    Chicken roti special for $5
    Tania B.

The parking situation is a bit tight. However, they are located at a major intersection that you can't miss. Upon entering, I was greeted with a smile. The lady who took my order was nice. The only thing I think would've made a difference between 4 And 5 stars, is the quantity of chicken. The roti itself was really good. But I think instead of pouring spoonfuls of chicken with bones into the wrap, a few extra seconds to strain out some of the bones would've been appreciated. I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually do because of that reason. I was picking away bones like crazy! But hey! $5 for a chicken roti? Why am I complaining? It was a great size for the price.

"One of the glories of New York is its ethnic food, and only McDonald's and Burger King equalize us all." John Corry "Food is our common ground, a universal experience." James Beard If you follow my reviews you know I am picky. This restaurant is a clean friendly restaurant (take out only) with an exotic blend of cuisines only available in the Caribbean usually. I disagree with the other reviews. This is not your typical NYC Caribbean restaurant. I do not understand the low reviews at all here! One reviewer complained about the OX Tail. I don't eat Ox Tail so maybe it is just what they ordered. The Doubles here are incredible and maybe the best I have had! The pastries and Roti here and everything I have had here is over the top delicious! Plus it is cleaner here than most I have been to. It is family owned and the service is friendly. They answer all of my questions and don't have an attitude like some of the Caribbean places I have been to. Lisa K one reviewer said The Doubles are good but gave other dishes a lower rating. I didn't take pictures but I got the Tamarind which is sold either spicy or sweet. It was delicious! It tasted like a Jolly Rancher fruit (if there was such a thing) rolled in sugar. They have a more extensive menu of goodies than most. http://www.allmenus.com/ny/queens/236630-island-cuisine-roti-shop/menu/ The Mac cheese pie was delicious! We have been here many times and never reviewed it. It should at least be on the radar of those who like Doubles. I want to share what they say on their menu so you can get a feel for how delicious and exotic the food is. "About Us' Island Roti Shop brings the exotic taste of the Caribbean to New York and is well known for treating customers like family. Dishes are prepared using auntie Chunkies wonderful recipes. We pride ourselves in creating delectable ,inexpensive prepared dishes. Caribbean cuisine is a unique blend of African , Indian ,Chinese , European and Latin American influences overlaid with those of countries as diverse as Syria , Lebanon and Italy. Prepare yourself for an extensive menu of tropical dishes in a warm atmosphere." The service is so warm and it comes across in the taste of the food. -"If you really want to make a friend, go to someone's house and eat with him... the people who give you their food give you their heart." Food is authentic, never had an issue. Decor could be better, but I only order and leave, so not really an issue... good quality food.

Why did I wait so long to come here?!…read more I mean, I know why. It's a bit of a trek from where I live. But I'll happily travel for good food, and Trinciti absolutely justified the journey. As an Indian, I don't say this lightly. I know my Indian food. I was already aware of the historical overlap between Indian and Caribbean cuisines, but Trinidadian food fascinated me. The familiar spices and flavors are there, yet they've evolved into something entirely their own. You can taste the migration story, the adaptation, and the creativity in every bite. A quick practical note because Instagram reels had me misinformed. They do take cards. You don't need cash. Also, parking isn't exactly abundant, and there aren't many nearby places to sit with your takeaway. My advice is to grab a table and eat there. The space itself is small and pretty no-frills, so if you're coming for ambiance, this isn't that kind of place. But if you're coming for flavor, you're in exactly the right place. The setup is simple. You line up, order when it's your turn, and move things along. It's a busy spot, so a little menu reconnaissance goes a long way. The staff are efficient and patient, but they're not mind readers. Asking them whether shrimp or chicken is "better" feels like asking someone whether you should prefer chocolate or vanilla. Both are good. It depends on what you like. We ordered the dhalpuri roti, which is a soft flatbread stuffed with seasoned ground lentils. If you're sharing, ask for it not to be wrapped. Otherwise, it comes rolled up like a wrap. We filled ours with both the curried goat and the oxtail because we weren't there to play it safe. Both were excellent, paired with those comforting, home-style potatoes that soak up all the flavor without overwhelming you with spice. I also couldn't leave without trying the doubles, and we kept it plain. Oh. My. God. Flavor bomb. At its heart, it reminded me of chole bhature's distant cousin. The same comforting chickpea soul, but interpreted through Trinidad's lens with pepper sauces and chutneys that make it unmistakably its own. I honestly think the chutneys are what take it over the top. For the bake and shark though Pay first, take your number, and when they call you up, tell them how you'd like it dressed. Personally, I have a "trust the chef and give me everything" philosophy, so I said yes to it all. The result was a glorious mess of crispy fried shark piled high with pineapple, lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, and an array of vibrant chutneys that I am still thinking about. They do not skimp on the fish. Watching them assemble it from the front row is part of the fun. Before you leave, do not skip the cassava cake. The raisin dessert was a bit too sweet for my taste, but that's entirely personal and worth trying if you have a sweeter tooth than I do. They also sell plenty of snacks and hot sauces, so take a look around before heading out. One final thing I appreciated. They have a restroom and a sink stocked with soap. Trust me, you are going to get messy. That's part of the joy of eating here. If you're the kind of person who side-eyes people for eating with their hands, this might not be your scene. If you're willing to embrace the delicious chaos, Trinciti will reward you generously. I left full, happy, and wondering why I had let distance keep me away for so long. Some places are worth the drive. Trinciti is absolutely one of them.

My first time trying doubles AND my first time in Trincity. The line started all the way outside…read morewhich added to my anticipation. My Trini friend was shocked that I;ve never had doubles and so this day was my lucky day. When you reach, the servers take your order along with as many toppings and additions. They also had bake and shark, bake and saltfish, and other items to choose from such as dhal puri roti, pholourie with tamarind sauce, it was my first time so I didn't go too crazy and wanted to appreciate the essence of the doubles. I would go back again. It is takeout, so don't get too comfy. Make sure you're ready to grab your order and take that first bite after you leave or reach your destination!
