We have been going here since 2005. It's been a favorite. However lately we ventured back because we craved their Taco Salad. When the Taco Salads arrived it was noticeably smaller. Chicken we ordered had no grill marks like before and the chicken was placed on top as one piece. Very little lettuce, and the shell it came in was smaller. Really sad to see. I know everyone is cutting corners and making concessions to make a profit but this was not a meal sized portion. We've enjoyed fish and chips, sliders, tacos, burgers, salads prior to the changes. For old time sake I ordered a Mai Tai. I was surprised a lime wedge replaced the pineapple and cherry skewer I enjoyed. Staff is friendly and host was very nice. Music at 6 pm is fun. We love watching the sunset, musicians playing and sometimes a gracious hula dancer. It can be busy, long waits for dinner. I really hope Huggo's on the Rocks can retain its special charm. read more

Only come to this restaurant if you've already eaten and aren't really hungry. We got seated quickly and were able to order right away, yet it took an hour for the two of us to get our food. I ordered the shrimp and fries dinner. I got 6 small breaded shrimp and a little box of fries. It was about $30 or $5 per shrimp when you include tip and tax. I was of course still hungry as this would barely qualify as an appetizer and definitely is not a dinner plate. I live here and won't ever be coming back to On the Rocks. We stopped in for some much needed dinner after a very long night. As we had eaten at Lava Lava the night before, we had a pretty good idea of how great this place would be...and we were correct. The place was very busy and quite loud, so we had to sit at a high top in the bar. No big deal! Our server was incredibly attentive and made some great recommendations. We decided to start with quest and chips, which was brought out very quickly and nice and hot. As we inhaled the quest and chips, we decided on fish tacos for me and a veggie burger for my husband. The fish tacos were wonderfully seasoned and cooked very well. The tortillas were a bit greasy, however, and I was very happy there were two tortillas to each taco since there was also a bit more drip than I expected from the pico. I also had fries, and the fries were excellent! The veggie burger was epic. This was the second veggie burger from this group of restaurants he has had, and I'm pretty sure it's his favorite in the area. Perfectly cooked and seasoned well, with great fries. It was very busy here, which is always a good sign. Just wish the music wasn't as loud because it's hard to have any sort of conversation. We came here the night we landed. Sadly we missed sunset or I'm sure it would have been beautiful. But when we checked in, they told us it would be a 45 minute wait for 2 people. So we sat at the bar as it was full service and had 2 seats together. The bartender was nice but did not fill water or check on us unless we really tried to get his attention. We both ordered the furikake fresh catch. It comes with two sides as well. The coleslaw was actually really good as it had a coconut flavor. The fries were also good. The fish was pretty good but a little dry. The main reason I wanted to come was for the ice cream pie. We got the Kona coffee flavor ice cream pie. 5/5 stars. It was so good. However we had to order it twice as our waiter forgot to put it in and we had to ask someone else about it. There was live music too which was nice. On the Rocks is the less expensive sibling next door to Huggo's. I had limited expectations as On the Rocks is high on the tourist meter. The reviews were great, the location great, especially for the sunset, and we did not have plans or reservations for dinner. I'm happy that the overall reviews were accurate (sounds like there were some bad experiences though as well), and it exceeded my expectations. They do not offer reservations, so first come first service for the bar, and you put in your name for a table. We were a party of two, and were lucky to grab seats at the bar for drinks while we waited. You can order from the food menu at the bar, our table was just ready after our drink, and had a better view. I had their version of the Mai Tai, which was good, but I'd recently had Mai Tai bar's, which were standout. What was a stand out drink here was their Ube limeade. We ended up coming back in the afternoon another day to have another before we left the island. There is a fantastic view, especially if you can time it for the sunset. They also had wonderful live music and dancing, when we were there, which made it an even better experience. We thought the food was great. My friend and I shared the pork nachos, then the fresh catch, tuna that day, with volcano seasoned fries, which were not spicy, though just standard good fries, and the key lime pie. The nachos were standout, right toppings and right portions. The only thing was not great was the service at the table, though the servicer did recognize and apologize, and was friendly in all interactions. If you can get there before the sunset, and there is not too much of a wait, a tourist location that lives up to the hype. With a party of 4 but only reviewing a shared Ali'i quesadilla appetizer and my poke bowl which were both excellent. Service was slow but I'm ok with that. We wanted to sit and dawdle for the sunset view which was magnificent. We were seated right beside the water so lovely, but zero shade. It was hot! Giving the place 4 stars for only two bathrooms (large crowd), and I personally hate food in baskets of any kind - these were large dim sum presentations with the plates inside. We came at a particularly busy time and had difficulty getting a table, but that's on us for arriving on a Friday night with clear weather. This is definitely the place to be on Kona if you want a good drink with a view. The scenery is not to be missed, and the live music is definitely a bonus as well. I really enjoyed the fish and chips, which had dill in the batter (yum!). I also had the good fortune to order the Ube Limeade, possibly the best drink on the menu. Our server, Quince, was very personable with us. We would have liked a little more prompt service, but again it was a busy night and tables were completely full. I have no idea how On the Rocks handles rainy days. They may have to limit tables to those under umbrellas, but this is definitely a place that's best enjoyed in nice weather. Beautiful view of the ocean while you dine. If you get a table closer to the oceanside, you get to put your feet on the sand if you wish. Vibe is excellent! We stopped for lunch and a couple of fun cocktails after a morning of activities and we were not disappointed. My husband had some fish tacos which were served with volcano fries and I had a poke bowl. Both were excellent but the highlight for me wad the ube limeade which came in a tall glass with the rim dipped in dissicated coconut. So delicious, I had 2! No reservations, but the front was able to seat our group of 6 easily without much wait. Our waiter was fantastic and attentive. They serve classic bar items with Hawaiian flair, and their popular entree is the fish tacos. The food was good, but with limitations. Some items were overly salted (chicken strips), and others came out cold, like they had been sitting around for a while (room service vibe). The best item was the dessert, Mauna Kea ice cream pie. On the Rocks has got to be one of the best places we've eaten during Thanksgiving. We couldn't snag a reservation--we were too late--but we took a chance on walking in and it totally paid off. The poke bowl was delicious, and the noodle dish was just as good. The bowl looks bigger than the portion size, but once you finish it, it's honestly the perfect amount. Do not skip the Kona coffee cheesecake. Absolute must-order. The atmosphere is unbeatable. You're literally sitting in soft white sand, right by the ocean. Can't say enough good things about this establishment. We were trying to hit up Huggos, and ended up at On The Rocks by mistake. (They are both branded Huggo's and On The Rocks is a sister restaurant) But what a great find! On The Rocks is on a lava rock shorefront, (Hence the name) and the scenery is spectacular! We caught the sunset while we were there, and enjoyed the tiki torches once it got dark. I got the fish sandwich, and my wife got the fish plate, and they were both deliciously fresh. We upgraded the side to a cup of their chowder, and that was some of the best chowder I've had in a while. Although I haven't been, I understand that Huggo's proper is a little higher end, and On The Rocks is a little more casual, with a friendlier price point. That suited us perfectly, and I honestly believe that the waterfront view is better at On The Rocks. Probably one of the best happy hours on Big Island. Happy hour starts at 3pm and goes to 5pm. You are not just getting a premixed drink served, but real wells. Love the view of the ocean and shade of there is sun or umbrellas for rain. The service is awesome and not slow at all. The servers are very attentive and ready to help. Make sure you have your license plate number to give them and have your parking validated. Ordered the Ceviche Wontadas, Huggo's Famous Seafood Chowder, and the Fish and Chips. Ceviche Wontadas were enjoyable...fresh ingredients and in 'crispy wonton cups'. Forget dipping, just bite right into the wonton cups! Seafood Chowder was served in a sourdough bread bowl and beautifully presented. Very thick and creamy, homemade taste with fresh seafood and not out of a can. I had to remember I wasn't eating Clam Chowder and the seafood was a nice change. I would have preferred the chowder in a regular bowl to really enjoy the dish and have more chowder, but I also love sourdough bread. The Fish and Chips were perfectly prepared, very much like an English Pub. They didn't use cod, but a heartier fish Their tartar sauce was smooth in texture, but complimented the fish perfectly. I went without malt vinegar so it wouldn't take away from the taste of the fresh fish. Great spot for food and scenery. I look forward to visiting again. read more

This was my favorite restaurant of our week-long stay in Kona. The service was the best of all the restaurants we have been to and the food delicious! Top that off with tables in the sand (under generous shade) and the water hitting the rocks not 15 ft away, the whole experience was relaxing and memorable. The mahi-mahi fish tacos and sweet potatoe waffle fries were EXCELLENT! Did I mention they had great service here??? Seriously, it was top-notch! They do validate and while their tiny little parking lot is likely full, the lot next door at Snorkel Bob's is the same zone and wasn't full at all at noon. It looks like it's connected to Hugos, but a more casual, laid-back Vibe. The views are amazing. We seen Dolphins jump out of the water which was pretty cool to see. We were there for happy hour. Runs from 3-5pm. They have a few food items for $7. I decided to try the hh nachos and the fish tacos. Don't get the nachos. They put a little bit of queso with about eight chips and not all the chips had any toppings. Probably worth a $1. Happy hour fish tacos were pretty skimpy imo. I tried the volcano fries and they were good. Not spicy but just like Cajun taste. Fries are pretty good. The chicken BLT was really good. The bread was nice and crispy and the chicken was meaty. I had to try their MaiTaiand it was Pretty good for $6. Service was ok. Wish there was music while we were there. I did see a musician arrive as we were leaving at 5pm. It just had a seasoning on them and not any sauces like we were thinking. The sweet potato fries were good but not amazing. The poke nachos were good but I was expecting better based on all of the great reviews. None of us cared for the crispy fried chips it came with. It had an odd oil flavor that we didn't love so most of the chips went uneaten. We did love the Mauna Kea ice cream that we had for dessert though.
