In Response to Mr Scott Kim's Response Below There's ALWAYS two sides to the story Continuation...Part 2 Moreover, if this is or was a requirement within the State of Hawai'i, do you think the two permits (one for the seven panels installation, and the other for the 10-panel installation closed on December 2, 2010 and March 3, 2011, closed almost one year prior) would have been approved and closed by the City and County of Honolulu? I think not. (Please note as mentioned previously, Giant Solar did not have flashing installed with their installation as well. Their job was closed and recognized within the City and County of Honolulu on December 7, 2009). Despite these misunderstood claims, Hi-Power Solar, during the busiest time of the year, took the time to accommodate Kim, free of charge. Kim and Hi-Power Solar agreed to hire M&R Roofing Company, on Hi-Power Solar's invoice. Sometime in November of 2012, while M&R installed the flashing on Kim's roof, they discovered that none of the Hi-Power Solar penetrations were leaking. Kim's skylight, that was previously there, was the cause of the leaking that Kim was experiencing. These skylights, that Kim failed to disclose, were found within the same vicinity of the solar panels. The Hi-Power Solar penetrations had no signs of leaking, even after two years. In theory, Kim saw that there was a leak, found that other homes around him had flashing, called Mike Choo of MRC Roofing Company, did some research on-line, and accused Hi-Power Solar of illegal practice. THERE WAS NO ILLEGAL INSTALLATION DONE HERE. Again, all this work was done and paid for by Hi-Power Solar during the busiest time of the season to ease and accommodate Kim. Was he out to gain something from this? In late December, about four to five days after M&R's flashing installation, Kim went onto his roof to inspect the latest efforts in finishing the job. He states that the electrical conduit is just lying on the roof and unsecured, several mounts were missing, and nuts and bolts were just resting on the bracket that he can lift them up by hand. Keep in mind the conduit and materials, which was not part of the job that was asked to fix by Kim, are that of Giant Solar's installation. One may wonder to the validity and truth of Kim's claims as he may have yanked on the panels himself to cause it to loosen. Kim then called Romero and started yelling with a few choice words, while Romero was at an appointment with another customer, on why Adams wasn't able to get things done to finish the job mentioned above. Romero stated that Hi-Power Solar was still trying to work him into the schedule. (Again, these corrections were to be cleaned up for free on installations done by another solar company). On a Sunday morning, as Adams, Romero, and Kim climbed on Kim's roof to inspect and confirm Kim's allegations, Kim in his frustration, verbally abused, insulted, and degraded Adams and Romero. Kim continued to threaten Romero to hire another company to fix the aforementioned issues and send them the bill. Romero, after spending a few thousand dollars, decided he had enough, spouted a few choice words, told Kim to "go fly a kite," and got off the roof. Kim called an electrical inspector and had him come out to his house to look at the conduit on the roof and "re-open" the electrical permit. After learning if the electrical permit is left open for too long he would get fined, Kim called Tomas Electric (Hi-Power Solar's Electrician) in desperation without Romero's knowledge. Tomas Electric refused to re-close the permit for fear of any additional accusations and false claims that may be used against him in the near future. If you read Kim's claims, Kim implies that Hi-Power Solar's "original installation" was illegal. Romero called Kim and apologized for using choice words during their previous encounter and asked Kim if they could let bye-gone be bye-gone and wanted to complete the work that needed to be done. He also offered to give a gift certificate to Kim and his wife to go out to dinner, as a form of reconciliation for using choice words. Kim defensively refused, stated that it was not enough, and demanded that he be given more, $25,000 more. Shortly after Romero and Kim's conversation, Kim called Romero and stated that if he were given $25,000, he would go away. When Romero asked him why so much money because the jobs were worth a couple thousand dollars, Kim then changed it to $17,500. When asked again why so much money, Kim had no reply. He instead drew up a Release and Settlement Agreement, threatening to publish his claims and accusations wherever deem able. Romero refused to comply with his threats. All the permitting and installments were completed and closed to code. If you look at the BBB and the DCCA website, everything is valid and satisfactory. This looks like a case of extortion. To learn more details, keep reading...Part 1 Sometime in September 2010, Mr. Matt Adams of HI-Power Solar, was at a local solar supplier and was approached by the department head and a fellow business owner. The fellow business owner spoke with Adams regarding an installation job for Mr. Scott Kim and asked if Adams would do him a favor by installing seven panels for Kim. Adams agreed and met with Kim. They both agreed to charge only for the labor costs of the solar installation since Kim would be providing the materials. There was also an agreement made between Kim and fellow business owner regarding a commission that would be paid out to him for helping Kim out. Kim never paid the commission. On October 6, 2010, HI-Power Solar drew up a contract for seven 240W panels, that fellow business owner was able to provide at a discounted price from the department head of local solar supplier as a favor to Kim. These seven panels were added to an existing thirteen panels that Giant Solar installed previously. Ref: http://dppweb.honolulu.g... Kim noted how unhappy he was with the previous installation of the company and asked HI-Power Solar to fix the previous work as HI-Power Solar worked on their own installation agreement with him. He noted that he did not like the job that was done for the panels, as it was crooked with poor mounting. HI-Power Solar agreed to comply with Kim's request at no additional cost, as he was a referral of a fellow business owner. Kim also requested that HI-Power Solar's electrician, Rueben Tomas -- (of Tomas Electric) redo the electrical central inverter boxes and upgrade the meter to a 200AMP meter. In analyzing the current system, Tomas Electric found that the previous install was not up to code. Tomas Electric worked on the new upgraded system and was delayed due to HECO's delay in turning off Kim's power to allow Tomas Electric to complete the job. Adams and HI-Power Solar installers squared and straightened out the previous system, along with the seven-panel installation, and made it look professional as Kim requested. Kim was very happy with the job done and decided he wanted to install additional panels. On December 2, 2010, Kim contracted with HI-Power Solar for an additional ten panels, this time using micro inverters. The electrical and building permits were also closed. Ref: http://dppweb.honolulu.g... About two years later in mid August, Kim accused HI-Power Solar of a roof leak that he discovered. He called Mr. Ron Romero and asked him to send someone out to inspect the leak. HI-Power Solar sent Adams the very next day to inspect the leak. There was no evidence of a leak whatsoever, however, Adams put additional caulking around the bolts that Kim felt was leaking. Kim, after seeing other homes around him that had flashing on their roof, asked if flashing was necessary for his roof to avoid any future leaks. Adams advised him that flashing was not a necessity. After more research by Kim, he reached out to Mike Chu of MRC roofing, which confirmed his so called suspicion of requiring flashing on all roofing done in Hawai'i. He then called Hi-Power Solar and demanded that they complete the flashing on his roof. He accused Hi-Power Solar of working illegally and not complying with Hawai'i State Law. He inserts in his postings, "under the 2003 International Building Code, Chapter 15 Roofing Assemblies: Section 1503.2., 1503.2.1. and 1507.2.9:" and quote's it as law. HI POWER Solar coated our lanai roof and installed a photovoltaic (PV) system for us. They'll be installing air conditioning as well in a couple of weeks or so, but I wanted to review the PV crew while it's fresh in my mind. Justin led the roofing crew. They were so quick and tidy in doing their work that we hardly noticed that they were there. Once all of the PV equipment was available, the office scheduled the PV crew. Communication for the scheduling was via email, making it easy for me to check back for the details as the time approached. Rae confirmed the dates again just prior to the construction. Because my husband and I both work from home, I needed to know when the power outage would be and how long so that we could work around it. Rae checked with the crew and gave us an estimated timing and maximum duration for the outage. Rico and the PV crew showed up as scheduled. He introduced himself and his guys and let us know that if we had any questions or concerns, to please let him know. He explained that they'd be working a little later on the first day, until 5 p.m., so that they could be sure to finish the work on the second day. Once the work was completed, Rico gave us a tour of our new PV system, explaining how everything worked and showing us the apps for monitoring the system. The crew did a great job - very professional and efficient. In fact, I was so pleased with the work that I called up the company's owner, Ron, to thank him, and I'm planning use them to handle some other projects that we need to have done, including rewiring the electrical for our 1971 house . Ron's son, Cruz, told me that they can do other renovations too, not just electrical work, so the scope of our future project is growing. We keep thinking of other things to have them do while they're here. I am happy with the price, performance, and quality of their work, and I would recommend them to anyone planning similar home improvement projects. read more

it started on May 30th 2025....I had an old solar water heater system that was badly leaking water from one of the solar panels. I heard from a friend about Hi POWER SOLAR . I called Ron ( owner)....he was in Vegas on his vacation (sorry Ron, I didn't know) but he answered his phone and I explained my situation to him so Ron gave me his son, Cruz phone number and if there is no answer, to call him back. I called Cruz and explained my situation, he will call Mike Soto ( lead contact specialist) to help me turn off the water to the solar panels and power off the pump. When Mike arrive and turned the water valves off and disconnected the pump motor, Mike, my wife and I decided that I needed a new solar water heater system he explained how the new Solar system works, it's importance of the maintenance and the credits to be applied to the system....a contract sign with HI POWER SOLAR that afternoon June 5th, 2025 the installation crew arrived. Alden Pitt (lead man),Kawaika Pitt, and Makana Agiviar....Alden explained the installation on how and why the solar panels will be mounted and also explained the operation of the other components on the solar system. All work was done professionally and efficiently and the crew was very customer friendly, awesome crew. Installation was completed that day and my new solar water heater system was " up and running ". This morning I had spent over one hour with a TESLA support person and we tried multiple things, so after that I decided to do a reset of the PV system, just to make sure everything was back in the normal state. I knew how to do it, so I went through the disconnect sequence, throwing off the required switches and then resetting them in the reverse sequence. But to my HORROR the whole system was completely dead, and even worse, there was NO POWER in my home anymore!!! Not knowing what to do I sent a desperate help message to my Hi Power Solar contact, Cruz, the one that sold me the system almost 6 years ago. Less than a minute later he called me back, asked me to check things, and when everything was OK he asked me a question: Did you check the main breaker to the grid? I replied that I had not opened it, but he asked me to check it anyway, it may have tripped. So I did it and... the main breaker had tripped! I reset it and everything was working fine again! All these high tech systems are wonderful as long as everything is working fine, but inevitably something eventually will go wrong and in that case it is fundamental to have an expert hand ready to help you out when you need it! This review is regarding a 2-day installation of 23-panels with back-up battery and EV connection by Hi Power Solar. The installation included the electrical team: Rico (foreman), Bryan, and Matt; Roof team: Justin (foreman), Makana, Kamu, and Joe. All of them were terrific representatives of Hi Power Solar as efficient/ effective professionals and personable respectful individuals. The following is based on my observations throughout the installation process. Rico and Justin seemed to have their respective teams well prepared and interacted with them respectfully. While the installation work was intricate and intense, it went smoothly they all communicated, coordinated, and cooperated well. Rico and Justin took the time to explain the installation process and answered and and all of my questions. Rico explained the the system including the graphic readings on the panel. Justin was honest in identifying some damaged tiles that occurred during the install and planned for repairs with Ikaika, project supervisor. Within a week, Mario and Chevy completed the repairs. I interviewed several solar companies prior to meeting with John Yeh from HI Power Solar. I heard offers about leasing the solar equipment with no money out of pocket, but substantial monthly payments for 25 years or buying the equipment from other companies , each with slightly different maintenance and warranty plans. John Yeh however had an offer I couldn't refuse and I didn't. Once we agreed on a price and plans everything started happening quickly. On the designated installment date, I had three trucks arrive with five or six crew members unloading equipment and materials, which they installed over three days. I tried to stay out of their way, but I had to watch and learn what they were doing. Fortunately they took the time to verify to me that our plans were being followed and that they were placing the equipment where I wanted it. The crew worked very well together and I appreciated the patience of the Journeyman Electrician Connor who educated me on how the equipment functioned and Rico who kept the installment team focused. read more

I had an inverter replaced under warranty installed by a company that is no longer in business and HI Power did the work. The techs who came to install the new inverter were great, they were courteous and professional. I was still having issues with the system but this was because Solar Edge didn't properly process the new serial number to my residence. It was impossible for me to speak to anyone at Solar Edge so I called HI Power again. I was helped by Chase and he was very patient with me (I was frustrated and not being very nice at first). Chase was incredibly helpful and worked things out with Solar Edge and even walked me through how to get my Tesla Powerwall up and running. It was really nice to speak to a human in this time when all that most companies offer is an AI chatbot. Thanks Chase! read more

Hi Power Solar installed my original solar system 13 years ago, so I contacted HI Power Solar about the HECO battery bonus program. Cruz Romero was very helpful in explaining everything, estimating what we would need, and giving us a quote. We decided to upgrade our system. Hi Power's team kept us up to date with HECO's requirements for the battery bonus. HI Power's installation team was wonderful. Many thanks to Rico, Jayden, Ashley, Conor, Jeff, and Damar for the great job they did. Our only problem was that our old micro inverters would not communicate with the new system, so I needed to upgrade the old micro inverters through Enphase's legacy upgrade program. We just got our PV installed. Tasha was the sales person and Geoff did all the paper works for HECO and town associations. Three men crew (Rico, Justin, Matt) did a great job. I thought the company will bring more guys, but these guys just went on their business and get it done. I saw them very organize and work well together. I think it was Matt, very well mannered man. Every time I talked to him, he called me sir. In respect to our neighbor, they did not have blasted music like the people who did our roof. Very clean and cleaned after themselves. I would recommend this company with these guys to anyone. Only one recommendation though, they need to get in the habit to wear mask when talking to customer. But I gave them 5 stars because the work they do. read more
