We've been coming to Lava Java for years and it's our favorite spot for breakfast. It has a great view of Kona's oceanfront and it's relaxing to drink your mimosa or Mocha (or both as my wife does it) and watch the boats and para-sailors. The service is very good, especially if you are upstairs when Tawny is working. I used to get the Portuguese sausage, eggs, and rice. However, I tried the hollandaise a few visits back and I have been hooked ever since. Now I get the eggs Benedict with home fries and extra sauce for the potatoes. Make sure to visit this spot when you're looking for a tasty, easy going breakfast.
Definitely wouldn't recommend. The food was average, not a lot of flavor at all. They sat us a table without an umbrella, we were the only ones without when there were others empty. Worst part about this place was the server eric did something shady with the tip amount. I pressed the total amount on the hand held payment and when I saw the charge it was more.
We had breakfast at Island Lava Java and the location alone makes it worth visiting. It's right across from the ocean, the views are beautiful, and we even got to see dolphins while we were eating, which made the experience extra special. I had the island style pancakes and they were delicious. The coconut syrup was the perfect addition, and the Portuguese sausage was also really good. My husband had the luau scramble, which was alright but felt like it was missing a little something. My brother in law ordered the loco moco and really enjoyed it. Overall, we had a nice breakfast and would definitely go back.
Had a great breakfast experience at the Island Lava Java. We walked up to see what the wait time was like and we got lucky that a group had just cancelled their reservation so they took us right in. The service was excellent. Our waitress took care of us and was very friendly and funny. We sat in the upper balcony so we had good views of the ocean and surroundings. There is plenty of space for big groups upstairs. The food we ordered all looked great and tasted even better. I got the loco moco and it was very filling and delectable. We also ordered the ham and cheese croissant, and the burger with sweet potato fries. All excellent choices.
Stopped by for breakfast because it was across the street from our resort. Terri our server was so sweet and helpful. Never kept us waiting. We started with the French press Kona coffee which was complex and delicious. My wife loved her fresh catch Benedict I had the lava java breakfast and it was fantastic. Waffle was a little chewy was the only critique. Will definitely be coming back.
We came here twice. Once for breakfast and once at lunchtime. The restaurant has a beautiful ocean view. If you are able to get a table up front, you will have an unobstructed view of the Pacific ocean. Sometimes you might even be able to see some whales or a school of dolphins if you go during the right season. Our first visit was during lunch. It was around the time they were turning over their menu from breakfast/brunch to lunch and we were told that menu items would be limited or we could wait 10 more minutes while they complete the transition in the kitchen. We decided to share a pizza which was one of the no waiting option and the ahi bites. The Kona combo pizza had pepperoni, Italian sausage, olives and onions. It was large enough for the two of us to get full. The ahi bites were excellent. We had to wait for 10 more minutes to get them but they were worth the wait. The house wasibi aoili and umagi glaze were so flavorful and definitely elevated the taste of the ahi nuggets. Service was quick and friendly. Our server checked on us often enough to make sure we had drinks and that the food were delivered to our table. Our breakfast visit was the following day. Unfortunately, service was slower and our waitress was not very attentive. My husband ordered the island bagel and lox and I had the drag it through the garden croissant breakfast sandwich. While the food was good, the overall visit was like night and day from our previous experience. I'm still glad we came for breakfast though as the place does have a lot of great options as far as food went.
This morning was already a bit stressful because we couldn't decide where to eat, and in the end we chose this place because of the many reviews. Unfortunately, it ended up being disappointing. We ordered a vegetable omelet to share and two drinks, and the total was almost $70, which felt very overpriced for what we got. The portions were small and the food itself was nothing special. It definitely wasn't exquisite or memorable in any way. The view, however, was beautiful. We were seated on the second floor with an ocean view, and that part was truly lovely. But even with the scenery, the experience didn't feel worth the money. My husband's coffee also wasn't good at all. The waitress was polite, but the service was quite slow. Overall, the location and view are the best things about this place. Sadly, the food, drinks, and value didn't live up to the hype, and we left feeling frustrated.
We have been coming to Island Lava Java for many years now . We had a server Named Eileen who was so so sweet and attentive! Greeted us with a smile , even offered us to sign up on the app for rewards, which we had been 3 x already this visit and nobody else offered sadly ! Bagel & Lox are delicious, nice portions of Salmon , bloody Mary's are so good! Kalua pork, pineapple and eggs good also . We have never had a bad experience here , Tany is another server who is so nice and always smiling. We will miss the ocean waves and sunshine ! See you next year !
This place was recommended to us by locals so we knew we had to check it out. The view was stunning, you could see the ocean and people swimming. It was also fun to people watch as lots of shops are nearby so there are a lot of people walking around. We got the omelette, pancakes, and the eggs Benedict. The food was delicious, would order all of it again. Great ingredients, everything immaculately cooked, and generous portions. My favorite dish was the pancakes. They had a creamy sauce on top that really complimented the macadamia nuts and the bananas. It was sweet, ward, cozy and crunchy. My husband really liked his omelette, it was flavorful and perfectly cooked. The eggs Benedict was amazing because it came on a croissant which was just so extra in the nest way. The service was excellent. Servers were kind, attentive and knowledgable. I would definitely recommend this spot for a solid breakfast with a stunning view.
We had an amazing time Makamae was such a character and made our dinner so memorable. She really did a great balance of lightly offering things that helped me make a decision throughout the evening to keep the experience progressing without coming off as pushy. I felt like I could take as much time as I needed, but that she had good insight into the menu. So much fun so much good food highly highly recommend the poki and beet salad and the pono mai tais!!!
Love the outdoor porch vibe by the shore. Had a relaxing time enjoying an amazing meal with the views and sea breeze. Got to try the luau scramble and the pineapple upside down French toast. Both were unique fusion dishes that made for a fun brunch. The luau scramble uses a fried, crispy pork belly instead of bacon for protein. It's a nice thick cut with good flavor to it paired with rice and scrambled eggs. Worth trying! The pineapple upside down french toast was decadent! It really fuses the pineapple flavors into the french toast really well for a good excuse to do dessert for brunch!
Huge portions! Tasted great! Tried a pancake island style which meant macadamia nuts, banana, and their unique coconut syrup. I loved it, it was so filling and delicious. Also tried their garden omelette which was fresh and packed with veggies. The potatoes were a hit, perfectly seasoned and crispy!
So we got to Kona and I have been trying to eat healthy. That meant I needed my coffee fix. Luckily, Island Lava Java was right down the street from the condo. After working out at Planet Fitness, stopped in for a Cafe Mocha (organic espresso, chocolate syrup, steamed milk & house whipped cream). Definitely worth the visit and can't beat the views.
Came here for brunch and the food was very underwhelming. The wait was about 45 minutes to get a table and our food took even longer to come out! Everything tasted just okay to meh. The fries were the best part. I ordered fish tacos and requested no cilantro, extra cabbage. The tacos came out with no toppings at all, just the tortilla and two dried pieces of fish. I told the waitress I asked for extra cabbage/slaw. She went back to check and said there is cilantro mixed in so they put no toppings at all. Okay lol. Wouldn't you just tell the customer - unfortunately there's cilantro mixed in the cabbage, since you asked for extra cabbage, do you still want it? That's just me. Anyways...I did ask for the slaw since the cilantro was very minimal. The fish was over cooked and dry. French toast was dry and the lox bagel was bland. I do not recommend eating here there's probably way better food in the area. read more

Where to begin. Service was outstanding. Location is amazing! And the food...delicious! This is a must to start out your day on the right foot. We had the following: French Toast: amazing caramel pecan syrup with all the island joys. Highly recommend! Island pancakes with macadamia nuts and coconut syrup was divine. I could have drank that syrup. Lava Java breakfast was also good and super filling. The portions were a lot and I definitely couldn't eat it all. Also, try a fresh fruit juice, I had the POG. Island Lava Java is another over the top ambiance business to visit on the Kona Coast. Starting with their unobstructed view of the ocean, it just gets better. A copy of the menu is already posted above on this Yelp site. Their coffee products top the list. We were seated immediately by an over the top friendly staff member. The facility is spotlessly clean. This is a locally owned business & caters to the tourist trade. I remain astonished how friendly everyone is in Kona !! read more

Usually with beach front places I assume it's more for the view, than the food. Honestly was blown away by how good the pineapple upside-down French toast was. It wasn't over powering sweet, the Carmel had that homemade taste, and the nuts balanced out the sweetness from the pineapples. It was such a great way to start our day, with a cocktail in hand too. 10 am isn't early enough. If you're a fan of deserts for breakfast that are actually good, I would recommend the French toast. Pretty hefty price tag, but most unique well done flavored item I've come across in a while. read more

The view here is great! and has a wide variety of seating. Our waitress was super cool and the food looked really delicious and in fact, was super delicious. It did take awhile for our drinks to come and a different lady came to give us our drinks but did not know which one was which. Overall, very flavorful and fresh food. We had brunch here on a Tuesday morning and although busy, there were still a number of open tables. My friend and I shared the Fresh Fish Benedict and the Go "Island Style" pancakes. The Benedict could have been better, nothing to rave about. The mahi mahi was over cooked, which was disappointing. The pancakes with macadamia nuts were good, but the coconut syrup was the true superstar of the dish. It was absolutely delicious! Food was delicious and views can't be beat. My family of 5 dined here for dinner and all of our meals were excellent. We went here for our first lunch in Kona and chose it because it has ocean front views and outside seating. The weather was nice so why not take advantage. We waited at the "wait to be seated" sign and I was amused to see how hard the waitresses tried to pretend they did not see us. It was funny. Eventually, someone came to seat us. It was happy hour (isn't every hour happy hour in Hawaii?) so the wife and each had a big beer. We then split a wedge salad (so very Dallas of us) and it was good. The quality of the lettuce was good and they added grilled onions for something different. We both liked it. The wife had Calamari which she said had excellent flavor but was really chewy, presumably from being over cooked. I had the fresh fish sandwich and it was really good. The piece of fish was a generous portion. It was seasoned well. The sweet potato fries came out warm instead of hot. Overall, it was a good experience and I would return. I did note that a lot of the menu items that I wanted to try were sold out or not in stock so I hope they can improve on that. read more

We went to Kialua Kona for the day and landed in the morning and were starving for food. The coffee is really good. We had the chocolate latte hot as was the iced coffee. The pancakes were good and filling, as was the coconut syrup. The other breakfast items were also good and filling. The only drawback was the service. The server was nice but slow. It took a long time for her to take our order for coffee. I was hoping to get a cup down before eating breakfast. Parking is only in the back. I would still definitely return. read more

Good breakfast. Make a reservation on Open Table and you can request outdoor seating - we did so and got a table with a beautiful view! If you don't make a reservation, you can put your name in or sit at the bar (bar is first come, first served). I received an email with a $10 off coupon and we showed it to the waitress. She said she'd fix our bill, but after we paid and tipped 20% we noticed she didn't. Disappointing! read more

Don't be fool by the emptiness, it's because they take resos and reserve those. They should just do first come first serve and resos for large parties. But the bar is opening seating! We got the bar seatings and didn't have to wait. We ordered some cocktails. I got their mai tai. Nothing special about their mai tai but it's very strong! Good choice. We got the chicken wings, ahi tuna salad aka the Niçoise salad, ahi sandwich and the fresh catch of the day. Those chicken wings were delicious. The salad was good too. My fresh catch was good except the fish needed a bit more salt. Once added it was good. Nice place with a good view and good food. read more

I heard the ribs were phenomenal and that Guy Fieri showed them on DDD. Luckily I only ordered the appetizer size, because they were awful. The sauce was nothing special and there was barely any meat on the ribs. For the meat that there was, it was so hard to get off the bone and it seemed so dry. The meat is supposed to fall off the bone since it was supposed to be cooked sous-vide for 18 hours. Luckily I got a side salad too because that was all I ate, and it was decent. read more

This place was perfection 2 years ago. The food is still really good, but the service quality went way down. Our original plan was to dine in twice this week like we did last time we visited, but we ended up getting our food to-go the second time to avoid the bad service. Which is sad because the location/ambiance is fun. The busboy was super nice though. Would prob still come back for the food in the future, i just hope they get their service back up to how it used to be read more

Loved the ambiance, and although it took a while to receive our food at the bar, the server was friendly. My husband and I ordered the pancakes, and I opted to have mine island style. I wish the add on cost for Island style was actually listed on the menu as the original pancakes were $12. The island style just added banana, macnut, and coconut cream for an additional $6, bringing it to $17.95. While you do pay a premium here in HI, I expected more for that price. The pancakes were tough and overcooked, as were the sausages. You can definitely find better options in the area for that price range. There also didn't appear to be any non alcoholic iced tea or drink options besides soda and juice, and there were no prices listed on the cocktails. read more

Island Lava Java was my favorite breakfast for my two week trip to hawaii. Located in the heart of Kona with a beautiful ocean view. Went for breakfast around 10am and we were seated right away despite not having reservations. The hostess was thoughtful and sat us where we get a perfect view of the ocean without us having to ask. Our server was sweet and attentive. I ordered the luau scramble which had kalua pork and pineapple - very unique dish and tasty. My friend ordered the egg benedict. For dessert we tried the cinnamon pull apart. Yum! Island Lava Java will definitely be the go-to breakfast spot when Im in kona! read more

Made it to another Guy Fieri DDD joint! Can you tell I'm a fan? The food was good but I wouldn't say it is enough for me to come back again especially with other choices to eat on the Big Island. The island Benedict was good. Creamy, fattening, pretty much what you want when you go to breakfast. I ordered the beet salad to counteract the Benedict. The salad was good. It is a classic beet salad with goat cheese and walnuts. Everything was fine but nothing too spectacular. It was a bit expensive but what's not in Kona? read more

Made a reservation for brunch less than an hour before actually going. Wasn't as busy as I thought it'd be. Went alone and loved that they put me upstairs in a quiet corner to enjoy my alone time with a great view. Unfortunately wasn't able to try their cinnamon roll, but was ensured their pull apart was simply quite alike. Loved the sugar, the size was so big, and the insides were warm to the touch. A good sweet to start! The ice tea did not taste like lillikoi, but was a good subtle simple tea. Comes unsweetened so glad they brought me sugars. Lox bagel was good, great equality of cream cheese to salmon to onions. Ordered without capers on mine. Nice views, nice workers, and nice bathroom... enjoyed my brunch! What a wonderful way to fortify your daytime adventure in Kona. Hubby and I wanted something substantial and flavorful to start our day and Island Lava Java did not disappoint. As soon as we came in we were welcomed in such a way that Hawaii is so famous for. Our server was so friendly and very knowledgeable of all of the menu offering which there were a substantial amount. We ordered our coffee and main entrees and before we could even blink it was brought out. The food was amazing. Very flavorful and dare I say healthy. Wanted to eat at another place nearby but they were closed so we ended up at Island Lava Java. The view along the waterfront is nice and it's a great location but the food was Americanized and pricey. Everything was cooked well but the food was simple and not authentic local "Hawaii" food which I was hoping to eat. I got the fish tacos which were cooked ok but it left me desiring something more. A couple friends got the poke which didn't have much flavor either. Another friend got calamari and a burger which he liked but there was nothing special about it. Service was ok but was impersonal when they have you order and pay online. With so many other great places to eat, I would choose somewhere else rather than return here again. read more

What's good for lunch?
Fish and chips if you're on vacation. If you are leaning healthy, the Lava Java salad with the grilled shrimp. The goat cheese on that salad is fantastic!
Can you get lunch all day? For example, we would like to come for breakfast, but also pick up sandwiches to have at the beach later that day.
The entire lunch menu is NOT available all day. However, they do offer a brunch menu that includes some lunch items.

No. Breakfast is served until 11:00 and then they switch to their lunch menu.
