While up north, I knew I wanted to swing by Iron Fish to purchase some bottles of bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup (it's reason alone to go). My party suggested we stick around for dinner too, which I wasn't going to object to. I wasn't surprised to hear that we'd have a 35-minute wait on a Saturday. The staff was very accommodating and offered an empty room upstairs to wait and pass the time with some games. We asked if we could order some cocktails, and luckily the answer was yes. We placed an order with the hostess, and she brought those upstairs. Later, when there was a Shirley Temple spill, staff was gracious and whipped up another drink right away. Hospitality deserves five stars alone. What else deserves five stars? The cocktails of course. I had two "hotties," which were perfect with the wintry weather...and smart thinking. Who really wants a cold drink in January? The menu is simple, and much of the food is locally-sourced (huzzah). I vegetarian-ized the Christmas Dinner pizza, and it needed the saltiness/fatiness of the sausage. Still, I'll give points for creativity. Four stars. I get destination vibes from this spot, and I know I'll need to return in the summer months for the most optimal experience...but I was overall impressed with my winter trip. I absolutely love this distillery! While the cocktails are top-notch--the Old Fashioned and Manhattan I had on my last visit were perfectly balanced--the food actually stole the show. I tried the Spring Chicken pizza, and it's easily my new favorite. The combination of lemon olive oil, smoked chicken, and that pesto ricotta soprafina is incredible. I was really underwhelmed with this restaurant. First of all, I am a big fan if the Iron Fish liquor and was excited for the tour. We had a large group of twelve. When we got there the restaurant was not super busy but the hostess would not let us reserve a table for right after the tasting. Seems a little silly not to serve any food with a liquor tasting and maybe not even get a table to eat before driving home. The hostess said "it's a gamble" . She was highly dismissive and not a great first impression. Rules are rules there are different ways to deliver them. Then it took almost twenty minutes for each person to pay for the tour because they have one iPad where they manually type in your credit card info. Alas, the tour itself was interesting. The wedding/ party venue onsite looks awesome. The whiskey tasting itself was excellent. Definitely could have used some appetizers or even peanuts. We were in good spirits! Luckily we did secure a table after our friends not on the tour waited an hour to be seated. Several of us ordered the pulled pork sandwich and it was super dry. The burrata and seasonal soup got rave reviews. My old fashioned was superb. Our waitress was a sweetheart and had enormous patience with such a large group of very loud ladies. I left with two bottles of Stout whiskey. Recommend the liquor but the restaurant is just ok. read more

We were on the girls trip and booked this place for a distillery tour. Great family owned place with rustic decor. Consists of a distillery, restaurant and a small shop where you can try samples of whiskey, bourbon, vodka and gin distilled on the premisses, also have some cool merch. Distillery tour was alot of fun tried all kinds of liquors and tour guide was great and informative. Restaurant was a let down since we had 12 people party and 6 did the tour, the rest of the group had to arrive an hour earlier to secure a table, they would not book us a table for after the tour. That would of been convenient. Food it self was a hit and miss. Our server was great but the hostess was just rude and indifferent about the whole reservation situation. read more

What a perfect hidden gem out in rural Springdale Township! The food here was amazing as were the drinks. It was a gorgeous day and we were lucky enough to eat outside. They have a great tasting bar in the silo shaped building right outside the door from the main restaurant, that also sells the small batch spirits they have produced. And while the food, the space and the service were all amazing, My favorite part is the commitment for sustainable farming and production of their spirits. What a beautiful little spot in the middle of farmland! The ambiance was great with live music and lots of seating options. The grounds and buildings are beautiful. We had limited time so we did a quick free tasting and then ordered cocktails. The cocktails (3 of them) took nearly 30 minutes, so we felt pretty rushed to finish them. If you come, make sure you have plenty of time and if you want an alcoholic drink you better like liquor because that's all they have. Went here last night, food was good. Service? Not so much. First, we got sat down, there was live music, sounded good. But it was way too loud, I couldn't hear anyone at my table. Then, after like 10 minutes a waiter came up and asked what we were eating, nobody ever came and got our drink order. Whatever I guess. But when I asked for a different side then potato chips i got a very rude and stern NO. That was annoying. Food came out and it took FOREVER. Food portions, very small. My friends and I came here hoping to have a good time, but instead we were treated with unnecessary disrespect. For reasons that were never explained to us, we were denied service at the bar--no drinks, no explanation, no justification. We were calm, respectful, and simply trying to enjoy our night like everyone else. Being refused service without any cause or communication was frustrating and embarrassing. This was a happy find - a little sad because they ran out of bacon spinach dip but drinks made up for it. Definitely a good vibe feeling and to top it off - it's dog friendly. There's multiple seating options inside and out but please note if there's only two people at the picnic table then there's a high possibility you might be paired with another couple. What a cool place with AMAZING food, and AWESOME drink variety! I normally don't quite fit in at distilleries like this, because I'm not a whiskey drinker, so there isn't much for me to choose from, but Iron Fish has a variety of different spirits available which is a GAME CHANGER! I got to enjoy a cocktail along with my friends who were more interested in the whiskey. We went for lunch and had the most DELICIOUS dips and an UNBELIEVABLE bruschetta appetizers! I haven't been able to stop thinking about them! A couple of us got pizzas which were so good, and I had the soup of the day which was exactly what I was hoping for! Our waiter was a hoot, and the place itself is VERY cool. Love the vibe, love the space! This place it awesome. It is in the middle of nowhere and will make you question where you are going... but keep going because it's awesome. This place is pet friendly (keep your dog on a leash). Limited menu but the pizza is good and there is a hamburger food truck. Lots of Iron Fish liquor available; good selection of whiskey, vodka and gin. There was a DJ while we were there. It's located down a dirt road in the boonies of northwest Michigan, a few minutes behind Crystal Mountain Ski & Spa Resort. Picturesque country scenery and they definitely designed Iron Fish just as you would imagine it. We were able to hit this place right when they opened (ok actually 15 minutes before but super accommodating while we waited) so the crowds weren't there but word on the street is that this place is hoppin' during the peak drinking times. Every time we are in town we make sure to stop by Iron Fish. The drinks are delicious and the food is always a great surprise. Pizzas are fantastic here but so are the apps and salads. To get to the place you take this dirt road to a wide open spot with many outdoor tables and the distillery, small gift shop, and building with a kitchen, bar, and a few tables. It's so scenic, and there was a heated outdoor tent to accommodate the cool October days. We got a table in the heated tent. The menu had several classic cocktails and seasonal ones with a lean toward old fashions. The first one I ordered was a spot suit old fashioned - w/gin (rosemary syrup, cherry, bitters, and lemon peel). It was different and interesting. My husband and and I preferred the more traditional cocktails with a twist---one with maple and sea salt and their classic. They have a small menu, but we didn't order any food.I can imagine this place is a magnet during the summer high season as it was fairly busy for a late afternoon Friday in mid-October. What a fantastic place! Came on a Sunday shortly after they opened. The staff were very friendly and accommodating to a party of one! I have to thank Bernie for being so fantastic! They have a great selection of cocktails, pizzas, appetizers, sandwiches and desserts. I started with a Bloody Mary. They give you a selection of flavors, and I chose the basil jalapeño Bloody Mary. Flavors were nice and fresh. I didn't find it overly spicy, and there was a tad too much basil. I think I'll go with the horseradish next time! I ordered the whitefish pate as my appetizer. It was delicious! I loved the crackers and green apples that came with it. I also had the the rhubarb old fashioned. Amazing! They have a little shop where you can buy all their spirits. We love Iron Fish. Always a stop for us on our way up north. They have top notch wood fired pizza which is what we usually get and got there today. The whole family loves them. The cocktails are great. I had the toasted godfather and my wife had the Wily E Coyote. Both were very enjoyable. The service was fast. We ate inside but they have outdoor igloos if you're interested. In the summer we always eat outside. And you can grab a few free tastings and a bottle in the tasting silo on your way out. We visited recently because I'd tried their products (maple rye and Copper Queen) and we have relatives in Traverse City. On the drive there we almost questioned GPS and turned back. So glad we didn't!! What a delightful place in the middle of nowhere!! (Literally, their gin is called 'Slightly Lost'). We started with one of the best old fashioned I've had and my wife had 'Snow Covered Dunes'. Excellent. We ordered the 'Meat Sweats' smoked meat platter and were amazed. We've enjoyed smoked meat all over the country and this was up there with the best. Bottles of Four Cask Whiskey and Bourbon finished in Imperial Stout casks followed me home and I intend to enjoy them for a while. Fortunately my local bottle shops carry both.
