This is an amazing little restaurant. We grew up in Iowa and now live in Minnesota. Maid-Rites remind us of our childhood. We couldn't pass on by! The place is clean and decorated like a 50's diner. Muscatine maid rite was really good. We weren't sure if we supposed to go to the counter to order as we sat for a while but someone eventually said they'll be over in a second. The malt was tasty and the left over cup was enough for a second refill. The maid rite was perfect size and delicious. The fries were fresh and hot! This restaurant doesn't look like much when you drive by but it's phenomenal food with great root beer.

I LOVE this Maid Right it is really good. Every time I go there " once a year every year" it just melts in my mouth. I 100% recommend this and if you live in the area you should go. Originally founded in this town, this unapologetically nostalgic old school legendary joint oozes charm. And the service is good. It is in fact the name and their own invention, the Maid Rite which is a loose meat sandwich. I like to be a non conformist and get it as a Cheese Rite. A choice of several cheeses are available. To the uninitiated it's a doggone loose meat sandwich so like imagine a sloppy joe miles the sloppy. So. Remember on the show Roseanne... when Roseanne and her friends open up the restaurant that sold "loose-meat" sandwiches? That restaurant idea was entirely based of THIS restaurant. Maid-Rites are the ORIGINAL loose-meat sandwiches. When I was growing up there were three Maid-Rite restaurants in Muscatine. In recent years, it's been whittled down to one location. The interior of the final location (located on Hwy. 61, north of Wal-Mart) is designed to look like a 50's diner, with chrome and red everywhere, and a juke box in the corner. You seat yourself upon arriving. Depending on when you go, it can be quite busy, and hard to find a table. The menu is basically what you'd expect. Maid-Rites of several varieties. Fried foods. Fountain sodas. One thing that they are famous for is their root beer, which arrives to your table in an icy, chilled mug. I always get a cheese-rite (or if I'm SUPER hungry, a MEGA Cheese-Rite). This is basically just a Maid-Rite with cheese sauce... and the MEGA is just larger than a regular Maid-Rite. You can opt to get your sandwich "extra juicy" which basically means they don't drain the meat at much when taking it out of the hot pans. With the combo baskets, you get a choice of regular or beer battered fries (go with the beer battered). We also usually get an order of fried mushrooms. At the end of the meal, the waitress give you a ticket and you go and pay at the register. Maid-Rite is something that you should try if you are going to be in the area at all. Even if it's not your thing (though I can't IMAGINE someone NOT liking a delicious Maid-Rite), it's one of those famous local places that you should give a shot. :) read more

Maid Rite is a Midwestern thing, for those of you who are not indoctrinated. These are "loose-meat" sandwiches made with finely ground, steamed and seasoned beef on a white bun. The standard toppings are yellow mustard, minced onion and thinly sliced dill pickle. They are really good, when at their best and are a local favorite. Maid Rites are franchised and you will find them in a number of Midwestern towns. Muscatine is the original home of this delicacy, but I knew of them from my childhood in central Iowa, before I lived in Muscatine. The original Maid Rite diner is long gone and there have been as many as three such restaurants open at one time in Muscatine in the past 20 years. There is only one now and it appears to be doing OK. Hopefully it can remain successful. We always go there when on return visits to Muscatine. My sister (Yelper Sue T) and her hubby always stop at another Maid-Rite (Clinton?) on their way back home to central Iowa. My brother and I always stop at the one at the Amana exit along I-80 when we go back home. I will say I have not found them to be identical at every place I have had them. The one in Grinnell (now closed) served them without any salt. They were not good. The one at Toledo, IA did not warm the buns, they were cold out of a fridge. This is four star nostalgia diner food of a local and unique style. For those familiar, it is loved. For others, it may be strange. So stop in and get a couple. Don't put catsup on them! That would be tragic. Don't worry about a little grease. That is part of the deal so don't order them "dry". By the way, last time I decided to try their pork tenderloin. I am on a low key search for the best breaded Pork-T sandwich and have a long way to go. I would rate it three stars out of five. The meat is pretty meager and is in fact, ground or tenderized. This makes it very tender, but there is no texture and not much pork flavor. Ms T's chocolate malt was not worth re-ordering. A little weird in fact. We could not figure out exactly why. I would stick to the signature mug of root beer. There are now a lot of variations of the Maid-Rite; Cheese-Rites, different sizes, etc. If it is your first time, stick to the standard, before you branch out and try to get fancy. As he was remaking my food he was scolded and reminded to wear gloves by the manager. He then made a joke about my underwear being up my ass. I will NEVER return and advise others not as well. Classic, unchanged, simply delicious. I've been craving a Made Rite for a while and the new location on the bypass didn't disappoint. I had a bacon cheese Rite with mustard, onion, and pickle, the beer fries, and a frosty mug root beer. So freakin good! I also ordered(and ate) a cheese Rite. The 50's diner decor was perfect and not campy. I hope they stay put because I will always come back when in town. Whenever I think of my old man's hometown of Muscatine, the Maid-Rite comes to mind right away. I enjoyed the 50's look to the restaurant. This place is better than any other fast food joint. I ordered the Mega-Rite. A lot there to eat! I got filled up. I barely had room for the sweet potato fries. And those were equally good. Excellent service! The waitress would constantly check back with my lady friend and I. Making sure we were doing well. We left her a decent tip. The two of us had no complaints but plenty of compliments. read more

When I visited my family I always get 8 cheese rites to take home.Muscatine is the only one that's makes them right.

The maid-rite practice of squeezing every bit of moisture out of the meet, which also reduces the flavor, makes it very difficult to actually pay the ridiculous price for a maid-rite given the size has also gotten so small. I simply asked for every bit of moisture to NOT be squeezed out and added "..., but not dripping, just not turned into sawdust." I get back to the hotel, open the bag and find 2 gooey soggy buns wrapped around soaking wet meet. Apparently if it isn't dry as dust it must be dripping wet. This has happened in the past at this location which is why I over explain that I don't want it dripping and I don't want sawdust either. Unfortunately there isn't an alternative location in Muscatine because they are all closing down due to corporate greed and piss poor management. I grew up eating maid-rites, so there is a fondness I have for them and get one every time I get back to visit family. Unfortunately none of us get a real maid-rite any more. Instead we get a subtle reminder of the flavor and for that we pay just a stupid price. read more

Server was rude, she and others were complaining about the customers coming In to eat and the lady doing the drive through stuff was yelling at the cook telling them her customers were waiting to long that the dine in customers didn't matter. Tables were dirty and floor was nasty in stead of complaining about the customers coming in the restaurant take that time and clean the tables and floor. Meal came out cold and when we said something she got an attitude. Do not recommend and will not be back. read more

Love love love love love Maid Rite. I took a friend here for the first time after raving about the loose meat sandwiches the entire 4 hour ride from Chicago. I have been to a few Maid Rite's, but this one I especially liked because of the old-time feel inside. It reminded me of a 50's style diner, with a small juke-box on each table so you could individually select the music. The root beer came in frozen frosted mugs which was phenomenal after a long hot car ride, and as always the sandwich hit the spot. We even opted to get the beer battered fries as opposed to the regular fries - excellent choice. If only they would expand the franchise a bit more to the east, so that I didn't have to journey so far to get such fantastic food. read more

We have been to many Maid Rites around Iowa and Illinois, But this Maid Rite is absolutely the very best. They use cheese sauce on their Cheese Rites, (The loose meat doesn't fall all over the place) Why do so many Maid Rites use sliced cheese? Corporate decision most likely. It is on the edge of town so we make the trip from the Quad Cities quit often. They do go through a lot of young workers but the service has always been good. If our local Maid Rite was anything like this one I would eat there five days a week and with the kids on the weekend. read more

A Muscatine classic (so I heard from one of the servers) is in my opinion a must go. I had coffee, a cup of chili and a chicken salad and the food was prompt and absolutely nothing wrong with it. I just returned to New York following a weeklong trip to visit my dad back in Muscatine, Iowa. Let me just say - I was excited about going out to dinner for Maid Rites! This was my second time eating one and it was delicious. I had the Cheese-rite with mustard. I'm sure my dad would tell you that it is wrong to eat one with cheese on it. He gets his extra juicy with mustard, pickles and onions. Mmmmm! So good! That root beer is out of sight as well:) I bought a t-shirt to commemorate my visit and picked up one for my boyfriend.
