Claudia's home is on a quiet street in Port Townsend. A generous yard has sturdy fencing. Dogs are really her guests. The home is filled with toys and dog beds, but dogs have free access to beds and other furniture. They get several walks a day, and (if you like) photo updates come throughout the stay. When we picked up our high energy 13-month-old Northwest Farm Terrier, Marley, was relaxed and clearly at home. It's revealing that after our initial visit to get to know one-another, Marley would whimper and pull at her leash TOWARD Happy Paws. She loves it! Claudia has made a point of studying dogs. She believes only in positive re-enforcement, and makes it clear that this is a resort for dogs, not a training kennel. A look at her website reveals so much about her approach and philosophy toward companion animals. We will certainly return, secure in the knowledge that Marley will be happy and well cared for. My only reservation in writing this review is that she will become too popular. We'd like to keep Happy Paws for ourselves!

We came to get our 2 bags of K9 food and our bag of cat food and was told by the man behind the counter that only active service members are going to receive the 5% discount. My wife nor I have heard of only active service members receiving a discount at any store. The man was kind in regards to not giving us the discount and stated that it was something which had been in effect for quite some time so he seemed as confused about our situation as we were. If it weren't for the fact that this place is one of the few places that sell the brand Prey for dog food we'd stop coming here because we get a veteran's discount everywhere else we have shopped for dog food. I am sad that a local place, which is part of a close community of Port Townsend, doesn't offer a discount to those who have served for our country in the military along with active members. So if you are expecting to receive a veteran's discount (or have in the past), then this is a headsup that the discount doesn't apply. When they passed, Susan was so kind and thoughtful - sharing memories with me. When I brought home two new rescues - she was so excited for me - and excited to meet them. As my dog grows older and more fragile, she shows such compassion - making me so grateful to have her in our lives. She has always gone well above and beyond, making sure to send adorable pictures of 'my boys' when I travel, and update her notebook with details from each visit. When she needs to take some time off (very rare, and always with a lot of notice), she coordinates substitute pet minders as needed. Her experience working for a vet just adds to my comfort in leaving my pets in her care. When my pets need pills or special care, she works with me to make sure all is administered if I'm not available. I have recommended her to three different friends, and they each speak glowingly about her service. She will work with folks for regular visits, or for vacation care.

For the past two years I have been grooming the boys myself to save the money. It's been a fun learning experience and I definitely saved a bunch of cash but I found that having a professional groom them, at least once in a while, has other benefits. For starters, Sheila noticed that one of my dogs has a fungus in his ear. I had thought it was gone so her noticing this helped me get him back on track. I'm avoiding steroids and expensive veterinarian fees and using things like oil of oregano and dietary changes (NO SUGARS) instead. It's been working but I was hesitant to pull the hair out of his ear. Sheila did this and noticed that the fungus is still there and needs more attention. She short clipped them, as asked, and did a great job around their faces. For some reason in the past groomers have not really paid good attention to their faces and it was so nice to really see their little eyes again. She also took care of their anal glands, again, something I'm not able to do on my own. I really appreciated the way Sheila took her time with my dogs, noticed more than just their visual appearance and went over and beyond what most groomers would do, even though she clearly has a full load.
