Wow! We've spent a good chunk of change here since my wife and I were dating, but no more. Unreal, just read a review from December 2 which echoes our experience. I went in to refresh my wife's supply of Inis Arose perfume, but they only had some other version. I took a chance at a new scent. My wife opened, gave it a smell and did not like it. Nbd right? Wrong. My wife went there to return/exchange and was treated like $hit by the super rude female employee. Both my wife and I wrote the owner, took about a few weeks to respond btw. He finally responded stating that since he wasn't present and the employee challenged the narrative of the story, that he couldn't possibly comment on that, but he wanted to focus on the return instead. Get ready! He said that they keep several testers of perfume in their store and if she wanted to smell it, she should've simply driven the 1/2 hour (with two kids under 4 in winter) and used the testers. Since she opened it to smell it (gasp! The horror!) that he couldn't take it back and then actually stated, "sorry to have lost your business over this incident." Not an ounce of customer service, what an absolute $hit show of a business. We both have ample retail experience and our families have owned multiple businesses including franchises, and never ever would any one of our customers be dismissed in this manner. A new Irish-themed gift shop has opened in Portsmouth, right in Market Square. Now there's a new place to pick up your gifts, jewelry, music, and other Irish goodies. It's very close to RiRa's Irish Pub, so you can really get into it. Interestingly, this new store is just a few blocks from Celtic Crossing, a store that's had this niche covered for the last 10 years. Can Portsmouth support both stores? We'll see. Ireland on the Square is a bit more focused on Ireland, and Celtic Crossing covers all of the Celtic areas including Ireland. I don't have a preference. Can I give no stars? What a horrible experience.. While I tried to email this business to give them an opportunity to respond and discuss a recent horrifying experience at their store privately, but they failed to respond after 2 weeks, so here we are. Absolutely horrible and cruel experience with an employee who will surely put them out of business if she continues to represent the store. The employee was nasty , rude, insulting, literally yelling and making snarky comments and completely unaware of proper retail etiquette while attempting to exchange an item, as well as make several additional purchases. Stupid move on her behalf, because she lost a huge order of mine, and I have told all my friends to AVOID this store like the plague. As an owner of a business myself, I would want to know if my staff was rude to customers, which is why I emailed the store in the first place before posting here out of respect to the fact that owning a business especially in a post Covid world is challenging , but they don't even care to respond. Unless of course the disrespectful, abhorrent staff member I dealt with was the owner herself, and deleted my email. I came here once and will never return because of the rude, aggressive attitude of the older female store clerk. When I asked if I could return an item I had bought over the phone (I had not been informed of the store's store-credit-only return policy when buying it), she reached over the counter and picked up a little sign and said, "The store policy is here, right where it should be." She offered no apologies and acted like I should have known better. She also made me feel like an irritating nuisance when I asked questions about products, reluctantly giving short answers, appearing impatient even though I was the only shopper in the store and she was seated behind the counter. read more

Was very disappointed by the unprofessional, rude, attitude of lady that was working on this past Sunday December 2nd. We were looking at certain items and when we asked for clarification she ignored us and then finally she addressed us and made up invalid excuses about the product, availability, and cost. Basically we had items in hand ready to purchase and by her inappropriate behavior and responses we left the store without buying the items. As customers we felt disrespected and frustrated. Hopefully, management is dealing with this poor customer service employee to repair the damages she's causing by losing purchases and repeat customers. read more

Clean store in a great location with quality products from Ireland. Many stores will "supposedly" sell products from Ireland Having been to Ireland and, specifically, to locations where their products came from, I know this is a legitimate store selling quality goods from Ireland. Great products, however the blonde staff lady was pretty darn rude both times we were in the store. We honestly didn't notice the size we needed to exchange for and she made fun of us for it. Saying "Wow, it was right there where the mediums were." Won't be shopping there again. Also, the websites for these products were about $20 to $30 cheaper. read more

Bad return policy, make sure you really want what you buy or that whoever you buy it for will like shopping there. We spent $150 on items for Christmas and the owner refused to give us our money back. His only response was "how do you expect us to stay in business" in a gruff and confrontational tone. Other then trying to recoup my loss at some occasion I will never shop there again. They evidently don't see the long term customer relation picture. Cute store. You always find these types of stores along the coast of New England. This was a real cute/small shop. It had the usual selection of European chocolates, some frozen food in a fridge in the back, ties, shirts, hats. They were having a huge sale on sweaters (end of the season, folks!). The hats were really cool and a little expensive ($40 or so) but that's what you get for these types of imported goods! read more

No food or drink allowed, but dog friendly? So dogs can be trusted, but if you go in there with a covered ice coffee they'll tell you to leave. They must have made so much money already that they can turn away customers. Went to The Celtic store down the street and got what I needed and didn't have to throw out my coffee to do so. read more

This is a great Irish store.. they have everything you could be looking for, from food to clothes to Belleek and other fine china. I like coming in here for unique Christmas presents. I got my mom a gorgeous ornament last year that had a little scene inside. I also love checking out all the yummy snacks, tea, and the jewelry! The staff members are helpful but they're not all over you when you're in there and I like that. The atmosphere of the store is cute and beautiful, and it is well organized. Incredible assortment of goodies from Ireland! I was tempted by many items: the beautiful silver jewelry, the Irish dishes, the interesting selection of food... but, the prices were out of this world high. $8.85 for a tiny box of Irish Muesli. Over $60 for a simple silver pendant. I wish I could afford to splurge like that! I know it's imported from Ireland and I know that's not cheap, but the mark-up seemed a little more than what's necessary to me. If I absolutely had to have an Irish gift then maybe this would be a great place, and I'd probably find it. Just browsing though it's fun but the prices kept me from buying anything. read more

I thought this was a cute shop. They have some nice things and definitely stock authentic Irish goods (I was delighted to find some candies I haven't had since I was a child when we lived there for a brief time). However I became very disappointed in the store after receiving a gift from there. My husband bought me a ring I had been wanting for years to replace a lost one, but bought the wrong size...they wouldn't exchange it for a smaller size. Now we are just out hundreds of dollars for a ring that won't fit. Be sure to ask their exact return policy before buying anything expensive there...I'm certain it wasn't explained to my husband at the time of purchase or we could have avoided this whole disaster. read more

I make a pit stop here nearly every time I'm exploring downtown Portsmouth for the sole purpose of stocking up on their amazing imported Cadbury candy. Chocolate in the US simply cannot compare. It is pricey, but since everything is imported, I'm willing to spend the money on something I really can't get at many other places in the area.
