The Irwin Street Market is a small indoor market in Old Fourth Ward. An old building houses the entire market. I visited on a Saturday afternoon and there were only four businesses, that I could tell, in operation that day. They were: - Bell Street Burritos - JDR Delishery - Jake's Ice Cream - Hilda's These are all local businesses. Bell Street Burritos moved here after being forced off its former Westside space on Howell Mill to make way for an Advance Auto Parts. I quickly grew fond of Bell Street Burritos when it was in my neighborhood, so O4W should feel lucky to have it. I can't comment on this bakery since I didn't try anything from it except for a bite of one of their coconut treats. It was tasty. I believe Hilda's restaurant gets its bagels from JDR because I saw Hilda's staff walking back and forth between Hilda's and JDR with bagels. Jake's Ice Cream is a local, artisan, "gourmet" ice cream brand. It reminds me of High Road Craft Ice Cream, but not nearly as sophisticated or refined. Jake's Ice Cream stand is located directly across from the Delishery. You can get a cup/cone of ice cream (two scoops) for $3+ or in a waffle cone for $4+. Hilda's is a breakfast and brunch restaurant with sit-down service. I think the restaurant formerly known as Picnic has merged with Hilda's. The reason being, when we were seated at Hilda's, we were handed two menus: one for Hilda's and one for Picnic. Picnic is described on the menu as "comfort food, Southern style." I'm tempted to compare it to a junkyard, but it's not that bad. Maybe flea market is a better comparison, but still, it's not that bad either. Hopefully, you get the idea. The space is filled with old furniture and decor that is being re-used and re-purposed. The common area, where JDR and Jake's is located, is akin to a living room. People hang out on the couches, read books, work on their laptops, etc. I didn't confirm if there's free Wi-Fi, but I'd venture to guess there is. There's a covered patio out back. Bell Street and Hilda's have their own separate spaces, but you can sit and eat in the common area if you'd like. The folks who work here are nice, so that's a plus. Parking is free. There's a small paved parking lot in front and a small gravel lot in the back. Street parking is also available. Drainage is horrible in the parking lots, so be careful if it's raining. read more

Irwin Street Market is an interesting place. It has a few shops here. I say a rating of 3 because... compared to KSM & Sweet Auburn Market, I kind of left wanting to see MORE here. I just saw Jake's, O4W Pizza, and Doctah Mojo's Juice Clinic residing inside. Maybe I missed others??? As for parking - my bf and I got super duper lucky and found a spot right up front. VERY LIMITED PARKING. But free. I'd probably park at KSM's parking deck and walk on over. It may be an extra 5 min walk. Not too bad. Seating - there's indoor and outdoor seating. I like the set up here. Irwin's seating matches the # of people they'd probably see. Jake's has their own mini seating as well. The outdoor seating has a roof, which is a plus for rainy/hardcore sunny days. One of the newest shops, Doctah Mojo's Juice Clinic has a tiny mini bar for folks who just want to casually sit in front of them and chat with the owners. (who btw are super nice!) O4W Pizza - the main indoor seating is right in front of them. I'd say... maybe.. 6 tables? I came here on a Sunday at a random time, so it was empty. I can only imagine lots of folks coming by during peak hours. Overall - If you have small kids - I'd be careful with them walking around here. There's some stuff in the Market (it looks like decoration) that can look harmful.... but only if the kids are running around like crazy. And a neat place for a chill date night - food & dessert. The Irwin Street Market is sort of the treasure box which holds some very nice gems. It never occurred to me to rate this place only because I thought to try the individual places within. But the whole facility is worthy of note. It really is something of a neighborhood treasure itself. It's a good place to take a load off for a while--maybe grab some coffee, or a cookie, or some ice cream for a bit. You could also browse some pricey tchotchkes, collectibles, or antiques while you're there. So yeah, Irwin Street Market is home to some worthy dining institutions, and it's worth checking out just for fun. Plus, free wifi makes me very happy. Maybe I'll see you there? read more

Relatively hidden gem of a collective space! If more people knew about this place, it would be packed. The Irwin Street Market houses multiple local businesses -- ice cream, coffee shop, bagels, lunch and dinner counter, chocolatier, bakery, cooking classes, and a soup-maker. They all share one large, open space. Plenty of comfy seating. Free wireless. Well-lit. Live music every now and then. Great for anything you want to do -- study, eat, chill, read, whatever! As a student, I can tell you this place is great when you need to do work for hours on end. No crowds, and REAL food -- so that when you get hungry, you're not stuck with the same old coffee shop options (turkey sandwich, hummus, you know what I'm talking about). Definitely invest in making this a place you frequent. They're always working to make it even better. Seeing this place evolve over the past couple years has been pretty neat. read more

Living in the neighborhood and passing by Irwin Street Market several times a week is always a bit of a letdown. The few times we've been in have always left us with a "That's it?" kind of feeling and I can't imagine there is much that is keeping this place together... both in business or patronage... or structurally, for that matter. It seems that the market itself is waning on having sustainable vendors. BOB is no longer in the market, Ben's Brown Bag closed earlier this year as well, and it looks that several other businesses are leaving quickly. Not sure if that is a tell-tale sign for something happening. There is a sign on the front of the market that a new pizza place is slated to open, Old Fourth Ward Pizza, but I don't know much else. The crown jewel of the market is Jake's by and large. Their ice cream is great and they just moved into what was the space for BOB. It looks much more homogenized and more of a proper ice cream shop. I hope they do well. They are a fantastic local brand. The biggest downside to the market is the structural aspect and the decor. The place is just pretty junky. Not much attention to cleanliness, detail, and the oddly slanted floors make it feel rather unsafe. Our last visit was interesting as a large of group of visitors all noticed the irregularities in the floor. I wish it was endearing, but the entire vibe of the market is just pretty sad. Again, I'd really love to see this place flourish but it needs some serious help. It's a prime location and I hope that someone swoops in and turns it into something awesome. read more

This was the second time I came here to get pastries. Both times the customer service and the pastries weren't that good. I had gotten the snickerdoodle cheesecake pastry and had the peanut butter chocolate bar. But before I could even get the pastries, there was no one at the counter and I had to wait an insane amount of time for someone to finally assist me. Once someone finally did come, the young man was very clueless when we asked him questions about the flavors and I got the vibe that he didn't want to be there. I used to have a tradition after morning yoga class. The tradition involved going out with my yoga classmates right after class to eat something bad for us. The usual cuisine of choice was Mexican, but the tradition was also known to involve omelets, pancakes, veggie burgers and fries, gourmet chocolates, macaroni and cheese, chicken and cappuccino. Since relocating back to Atlanta and finding a new yoga studio where my new classmates didn't really seem too into this post-yoga splurging, I abandoned tradition and always just drove straight home to eat whatever healthier food I had in the house. Until today, that is. Today in yoga class, I was pretty proud of myself for even making it there since I was tired and maybe still feeling some of the residual alcohol in my system from the night before. I have to tell you, I am probably not the ideal yogi; I often set my intention to just make it through class and I usually spend all of shavasana thinking about what I am going to eat after class. Well, I did make it through class today and, since I was feeling pretty pleased with myself for this, I thought about the Irwin Street Market during shavasana - sort of a little treat. I had passed by the Irwin Street Market on my way to and from yoga class many times before but had never stopped, so I was excited to check it out today. Six mini cupcakes and a grilled cheese later, I think I may have found my new post-yoga class tradition! It's a very comfy, cozy place. There are several different vendors there each with their own little space. I immediately headed toward the Sweet Pockets section where the cupcakes lived. Sweet Pockets had eleven flavors of cupcakes on display and I chose to try six of them in the mini size. I have only eaten two of them so far but they were very good - the strawberry wawa had a strawberry filling and strawberry buttercream frosting, and the cookies n' cream did taste just like cookies n' cream ice cream. After procuring my sweets, I ventured to the Delectables counter where they have soup and make sandwiches, salads and smoothies. This is also where the Jake's ice cream is. I saw a lot of things on the menu that sounded good but I settled on the Three Cheeses sandwich with the side of black bean salad. The sandwich was basically a grilled cheese sandwich but with tomatoes and pesto (it said "basil" but I think that was the overly simplified version of it - it was pesto). It was very tasty and I inhaled the whole thing. I took it to go and one side of the sandwich (the pesto side) did get a little soggy, but I really think that would not have been the case if I had eaten it there. The black bean salad was very good, too. While I was waiting for my food, I explored the store and also the little rooms where you can eat your food if you are dining in. There were little tables spread throughout the rooms as well as sofas, chairs and books. It looked like a really fun place to hang out, with food or also just with a coffee. I also checked out several of the vendors and they had interesting things - fresh flowers as well as skin care and lots of little gift items, cards and candle-type things. There was a fun variety of stuff to look at. So, in conclusion, this is a fun little market with good food and it will soon become a regular post-yoga stop for me. Old traditions die hard. read more

What you probably don't know about Irwin Street Market... When you walk into the market you're greeted by a large, industrial but cozy room. The exterior walls host a variety of vendors: to your right is Flower Bar, beyond that is a woman who sells handmade soaps and beauty products, beyond that is another room with art, books and my favorite clever greeting cards on a spinning rack (you need to go yourself to see). In the main room continuing counter clockwise is a cupcake maker, a fabulous cookie bar and beyond that a coffee bar. That brings you around to the left side of the room and its anchor businesses: Jake's. There's another room to your left as you come in, hosting framed photography on the walls, comfy couches and more intimate lighting with two adjoining alcoves (one filled by warm morning sun) for privacy and conversation. Back in the main room, you'll find couches, armchairs and the family table flanking retro ovens being used as displays for other locally made wares. Admittedly, I didn't know much about Jake or his business adventures, and while I had patronized the Irwin Street Market (lunch at Jake's, flowers from Flower Bar for the housewarming, cupcakes from Button Cakes Bakery) I wasn't entirely clear on what was happening in the space, and hadn't given a lot of thought to the eclectic collection. A few weeks ago, I got the 411 straight from Jake's mouth. Simply stated, it isn't just the goal of the market, but the intent behind everything Jake does: to nurture and help local business grow. On the website for ISM, its declared as our neighborhood s urban artist market, and it is. It's an incubator for small business who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford a storefront, who wouldn't normally have the coaching and support of someone who has tried, stumbled, succeeded and found himself in the process. As someone with a unquenchable passion for small business and a soft spot for "the little guy", I'll be undoubtedly be spending more time at the market. Bonus: free wifi and loads of comfy spots to sit without loud-not-my-taste music rattling your thoughts out of your head. Perfect for plotting about and noodling your own business dreams, which you can see to fruition right there at the Irwin Street Market. It's been awhile since I stepped inside of Irwin street market, but I was having this craving for Jake's Tiramisu ice cream so I decided to drop on in. On my way to the ice cream display I noticed a large dining table beautifully set for a party of what looked like for 20 people. Thinking I was interrupting a private event, I quickly ordered my ice cream but my curiosity got the better of me-- I had to ask what the dinner party was for. And I'm really glad that I did, because the girl who scooped out my ice cream told me that it was Irwin Street Market's new concept--Sunday Supper. A five-course meal served family style with communal seating. For $25 per person ($12 for children under 12) you get served a variety of "southern cuisine" with the company of perfect strangers. The menu changes each week and today was the 2nd dinner ever hosted. I picked up a flyer that had today's menu-- Bread and butter pickles, deviled eggs blackhawk salad jambalaya with shrimp, chicken, and andouille sausage stewed okra and tomatoes roasted sweet potatoes ratatouille collard greens smithfield ham corn muffins, yeast rolls and butter mixed berry cobbler with whipped cream ice cream ice tea and coffee This sounds like you'd definitely be getting your money's worth. Right now this is reservation only and because it's so new, they don't guarantee a dinner every week cause they need to see if their seating will fill up first. But with a menu like this I'm sure that word will catch on quick. read more

Hard to miss when you're driving around the Inman Park/Krog Street areas. It's garishly bright and cheerful. This co-op style market has Jake's ice cream, cupcakes, flowers, t-shirts, photography, skin care products...and probably a few more things that have been added since my last visit. My favorite part of the market is the ice cream. This Jake's location has a full menu of sandwiches and such, but really why would you be getting anything other than the best ice cream in Atlanta? If they have "Breakfast in Bed" or "Delta's Delight" available, I can't recommend any other flavors more highly. There's wi-fi to keep you entertained while you're hanging out here and a decent amount of comfy seating in the side rooms off the main shopping area. Good place to read, hang out, or potentially get some work done if you're looking for a new place for teleworking. read more

Irwin Street Market is one of my favorite places to go in town. Living on my laptop has its perks and this is one of them. I love Irwin Street Market mostly because it's like the comforts of home, but not. There are tables and chairs like any other establishment, but sofas, and easy chairs, and fireplaces, and book shelves where you can go relax the day away, and maybe take a nap if you're not carelful. All of the vendors are friendly and helpful and are passionate about the things they do. The food is really good with great sandwiches and sides, and the ice cream is a great reward. My favorite spot is the sunroom up front where I can sit and work and people watch at the same time. This is a great place to enjoy after a long day at one of the local festivals. It's a family fun spot where all can enjoy. I highly recommend this spot to anyone in the city. Although I haven't been lately, I believe they have a patio that will be opening up soon, and Sunday dinners, where people come and eat a boarding style meal. read more

A collection of small businesses under one leaky metal roof, this brightly colored building will make your day. There are several vendors in the building, including Jake's Ice Cream, Flower Bar, Sweet Pockets, and Sally B's skin products. There are also local honeys, greeting cards, photography, and a gallery just getting underway. The relaxed atmosphere encourages you to grab something sweet and sit back in one of the rooms, perhaps play some chess, read a book, or surf the internet, since they have free wi-fi! Everyone is extremely friendly and the sunshine may make that cushy chair hard to resist. Unless a giant falcon takes down a squirrel in the parking lot! Which is exactly what happened when I was there... it took a minute to figure out what the loud thump of feathers and branches was. I jumped out of the chair and watched through the rain as the bird sat on its meal for a bit before flying off with treat in tow. Nature at its finest. read more

What a cute little place! I was a Jake's ice cream virgin until today and I have to say, it was yummy and I'll be back for more. They just came out with coconut base "nice cream" Healthy ice cream only a couple blocks from my work-I'm so happy. i also had their eggplant sandwich which had delicious goat cheese and some kind of homemade basil olive oil/pesto spread on it. Just what the doctor ordered for lunch. A little gourmet sprinkled on an otherwise dreary long work day. Try the nice cream! It's not often you find a place that offers non-dairy, non-soy, healthy creamy tasty ice cream. read more

Oh how I love this market. First, I am a fan of the neighborhood - O4W. Second, they have great little places inside to eat. Third, the place is just funky and fun and they have great seating to just sit inside and hang out. So the shops are: The Funky Monkey (coffee and hot chocolate) Jake's Ice Cream (OMG amazing flavors like Brown Shugah Vanilla, Salted Caramel, Hot Sexy Mexican) Bell Street Burritos (tacos, burritos, quesadillas) Plus a lunch counter, and now Hilda's (Breakfast/Brunch) I mean, you can get a little of everything here. This is one of the most odd establishments in the city. I work across the street, and in 3 years I have seen them try-out and switch concepts at least 5 times. It appears as though they can't seem to settle on one idea and stick with it. Also, their marketing and branding is all over the place. It's unfortunate because it's a prime location with a lot of foot traffic due to the beltline. It's a shame Bells' Burritos had to leave. Since Bell's left, everytime I stop in it's completely empty! I often wonder how they stay in business? PRO TIP: I can't fault them entirely because they make some of the best BAGELS in the city- if they are looking for one concept to focus on- this is it. They are baked fresh daily, and in a city with a horrible bagel selection, these REALLY stand out. The only issue is they really skimp on the cream cheese. Also, the service is super slow. Everyone working there seems to be in a constant daze. I wish they would get some homemade, flavored cream cheeses, and I'd eat their bagels all the time! read more

Over the course of my four day stay in Inman Park, I stopped at the Irwin Street Market twice: once for a King of Pops popsicle (chocolate sea salt, mmmm), and once for an espresso after a long day of walking around. There was a problem with the espresso machine - or perhaps with the guy operating it - so I stuck with coffee and a wee pastry, both of which were just fine. Spaces like the Irwin Street Market are what I like so much about small towns - or cities or neighborhoods that have seen better times. The Irwin Street Market is an allied family of vendors- a cafe, a coffeeshop, an ice cream counter, a designated community kitchen, and others - created with the explicit intent of nurturing local businesses. Great place with tons of comfy seating for weekday study sessions. Free WiFi, all the flavours of the food wheel (coffee, ice cream, chocolate truffles and soup), and friendly staff who let you settle in for multiple hours. I ended up snoozing on one of the couches in the sunlight after plowing through a BLT Fried Green Tomato sandwich (great idea) and a Red Velvet cupcake. Just like at Grandma's house except free WiFi. This indoor market is very welcoming at first. However, once inside, Bob's, the kabob cafe, was out of nearly everything (chicken, shrimp, vegetables, etc.) Anyways, I decided to not eat there. I chose to order some ice cream from Jake's instead of getting the scraps from Bob's. As I walked up to the counter, there was a DEAD ROACH ON THE FLOOR. I told the young lady and she came from behind the counter grabbed it up with a napkin and proceeded to ask what I wanted. I decided to not get ice cream either due to the lack of hand washing on her part. My experience here was less than satisfactory, I didn't get anything I wanted, saw a dead insect, and after witnessing the scooper grab it up and continue scooping ice cream without washing her hands.....THAT WAS ENOUGH! NEVER VISIT THIS ESTABLISHMENT! !! No telling how many live roaches are beneath the crevices if one was on the floor where customers order. read more

Comfort food that made it right! We ended up here after leaving Parish due to the TERRIBLE customer service. As we walked, I said to my friends "where is all that southern charm you always hear about because so far I've only run into employees with attitude." Honestly, I'm shocked by the lack of customer service I have experienced in Atlanta UNTIL, I walked into this spot. The gentleman who greeted us was warm, informative and interested in his customers. The place was empty which always makes me suspect but this place was quaint, on point and the food was very good. The menu was minimal but it's not about quantity but quality and their comfort food was solid! I would definitely go back. We finished up with the bakery on the way out and the employees there were top-notch too! Spend your money here! The food is yummy and the employees care. I went to the cooking school twice with my boyfriend for date night. The first time we took a class was June 28th. I surprised him for his birthday. We took the vegetarian and gluten-free class with Chef Nancy. Unfortunately, for Chef Nancy this was not a good day because nothing was working correctly and the power went out. The good thing was my boyfriend and I are very laid back and easy flowing so we were not too bothered about the situation. Once the power situation was figured out we were cooking cauliflower fritters and sauce to top it. It was supper fun and Chef Nancy was a trooper. She was great. Because the class got start a little late due to all the uncontrollable issues we were given a coupon to come back. We went to our second class on Saturday, 8/11 with Chef Jake, Key 2 Keto. This class was great too. I loved that after everyone prepared their specific part of the meal - we all sat down to eat together. We got to know the other people, share stories, and enjoy the fruit of our labor. We will definitely go back. I great place for a date night or just learn more about cooking. read more

Been here a couple of times and I am a fan. I get the fried green tomato sandwhich with goat cheese on it. Its yummy and I now don't have to drive out to the Fickle Pickle in Roswell to get this same combo. So here's the thing about Irwin Street Market. It seems to be a revolving door of businesses. For whatever reason. This is probably a plus for some and a minus for others. You could start to really like a place and then it's gone. Right now there is an ice cream shop (Jake's), doggie ice cream treats, and cooking classes. O4W Pizza just recently left. It is a little, no frills market and offers up small, local businesses (great). There is limited (free) parking in the front of the building. After dinner at zuma, we were left with a hankering for something sweet. Morrellis was a tad too far and we wanted a little more selection than inman perk could offer - so - to irwin street market we went! This was my first time, so I was a tad bewildered walking in (think large space, lots of counters). Still, once I the Jakes sign, I headed strait to the counter, and ordered a scoop each of canoli and red velvet (delish!!). Since we strolled in around 8:30 and the place was almost empty but the staff were very friendly and did not rush us one bit. We took our time in one of the back rooms, and it felt like enjoying dessert at a friend's house - very cozy and comfortable! read more

What happened?? I visited Irwin St. Market recently, because I used to be a fan when they had a location in Peachtree Hills (actually opened and closed in the same location twice). After it closed, I stopped going, because it wasn't convenient. I went to the Irwin Street Market, and was disappointed. The ice cream was the same, the the atmosphere was not. As some of the other post's have mentioned, there was crap everywhere. I couldn't tell if they were opening or going out of business. There used to be Jakes all over town, but they've all closed (P'tree Hills, Tower Records, Downtown Decatur, Midtown). read more

Went here early before Cooking School at Irwin Street to get a bite to eat before class. Besides the kind girls running the ice cream shop, it was difficult to figure out where to go in such a small place. To the left is Bob's, a kabob cafe. The employee was kind and willing, but let us know up front we are out of steak, chicken, shrimp, and on and on... We ordered what they had left, meatball Guido and one chicken Cobb. The chicken was very dry. The meatball was good. My husband chose a can drink from a tiny refrigerator - it was frozen solid. I chose a soda fountain. The coke was out of order. ??? The rest of the market was a ghost town except for students for the cooking school. (Check out my review of it.) The mocha coffee I ordered from the empty pastry counter was very good. But I would not recommend driving to the market for the experience. If I was walking/biking by, eh, maybe stop in for a coffee or ice cream. read more

DISGUSTING STATE OF CLEANLINESS! Immediately upon entering I was greeted by the sight of dead roaches in and on the door jams. I cannot tell exactly how many businesses are in the this mess but it didn't really matter. After being grossed out at the entrance to the building I went to the bathroom....YUUUUUCK! I have seen cleaner bathrooms in a truck stop! No soap, unkempt across the board, graffiti, dirt and filth everywhere. I just left. I hear the food is good at the market's various entities but the bugs at the door make me think they are probably elsewhere in the building (like the kitchens) and if I can't even use your bathroom without being disgusted do you really expect me to risk my health by eating your food? read more

A group of us paid for a cooking experience and drove for over an hour to get there. The chef (and the owner of the company) never showed up. Later, after I tried contacting him many times, I finally got him to email me back and he said sorry, and asked if we wanted to reschedule. I said, no...and that we (6 people) just wanted a refund. He said okay, but never sent us the refund. 10 months later and I am still trying to get a refund from this CROOK who tried hard as hell to evade me and ignore my calls/emails. If you book with this guy, be aware that you may never get your class, and you may certainly never see your money again! read more

Cute little neighborhood gem, with a small patio out front, lots of bikes parked outside, and a cozy common area inside. The market houses a few different businesses, comprising of a burrito joint, an ice cream shop, a brunch place and a coffee shop. I haven't been to all of them but the only one I would not recommend is the coffee shop- slow service, poor choice of ingredients (coffee being served was a package of lower end pre-ground coffee from the grocery store) and left field recipes- my chai latte was literally coffee, milk, with a little bit of prefab chai mix- making it taste like a watered down, cinnamon-y latte. I paid $4 for it and threw it out once i left the store- it just didnt work. So why the 4 stars despite my not stellar experience with the coffee shop (funky monkey?). The other businesses are fab, the atmosphere is great - both feel, staff and clientele- and location right next to the beltline A+. read more

It's definitely a cute spot, but I wish they would work on consistency (specific advertised foods/drinks are often not available) and CLEANLINESS. Some of those couches could use a steam clean for sure, and it just seems like it's not cleaned regularly. Very friendly staff and great concept. I just wish they offered more real food.
