Make a quick stop here on my way home from Des Moines. The waitress and cashier were both friendly and sociable, and the food came out quickly and efficiently, but it was sub-par even by truck stop standards. I ordered the southwest burger, which was bland and uninspiring to say the least. The fries were mediocre, and two of them were entirely uncooked. I rarely would recommend fast food, but maybe try Taco Bell instead if you are passing by here. read more

My wife and I decided to take our grandchildren here for the buffet a couple of weeks ago. It was us two adults and three children under the age of 11. When I was a kid this was a fantastic place to eat and my family and I went here quite often. This is no longer the case it seems. As I said we all had the buffet and the food was terrible! It was either overcooked and dried out or cold and hard. No in between. The only item I found remotely edible were these little appetizer cinnamon rolls they had at the buffet. All of the food was very bland and tasteless and the grandkids were the unhappiest of us all.........until the bill arrived. Then I was the unhappy one. $75.00 for the five of us. I couldn't believe my eyes!! Especially for such lousy food and equally lousy service! We reluctantly paid the bill and vowed never again! I will always fondly remember the Iowa 80 of my youth and young adulthood, but will never return here to the "World's Largest Truckstop" to eat again unless I'm going to one of the connected fast food establishments. A funny side note is that we took our family to Golden Corral two nights later and the food was awesome!! The bill for seven adults and four children???? $101.00 and that included the tip!!! I stopped here on my way back home to Marshalltown. I had moderate high hopes for the buffet as the truck stop itself is really cool. This is the most disgusting food I have eaten in recent memory. The turkey is chewy and dry... sees reheated multiple times. The meatloaf is dense, not much flavor, and has a sauce that is mostly just ketchup on it. Fried shrimp was room temp and appears to be frozen and just thawed...it is also very chewy. There is not a single enjoyable thing here for the $14 I paid, and I am in no way a food snob Very, very disappointed. read more

I NEVER want to waste my time or money on this buffet, lunch or dinner EVER AGAIN!!! Grrrrrr!!! I find it really insulting to put this cheap slop out for the truck drivers or any other person to digest. Soup kitchens serve tastier, healthier food for the under privileged then what is presented here! Another reviewer said Pilot had bought them out and the food quality has suffered. Amen brother! WOW! I thought I was the only one that noticed, glad to know I'm not alone. :). My husband drives truck & wanted to take me to a buffet before we head to the house. Me, knowing this buffet is IT between where we were and the house objected loudly, just like I have the last 2-3 times(we ended up eating at Taco Bell 1-2 of those times!) we get inside and he asked how much the lunch buffet was, $9.95. Alright, probably end up blowing $20 on lunch wherever we ate, so we stayed for buffet. I went straight for the hot food. The mashed potatoes were instant/had a stale/old taste, the corn was out of a can & did not have a nice flavor, the gravy beef or chicken, I had the beef gravy and scraped it off my potatoes. Not tasty! There are packet gravies that are tasty and then there are the ones they put out for you to eat here. So here I am finally having my say, better than venting on one of the gals that work there. The fried chicken wasn't anything special, minimal coating & kinda dry. You know, I was wondering sitting there if any actual cooking/baking goes on in the "kitchen" ? Just curious. Well, there must be if people order off the menu. I will say the rolls were good, IF you picked a fresh one out of the basket BUT now instead of butter you get a "blend" of butter and good ol margarine. mmm mm. That's it for the hot side. Now for the cold side. 2 kinds of lettuce, when I got there the good stuff was gone & the other had browning that I picked out. Not a lot of healthy good stuff to put on your salad. Radishes should be in water to keep crisp, they weren't. Someone thought (maybe they r color blind) it was perfectly fine to plop the thousand island scoop in the ranch dressing!!! WHAT?! LOL I didn't bother with any of the creamy "salads" or "puddings" . The grapes had spots so I picked out the best looking 5-6 & 4 pcs of melon. I think this time my husband finally agreed with me and we won't be eating here again. 5? Years ago is when I had the only decent buffet here at Iowa 80 Kitchen. Not very impressed. Service and atmosphere where fine, but the food had no flavor whatsoever. House ribeye with green beans and mashed potatoes and gravy. Only the gravy had any flavor at all. I never use steak sauce but I did for this meal. Most of the greens beans were left untouched. For a $30 meal I'm really disappointed. read more

I'm retired and travel all over the country each year I return to the the I80 truck stop for the great food and service.

Me and friend ended up here since the restaurant we really wanted was telling us a 20 minute wait at hardly 5:00 p.m. for a table. So on the Interstate I went to go see about the buffet at Iowa 80 Truckstop. It wasn't busy and were seated quickly, brought silverware wrapped in a napkin and extra napkins placed on table We were told to go ahead by waitress while she goes to get our pops. The salad plates are in a cooler and were frosty cold. There were two types greens, iceberg/spring mix, and chopped romaine. Plenty of usual fixin's from cukes, to broccoli, grape tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, shredded cheddar, red onion, black olives, chopped hard boiled eggs, sliced yellow banana peppers, radishes, carrots, etc. Four dressings, I had blue cheese. Also towards the end were prepared salads like potato, macaroni, spiral creamy Italian, cottage cheese, tomato and cubed mozzarella basil salad. Returned to table and started in on tossed salad, It was icy cold from the plate, everything was fine until I tasted something off. I thought maybe it was the black olives since they did taste like the tin can. I then tried another grape tomato later through the salad and yup, it was rotten. Told my friend to pull his tomatoes out of his salad, they were rotten. The prepared potato salad was very good and the macaroni salad tasted like the Amish macaroni salad you get at WalMart. It is sweet because of the sweetened condensed milk in it. I do have that recipe, but you don't see that very often out on a salad bar. Next we tried the other side of the buffet which was the hot food. We saw a girl bring out a fresh pan of chicken and dumplings and replace the old pan on the line. First was a pile of mashed potatoes (truckstop staple) and two gravies (beef, chicken). Second were a couple pasta dishes that were obviously dried out and I am not sure if you stirred it that it would make much difference except just break he pasta noodles down even more. One was marinara with mostaccioli and other was alfredo with penne. Next was dried out fried chicken. Skipped that. Then the chicken and dumplings. Were good actually. Also had the buttered corn, meatloaf, mashed potatoes and beef gravy, and pork BBQ ribs that were fall off the bone. Only surprise was the meatloaf didn't have diced onion or green peppers in it like mom makes. But did have the thick baked ketchup on top. It was fair to good. At the end of the hot buffet was sliced pork roast, deep fried fish chunks, hush puppies in a basket, I am sure were cold and dry, and tartar sauce. Skipped that too. Some dinner rolls and biscuits, butter. For dessert there were a few pastries set out on trays, jello cups topped with whipped cream, cookies, chocolate cake, some apple pie very small slices. Friend said his chocolate cake was crusty dry probably from setting there airing out since lunch. I had a cream cheese danish and chocolate chip cookie. The cookie just fell apart and crumbled from being set to air out all day but had flavor. And the only thing decent on the danish was digging out the center cream cheese, which was pretty dried out. Rest was dry as everything else. Just those Sam's Club danishes you get 24 in a case and coworkers drag in every so often type danishes, ya know. I mean I was full and so was he, but the quality for the price just wasn't there for $13.75 each. We left a meager tip. I don't tip well at buffets where I get up and get my own food and do the work. On the way home, I commented to my friend that if we had water to drink and the entrees we were planning to order there at the first place, it would have actually been less expensive, way better, and probably would have had left overs. read more

Ok I am a semi driver and my route is from cedar rapids to bettendorf Iowa. I stay here most of the time at the Iowa 80 truck stop. Well it's been a while since I have had a good home cooked meal. So I decided to go into the Iowa 80 kitchen to eat, but the buffet was closing so after browsing the menu for a bit I decided to get the 14 oz house ribeye entree which comes with a salad, a roll, corn, and any potato of your choice. You get all of this for the price of twenty dollars. I'm not one to normally spend that much for one meal on myself. However I ordered the steak medium well. So while waiting for my steak to cook the waitress brought out my salad, roll, and ranch dressing. The salad consisted of two cucumber slices and two grape tomatos which was really mushy. All on top of at least a half of a head of lettuce. As I dig out the hard pieces of core I notice several brown wilted pieces of lettuce so I pick them out as well as the tomatos. I then call the waitress over to ask for some more ranch dressing because the little sautee cup they gave me was not enough for all the lettuce they had given me. She looked at me and said noo, and I said um yes please. Shen then rolled her eyes and said fine I guess. she then went to the back and came out with a entire cup of ranch I mean a 16 oz glass of the stuff. She then says is that enough for you?? So I eat the salad and she finally brings my steak and baked potato out to me, and I notice right away the steak has lots of blood Oozing out of it. I cut into the steak and the first few outer crisps were ok but then the third cut into the steak was all beef tartar. The steak was cold and raw from there on out. The waitress walked up and asked how does it taste I said well its ok I guess, but it's a little to under cooked for my taste. She then says it's ok I guess and rolls her eyes and walks off. Not one time was I asked if she could take it back to cook it some more or anything. Any how I'm glad that I don't spend this much money on food for my self very often, because it was not at all worth the price!!! Oh and the twenty dollars doesn't include a drink that's almost three dollars extra. Would not recommend any one paying that price for a steak from here. The service was not great at all and I'm sorry to say this because I love the truck stop, but the food and service tonight were both well under par. read more
