels was really sweet and gentle, and the staff are always lovely and sociable. When I had to get a cavity refilled, they remembered that I mentioned (on the first visit, a few months before) that I had a bad experience with my last dentist and talked me through what they would be doing and made me feel comfortable. Before moving to Atlanta, I was terrified of the dentist. I had never really had a good experience with one and so I avoided the regular checkups, cleanings, etc... On Jan. 5th, I developed an excruciating pain in one of my teeth. I immediately went home and to my dentist and found out that I needed a root canal. The dentist I was seeing admitted that he had not done a root canal before, but he could probably do it. I said "No way" and started searching for dentists near Atlanta. I quickly came across Mid City Dentistry and noticed the incredible reviews on every forum and decided I would go and get my root canal (which needed to be done ASAP) at Mid City Dentistry. As soon as I called, I could tell why the reviews were so good. Mercury was able to put me at ease after I explained to her how nervous I was about the procedure. I felt confident about the procedure after the phone call. When I went in and met Joscelyne, I could tell that I was in the right hands. She explained the entire procedure to me and was very patient with me despite my many questions. After meeting Dr. Michaels, I realized just how much the dentist can affect the patient's experience. Dr. Michaels again reiterated that the procedure would be fine. He told me how experienced he was with the root canal procedure and made me feel comfortable and right at home. Pretty soon, I was numbed up and watching "I Am Legend" while the procedure was being done. I felt absolutely no pain during the procedure and was comfortable the entire time. In all of my follow-up visits, I have been treated with the exact same professional care. I have also noticed that they know most of their patients by name and always greet them when they come in. They also always offer a water or a juice. For the first time, I feel very comfortable going to see the dentist. I am no longer terrified of dental procedures. I know that when I walk into Mid City Dentistry that I am going to be treated well and that whatever I am having done will be done right. I also never had a dentist in Atlanta but kept returning to my hometown dentist when I was visiting the family. But then I developed a toothache which never went away and became less than bearable and, with no visit back home in the near future, I had to suck it up and find something local. Being reluctant to choose a dentist and a bit unmotivated about searching, I chose the dentist's office that I walk past whenever I go to the gym. I have no idea about the parking situation because I walk here. I made an initially appointment for an exam and, sure enough, I needed a root canal for that sore tooth. They also gave me a laundry list of other things that were wrong with me that I should eventually get worked on. This is the reason they don't get five stars - It was a huge amount of dental work with a large total expense and presenting this to me after my first visit kinda freaked me out. I knew I had one problem but this was insane. They eventually did break it down into categories of things I absolutely needed soon (root canal and resulting crown) and things that would be nice to have at some point (replacing fillings). Also, it's not cheap. I haven't really shopped around all that much but, in a limited number of comparisons, some of the procedures here do seem to be a bit more expensive than at other places (although, this is tough to really estimate unless you are including every little piece that you eventually are charged for). When I was diagnosed with the root canal, they were able to get me in for the procedure later that day. It was a two-hour procedure and I must say I really enjoyed watching my choice of movie on DVD with big headphones while they did their work. This makes a huge difference. Whereas I normally do not enjoy sitting in the dental chair with my mouth wrenched open for several hours, I actually liked this little movie break in the middle of my day. I began to want to have more stuff done. You can choose to listen to music instead of a movie, too. They also gave me a nice goodie bag when I left with juice, soup, lip balm, water, instructions, pain killers and a prescription for really good pain killers. They seem to do the goodie bag thing every time, with different items depending on what you've had done. I have been here four times in the past two months and I must say that all the staff is very friendly. Sometimes I get much delayed there because I am hanging out chatting after my appointment. And, Dr. Michaels is AWESOME. I love him, I really do. I hug him when I arrive and when I leave (but I don't know if everyone gets to do that so don't, you know, maul him when you first meet him). He has a wonderful chair-side manner, explains things well, works quickly and efficiently, and is just a nice and interesting guy. I recommend Mid City Dentistry! read more

Love this place. I never thought I'd be able to replace my dentist in Seattle, but Dr. Michaels and staff is fantastic. During the cleaning and initial exam he took the time to really explain proper tooth care. I had just gotten a fancy new electric toothbrush and he explained how to get the best use out of it. Sadly, he found two tiny cavities (which they take pictures with using this super cool tooth-cam so you can see exactly what they're talking about and know they aren't trying to pad the new boat fund). I was sooooo scared to get the fillings done because I HATE needles in my mouth. But, I just got them filled yesterday and I have to say that Dr. Michaels was fantastic about that too. He was so nice and appreciated my fears and has a great Novocaine-administering technique to where you honestly don't feel the needles at all. Plus, you get to watch a movie and cover up with a blanket while he works away. And at the end, I was such a good patient that I even got a hug. Love that guy. He has the persona of a small town dentist, but with all the latest greatest equipment! A few other things to note: -The office staff rocks, they are all super nice and totally accommodating. -Both times I was there, they were very efficient and right on time. -Even though they don't take my insurance, they still help with submitting the claim so all I have to do is send them the check from my insurance company - seriously easy. -Optional laughing gas, and movies during procedures - hello, can you say awesome? -They are great about explaining cosmetic type options (like whitening) but not pressuring AT ALL. read more

After recently moving to Atlanta, I made my decision to schedule my husband's visit to Mid City based on Yelp reviews & because they advertise extractions on their website. GOOD CALL EVERYONE! He was impressed upon first contact after explaining he was in a semi-emergency situation experiencing terrible pain with a problematic tooth, and he was scheduled for an appointment immediately. I easily navigated their website in order to conveniently prepare his patient forms & submitted them online prior to his visit. He found the office & staff incredibly comforting & modern, and is extremely impressed with the Dentist. He says he's "the best dentist ever"! So much so, he inquired whether they also treat children for our son! His situation did require an immediate extraction. Dr. Michaels explained every option for this visit, as well as future visits necessary to resolve all his needs. We highly recommend this practice! read more

I went in there to have a cavity refilled and was told I may need a root canal and a crown. I just wanted the cavity refilled and not to be billed a few thousand dollars for all these unnecessary extras. They filled the tooth and told me a root canal was avoided but I would need a crown. I escaped for the day without getting the crown done as it is completely not needed. I then called a month later to schedule a simple cleaning and they took me through this lengthy explanation of how I needed a proper periodontal examination to determine the level of cleaning I needed. I just wanted a simple teeth cleaning, no exams, no bells and whistles just clean my teeth. They said they could not do that without these costly exams first. Why is it that all dentists try to rape you and overcharge you for all these unnecessary exams and procedures? Dentists are like con artists and while I thought this one was different at the end of the day if it quakes like a duck and walks like a duck..... Does any one know a dentist that just does what you want them to do and what you want to pay for???? read more

So, while going to the dentist is not something people often look forward to, I secretly get excited every time I visit Dr. Michaels. The office is beautiful, modern, and pristine. The equipment is state of the art and the staff is UBER pleasant. And while they have the capability of every cosmetic procedure under the sun, they never pressure but are happy to answer any question you may have. Nothing but smiles all around here. ... ... Dr. Michaels and his team/staff are fantastic! I had not been to a dentist in WAY TOO LONG and had a number of painful issues. He put forth a series of appointments to get me on the way to health and man' o' man did he and his staff. They are kind, extremely efficient, at times very funny, and best of all solved my issues in a timely and painless way. Dr. Michaels followed up one big procedure with a personal phone call that evening and gave me his cell phone number to call at any time if I had problems. I had a horrible experience with Dr Michaels. I was a patient of his for 2-3 years. During a filling, he accidentally cracked my tooth that required an emergency root canal the next day. I won't blame him for this. However, it took him two tries to place the crown which still wasn't set correctly after the second time. Also, he replaced an older crown which wasn't placed correctly either. I finally decided to see a new dentist. The new dentist noticed there was still debris left in the root canal performed by Dr Michaels and therefore I had to subject myself to more torture in order to clean out the tooth. Less than 5 years after re-placement of my older crown, I am having to have it replaced again since it wasn't set correctly. Besides a routine cleaning, I wouldn't recommend him. read more
