This place is amazing. I think it could be easily missed but it's definitely worth the stop. I've come a few times these past few months and they never miss. I always get the Jerk Chicken and it's so good. As Hispanic man I'm very picky when it comes to rice and they nail that too. Service is always good. Been to island choice a couple times for the oxtail. Parking can be limited in front of the house, you can park on the lot over the fence where Avon park diner is. They accept cash or card. The wait time for your order can take a bit of time for them to prepare but they give you a decent amount for the large oxtail dish. I visited Island Choice for lunch yesterday and had a good experience. I ordered the Curry Goat with Rice and Cabbage. I decided on the small portion and I'm glad I did because I received a mountain of food, which was more than enough for one hungry person. The food is served to go but there is available indoor and outdoor seating if you want to dine in. The goat was tender, rich and gamey with a light curry flavor. In Avon Park directly behind Avon Park Diner. Hidden gem right off of Route 27 behind a new wooden fence. Look for the Jamaican flags. Look for the white house with reddish orange trim. Living further south in highlands county, I performed an online search with no luck for Jamaican food three years ago. I just discovered it recently and I'm ecstatic. Before my recent discovery, I would travel down to Fort Lauderdale for similar fare every few weeks. You don't see the food in front of you behind glass at a buffet table like you would see further south in Fort Lauderdale/ Miami Jamaican joints. Down south you can see what is running low or just recently cooked. At those establishments, you just point or request and server makes your plate. Here you don't have that advantage. Menu board items change routinely. Go early because they sell out of their daily selections quickly. I dined in on my first visit and by end of my dining thirty minutes later four menu items sold out. Not being able to visualize the offerings makes it tough if you're a newbie. Being able to see the food beforehand tremendously helps when exploring a non native cuisine if you aren't from that ethnicity. I guess Yelp can help with that. The food is magnificent. Fresh and with that homemade granny quality. Small daily rotating menu. No dumplings nor boiled green bananas were offered on my last two visits. Patties and fritters are on offer though. Large selection of tropical juices and sodas. Prices are fair and portions are generous. Staff treats you like family with their southern hospitality. I believe I met the owner but I was so excited with my new discovery that I forgot to get her name. I'll update review later. She did tell me that before she opened up twelve years ago she would have to venture south to Miami, her hometown, for Jamaican fare. Cake and sweet potato pie are also available. I'm in love. Before moving to highlands county, I would eat Jamaican at least 1-2 times a week. The last three years have been dreadful without my weekly Caribbean fix. The service was wonderful and the food was delicious!!! I went at 5:30 on a Wednesday, and after my order was filled they said they were already sold out of oxtails. Folks were visibly disappointed. CUSTOMER SERVICE- This is one of those places where you order at the counter. The friendly guy with the island accent flashed me a big smile with a gold tooth and the music started in my head again. Could I have been transported to Jamaica? ATOMOSHERE- Giant parking lot. Tiny little place with about four tables and ice cold air conditioning. Big covered outside deck. Expect everything to come in foam containers with plastic utensils. Elegant it's not but who cares when the food is this good. FOOD- I ordered the small Curried Chicken with a side of corn @ $7 but I could have had goat, or pork or oxtail, or snapper and even more. PRO TIP- Most dishes come in small and large and the portions are ginormous. If you order a large a football team would be happy. Yes I'm exaggerating but not by much! My chicken was piping hot and incredible! Multiple flavors just bursting in my mouth with every bite. I'm embarrassed to say that there is drool on my keyboard as I type this. Holy oxtails! The food here is yummy. Alvin brought home two oxtail meals last night with cabbage and rice. Not only did it come in monstrous portion sizes (thank goodness I worked out earlier ), but the meal was seasoned perfectly and tasted amazing even after a little reheating in the microwave. I think it says a lot about the food and chef when you can make eating cooked cabbage exciting, lol, and this place does just that. I've had the curried chicken from this place too and it's good...not as good as the oxtails in my opinion, but that may just be personal preference. I can't wait to eat here from here again -- maybe even at the restaurant since I've only had carry out -- and try some of their sweet potato pie and/or coco bread. read more

This joint gets NO STAR at all. I was recommended by 2 clients of mines that the food is good. I got off work today, and decided to try Island choice out. I went inside, while looking at the menu, I was greeted by a black female, I told her this is my first time here. I order a small brown stew chicken and a jamaican Patty on the side. I waited about 5 minutes, a black male came out the back and bagged my food up for me. I gave him a $20 bill and he gave me $5 back in change. I start eating the jamaican patty as I'm driving home, I get home take my food out the bag and start to eat a piece of the brown stew chicken. Then I started to eat the cabbage, and it had a sour taste, so I dug to the bottom of the cabbage and realized the the cabbage was cold at the bottom of the plate. I smelled the cabbage, and the cabbage smelled spoiled. I also let a neighbor of mine smell the cabbage and he to agreed that the cabbage was spoiled. So, now I get on the phone and call Island choice. The black female that took my order answered the phone. I said " Hey I just left from Island Choice, I ordered the brown stew chicken with rice and peas that came with cabbage. I ate a little piece of the brown stew chicken, but the cabbage is spoil." She immediately says " I'm eating the brown stew right now nothings wrong with it. WHAT YOU WANT YOUR MONEY BACK!! I said, " NO I was calling to see if maybe I can just switch it out for maybe a pattie and something to drink instead, I never said I wanted my money back." She then says NO I can't switch it out for a patty. Remind you the food was $13, the patty is only $2. I proceed to tell her that I called because nobody has to know what's going on, all I have to do is walk in, you take my food back, give me a patty and something to drink and I 'll be happy. At this point she is loud upset, she tells me I can't get my money back or switch out the food.. I immediately hang up the phone go back to Island Choice, and return the food to the sender.. Her customer service was extremely awful.. The sad part was she didn't even realize that she won, because Island Choice got paid for something that I could not eat, and I was willing to just take a $2 Jamaican Patty with a drink, to settle the problem, even though I had paid $13 for the plate of food. Great Jamaican Restaurant. We stopped by on our way down from Winter Haven to Miami. Had curry chicken, oxtail, rice w/ beans and veg. Food was wonderful, full of flavor and authentic. Not a high-end restaurant. More of a typical hole in the wall. You have to be open to that. A couple of inside card tables to eat on. Plus some seats outside. Has about 6 or 7 mains. Only downside was that my green beans came from a can. But can't complain as the chicken and oxtail tasted awesome. read more

I have eaten here probably 5 or 6 times since moving here in October 2019. I have had the jerk chicken, snapper, goat curry, and brown chicken. It is all delicious. You do need to call to see what is available and order while on the phone. Once it is sold out I think it is gone for the day. The cabbage is awesome and so are the patties. These people are super friendly and the place is clean. A lot of people wont try it because it is basically a house with an order counter in it with seating on their covered patio. Its their loss. If you like good food, regardless of what part of the world it is from try this place out. The portions are HUGE. Order a large if you want to eat on it twice. read more

Great job Avon Park having this addition of Jamaican food! Located between Winn Dixie and Maron's (correct my spelling) Produce shop, this restaurant is a small, cute white house that you can definitely see when driving by on US 27. There is inside and outside seating, note that the inside only seats 8 people. The staff is super friendly and for the price of the food plus the quantity of what you get, you definitely get your money's worth and more! The day I went my mom and I spilt the Oxtail (VERY delicious!) with Rice and a salad, we ordered a large and wow, the large could definitely fit 3-4 people. They have a good serving of food that's for sure! I tried the Curry Goat, did not taste gamey at all and was really good!, also tried the Jerk chicken and Chicken stew. Everything was so good! Truly crave worthy! Mom and pop establishment with island character and food that will leave you craving more. Portion sizes are very large- we laughed as we compared the weight of our Togo boxes on the way out. We were all able to get two full meals out of our lunch portions! My favorite restaurant (hands down) in this area and possible the best food I have had while living in Florida. I travel ~45 min just to visit this gem! Goat curry with cabbage and rice side is perfection! I have also tried the brown stew chicken, curried chicken, and the oxtail. The meat is always incredibly tender and seasoned deliciously. If you like spicy add a healthy splash of their scotch bonnet hot sauce- it packs some heat but is spot on in flavor. Outdoor patio completes the island feel. Couldn't ask for me... I was dining at Island's choice quite a bit in the summer of 2017 with my boyfriend and neighbors. I must say that the place itself is very charming, and clean, the customer service is top notch and last but never least, the menu is filled with delicious authentic flavors. I always try something new when I visit; my favorite dish so far is, the oxtail with cabbage and bean with rice. We love this place so much we checked on them on the day after hurricane Irma to make sure they did not have damage to their sweet place. Thank goodness they had no damage and just needed power to start up again. As soon as they reopened we were back for more! Avon Park was out of power going on 5-6 days so it was nice to be able to get a home cooked meal at Island's Choice as soon as they were up and running. I would recommend this quaint family owned and operated restaurant to all my friends and family over and over again! read more

Delicious food, relaxing low-brow environment, and really friendly staff. I ordered brown stewed chicken with rice, stewed cabbage, and a beef patty. The meat was so tender and fell right off the bone, the sauce was amazing, and somehow the chicken skin was still crispy even when covered in sauce. My friends had similar experiences with their orders--curry chicken & goat. The beef patty was crispy, flaky, spicy, AMAZING! Sitting out on their patio with reggae music and a nice breeze truly gives you island vibes. I only wished they had fish available and a location closer to Lake Placid!
