I was looking for something close to my apartment, and the reviews for this place were really good so I thought I'd give it a shot. I had an amazing experience. I was a little skeptical of the reviews that said you're treated like family or an old friend. How can a hair salon be THAT friendly? But guess what?! It's true! Irek himself is just so friendly and enthusiastic you feel like you've been going to see him for years. Besides everyone here being super friendly, the service was also great. I love my hair cut. Best I've gotten in a long time. I decided to get my eyebrows done here too, and they've NEVER looked this good. Oh, and Irek threw in a deep conditioning treatment for me for free. Awesome! I have reviewed previously after my last visit, and wanted to throw in a review from my latest appointment. I am seriously BLOWN AWAY by the stunning work produced by Irek and Slawek. They truly are master artists in this industry! I cannot believe that they deliver this level of amazing service at the prices that are offered. I cannot recommend this salon enough. In all honesty, I have tried going to "ritzy" salons in the past, and have only been disappointed by the lack of personable staff and service. I have spent over $250 before on a cut/color service, and left the salon with "okay" results. Never did I return to that place, because there was absolutely no connection with the people. However, that is NOT the case with Irek Mar! The staff are absolutely personable, and I find myself feeling right at home whenever I visit this salon. Trust me when I say that every penny spent in this establishment is WORTH. IT. I posted a photo of my recent visit, and just look at the results! This is by far the best cut/color I've ever had. Best hair cut I've ever gotten, and I'm in my 30s. Previously, my hair had been feeling thin and lifeless. Irek took one look and saw I needed layers. All of a sudden, I had natural wave, volume, and easy to style hair. The environment isn't fancy, but it's comfortable and friendly, and has run on schedule every time I've been there. It's weighed heavily on me to write this review. I don't like to complain and want to give people the benefit of doubt.. maybe he had a bad day? Maybe he hadn't slept well (he consumed two Red Bull's while I was there)? Either way, he was not easy going or nice, and since he asked me for a yelp review on my way out I figure I should share about my experience. Irek Mar seemed super outgoing and was extremely talkative during my entire visit- but with everyone else in the salon. The only conversation he had with me was to consult about what I wanted done. I showed him example pictures of hair styles to which he said "don't show me these pictures of models who probably had their hair worked on for 5 hours by a whole team of people!" Then, later he "chit-chatted" by insulting me about the way I speak!! I also heard him insult an older woman who asked him what the proposed cut would look like on her- he replied "you'll look like an old lady". My color and cut took 3.5 hours. The highlights didn't show up and my hair had to be treated a second time with a toner. The guy who does color didn't say one word to me, and in fact seemed also like he was in a bad mood. The color took about 3 hours start to finish and was barley visible. The haircut that followed was approximately 20 minutes and was sloppy. Irek cut my hair while it was flipped over my face which I had never experienced before, and he didn't check for evenness or do any touch ups afterwards. He moved on to another customer before I was dried and styled. Again I waited. As Irek began to work on the next customer he asked me if I was going out that night. I wasn't, but I said yes because I sensed he just wanted to dry my hair without styling it and be done. After such a long wait (and lousy experience) I wasn't about to leave there without having my hair styled. So he called over the color stylist to finish. Reluctantly and, again without a word to me, he came over and dried my hair with a round brush and styled my hair a little with a flat iron. Irek gave a half- hearted apology for the long wait, but my visit wasn't prioritize at all. Several people came in and left while I waited, and I saw other women impatiently but politely wait as well. During my 3.5 hour visit I saw Irek leave three times for a smoke break and stop to eat a quick dinner. He seemed strung-out and overbooked that day. As I was leaving, he said he is the #1 European salon in Chicago but needs my help for a yelp review. I was shocked that he asked, but I just wanted to leave so I didn't bother to complain to him at that moment. All around, this was an unpleasant experience and a very sub-par job on my hair. I was so bummed. I will obviously not be returning and would never recommend this salon to my friends. I hope this review is helpful all-around. read more

It's hard to assign -- I'm going for 4 but I was bouncing between 3 and 4 for awhile. Pros: --Super close and convenient to where I live. --I've gone here to get a Brazilian wax a couple times -- It's cheap, fast and she does a great job. --I got a haircut recently -- He knows how to cut curly hair (not everybody does) and I walked out looking fabulous. --They're very friendly once you're in the actual salon. Cons: --Maybe a little too friendly? He introduced himself by kissing my hand...and also kissed the side of my head as I was leaving... --They take very little information for appts over the phone -- and they called me to change my appt the day of. It all worked out in the end, but it was still a little off-putting. --They seem a little understaffed -- two men were cutting, washing, coloring the hair of 5ish people at the same time while I was there. My haircut was still under an hour but there were definitely times I was either waiting on the couch or sitting under the drier for a long time. --I had purchased a Groupon for a haircut as I'd never gotten a haircut before (and, again, not everyone can cut curly hair) -- when I tried to use the Groupon to pay after my haircut they told me they had canceled their Groupon offer and tried to get me to cancel my Groupon voucher (I couldn't) and pay them directly. In the end they simply took a photo of it and sent me on my way. But, again, a little off-putting. Overall, pleased with their friendliness and my great haircut. Debating whether I'll be back again for haircuts in the future since they're a little pricey. read more

I'm beginning to think that most of the reviews for Irek are not from real clients. The salon is not very pleasant and both the shampoo chair and the other chair were extremely uncomfortable. I was never asked if I wanted something to drink - even water would have been nice. My haircut took forever and while my hair looked nice when the stylist was done the sign of a great cut is when I can style it. Exactly what I said I hated - bulk at the bottom - is exactly what I have. While I haven't loved all of my haircuts this falls in the disastrous category and will probably have to go somewhere else to get it fixed. read more

I came here because I bought a groupon; I am not disappointed at all! Conrad is the stylist who cut and styled my hair. He is so funny and had a great personally. He even bought me some wine drink as he was cutting my hair, which I absolutely loved. He definetly knew what he was doing! He said he's been cutting hair for 20 years or so and I can for sure tell by the way he was handling my hair. He made my hair so volumous, which is something I've been trying to do forever! My hair has a natural curl to it and he cut it perfect and gave me some tips as well. I had an amazing experience at Irek Mar salon! It was recommended to me by a friend after I complemented her new haircut and color. I was greeted like an old friend and attended to the entire time. Watching Slawi (the colorist) and Irek (the stylist) work on me was like watching an artist paint a masterpiece. While waiting for my color to set, Aga touched up my eyebrows - a little henna and hot wax - they have never looked better! I have been receiving complements all through the week so far and they keep on coming. I absolutely love the spa. Agnes the esthetician is really knowledgable. I've gone to her with numerous beauty needs from facials, eyebrow waxing all the way to make up application. She is amazing. I will never go anywhere else. The best part about Irek Mar Salon and Spa is the fact that I could go in there completely unraveled and come out ready for a night out. Love, love, love that place. I would not recommend this salon. I have never felt so ignored and out of place. I even forgot I was the paying customer because of how rude everyone was to me and how I kept apologizing for "being in the way." I arrived 5 minutes before my scheduled appointment time and everyone just stared at me blankly. Finally someone told me to have a seat. Purses and coats were thrown everyone. Everyone (stylists and customers) were speaking Polish and completely ignoring me. Not to mention I didn't sit down in the chair until 40 minutes after my scheduled appointment time. Oh and did I mention he was smoking an e-cigarette inside while cutting hair. He also left to go to the bank after I had already been waiting for 40 minutes... Only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because my consultation was good & the stylist appeared to know what he was doing. Execution was so-so. read more

I came here for the first time on Thursday, 11/06/2014, and Konrad cut my hair. He was absolutely fantastic -- friendly, listened to what I wanted, but made great recommendations based on my hair. The style he did afterwards was amazing too! I went out of town for a wedding this past weekend and tried to have a different stylist recreate it, but no luck. I wished I could have taken Konrad with me! I will be back again in a few weeks. Update on 3/2/15: I went back this weekend to have my hair cut and colored with Konrad. Unfortunately, Konrad was unable to make it and I didn't get the message. However -- the other stylists at the salon fit me in, and I had a wonderful experience with them! I will still be going back to Konrad, but it seems like you'll have luck and fantastic service with any stylist here. read more

I called one morning to make an appointment for eyebrows. A woman picked up, she quickly said that she will send me a message with the phone number to the make-up artist and she hanged up the phone! Very unprofessional. I made the appointment for the same day. I came in and one word can describe everything: chaos. Nobody greets you, nobody takes your coat. There is nowhere to sit because there are other people's coats on the couches. So I had to move someone's coat myself and I waited for my appointment and observed. When I am at the hair salon, spa etc. I want to relax and music would big a big plus. There was no music but later on someone turned on a techno music that was coming from the little speaker on one wall. What? I've never heard a techno music at the hair salon. I can go to the club for that. There was no team work, no focus on the customer. One of the hair stylist was streightening her hair next to her customer. Again: unprofessional. The make-up artist was very nice and she had her own little room and relaxing music. However, I felt like she was rushing through my appointment and when I got home I saw how asymmetrically my eyebrows were done. Plus, the tint didn't last more than few days. I will give her another chance because she was very nice and I hope the quality will be there. So maybe I am just accustomed to a great customer service at my hair salon and this hair salon didn't live up to my expectations. Whatever it is, they must work on their customer service skills ! read more
