The food is consistently good and the staff is friendly. The prices are a bit high, but the quality is there and it is one of the only restaurants in Tipton. Good for takeout or dining in. I got takeout recently (pictured) and the chicken sandwich was really good; big portions and flavorful. When I go for dine-in, I am totally the odd one out as everyone else seems to be regulars, but the food is a 10/10 so I will keep going back. read more

Not many recent reviews for this place so I decided to add mine. Not many choices in town so popped in here. Old reviews stated the restaurant needs updating. They must have listened. Reading old reviews I was totally expecting a hole in the wall. I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant has been updated. The place was very clean. It was just the three of us (husband, myself and son). We all had their 3 egg omelette. The omelettes came with a side of potatoes and toast. The plates were on the larger side. All ingredients were fresh. The server was very pleasant and attentive. I would recommend for all the negative reviewers to revisit this restaurant, although not sure what their dinners look/taste like. read more

DO NOT go here. Myself and others were treated with horrible service. We sat down, and a teenage host made some very rude and distasteful comments to us. Then, not even five minutes later an older woman came to our table to say we will need to leave (along with more rude comments) if we can't respect their staff. Meanwhile, we had only just sat down. I feel some of the reviews posted are perhaps true, but a bit harsh. My wife and I have eaten in this restaurant twice, and were satisfied both times, which were 2 years apart. The food isn't 5 star food, but it tastes good and no one should leave hungry. The waitress was friendly in a small Iowa town way, which this is. The restaurant is open every day, which is somewhat rare in small town Iowa. We would, and probably will, return. After all, choices in this size town are somewhat limited.....fast food and Mexican. read more

Bigger menu than I expected and the food was good. Service was quick and friendly. Stopped in because we were in the area overnight and while it was only 1 of 2 or 3 options for dinner, it did not disappoint. It was recommended by the owners of the Tipton Hotel, and it lived up to their recommendation. Had a steak one night and a hamburger steak another night. Both meals were very good! Everything was prepared well and the salad had fresh, crisp lettuce and other veggies. Meat was cooked right and had great flavor, and the fries were excellent. read more

My family had breakfast here while visiting friends in Tipton, IA. It was a great little spot for your typical breakfast foods - eggs, pancakes, omelet, sausage, bacon, coffee, etc. The prices were perfect and service was great. I go there from time to time for breakfast and it is the best I have ever had. I would recommend it over any large chain breakfast restaurant. Their omelettes are great and they give you plenty to eat. It has a laid back, old school diner feel to it and is a nice quite place to eat and relax. It is a family diner as well so all ages are welcome. It is owned by a family and most of them work in the restaurant. They are incredibly friendly and polite. Place needs to update and serve LESS frozen prepared stuff. The waitstaff is outstanding here I'd give them five separate stars if I could because quite honestly they deserve it. Every time I go in this place there is some angry foreign guy in the kitchen yelling at everyone. They serve a fantastic baked chicken & dressing on Sundays, and their breakfasts are really good except the sausage they serve is a little funky like brown and serve sausage. The soups are all homemade, and are sometimes hit and miss flavorwise. It's a pretty clean place. They probably should consider reducing their menu offerings-it's several pages long. This is your typical small town diner. They offer the traditional mix of American cuisine. They never have served bad food, but I wouldn't go in expecting anything exciting. The wait staff is a dice roll on if you will get good service or not. Some are great, some I would have rather run the food myself. Some are fast and attentive, some are slow. This place has changed hands a few times in the past 5 or 6 years and could definitely use an update. Currently for the past 6 months or so they have had a 2x4 propped up against the front sign to hold it up, which doesn't do much for its image. read more

For almost 10 years my husband and I used to manage a business out in Tipton and used to eat at the Tipton Family Restaurant quite often. That was about 4 years ago. Just yesterday (03/08/2014) we were back in Tipton for a Funeral visitation and planned on going to the restaurant for dinner that night before going home. We were excited to taste their delicious fried chicken again. Quite to our surprise the chicken was terribly over-cooked - to the point where we had to stab it with our forks to even get inside, past the breading. Underneath the breading the meat of the chicken actually had burn marks from the hot grease. It was cooked so long that what (burned) meat that was actually on the bone was almost gone. In essence - we had a plate of bone covered with burned over-cooked breading - there was no meat there that was fit to try to eat. When my husband pointed it out to the waitress she said she was sorry and would talk to the owner about it, who in turn offered us either a different choice of meat or $2.00 off each meal. My husband asked for the ribs instead. As he was waiting for his ribs the waitress came back over and said that the owner would not honor the deal - he felt that my husband had already ate 1/2 the chicken before he complained. The man would not come over to our table, which I felt was quite rude so my daughter went over to where he was sitting and confronted him. He then went into the kitchen and brought out my husbands plate with the "chicken" mess on it. He showed it to her, then said that the chicken was NOT over-cooked, it was just "CRISP". My daughter then pointed out to how it was not only over-cooked but that there was no meat on the bones to even try to eat because it was too burned. The owner then rudely went into the kitchen. About 10 minutes later the waitress came back and told us she was very sorry but the owner told the cooks NOT to fix my husband his ribs. Now, this man might not know us personally but we have ate in his establishment for years and NEVER have we complained or sent any food back until this. Another couple sitting at a table said she had the same thing happen to them, only with the over-cooking of fish and the owner acted the same way with them as he did with us. Now, correct me if I'm wrong but if someone eats all their fried chicken (or fish), shouldn't there only be empty bones on the plate? Not in this case, the plate actually had more on it than when it was 1st served to us (from all the rock hard breading - trying to get down to some sign of actual meat). I cannot tell you how shocked we were in this mans behavior, and un professionalism. Not only did he make us and his own staff very uneasy but also other patrons who were there to eat. Instead of talking to the cook about over-cooking the meals he chose to lose customers who used to be loyal but will never go back there to eat. This is the only real restaurant for Tipton (fast food otherwise), perhaps the owner has decided that because of that he can afford to treat people as if they're trying to steal a meal from him. What a shame that is for Tipton. I wonder how many more people who would visit there won't be coming back because of him? read more
