We hired Irish Sweeps Chimney to diagnose and repair a leak. At first everything went great and I would have agreed with all these other wonderful reviews. Dom was knowledgeable, kind, and professional. He got the work done fast and took photos for us. Here's where things went wrong: In our consultation with Dom he told us our chimney needed to be relined and repointed. He quoted us $3,600 but told us if we paid cash it would be significantly less. Cash would bring the total down to $2,900. We're new home owners and have been spending quite a bit to fix the place up, so naturally we jumped at the lower price. We paid cash in full. Before Dom left he notified us that he didn't have time to repoint the chimney but he would come back over the weekend. He never came back. We called and texted him multiple times over the course of a month. He would set dates with us and then no show. Eventually we called the owner of Irish Sweeps Chimney and at first he promised to make it right. Then he said he couldn't do anything without proof money was exchanged. Dom didn't give us a receipt for the cash we gave him so it was our word against his. We have multiple texts and calls from him promising to come finish the job but it wasn't enough. I understand why the owner would side with his employee, but it's very disappointing that this happened in the first place. We paid him thousands and even tipped him. In retrospect was it a little stupid to not get a receipt? Yes, for sure. However based on the stellar reviews, Dom's charm, and his promise to come back, I didn't think much of it at the time. We put our trust into a company we thought was reputable and one awful employee took advantage of that. I had a problem with my chimney damper where it fell into the chimney and was inoperable. I had received a quote from another unscrupulous company at $750 along with some long winded fabrication of what "needed" to be done. While I am no chimney expert, the explanation was suspect and I did not feel comfortable with the estimate. I placed a call to Irish Sweeps and Brian H. arrived at my home and proceeded to give me an upfront honest assessment of what needed to be done. He completed the job along with making another quick fix to a second chimney in my home which was completed in under and hour and ended up costing me $75. The work was done two years ago, but I'm still so happy with these guys that I want to review them here. Our longtime heating oil dealer told us that we needed to get the flue cleaned immediately due to insufficient draft. We contacted a local sweep with an excellent reputation. They inspected, and told us that the necessary work was beyond their capability because it would require cutting into the chimney from inside the house to get to the obstruction. They recommended we call Irish Sweeps, who they praised. Irish Sweeps is a small, family company, which has been around for decades. I was happy to see that they are members of the appropriate professional organizations and have an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Irish Sweeps sent Brian to do the inspection. Brian is smart, very kind and patient, and knows his business. After inspecting everything, he explained that the best way to get into the boiler chimney was through the firebox of our main fireplace, because that could easily be restored to pristine condition, as opposed to cutting though our walls. While he was here, I mentioned that we had had some water infiltration from around an unused chimney, and that a contractor had said that it should be demolished and rebuilt. He had a look, and said that much of the chimney was pretty tight, but it did need to be repointed (replacing the mortar that had fallen away) and that there were obvious defects in the flashing. He proposed to repoint all three chimneys, rebuild the masonry "crowns" on them, and fix the flashing on the one that was leaking. They proposed a price that was totally-fair for high-quality work. On the appointed day, their crew arrived on time - four men in two trucks, led by Brian, and they immediately set to work. I appreciated that Brian made an effort to minimize traffic through the house. He also made a point to prepare the area inside the house with dropcloths all around, and asked first before moving anything. I realized how an experienced company can handle things with minimal involvement by me. I didn't have to point out anything to them in the basement about our boiler and oil-fired hot water heater. They found the cutoff switches for all of that on their own, turning it off before opening the flue and all back on and running as soon as it was safe to do so. They also found the necessary water spigots and electrical sockets outside. Brian and another man cleaned out our main fireplace, and then set to work opening a hole in that fireplace into the adjacent chimney, while the other two men went to work on the roof. On a very hot day, they worked tirelessly to wire-brush the bricks on the chimneys so they looked much nicer, and then repointed everywhere that needed it. Clearly this was necessary: as I was looking at them work, I happened to notice one of the men just pull a brick from one chimney by hand, because there was nothing holding it in place. Despite this, Brian assured me that the chimneys were solid, except for the necessary repointing. (He could have easily told me, as a roofing company did, that one chimney needed to be demolished and rebuilt: that little demonstration with the brick might have convinced me, so I appreciate Brian's honesty.) The chimneys look very nice now, particularly with the new crowns on each. Irish Sweeps spent a long time reworking the flashing on the leaking chimney, which solved that infiltration problem. On the furnace flue, Irish Sweeps removed two huge wet/dry vacuum cleaner bags of crud - probably 30 years of debris -- through the hole they cut in our fireplace, and then restored it so that you literally can't tell they ever cut into it. Our boiler flue now flows perfectly. In short, four guys spent two days of nonstop hard work at the house, were thoughtful, kind and professional, did an outstanding job, left the work areas spotless, didn't try to sell us anything that we didn't need, and charged a fair price. It doesn't get better than that. They are welcome in our home anytime. read more

Used for the first time. Was told our chimney was "falling apart" and needed $3k in repairs. In addition they tried to claim a large piece of plastic was in the chimney and we were doing a lot of damage by burning plastic. Unfortunately (for them) we have cameras everywhere and saw them bring the plastic in from their van and we never burn plastic. They have not stood by the work they have done. I had smoke pouring into the house from the fireplace. I spent $1,500 with them to repoint and rebuild the chimney top, and slip a liner down the chimney. They claimed the top of the chimney was porous and that this was the likely cause of the smoke problems. The work was done and appeared satisfactory. 6 Months later I got a chance to light a fire and the problem is the same. After 5 calls and leaving messages over the course of 5 weeks they have not returned my calls. All I expected was for them to come back and look at it and let me know how we can solve the problem. It appears they do not stand by their work and have avoided dealing with me. I would not recommend them at this point. read more

I was having a serious problem with smoke pouring into the house whenever I used my fireplace. I called Irish Chimney sweeps and was told that there were rotting issues with the cap and the top of the chimney and that a whole new piece needed to be fabricated to fix this issue and that we also needed a new damper. I spent $ 1,500.00 and still have A LOT of smoke in the house (so much smoke that the back door needs to be left open several inches whenever the fireplace is on).
