Jeff and his team is fantastic. I'm a beginner - don't think you can't benefit from his expertise until you're an advanced player. I bought my first acoustic from a big box type music store here in Atlanta. I knew enough it needed a set up - but started my lessons with it out of the box set up. It's a Taylor 200 series. So a pretty expensive model for a "1st" guitar but being a 'late starter' decided I likely would only own 1 guitar. It played fine - heck I didn't really have a comparison point. After about 6 weeks of lessons I decided to have it truly 'set up'. As a beginner I think it's your first reaction to talk it back to that 'big box music store' that offers this service. Instead I did just a little research and found Jeff so I could take it to a real professional. When I got the instrument back I could not believe that even as a beginner I could tell a massive difference in playability. My chords got instantly more clear, touch needed to ring out those chords so much lighter. I had not increased my ability while Jeff had the guitar - I was the same - what changed is Jeff handed me back a much more playable guitar. Jeff and Josh are both incredibly easy to work with. I've gotten to know them both well over the years and probably taken over 20 guitars to them for a variety of reasons from simple setups to strange wiring "ideas" I've come up with. They have happily indulged in my adventures and have now built 12 guitars for me that came to them as a bucket of parts. To say they're fair is an understatement. I tried Jeff at Intown Guitar Repair after sever bad experiences with guitar techs and luthiers at Guitar a Go Go, Ken Stanton Marietta, and Atlanta Discount Music. Jeff's work is quality. I have not had any issues with any of the mods or repairs. He tests the guitar while your there, asks you probing questions, and explains what he's going to do. He has a fast turnaround compared to the snails pace I endured at the above mentioned shops. He makes sure you test the guitar on his vintage Gibson amp, before you leave his shop. His shop is in his craftsman work shop in the back of his house, so parking can be tight at times but never an issue. Jeff is now my permanent Guitar Tech/Luthier. 2004 Fender Stratocaster Deluxe MIM Ash: 1st guitar Jeff modded for me: Install Fender CS69 and SSL5 pickups, shield pickguard, install Fender S1 switch, NOS pots, paper in oil capacitors, fix input jack. Took about a month. Talk about a guitar setup that comes through in a pinch! Jeff, owner of Intown, did a great job on my Modern Fender Jazz. It didn't do so well in our recent move to ATL and the neck was back-bowed a bit. Gave these guys a call and they told me to drop by any time during the day. Fast forward about three hours and I'm standing in the shop. It's a workshop behind the owner's house, thus being a private address. You'll have to call to make an appointment/have work done on your guitar(s). Jeff took a look at my bass and diagnosed it swiftly. "Just needs a setup," he said. I asked if he could have it done by Friday morning and he said no problem. Then, I get a call on Thursday afternoon saying he got to it early. So perfect. I was in a pinch and really needed my bass for a small gig on Friday evening. They really came through there. Also, a setup only set me back $50. My bass? Plays like a dream. He did a great job readjusting the neck. He even set my strings just a tad higher off of the frets in doing so, which I like. (I can be a bit of an aggressive player, so that helps) So, for going local and also not having to drive completely out of the way, I'm happy to be a customer of Intown. read more

Jeff has performed a setup on three of my guitars and his work is amazing. My acoustic was hand-crushingly difficult to play before he worked on it -- now it's a breeze to play. All three guitars were hugely improved by Jeff's work. I'm sure that many luthiers can perform a good setup, so for me the five stars are for not only his work but for his integrity. The first guitar he set up had major static when the volume pots were turned to up to 10. Did they need to be replaced? Nope -- they just needed a good cleaning. My acoustic had a fake bone (that is, plastic) saddle and nut. Should I pay Jeff to upgrade them to real bone? Nope! After a bit of plucking and strumming he thought the guitar sounded great as-is; only upgrade if I became unsatisfied with the tone over time. Not only that but we seem to spend at least half an hour just shooting the breeze every time I come by. Oh yeah -- he has a dedicated shop just for his trade. He's legit. I wish I could recommend this place for guitar repairs etc...But Jeff the guitar repair guy failed me twice! I took my guitar in to have a new neck installed with a setup. I wanted to make sure that this aftermarket neck wasn't going to cause any compatibly issues, so i bring the guitar neck in with the body and have Jeff inspect everything and make sure that there will be no unforeseen problems,before he got to worked on it. After he looked over everything...I was told that they would be no problems and was quoted a price. So, a week later i drop off my guitar. I get a call that the guitar is all setup and ready to rock! well... i take the guitar home and I noticed a buzzing (fret buzz) coming thru my amp.well this is just not cool! i contacted him about the situation and he said he would make it right(but really didn't). WHY oh why would you tell me my guitar is ready when it buzzes like crazy! That means that the guitar was not properly setup or that somebody was hoping that I wouldn't notice or that the buzzing would not bother me. WRONG!!! SOooo...I drop off my guitar AGAIN lol and 3 days later...Jeff calls me and tells me that he can not get rid of the buzz and that he's tried everything! Even a fret level and he still can NOT figure out what is wrong???? According to him,visually looking at the neck he can not see anything wrong(weird right?) . So I gave him the benefit of the doubt ,i mean what else could i do? he is the"expert" guitar repair guy.He has good reviews here on yelp and seems like a nice guy. But Like scooby and the gang, i was going get down to the mystery of the phantom neck buzz.... was the neck curse? Maybe,because it was made from a plank of wood from the old satanic church??? well we are certainly gonna find out! So,I fire up the Mystery Machine... well,well what do you know? The neck is not haunted or cursed.No,no after taking my neck to not 1 or 2 but 3 luthiers...each one was able to see what the problem was. The neck has a "rise in the fretboard" also know as a "ski jump". Funny how all 3 came to the same conclusion! Sorry for the long winded review...but i did so to demonstrate as to why I feel that Jeff lacks the skills to properly diagnose or make repairs( or to the fact that I was possibly ripped off).I know,I know he has good reviews on here and is a nice guy. I had all the confidence in the world that he was gonna be my guitar repair guy!...but It is very obvious as i was speaking to one of the three luithiers that inspected Jeff's work, that the guitar should of never left the shop with that horrible buzzing in the first place!...and so there you have it...... read more

I met Jeff earlier this year when I dropped off a guitar for a re-fret. He took a look at it and told me there is still life in the frets and suggested I just have him do a fret level and crown instead. This saved me quite a bit of money and the guitar plays beautifully now! With the money I saved, I was able to have another of my guitar's frets leveled and crowned. Now I have two 20+ year old guitars that play like new. Jeff is very knowledgeable and even did some custom work I requested on one of those guitars. I took a Jackson guitar in for a bad fret buzz issue as the owner told me it was no big deal. Several days later I called and was told that he couldn't fix it and it was just a "buzzy guitar." When I got there, from across the room I could see how bad he had bowed the neck. He had me pay for strings he put on and I left in disgust. His parking does suck so I agree with the previous poster. It's tight. I then took the guitar that day to another guitar tech who looked at the frets and said a couple of the frets had lifted and that whoever bowed the neck so bad had no idea what they were doing. After about 45 minutes and more new strings the guitar played perfect. I called Jeff and he didn't care one bit. I agree fully with all the negative posters and wonder if the positive reviews are friends and family. read more
