Was headed east towards Columbus and planned a stop at Ironworks for some delicious Chicken & Waffles. Located inside the Market downtown Springfield, parking wasn't too bad, numerous vendors, and the lively atmosphere makes for a good vibe Upon entering the main hall it's an open food court concept where you seat yourself and choose from all kinds of venues, but I came for the Chicken & Waffles and they did not disappoint! The Chicken was flavorful, crunchy, yet tender on the inside. The Waffles were fluffy and light which quickly absorbed the delicious Bourbon Maple syrup. Great mix that was all washed down with a wheat beer and some Blantons, yes, Blantons (IYKYK)! There is a full bar inside the hall which completed the meal before he headed out to Columbus! I visited this location 3 times during my 3 day visit to Springfield as it was across the street from my hotel. Service was always with a smile, although fruit was forgotten on one occasion. While the coffee was never hot enough for me, the food was very tasty. I especially enjoyed the freshly prepared waffles. The bacon was perfectly crisp and the strawberries fresh. Eggs were also perfectly over medium and topped with cheddar cheese. One day I ordered hash browns that were crispy and right out of the fryer. This placed is tucked inside a building with 7-15 other restaurants! The line was long and went past some of the other places that offered food lol. This was a popular place and barley anywhere to sit/stand lol The waffles was ok I got them plain and they gave me a small serving of syrup and had to keep going back for syrup. This is such a delightful space! It was truly damn Delicious! I had waffle with fruit, plenty of strawberries and blueberries that I was still snacking on them after my waffle was gone. We've been driving cross country from California and I've been complaining about my coffees. When we get out of the woods I want to enjoy a latte or mocha. Well I kept saying how delighted I was with my pistachio latte so that my hubby ordered me another to go! We really we could had a crusty pizza lunch and back for a taco dinner and the bar. Today was our first visit to try their food, and we are excited that we did. They have a reasonable menu ( less than 10 items if I recall correctly.) I had the warder and must husband got the leige. I LOVE MINE! The waffles are thick and just the right texture.. not too airy but not brick dense. Eggs were done just right, and bacon not too crispy but not soggy. Thr waffle itself was not super sweet. My son, who had ate at home because he didnt like waffles usually, enjoyed the obligatory trying bite and actually had more! The waffles I believe come with a side, and i opted for hash brown square. We intend on returning and trying some of the other items. I stole pictures off their website of their menu currently. My husband and I went to this place after visiting the farmers market. The wait was a little long - not their fault obviously - but it was worth it. We were staying at the Marriott across the street and wandered over to check out COhatch since we're getting one in Indy soon. My sons tried the apple pie waffle and fruit waffle, and my husband and I had coffees. Both waffles were very good, fresh and filling, which I can attest to because I finished my sons' after they were both full. I liked the vibe of the dining room too with plenty of places to sit inside and out. We arrived close to opening but by the time 10AM rolled around the line was long and seating in the main dining room was full. We'd definitely go back when we're in Springfield again. read more

Iron skillet is my go to here of about 6 restaurants. Tremendous tender chicken, interesting combinations with sweet and savory options. I was impressed with the portions for the cost. I am quite impressed with their service, friendliness, and waffles! The liege waffle was AMAZING. We got a couple different waffles, a sandwich, and their Johnny Lytle. All were good, although, I will ask for the syrup on the side next time so it isn't on the soggy side when I got to my seat. We got the Davey Moore and The National Road. All we could say is .... We'll nothing because we were too busy stuffing our faces with this deeicious food. I have a very picky teen ... and if anyone knows anything about a child on the ASD scale, they know what I'm working with. He is especially particular about the flavor of syrup and the texture of the waffle. Half way through his waffle he said he was full .... Me and my partner got the bacon, egg, and cheese waffle sandwich. While this is such a great concept the egg was burnt and the bacon was too crispy and didn't leave much of a flavor to the overall sandwich. They put another sandwich up after ours where the bacon looked to be near perfection and the, fried rather than scrambled, looked great. I will say that the waffle was perfectly cooked and the cheese was melt and gooey. Not the perfect first impression, but I'm excited to try their other dishes including their take on chicken and waffles as well as their sweet dishes. Side Note: The location was in the middle of downtown Springfield and was quite amazing with its steel arches and wood beams. I love markets and places with this style of design. However, it's a building that crams 6 to 7 businesses in there and everyone seemed to flock to this location. Space was limited and everyone is trying to get a table when there are so few available. I've been here 3 times now and every time it has been great. The waffles are made in front on you and they have sweet or savory options. I ordered a chicken and waffle dish and all the different flavors went well together. They make the fried chicken with boneless chicken so it's easier to eat than places that use the wing or drumstick. The coffee is also very good, I recommend the hot Caramel latte. If there is a line, it does take a couple extra minutes to get your food but you can see everyone working hard and the taste is worth it. read more
