I am a person who writes reviews if the service is good and if the service is bad. My friends and I decided to go to Godfrey for Sunday Brunch. One friend wanted to try out the rooftop. I told her that it was a good choice. I went to Godfrey earlier in the year for Galentine's Day Brunch, and I had a great time. After speaking with my friends, we decided to make reservations for the Portico Pavillion. A $500 deposit was required, which said it goes toward the final bill, along with a 21% service fee and a requirement to "purchase a bottle." Now, it did not specify which bottle or how much. There was another option for our party size to make reservations for the Portico Cabana. A $500 deposit was required, which said it goes toward the final bill, along with a 21% service fee, and "A minimum of one bottle from the Celebrate Menu is required." We decided that we would book the Portico Pavillion, seeing that we did not want to be obligated to purchase a bottle from the Celebrate Menu, which the cheapest bottle was $375. It makes absolutely no sense to purchase a bottle of Brut for that price when we can purchase it for $20 at Target. Now, upon getting to IO Godfrey, my cousin had an issue with the valet. They refused to valet park her Jeep since the doors were not on there. The valet attendant was rude and basically pushed them away as if they were bothering them. We were all seated once I arrived. I was asked to see my credit card and ID by the hostess since it was used to make the reservation. I was fine with that and expected that since I saw that in the confirmation. What I thought was out of the ordinary was for them to want to hold my ID and credit card for the entire duration of our reservation. The $500 charge was already completed and cleared four days prior. Our party was seated at the Pavillion as initially intended. Our server came by with menus and then told us that our reservation required a bottle purchase. She then turned the page to the Celebrate Menu. I told her that's not correct, and we did not book the Cabana. Our reservation said that we were required to "purchase a bottle," but it did not specify where on the menu. The server then said she would go and speak to the manager. The manager then came by our area. She told us with our reservation that we were required to make a bottle purchase from the Celebrate Menu. I told her no, that, that's not correct. The website does not say that. I had the screenshots of it says. I specifically booked the Portico Pavillion so that we were not required to purchase a bottle from the Celebrate Menu. I showed her other bottles that we were interested in purchasing. The manager said that we couldn't purchase those, that it wasn't on the Celebrate Menu. I then told her that she was saying something totally different from what was written. Then, a very condescending tone, she replied, "I know what's written because I wrote it!" It's in your confirmation email as well after booking. I told her no, it's not. I know how to read. It does not say that. She then kept telling me that it did. I told her that she may have meant to say that, but it does not say that. It's not my fault that you did not properly articulate that. The manager told us that was the requirement to sit in that area, and she would do us a favor and take off $50 for the inconvenience. That was not sufficient since the website was incorrect. We elected to move to another area, and we did not want for us to be dictated off of what menu we needed to purchase from. The only reason why we still stayed after the entire ordeal was because my card was already charged the $500. We ended up being seated at another table that was far off to the side. We ordered mimosas for the table. The server brought the champagne over along with the fruit puree mix. She purposely poured the champagne to the top of the glasses. There was barely enough for us to all have one glass, and there were eight of us. Then the server said, "Oh, look, I guess you will have to purchase another bottle. " When we tried to pour in the fruit puree, the champagne overflowed, so the majority of the champagne ended up on the floor. Luckily, our food at least tasted good. I feel the need to shed light on this situation. Myself like many people often rely on reviews and reference them prior to trying out new places. Many times, we from the Black and Brown communities are looked at being unable to pay or hostile. This management just dismissed our concerns. Beautiful view and the food was great. I ordered the two mocktails (mojito and a peach tea drink). The mojito was great, the peach drink didn't have a strong peach taste that I hoped it would but it wasn't bad. I ordered the Godfrey roll and asked for them to keep the seeds in the habenero pepper and it was fantastic. I also had the steak flatbread without the steak (not a fan of steak) and it was delicious. The shishito peppers were some of the best I've ever had. Definitely worth the price. I want to start off saying that we came to Chicago for my friends bday weekend. She had been here before for the sushi and was raving about it... we didn't get any because the kitchen was closed. My review is based on my experience minus the food. Location: Chicago is a beautiful city, the architecture is breathtaking so natural the location of this bar was perfect. Parking: we ubered, but I believe they had valet Service: this is where it gets complicated, I'm not sure how it was supposed to be handled but we had to ask the bartender to come to the table to take our drink order. I discovered this lovely roof top by accident. I was looking for some place for The Doctor and I to start out his birthday weekend celebration on October 8 where we could spend some time outside having adult beverages. I did some research and saw that this place was within walking distance from Marchesa, where we were going to spend the evening. We were unfortunately 30 minutes late getting there due to horrific traffic and I told The Doctor that there was a good chance we might not be able to get in, so we braced ourselves. The entrance to the bar is from an elevator that is immediately to the left as you walk through the door into the lobby. We arrived upstairs and to our surprise, we were allowed to be seated. I was still in a pissy mode and our server, Madison immediately lightened my mood. I mentioned about us being late and how bad the traffic was. Her fix was to bring me a glass of prosecco on the house. What The Doctor and I didn't know was that the Godfrey has a Happy Hour menu, with $7 glasses of prosecco. That was definitely a mood booster. Then Madison recommended a Pineapple Smash (Don Julio anejo, fresh juiced maui gold pineapple, coconut, house-made sage & ginger cordial). This is not normally something I would drink due to the coconut and pineapple, but I have to say it was wonderful. FYI, this was not a part of the Happy Hour. Since we here having eats later in the evening, we decided to have a little snack of Wagyu Beef Sliders (3 sliders with bacon jam, blue cheese & fries) and Avocado Toast (sliced brioche, smoked salmon, cucumber, tomato relish & herbed cream cheese). Both of these were delicious and the way they do avocado toast is the way I need it. Normally avocado toast is not something I would ever order out, but this was fresh and delish. The bar itself is lovely in terms of the décor and I love the ability to be inside and feel outside at the same time. Madison was amazing and we have been back again and asked to sit in her area and she was still just as amazing. She made a point of checking in on a regular basis to make sure we were all right. There is a $75 non-refundable deposit on Fridays, but it goes towards your bill. I feel the deposit is a great idea as you don't get people just nursing one drink and taking up real estate hours on end. There is also a dress code (smart, casual-elegant attire. No baseball caps, athletic apparel, tank tops, baggy or ripped clothing, exposed chains, flip flops, sandals, or athletic shoes. Shorts are permitted prior to sundown, but not after). We have been back there several times since October 8th with The Queen. They had her new favorite drink, The Frosé All Day (Ketel one botanical, grapefruit & rosé, dry rosé & strawberry lemonade). She is a big strawberry lemonade and at $10 a pop, she was in heaven. Our visits with Madison easily made this a five start event, but I was there with fellow Yelper Latrice A on a Thursday. Our server was nice, but definitely not as attentive as Madison. Usually when I sit down I will tell my server to keep an eye on my glass and to not let it go dry. Now some my think that I am joking but I am as serious as a heart attack. This particular person was nice and ok, but I had to look around for him several times. When I have to rubber neck for my server, that is not a good thing for me. I want less looking and more drinking. Nice scenery. Service was weird. Our server(didn't catch her name) kept pressuring us to buy food and once we did, she ignored us for the remainder of the night. She walked past us several times and she didn't notice that we were trying to get her attention. She stopped checking on us and didn't even look at us to notice us waving. Even when she was serving the people adjacent to us, she failed to notice us waving. I had to jump out of my seat and put my hand in her face to get her attention finally. I mentioned that we had been trying to get her attention and she acknowledged that she had walked past us several times and didn't notice. We were going to get more drinks but after that treatment decided to just get the check. She dropped the check off and disappeared. My husband got tired of waiting and took our check to another server to check is out. It was our first experience at this rooftop and it was my birthday. If I am being forced to pay 21% for service I would like it to be good service. This was not good service. It was very disappointing to be treated this way. The table we had for brunch for a party of 5 was the size of a cocktails only table. Meanwhile, there were tables bigger and better suited, all with Reserved placards on them. None of them actually ended up having people seated at them the entire time we were there...~2 hours. Food and drinks came and there was zero room on the table, and the server would just stand and expect us to make room vs the servers properly making space then getting the plates. We ultimately held two of the dishes, one of which was a 12" pizza, on our laps and used a menu placed on the extra chair as a place to set drinks down on (thank goodness we had the extra chair because one person was not able to join). And then when we went to pay the bill, we asked to have it split evenly between 2 credit cards and were told it was not possible. Just what century are we living in?!?!? It's not like we asked to split amongst 10 credit cards. The solution offered was for one party to pay cash so the other could end up with 1/2 the bill for the credit card. Really?!? Ambiance wise, the roof was not open, which would have been fine if they had air on. But it was just ceiling fans. Instead we ended up in a greenhouse with glass all around us in 93 degree Chicago heat. Just miserable. We overheard a woman at the table next to us send her glass of red wine back because it was hot. Why would that wine bottle be in a temperature controlled storage? A few of my friends and I decided to go check this rooftop out on the fourth of July. We made reservations and got a beautiful table with a nice view. The place seemed like a perfect place to spend a hot summer day. We got froses and fire and ice drinks with the truffle fries and they were delicious. For our second round, we decided to get the fourth of July sangria special. Unfortunately, the sangria was nothing as advertised. We just got a decanter with dry white wine, there was no fruit, melon or moscato to be found in the drink. However, we will say, the manager was very friendly, appreciated our feedback and came up with a solution. He just replaced the sangria with our previous drinks. While I do not recommend the sangria, the rooftop and other drinks were good and deserve a second chance. read more

Wow, what a rooftop! I|O Godfrey has everything you could want: good drinks, tasty food, amazing views, & friendly staff. This place is worth a visit! A few friends and I grabbed happy hour drinks here and had a fantastic time. We were able to virtually pick our own table (from what was not yet occupied) and enjoy all they had to offer. Our waiter was prompt, knowledgeable, and all business. The drinks were well-made and tasty, not over-flowing with ice like some other places. And the food... yum! We had sliders, peppers, humus, and fries and everything was delicious! We couldn't stop eating! The pièce de résistance was by far the views. You get a beautiful, unobstructed view of the skyline from most of the tables and couches. They really executed well here. And all this in a more upscale (but not stuffy) atmosphere. This is a very cool rooftop bar in River North! We went for after dinner drinks during the weekend and it was very busy, though we never had to wait more than a few minutes for our drinks. They have delicious signature cocktails and also make all of the traditional drinks very well! There is a very beautiful view from this bar, as well as beautiful lighting and decor. My only complaint would be that there were a lot of reserved tables, pretty much the majority of the room. A lot of them were empty for the couple of hours we were here, which was frustrating as there was not any other seating and we had someone in our party who can't stand for long. We ended up having to just lean against a wall, which got uncomfortable - especially looking at 10 empty tables that we weren't allowed to sit at. Very low lighting, even with outside light coming in. If you have old eyes or lowlight blindness, I would recommend bringing a book light or using your phone flashlight to help you read the menu. Expensive drinks that are 100% worth it. All the food was delicious. My favorite was the tofu bites, but our companion loved the shrimp tacos best. Our server was so great as well. Snagged an invitation to a girls night out in a private rooftop igloo on a very cold Chicago night. The igloo came complete with indoor cozy lounge furniture, fit our party of 4 well and would have been adequate for up to six people. My friend is in town for the weekend, and she's staying at the Godfrey hotel. We decided to check out the rooftop. It's partially outdoors and indoors which is nice. It's also got a beautiful view of the city. We came here on a Friday evening around 5, without a reservation, and it was right before it got busy. Our bartender Mike was great, he made my friend an espresso martini and a summer mule for me. We also decided to order a bite to eat, we ended up trying their wagyu sliders and upgraded to truffle fries. They also do happy hours Monday through Friday here, and we had just missed the happy hour specials. The atmosphere, service and food were great so it's still worth it, even though you're paying the downtown Chicago premium. I would've wanted to check out the outdoors part of the rooftop however it started raining, so I decided to stay in and it was getting busy and we didn't want to abandon our seats at the bar. People were already asking if we are leaving or staying. I'd recommend checking out the rooftop for the views, the drinks and bites to eat if you're in the area. read more

My friends and I decided to book an igloo for our winter experience at the Godfrey. We paid our booking fee and for a bottle weeks before our arrival. We arrived at the venue and was warmly greeted. Once we got upstairs to the host, she begin to walk us to our igloo and then quickly said "Ohh you guys rsvp for a igloo... wait here... let me check something." She went back to the host stand then came back & told my group, we over booked. She also stated their new system kicked our rsvp out because we booked "To far in advance". We asked to speak with a manager and the manger came out. She had a completely different story; she stated, "You guys didn't book an igloo"! We showed her the email and she said I read the email already, with a nasty attitude. At this point we can't believe this is happening but we kept our cool. Another manager was standing in the corner just looking until the woman manage called him over. He comes over and say, "I'm not reading no emails, you didn't reserve an igloo and that's final". We read the email to him word from word and now he is looking shocked. At this point they ALL know they are in the wrong and offers us to sit in another area of the rooftop. They refunded our $200. They sent us a round of drinks and free desert. Let me leave you guys with this.... as much as I don't want to believe that they were not using the race card. It's hard to think they weren't. It was two open igloos when we arrived and they didn't want to sit us in them. They were very harsh with their words and had no compromise. In our group we had a total of 5 African Americans ( 4 women and 1 man). I'm amazed that I have to even write this but at this point I'm not surprised. We paid our money just like any other patriot. No other group or person was treated like they treated us. It was distasteful and it ruin our entire night. If I could really rate my experience on Saturday night... it would be zero stars!! read more
