I have been helping my parents with their home, and noticed that the solar water panels on the home seemed to be leaking. We decided to contact several companies for a quote. Sean from Island Solar Service contacted me the same day, actually within an hour of me entering my information on their website. He was able to visit my parent's house the next day and provided me with a quote. We decided to replace the whole system, the panels and the water heater, since it was old. We were able to schedule the installation pretty quickly especially with a lot of homeowners trying to get their systems installed by the end of the year. Prior to the installation, Sean informed my mom of what needed to be done to prep the area for the install. Basically clean the area surrounding the existing water heater and the space needed. He called a week prior to confirm the install and to start the permit process. The team of installers arrived early that morning (7:30 AM) and was done by 1:00PM. They did a terriffic job. Our property manager had Peter with Island Solar contact me regarding our solar water heater not running consistently or efficiently. He was very professional and informative over the phone. Peter listened to my concerns and we were able to troubleshoot some things to try and narrow down the problems. Peter was respectful of my time and said his team leader, Shawn would call be to set up when they could come out to assess the situation in person, which might be as soon as the same day. Shawn called shortly after and because of my work schedule, we settled on him calling back the next morning to let me know what time het would arrive. At 0730 Shawn called to say he and his team were on the way and would arrive within 20 min. He had someone go on the roof to check the panels. Shawn came in to check my equipment and listened to my problem and concerns and shared some basic information with me about how the solar hot water system works and how often it should be serviced. Shawn determined that we needed a new control panel and a new timer. He stepped out to call the property manager to give an estimate and get the ok to do the work while they were here on-site. Within minutes Shawn got the approval and put his team to work to finish the job within 90min. Shawns team was also very professional, polite and friendly. The only issue I really had was when they set the time on the timer, they mistakenly set it as pm time when it was actually morning. I was easily able to correct that on my own once I noticed it. I'm amazed and thankful that Island Solar is so respectful of my time and promptly took care of my issues. Our solar water heater was not producing any hot water at all. We checked every possible thing we could think of and everything seemed to be working fine. I found Island Solar Service via Yelp on Monday morning and called based on the high customer review ratings, and I am now a very satisfied customer. Just like other customer reviews, owner Peter provided friendly phone service and offered me a same day service appointment. Sean arrived on time and fixed the problem in 20 minutes for $100. Apparantly a power outage several days ago damaged the timer and electricity was not flowing into the water heater. He rewired the electricity directly into the heater and now I have hot water again. I'm not too worried about electricity cost since I have 54 PV panels on my roof. I had first called a Rotorooter call center on a Sunday afternoon since it offered 24/7 service. It gave me a 10pm service appointment which I thought was kind of odd time. Surely enough I got a call back at 8pm saying that the service time will be rescheduled to Monday 9am. A service guy showed up on time, gave me a lot of bull diagnoses (I don't think he knew that I have an engineering degree from Columbia University), and then quotes me a repair estimate of $2100. Maybe he had too much fun over the weekend and still not sober. This is what got me to research further on Yelp and the result is extremely great. 1. December 30, 2022, Island Solar Service (ISS) installed a solar hot water panel & water heater at a cost of $8,122. After they left we had no hot water. Sean said their installation was OK, that the problem was with our house plumbing. He reiterated this many, many, many times. 2. December 31, 2022, called Sean again. Sean checked with his plumber then came by to check. He again insisted that it was not their fault and it was a plumbing issue. His plumber said it was likely our shower fixtures. 3. January 3, 2023, we had our shower fixtures replaced at a cost of $2,000. Our plumber didn't think that was the problem from the start. After replacements, still no hot water! 4. January 11, 2023, our plumber came to troubleshoot. After examining the installation and some thought,he said it was the mixing valve. They tested it and it was a defective mixing valve that ISS installed. He also said it looked used. For the first time since December 30 we had hot water--this troubleshooting plumbing work cost us $898.55! 5. January 12, 2023, spoke to Charlie at ISS. Charlie said that Sean didn't handle it properly because he didn't test the mixing valve which is what Charlie said he would have done. Later Peter accused us of making this up because Charlie wouldn't throw Sean under the bus. Oh yeah? Why would we make up something like that??? Much less even think of it!! 6. January 13, 2023, told Sean that we should not have to pay for the January 11 troubleshoot visit. They gave us wrong information on why we had no hot water. He accused us of trying to get free plumbing and would have nothing to do with us. If we had a problem with that, to call their front office (Peter). 7. January 13, 2023, spoke with Peter (owner). Our conversation didn't go anywhere. He just gave us a lot of irrelevant talk, fluff,poor gathering of thoughts. Lots of finger pointing. He accused us of removing their defective valve. It had to be removed because it didn't work! 8. Feb 7, got a call from the C&C inspector (Water Works Plumbing) because ISS turned us in for having problems (no valve). Inspector will need to check that one is installed. According to our plumber,inspectors typically do not look at these jobs. Charlie even said that inspectors rarely check solar work - ISS was simply being vengeful. Childish. 9. Since ISS turned us in for not having a mixing valve, we will need to put one in. More cost added for us because of their incompetence. 10. Feb 7,2023, we got the troubleshoot bill from our plumber which was $898. 11. It's bad enough that we had to pay to fix their defective work, but what made it worse is they turned us in to the city inspector which increases our cost even more! Childish and vengeful! 12. We felt that ISS's attitude was "So long sucker! You're on your own to take care of the problem we gave you!" They are totally unprofessional and have no concern for the customer. I Inquired about having my hot water heater repaired. Spoke with Peter on the phone and he was polite and professional. Peter sent a technician to my home and the technician stated that we needed a new quad breaker. The technician quoted $500 to replace a quad breaker. I received a second quote from an electrician who determined that the breaker was fine and was able to determine the water heater was the issue. $500 to replace a quad breaker that doesn't need replacing during normal business hours seems like a scam to me. I called Island Solar Service to schedule a maintenance servicing of my solar water heating system, because I couldn't remember the last time it had ever been done. Everything worked fine but I knew the system was aging... the old bulky panels on the roof of my house were there for the past 30 years, and the wood that was used to brace them was rotting. Sean came out to do the service, looked at everything, and I brought up my concerns about the system needing updating soon. He suggested that if I were thinking about doing so, it would be good to do it this year while the Federal Tax Credits were still at the maximum 30%. We nixed the servicing of the old system, and he wrote up an estimate for a complete overhaul and replacement of the tank, panels, piping and wiring, and was able to schedule me in for the following week once I agreed to his proposal. Sean and his crew showed up on time as scheduled and worked hard for the next 4 hours in the hot sun, swapping everything out and getting my old wiring up to code. The crew was friendly, professional, and did an awesome job. The overhaul was quite an upgrade, and my mind is now at ease knowing I'm not sitting on a ticking time bomb. The Federal and State tax credits made my out of pocket expenses more than acceptable. They treated my home with respect while they went about doing their work and made sure to clean up everything and not leave anything behind. I'm very pleased with their work, and dealing with their guys was a pleasure. In particular, Peter went above and beyond to make sure the technician arrived at our home right away with replacement parts for our system. Our solar water heater was in dire need of repair. Sean helped us get a new one including new solar water panels within less than a week and the best part is he helped us get the instant rebate from Hawaii Energy as our old solar water heater was close enough to 15 years old (the required amount for the rebate)! The backing of my solar water panel is coming off. Since it's still under warranty I called the company that installed it to repair it. They want to charge me over $600 for 2 technicians for 3 hours. I had thought of doing it myself but since it's under warranty - why? Or I had the choice of replacing it at a cost of over $2k. If I were to replace it, I wanted an estimate on what it would cost and if it was the same I would use that company since I feel I'm being ripped off. One of my solar water heating panels on my roof was leaking. I bought my house with an existing solar water heater system installed and saw that it was installed by Island Solar Service 13 years ago so I called them up to see if they might be able to repair it. Sean came over and took a look, the panel wasn't repairable but Sean explained to me since I was the new owner of the home that I qualify for the tax credits to get a new solar system installed for just a little more than the cost of one replacement panel, plus I would get a 10 year warranty on the system. A company serviced my water heater a little while ago and lost a couple of my switches. When I called that company to ask about it, the wife of the owner adamantly denied that her husband would have lost or misplaced these. With the cooler, cloudy weather we've been experiencing lately, we noticed that there was a problem with our solar hor water system, not enough hot water. I ruled out the panels and breaker. The heating element seemed to be working but the output was only 110° at the highest. The mixing valve was frozen. I haven't had to touch it in a long time. I put in a call and was lucky. Charlie had just finished a job and was close by. He arrived soon after and quickly diagnosed the problem. The mixing valve had failed. It was adding too much cold water to the mix. Since we don't have any young kids, he suggested by-passing the cold water mix. It's a quicker, cheaper fix. He also suggested turning up the thermostat to about 125° instead of the factory preset of 120°. If the water gets too hot or the electric bill noticeably jumps, I can always turn it back down to 120°. They weren't the company who installed the system but I would not hesitate to call them again if needed. read more

The company was very responsive and prompt , coming when they said they would be there. They told me I needed new solar panels but didn't seem to know of any energy rebates that could be applied to the installation. Since the technician didn't do much except take a picture of the leak and turn off the water supply and pump to the panels , it is hard to assess their work.
