It's been a while since I've been to Island Mix for lunch. Their menu offers a mix of Caribbean and Caribbean Chinese food. They also have a full-service bar, a couple of pool tables, and entertainment in the evenings. There are locations in Oshawa, Vaughan, and Kitchener. I had their Curry Chicken with rice for lunch. It was falling apart a bit but the flavour wasn't bad. Good portion. It's also available with roti instead of rice. The d.j was playing good music at the time only thing I would say is I was supposed to have fried rice with egg and I had no egg in it and there was a lot of miss orders. read more

We did a pickup order and were very disappointed and dissatisfied in some aspects. The beef curry and dhalpuri were sub-par. we had ordered boneless, however both curries had bones. Also we requested pepper sauce on the side for all 3 mains, however none were included. of course the server did not review the order and we did not notice until we arrived home. and the price for boneless is higher than regular so this was particularly disappointing. We have ordered several times from Island Mix j. the past and in seems the quality and service has been going downhill over time. It seems we will need to start exploring alternatives. read more

The quality of the good has drastically gone downhill. The curry is usually watery and the roti is terrible. If you don't eat the roti right away, it gets hard and tastes stale. This is within minutes of removing it from the bag. They use to have terrific food. Don't know what changed but it's extremely disappointing. read more

Great establishment, I honestly enjoyed their food and it was well prepared. The one thing I did like wasn't even food related was their DJ and was definitely playing the right tracks !! Fantastic place for a family meal. We've been here several times as a large group and have used the catering services as well. Excellent everytime! I only wish they had more fish options beyond the escovitch. Curry is delicious as is the corn soup and generous portions of stir fry rice and noodles. Highlight was probably the soup and mix veggies dish. They know how to take simple ingredients and elevate them. I was impressed by the service (warm and friendly) and at the price point Island Mix is hard to beat. We enjoyed the steel panist who did both classic and modern hits. Food- came here and split a bunch of dishes. There were just two of us, but we had happened to come on a Tuesday Night meaning half priced wings! Also ordered the black pepper shrimp, shrimp fried rice and the sizzle beef plate. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed the food. It tasted pretty good, hearty, filling and the wings were crispy and nicely sized! Portions are definitely generous. Would recommend coming back for the wings and their fried rice. Also ordered wine.... but it was BLAH! Warm!!! Tasted almost like tea?!?? Not too sure why but will definitely not be getting wine with my meal again. Service- terrible. Probably that's why my rating remains a 3. Took a really long time for the waiter to tend to our table. I understand they were busy, but I also caught the waiter socializing quite a lot while we were waiting for the bill to come. Friendly server, but not the best when it comes to prioritizing. Environment- need to get rid of the flies somehow. Sometimes they fly around and bug you while you eat. It was quite hot, no real air circulation and crowded. Tables got bussed late because the server was socializing ... maybe that's why flies are flying around everywhere? Overall still would come back for the food if I were in the area. Wow!! I was part of large party who had reservations here last night. First they didn't have our reservations when the organizers went to confirm and then we showed up to a "closed for the evening" sign on the door. All they had to do was CALL US and let us know! This is my second bad experience with Island Mix in a week. I used to be here every weekend back in the day. Those days are long gone and most definitely will never be coming back. Ordered a large family size container of chicken chow mein and it had very little chicken, it was embarrassing to serve this at the family reunion dinner. First time at the Island Mix at Pickering location. The food was great and the drinks were better. Although their service was poor and hostess was not friendly. I come to this restaurant only on Tuesday's ( half price wings) and Wednesday's (half price appetizers). On Tuesday's I order their honey garlic wings and their fiery bbq wings with a side of poularie (fried dough balls). I'd say their wings are delicious 4.5/5. On Wednesday's I get their boneless chicken appetizer. I'm not sure why it's classified as an appetizer, I would consider it a main. However I'm not complaining as it's half price. The boneless chicken comes in any flavour as the wings ( over 15 flavours from what I remember). The food is great but the service tends to suck. One of the reasons is probably because I go on days with their specials only. The food takes forever to come, the servers are meh, and the ambience is just okay too. Sometimes I'll have a good experience and other times I'll have a terrible experience. However, since the food is so cheap and good on Tuesday's and Wednesday's... Island mix probably the top when it comes to West Indian food in the East of the GTA so far. They do a lot of their food right, The price points on certain items accompanied with the bad service that I seem to be getting on a repetitive basis is there greatest pain point. I find that island mix is missing the basic restaurant philosophy. The customer is always right (within reason) We went out one night my friend found a hair in his food but he eaten maybe 20% of the dish. Our server replied by telling us if there was a hair then why did you keep eating it in a very rude tone (he just found it) My personal favorite was when I got a dirty plate. Looks to be there was some general Taos chicken on the rim of my plate, no problem my waitress came by and scratch it off with her nail. God guys pull up your socks. Going to have to update this review based on moving to Durham. Toronto has excellent fusions of food, and tasting different cultural foods is a key to Toronto experience. What you have here is a Fusion of Carribean and Chinese foods here. With a wheel of pepper sauces you can try A few ways to enjoy this place: A date for cultural experience, a good lunch all you can eat, take out, and a party night out based on their schedule. The place doesn't get any too lively on any night until after 10pm, and only on a Thursday. There is a night out to be had here if you like the music here, and know people. My personal favorites for food: I start off with poulorie, you can get doubles if you wish Caribbean infused drink menu for the ladies, I am told the mixes are pretty good Special Fried Chicken (with fried rice, or that lowmien noodle mmmmmmmm) Jerk Chicken rice peas done pretty nicely All in all. You usually walk out with much better food, better mixed drinks, and a lower bill than you would say at Jack Astors. Which is why I quietly have dipped in and out of here for about 10 years. Honestly a customer shouldn't be waiting an hour- to an hour and a half to get their food. The food is great but the service is horrible.

Although I've been here a few times, it was really because 1) I didn't pick the place and 2) I didn't pick the place. I've also had this as take-out but just like #'s 1 & 2, I didn't pick the place. As you have noticed, this wouldn't be my first pick if I were craving some "island" food. But the music they play, now that deserves 5 stars. Service is courteous...when you finally get it. Parking here is nearly impossible on the weekends so if you can, carpool. [Appetizers] Doubles - Not too shabby, though I've had better. The dough seems like it has too much of something because it was just a little bit too much on the chewy side. So chewy it's almost rubbery. It's sort of like reheating bread in the microwave. 2/5. Polourie - Read above. Also 2/5. Crispy Crab & Cheese Wontons - This may very well be the best thing on their menu or at least what I've had. If for some reason I end up here again, I need to remember to just stick with what hasn't disappointed me. 5/5. Crispy Chicken Wontons - Ground chicken was used which is nice to have as an alternative especially for those who don't eat red meat or pork. Just wish they would add a little more flavour to it, though. Plus, because they're deep fried, the filling tends to be overcooked. 3/5. Crispy Shrimp Wontons - Definitely better than the chicken version but could still be better. Chicken Balls - Surprisingly not too bad and I love me some chicken balls. The chicken to dough ratio is actually not bad and their sweet and sour sauce is also not bad. I give it a 4/5 stars only because the dough is, like the doubles and polourie, a little on the chewy side. [Soups] Corn Soup - I honestly felt like I was in the army when eating this soup. They literally cut up whatever vegetable they had laying around including the cobs of corn and threw it in the pot. Never have I ever had cut up corn on a cob in corn soup. That just spells out laziness to me. I've also never had big chunks of potato in corn soup. 1/5. Shrimp Wonton Soup - Another disappointment in the soup kitchen. The Soup Nazi would have their ass fired. NO SOUP FOR YOU!! 1/5. [Chicken Wings] Chicken wings is my thing. Chicken wings to me is like the cover to an unread book that I will use to judge a restaurant. Not because I'm a jerk but because these are chicken wings we're talking about. You cut up the wings from a chicken, season it up and fry it up. Simple as that. But there is still an art form when it comes to chicken wings and it's how well it's fried and how the sauces taste. First time I had their wings was when my cousin ordered it for take-out. Thought it wasn't very good but given that it wasn't freshly made, it wasn't as good as I was expecting. Plus it was just a plain old mild/hot flavour. It could also be the sauce they used. Second time I had it, I had Honey Garlic. You can't go wrong with honey garlic, really.....until you have it here. Normally when you're hungry, anything you eat will taste good. Not this time. I thought maybe they had an "off night" with their wings so whatever. But then I gave it another try. This time it was their new Teriyaki flavoured wings. I've accepted the fact that their thang ain't chicken wangs. I took a bite out of their BBQ and also their Honey Mustard and still it was horrible. It honestly tasted as though they've used recycled frying oil to deep fry their wings. I shudder as I even think back to this. It's like mopping your clean floor with the same dirty water that's been sitting out for weeks. Worst chicken wings EVER. 0/5. [Other entrees] Their fried rice and chow mien were pretty decent. But this still would be the last place where I'd order these items. As delicious as they look, they both very much lack flavour. 3/5 for both. Spicy Garlic Shrimp - This, next to their Crispy Shrimp & Cheese Wonton, is the best thing on their menu. Think twice!! Do not book large gatherings or celebrations here unfortunately they can not handle it. Reservations were made 2 weeks in advance for Nov 23rd 8pm, 15 people in total and celebrating 3 birthdays, never would I have anticipated the night to go the way it did. 5 of us showed up at 7:55pm and were told "yes we are getting the table ready" which to me off the bat was already somewhat disappointing because a table is suppose to be ready for when you arrive and for your reservation time, not at your reservation time to start getting it ready. Anyways we proceeded to the bar to kill time and socialize while they prepared things it was now 8:30pm still no table, around 9pm "A" table that seats 6 people was ready by then another 5 guest showed up which made half of us had to stand and half sitting which now started to get embarrassing and annoying but yet still being very patient with the manager and server as they said they were under staffed. we decided to start ordering food as we already had the feeling that food would not be served fast, placed orders around 9:15pm, finally another table became available seating another 6 and the final guest arrived around 9:30 to then also be standing once again as we were waiting on a 3rd table. Meanwhile all this time the reservation had been made for 1 long table or tables to accommodate the style seating plan which they missed the mark on. Finally the third table became available around 9:45-10pm and with having to remind and request twice for the seating to be re-arranged how it was requested to be in the first place. we are now at 10:30pm roughly and still no food has come not even appetizers, at this point the patience had worn out! you have people drinking and not providing food to help with the alcohol, other costumers who had been coming in after us throughout the night were being served before us to add insult and when I spoke to management and the server they still continued to not improve their services, still not provide all the orders of food, and still continued to make the night worse. NEVER have I experienced something this terrible and what made it more embarrassing is that it was meant to be a celebration, a fun night, and you would think from a business perspective you Island Mix would want to make a good impression especially being a large group and to want to have these people return again and again for business, that you would want to get paid properly for your full services and for the inventory of food and alcohol that you provide, that you would want your guests to provide the best review possible in order to promote the business and also to aid in it succeeding. I myself am from the west indies and some of my guest that I invited there was to show them the food, culture, and music and how great it is, instead it was beyond disappointing, upsetting, embarrassing, shameful, disgusting and mortifying that a business and services could be so terrible. Everyone in the party was upset and definitely will not be returning, it was so bad we didn't even get to the cakes, nor enjoy some dancing instead had to get up and leave to go find food somewhere else to eat. Horrible experience!!! I made reservations for 15 people over 3 weeks before mother's day and I called 2 days before mother's day to confirm and the manager informed me that I cancelled and unfortunately they are fully booked. I told him I didn't cancel and someone on their made a mistake and now myself and my mom and sister's have to suffer. The manager, Dellon, said all he can do is offer me a $25 gift card for another day. I'm not sure how that's going to help me find a reservation 2 days before mother's day as everwhere is all booked up now. He didn't even offer to try to fix their mistake. I used to go to this restaurant a couple weekends every month and they have now lost a customer. Be careful if you make reservations because they know how to make it but the definitely don't know how to keep it. read more

Been there a few times this month on different nights. Food was amazing, favorites are the crispy wantons, mixed fried rice, sizzling beef and the curry goat is my #1 go to. Tuesday nights are quite fun if looking for a place to relax during the week. The have a new wing flavour every Tuesday not to mention half off wings.
