It was wonderful spending time in the Decatur Square this weekend, which is located in the heart of downtown Decatur. It is said to be one of the Top 10 Best Public Squares in the USA for three years in a row! I believe it too. Everytime I visit here I get the same laid back feel I always get. This square looks like a beautiful picture out of a book. There's plenty of space for kids to run around, nice shaded trees and picnic tables to enjoy a packed lunch or pick up a lunch from the quaint restaurants lined around the square. I was in the square years ago and they were filming a movie here. A lot of popular movies and shows have been filmed here throughout the years. I love that there are good quality places to eat, all in one area within walking distance and ice cream shops too. I also love how friendly strangers smile at each other and everyone is doing there own thing. Sometimes there's music playing throughout the square which makes it a double delight. read more

This is a neat little plaza area located in the Decatur entertainment/shopping district. The square has a gazebo stage where they host weekly open mic, Decatur's Rock the Mic Karaoke Nights, and Lunchtime Jazz in the Square. There is also picnic tables on the Square's artificial grass. There are always some street performers playing there and the Square had a high police/security presence. There are some small pockets of green space here. I saw a lacrosse goal on one of the pockets The square is home to a couple of neat sculptures. The Confederate monument called "The Lost Cause", which was erected in 1908 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy was recently removed from the square and replaced with a statue of the late John Lewis. You will also find a sculpture of Commodore Steven Decatur. I recommend checking out the Flame of Freedom while you are there. The square is on a bed of artificial grass and concrete. It has a decent amount of illumination at night and is surrounded by the courthouse, bars, restaurants and an ice cream shop. This is a nice little chill spot to pass some time while hanging out in the shopping/business district. I really enjoyed my time at the square. It is secure, very clean and well maintained. This is a nice addition to the area and definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. read more

Decatur Square got an upgrade since I remember. I used to come during my childhood days with my elementary school. I came a few years ago and thought it was trendy and cute. I enjoyed walking around and just checking out the scenery. There's lots of places to eat around the area. Weekends is free parking. We parked at Chick-Fil-A. It's Sunday so it's closed and we saw others parking there too. I came recently with my family. My mom hasn't been here in many years and was amazed. During my teenage years, I would go to the Decatur library. It is probably still my fave library in Georgia. I haven't gone by recently cause I'm no longer a Dekalb County resident but I should check it out one day. 13/2020 read more

Decatur Square - Shopping Centers Near Me - Atlanta, Georgia

Outside of Atlanta city limits, Decatur Square is probably the most popular of the metro area's various historic downtown districts. It's quaint, home to many a neighborhood festival, and chock full of eclectic shops, businesses, and good-to-great bars and restaurants (the latter being my personal favorite). The center of the Square features an open, multicolor tile, enclosed space, illuminated at night by artsy blue and yellow column lamp posts. In the middle of this space is a small monument consisting of a globe and children flying around, Peter Pan style. Sometimes, steam emits upwards out of the structure, engulfing the globe and kids. The eastern part of the Square is where the Old DeKalb County Courthouse is located. Today, it's home to the DeKalb History Center Museum. It's also used as an event space. For example, Yelp held its Passport to Decatur Square launch party at the old courthouse in May 2012: http://www.yelp.com/biz/launch-party-yelps-passport-to-decatur-square-decatur. Outside the courthouse is the Decatur Square Gazebo and an eternal flame commemorating those who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Exterior building walls on the western side of the Square show off neat and colorful murals. Paper Plane, from the same owners as Victory, is known for its stellar and unique cocktails. Sapori di Napoli is the only place in the city that serves Neapolitan pizzas from an imported Acunto wood-burning oven. The restaurant provides an authentic Naples, Italy dining experience. You can park in the courthouse deck. It's free after 5pm on weekdays and free all weekend. Metered parking is enforced 8am-6pm with a two-hour time limit. My favorite city square. Along with the various events - Decatur Beer Fest, Book Festival, 4th of July, and many others - it's a cool place to hang. Lots of restaurants. Lots of pubs. And two ice cream joints - Jeni's and Butter & Cream. Parking can be an issue but only if you need to be close. I love Decatur Square (and its immediate vicinity) for its walkability, variety of businesses (i.e., bookstore, bars, pubs, restaurants, ice cream parlors, boutiques, coffee shops), and green space. My fellow Yelpers have listed many of the great eateries in Decatur Square, so I won't offer an exhaustive list, however, both ATs and I enjoy visiting Little Shop of Stories, Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream, Butter and Cream, Java Monkey, and Victory Sandwich Bar. (Older) AT is a huge fan of Mac McGee Irish Pub. I've enjoyed meals at Cakes & Ale, Café Alsace, and Leon's Full Service. There are so many other places that we need to check out. Now that we are a family, I think we enjoy strolling about with our kid even more, because everything is so amazing to him. I love the Decatur square. It's a perfect spot for a chill date night. During the winter, the Christmas lights are magical, in the summer they create a beach volleyball situation, and in the spring/fall, the weather is perfect. Need an outing with the family, come visit the square. There are many eateries to visit and so much room for the kiddos to run around. I came to the square to visit Sweet Melissa's but ended up walking around the area to take in the scenery. Marta is also near so if you are unable to drive, you can easily take the Marta up to the square. It's hard to beat Decatur for a more perfect square. It's not even because it's a great walkable area jammed with excellent places to eat/drink/be merry (because it has all that). It's really perfect because in addition to all the square has to offer, you realize you're in Decatur, which by itself is known for some really great places to eat, drink, and well, y'know. For the purposes of my review, the borders of the Decatur Square will be a little more relaxed, and i'll say the square is bordered by Church Street, E. Ponce de Leon Ave, and very loosely by Trinity street. You can attack the square from multiple angles. Here's a few of the restaurants on each border. Church Street Portion of the square: Leon's Full Service Butter and Cream Calle Latina Cakes & Ale East Ponce De Leon portion of the square Souper Jenny The Brick Store Pub Opposite Trinity Street portion of the square Iberian Pig The Square Pub Raging Burrito & Taco Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream Siam Thai Restaurant King of pops also hangs around the actual square as well In the center of the square is the Decatur station, which lets out right into an open area where you're quite literally surrounded by restaurants, and considering how walkable the square is, Marta is a perfect option for getting here. Lining the walkway of the square closest to the likes of Iberian pig are several tables outside for sitting, and on a warm day, these seats simply are great to pass the time Not convinced of Marta and still want to hold on to your car? No worries! The east court square (across from Brick store) has limited parking for free). There's also metered parking along East Ponce De Leon. Better still is on west Trinity street, there's a parking deck, that is free on the weekends (as is all parking in Decatur) and in the evenings after 6 pm (again, this includes metered street parking as well). Right next to the square is the Dekalb County Court house, which also has metered parking, and is much better to be outside of it than inside, trust me! So What if the actual square doesn't have anything for you? Walking distance pulls you to places like: Twain's Brew pub and billiards Grind house Killer burgers Parker's on Ponce (local steak house) Korean Bbq Taco (nicely flavored Korean/Latin fusion) Greene's (candy shop) Big Peach Running (shoe and running accessory store) Java Monkey (local coffee shop) The Yogurt Tap (Froyo) What, you want more? If you're on the active side and enjoy running, the Atlanta Track club typically has training runs that begin at Big peach running on certain weekdays at 6pm, and Saturday Mornings. Runners/trainers and you, weave in and out of the city, and neighborhoods. The same streets that are ran on also make excellent places to bike as well, as there's a lot of greenery and sites to see in Decatur. If you're an outdoor lover without the desire to run, several festivals, including the Decatur Arts festival, can be visited during specific times of the year I could write and write and write and write, but the Decatur Square and surrounding areas make for the type of experiences where you have to come back again and again. It's my Favorite city in Georgia, hands down, and I hope you pay Decatur a visit to see why I think so. Have fun! read more

Because its in the middle of some geat eateries and bars, its right next to Marta, and if you just want to sit down and have a quality conversation, you can do it right in the square! Some of my favorite spots to stop right off the square are Sushi Avenue, Jeni's Ice Cream, Brickstore Pub and just around the corner is Leon's Full Service. You definitely can make a day out of spot hopping! City of Decatur holds there events here like the Beer festival and Wine Festival. There is parking all around either via the street, some lots or the parking deck. Parking in Decatur is free after 6pm! I first went to Decatur Square in the 90's. At that time, it wasn't as developed as it is now. It was a quiet, little town square and kinda ghetto. Now, it's bustling with trendy bars and restaurants. One thing for sure is that parking has gotten worse. I used to be able to park for free at certain places. Now every little streets and parking spaces are pay only. And most of them only let you park for max 2 hours. Maybe that was needed because it was hard to find parking as Decatur Square grew more popular. Well, if you don't want to drive, there is a Marta station right at the square. So you can just ride Marta. They do have a ton of restaurants there. They are all walking distances from each other, and most of them seem good. Some are new, and some have been there forever like Raging Burrito. You can choose among different style of restaurants. You can get great pizza at Sapori di Napoli. You can have awesome sandwiches and drinks at Victory Sandwich bar. You can eat sushi at Sushi Ave. You can get great food at Iberian Pig. Heck, even King of Pops hang out there. There's also a ton of drinking establishments like Brickstore Pub, Mac Magee, and others. They have cafes like Java Monkey and Starbucks, of course. In the center of the square, there's a huge gazebo. You can see people doing Bagua or Taiji at certain times of the day. It's a nice place to hang out. But in the end, it's a gazebo. Nearby, there is the Dekalb Historical Center where people can rent to hold events. For example, a Yelp Elite Event was held there one day. Overall, I have good memories of Decatur Square. From my younger days getting tossed around by taijiquan guys, going to that Yelp Elite event, and eating crappy Asian food; until today where I can finally eat great food there. read more

Staying in Midtown Atlanta and was looking for more of little shop type shopping rather than the typical mall stores and thought that Decatur would be the place but it wasn't. Just a handful of shops and restaurants. Wasn't worth the $15 Uber ride. read more

I love the Decatur square. Right in front of the courthouse for anyone working the the area. It's filled with local places to eat and funky little stores. Decatur Square is a great place to hang. There are a number of parking options. Mostly, it will be paid options during the day. However, the nearby government building offers up free parking after hours and on weekends. Meters are also free after 6pm and on Sundays and weekends. There are lots that are paid no matter what day/hour it is. There are a number of places to eat, bars, and shops. Love the concentration in this little area. Though it doesn't seem cramped. Love the lighting at night. The Square also hosts events throughout the year. It is the main gathering area in Decatur. read more
