This is a fun, small place in an out-of-the-way location. It's the second floor of a two story commercial building on a side street. It's worth finding. The food is great and a great value. It can get crowded - we had to wait for a table. You order at the counter and then they bring it out when it is prepared. We ordered two sandwiches and a salad. I really liked the pulled pork (Richard's Pickle). They did not have a liquor license when we visited, but indicated they will be getting one and opening later when they do. read more

These sandwiches are stupid good. We randomly stopped here to get away from the Kona crowds, and very hungry after a long tiring tattoo session. We were not disappointed. Tried pork belly, bacon and salami special, with a lemon garlic aioli that was homemade and delicious. The restaurant is a pretty cool spot, the owners are Eagles fans but have some cool and fun memorabilia throughout the shop. As Bills fans we did appreciate the homage to Josh Allen. read more

No. 6 - Richard Pickle - Tender and delish smoked pulled pork with a subtle chipotle honey mustard a few sliced pickles, dill pickle ranch slaw, and a spattering of crushed salt & vinegar potato chips. Given the name I was hoping for more sliced pickles or pickle flavor in the ranch slaw but otherwise it was a fantastic sando. The garlic bread roll alone was amazing. The melted Swiss was in there somewhere and added to the mix of fabulous flav. Also kiddo approved. 5++ stars! No. 1 - Big Sean - loved the smoked beef with the local BBQ sauce and melted cheddar. The sliced tomatoes were super fresh and the black pepper ranch slaw and French's crispy onions really made the sandwich. Excellent brioche bun as that side of black pepper ranch was the perfect dipping sauce for the sandwich and just about anything. So super good. 5+++ stars! Leave it to Portlanders to bring the creative deliciousness. We'll definitely be back every chance we get! Stopped by for dinner before heading to the airport, and boy were we surprised by how great Da Whip was! It looks primarily almost like a quirky dive bar (even though it's currently BYOB because the liquor license hasn't come in yet), but the food was the real star. The sandwiches are all unique, creative, and super flavorful-- all at a reasonable price. The vibe was on point-- plenty of decorations around, and the garage door facing the ocean was opened up, allowing a lovely breeze throughout. The owner was super friendly and chatted with us a bit after we ate. I ordered the vegan "No. 15 - Hall Pass", which was only $13 and full enough to feed two of me. It had vegan "unicorn meat", which was phenomenal; I'm still not sure what I ate, but it was damn good. My wife ordered a side Chavez Salad for $6.50 and it was almost as big as my bowl! My only nit is that it was a tad hard to find because it's on the 2nd floor of an unassuming building. We drove by it then parked and walked around for a minute before figuring it out. Anyway, check this place out. You won't be let down. read more

Great little place just outside of downtown. We flew into Kona and picked Da Whip because the boys were hungry and this place fed us well! Da Whip is new but it has that old beach bar feel. Well adorned with images of the islands a couple of big TVs. The front of the restaurant opens like a garage door, letting in the breeze and keeping out the midday sun. We sat over looking the ocean in the distance. The server was also the owner, super friendly and dedicated to her enterprise. The food was very good. We ordered two Dragon Balls and one Richard Pickle sandwich. The boys devoured the meatball subs and grunted with approval. The Pickle had a great balance between the honey mustard sauce and the pickle slaw. They do not serve alcohol yet but are clearly geared to include adult beverages as soon as they get their license. I won't be rushing back there, but it was an ok one time experience. First of all, it is upstairs. The arrow on the sandwich board was somewhat misleading. We went up the stairs, but someone said there was an elevator somewhere. Not sure where. Service was super slow. There was one 2 top table ahead of us that shared a sandwich, but it still took 31 minutes to get my food. Maybe don't go there if you are starving or in a hurry. I tried the Number 8 grilled cheese sandwich. The bread was about the size of a piece of store bought loaf bread, and it was VERY greasy. The flavor was okay. I squeezed it out and then squished it in a napkin, yet it was still dripping grease. Be sure to check the days special up by the register. The server told us about every single item on the menu, but didn't mention the special, which is what we would have got if we had known about it. We may try it again when we aren't in a hurry. At least it was different from what we have available in Kona. read more

I travel all over the states for work and the Richard Pickle is hands down one of the most creative and amazing takes on a Cuban sandwich I've ever tasted. From the first crusty mouth crunch of the bun to the perfectly smoked pork to the complexity of the slaw, it's absolute heaven. My only regret is that we didn't discover this gem until a couple hours before we have to fly home, otherwise it would have been hard not to come here multiple times in a week.
