Spectacular view from the penthouse studio http://ow.ly/nKIKe
    Janna V.

We recently spent a long weekend at the Iron Horse Resort and it was perfect! We rented a penthouse studio ( http://ow.ly/nKIKe ) with a view of the pool and mountains! The room was clean and nicely furnished. The owner was responsive, friendly and provided a wealth of information for newbies to the Winter Park area. The pool and hot tub area were the perfect, relaxing hang-out for the family. Winter Park Village (with plenty to keep the whole family busy for the whole weekend) is an easy walk down the ski-out access trail. Love, love, love! We can't wait to come back!

We came to celebrate our 7 year anniversary. Donna and Brian were so thoughtful and professional. They made sure we had everything we needed and wanted for our stay. Breakfast each morning was so delicious. Donna could have made it as a professional chef! We stayed in a dog friendly cabin, what fun to bring along our pup! Cabin was cozy, warm and the snow was shoveled each day for us.

The xc skiing at Devil's Thumb has always been a favorite for us, as far back as the 70's when it was just a rustic ski trail system with a small nordic supply shop. In recent years it became a full fledged resort with lodging where we have often stayed. We have also stayed in Winter Park, about 15 minutes away and driven over to ski. But we have now found our new favorite option. This is such a lovely place, both the facility and the charming staff. It is a better price value for us than some of the other options in the area, yet more than a simple motel in town. You know, like Goldilocks, "just right." I especially want to note that the (included) breakfast that host John cooks for the guests was wonderful, some sweet, some savory, warm, homemade, natural and ample for the start of even an hearty ski day. They take note in advance of special food needs and serve with a choice of time options. The log style of the building is rustic but nicely furnished. The rooms are well designed and furnished with high quality linens and have lots of storage as some guests stay for weeks. The views from each room are very pretty, some to the Continental Divide, some to the woodland. Every single staff member was friendly and helpful. The central lounge area was large, comfortable, attractive and clean and with a central fireplace. There are also some other smaller gathering areas to sit and talk or read if you wish to be outside your room. And there are also some family and dog friendly cabins on site if you want more than a bedroom. Personally, the rooms in the main inn are just right for my needs. We will absolutely be back. It is convenient to local xc skiing and also just a 15 minute drive past the Winter Park Resort and not far at all from several quality dinner options. We met other guests using the lodging for all of these reasons.

We woke up in the morning before skiing and hiking and there was an amazing breakfast made on the table for us. Dinner was FANTASTIC! The first night we were there we had soup, salad, bread, steak, and two sides and to top it off DELICIOUS dessert. Every day breakfast and dinner was amazing - we didn't want to leave and come back to reality haha! Who wants to cook their own breakfast or dinner after a full day of skiing and activities? Not me!! They also have their own shuttle that takes you right to the Winter Park Ski lift. I have been coming to this lodge for years and I've never had one bad experience. The staff is also super friendly and helpful and the rooms were very cozy. Thank you Jeanine for such a great stay!

I think I found a new annual tradition that avoids the costly resorts while having the free shuttle convenience to take you right to the base of Winter Park Resort. Definitely coming back!

You can walk to every place within the town, easy to get in and out to the slopes, has a hot tub, free breakfast, weed shop in the back, and an owner that is extremely helpful. Thanks to Joe, I will be a long time customer. The price is good for this area and if you don't need a kitchen or have just 2-3 of you, this is a perfect spot. Ultimately I would have much preferred to have overnighted in the town of Grand Lake, Colorado...a lot closer to Rocky Mountain, NP. Unfortunately rooms were ultra expensive in that quaint little town, so I "bit the bullet" and drove 35 miles away to stay here in Winter Park. I spent $100 plus tax for a Friday night. I was pleasantly surprised how big the room was. Besides 2 queen sized beds, accommodations included a lounge chair, plenty of closet space and an extended area for the bathroom. The spaciousness of the room was absolutely the best part of the motel! I checked in relatively late evening (8pm) and there were no issues. Parking was free and right in the back of the building. Valley Hi is located in the center of Winter Park with plenty of options for food all over town. There is free continental breakfast and coffee offered in the morning with your stay but the following day I had a long drive and grabbed food on the road. Although I was ideally looking for accommodations within the confines of the western part of Rocky Mountain National Park, Valley Hi Motel was more than a suffice place to put my head down and rest for the evening. If you're exploring in the Winter Park/Fraser area, I'd give the green light to come here.

Rooms were clean and well maintained, and had all of the basics you would need. Everything related to a ski day was nice here - had storage for skis and boots so that you didn't have to bring them to your room. In the morning they have a nice spread for breakfast including fruit and cereal, and also have some hot items including eggs, toast, sausage, and bacon. Definitely enough to get you fueled and ready for the day. Then there is a van they run that takes you right to the gondola leaving at 8:30, 9, 9:30. Taking the first van gets you there right for the start of day. And you don't have to worry about parking, walking, and paying at the resort. Rides back were at 3:15 and 4:15 which gave plenty of time at the mountain. I didn't get a chance to try the hot tub but it looked nice. There were some cozy spots in the lounge with fireplaces to sit and relax. And a ping pong table that a few kids were using to stay entertained. Parking here was convenient, and the location is good; very close to everything in Winter Park. Overall I was very impressed with this stay. I will definitely look here first when looking for a place to stay in Winter Park moving forward. I thought it was a fair value, and the amenities made for easy ski days where all I had to do was get dressed and show up to the van on time, and not worry about anything else.
