I've been a loyal customer for decades and as long as things don't keep changing in the wrong direction, I always will be. BUT. The restaurant was called Sybil's named for it's founder until the move from Church Ave to Flatbush Ave a couple of years ago. You want to change the name? OK. But ISLAND Express? This is a Guyanese restaurant and Guyana is not an island. Roti being called wraps??? Whoever you are trying to appeal to is a tiny portion of your customers. And the name doesn't helps in the competition with other Caribbean restaurants in the area. It makes it worse, makes it less unique and sounds too much like all the others. Bad move. Be careful not to lose your Caribbean folks while you pander to a few new transplants to the neighborhood. But my latest order contained Guyanese patties that have shrunk in size and Jamaican patties that definitely weren't freshly baked home made as through all the years. They were the out-of-a-box sawdust filled junk you can get in bodegas and pizzerias. Not even the good frozen brand. WTH??? Come on now. And since the move, no more little treats like plantain chips etc. One more point to ALL the Caribbean places doing pandemic deliveries, STEP UP YOUR GAME. No cancelling orders because you're out of this or that or you only sell that on Sundays or Tuesdays till noon and all the other down home crap. You are in NEW YORK!!! I just recently moved to the area and Island Express has been a great find. This has become my go to meal after a long run in Prospect Park with the Jerk Chicken, rice, peas, and plantains or chickpeas being my favorite, but the BBQ chicken and chicken curry with roti are amazing as well. I had tried this earlier and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor. For my beef and chicken patty fix I'll usually stop at Golden Krust but decided to switch it up and was happy I did. Not that there is anything wrong with Golden Krust but this was just different. I had chicken and beef patties and also had the jerk and curry chickens. Also tried the oxtail. Everything was great. Service was great. Location was clean. Really have zero complaints and that's why I rated 5 stars. Will be back for some more soon. read more

I called ahead, as I was craving some Jamaican beef patties. The person that answered the phone was pleasant and told me to come to the restaurant and order, he said "I got you " . When I arrived at Island Express the staff gave me a warm greeting. I ordered a dozen patties, half beef, half chicken. I was impressed with the way the prepared food looked, so I ordered oxtails as an after thought. The patties have a delicious golden brown crust and delicious savory filling. I tried roti for the 1st time with the helpful suggestion from the staff (jerk chicken roti). Other food on the menu to sample: Jamaican chicken & vegetable patties (Crust is so flaky & the wheat crust of veggie patty can be eaten on its own) Whole wheat tennis roll, & side of okra. I have ordered delivery from this location several times in the past few months and I keep having the same issue. I order 1 order of 1/2 dozen cheese rolls fir $8.00 ( as seen on the menu on Grub Hub) along with other items. When my order is delivered I open my bag and notice over and over again that Island Express has sent me 1 individual cheese roll for the $8.00 that I paid instead of the 1/2 dozen (6 cheese rolls that I paid $8.00 for). Someone at this Resturant is not taking the time to read through the order and they keep getting it wrong!!! This is totally avoidable if someone would only. On this lovely summer like day in BK, I had a serious craving for Guyanese food. Not sure why, but I've had all other types of West Indian cuisine (Jamaican and Trinidadian mostly) and felt there was something lacking. So thanks with the good graces of Yelp and finding authentic Guyanese food in NYC, behold Island Express (insert awesome island music)...as soon as I walked into this beloved establishment, I was warmly greeted and kindly helped with my selections (I was completely hangry as I speak...lol). I chose a mix of peas and rice/chow mien (ridiculously good) + spinach + curry chicken = a major slice of heaven! Honestly, it's what I envisioned with Guyanese food (Indian, African, Chinese, European wrapped all into a perfect marriage). I also got Sorrell juice and a couple treats (Pineapple and Cheese Tarts). Insanely delish and worth the dollars I invested (even as broke young professional trying to save the world...lol). My review is limited as I only tried the beef patties and the jerk chicken with rice & beans. As others have stated, staff are really nice, friendly and efficient. The jerk chicken is not done in the style of crispy, hot off the coals, but is still excellent in flavor and tender. The jerk sauce is not too spicy for the folks that can't take fire. These guys keep the jerk chicken nice an moist and I suspect it's all dark meat so no dry white meat to be had. The standout for me, is their beef patties, WOW! I grew up on Tower Island beef patties, Island Express beef patties are very similar, almost identical in shape and consistency, but you could tell that the beef filling has a slightly more home made or natural quality then the mass produced Tower Island patties (which I absolutely love regardless). I prefer Island Express beef patties over Golden Krust ANY DAY, I also think these beef patties are a superior product over most empanadas (I know they aren't supposed to be the same). For those unfamiliar with these types of beef patties, it is essentially a tender, spiced ground beef filling with a slight kick, surrounded by a flaky, yellow thin crust and crimped at the edges (similar to empanada). The meat filling is a considerable portion with an excellent crust to filling ratio (versus calzones or empanadas that typically have a higher outer crust to filling ratio). They take credit cards, and their food is already prepared and warmed so this is an excellent spot for a quick meal you don't have to wait for. I did not experience dry old food sitting in a warmer for hours, so I assume they have a steady clientele that keeps inventory fresh and moving. I am a huge fan and will be returning to eat a few dozen beef patties. In one sitting. read more

I ordered takeout from this spot and I was looking forward to it based off of most of these reviews but I really didn't enjoy my food. I got the vegan curry with rice and peas + a veggie patty. The curry was too spicy (not hot spices, but all of the others) and there was no heat like a traditional West Indian curry. Tasted a lot like East Indian curry which isn't what I was expecting. The veggie patty was kinda soggy but overall the flavor was there. The sorrel I got is made in house I believe and very delicious. Maybe I'll actually go to this place in person and give them another try but they missed their mark for me today. read more

Hey im a big fan of your restaurant, but have a tip. Your website has a section for shipping food. I am not sure if this is only available a few days a week or will in the future, but it would be smart to work with your webmaster to deactivate or provide some reasoning on why its not active. For example, when allan's bakery allowed you to order online they would say deliveries can only be shipped on tuesdays and wednesdays. Its a good idea to have delivery by the way as its hard to find your food outside of the tri state area. Many carribean restaurants are losing out on profits because they cant get a delivery system together! read more

Casual place with awesome food. I had white rice + jerk chicken with a side of plantains. My hubby had rice and peas + beef curry with a side of okra. They also have beef patties in the bakery case, and it was so good! We came in during the lunch hour, and didn't see many people dining in. We did see people stopping in for takeout, though. Also, there was construction going on by the city right outside on the sidewalk, so I'm sure that may have blocked the view of the storefront. Would definitely go out of my way to go back! read more
