Hoa Solar answered my email for an appointment very fast for a Solar water Tuneup. Mario called 30 mins before his arrival. Mario knew exactly what was wrong when I told him we didn't get hot water on cloudy days. He climbed up the ladder to look at the solar panels & took pics of what was wrong, He fixed the cause of the problem temporarily but had to come back to fix the pump and mini solar panel. Mario flushed the heater and put in a New anode rod as part of the Tuneup. He gave me the HECO discount and deducted from the bill. Hoa did an Excellent job. 5 Stars . read more

Simple job of one optimizer replacement and perhaps using them as go to solar repairs. Not hearing from them is not a good sign. UPDATE - July 21, 2026: After posting this review, Ho'a Solar publicly accused me of lying, harassment, and having "poor behavior as a human." I categorically reject those accusations. Throughout this matter, I communicated professionally and respectfully, and every factual statement in this review is supported by written documentation. I have now filed a complaint with the Hawaii Regulated Industries Complaints Office (RICO) regarding my experience with Ho'a Solar. Once my RICO complaint number is assigned, I will update this review so prospective customers can reference the complaint. ------------- I rarely leave negative reviews, but I believe consumers should be aware of my experience replacing my solar water heater system with Ho'a Solar. I first contacted Ho'a Solar in February 2025 for an estimate to replace my solar water heater system but decided not to move forward at that time. On June 21, 2026, I requested an updated estimate. The only difference from the original estimate was that I wanted the new storage tank relocated under my carport near the solar collector panels instead of in its existing location. I disclosed that relocation request in writing on Ho'a Solar's online submission form before the updated estimate was prepared. Ho'a Solar prepared the updated estimate for the installation I requested. I approved the estimate through the company's QuickBooks estimate approval system, paid the required $1,500 deposit, and the installation was scheduled. The afternoon before the scheduled installation, I was informed that relocating the storage tank would require additional plumbing and electrical work and that the cost would be "way more" than the approved estimate. What made this especially frustrating was that the scope of work I requested had not changed. The tank relocation had been disclosed before the updated estimate was prepared, yet the additional costs were not identified until the afternoon before installation--after the estimate had been approved, my deposit had been accepted, and the installation had already been scheduled. Faced with unknown additional costs, I canceled the project. On July 7, Ho'a Solar advised me that my $1,500 deposit would be processed for refund. More than two weeks later, I still have not received my deposit. After waiting nearly a week, I sent my first refund status inquiry simply asking whether the refund had been processed, when it would be mailed, and how it would be sent. Instead of answering those questions, I received a response stating that my "continuous negativity, complaints and demands" were "draining" and that I should "find some peace and happiness." After speaking with the Regulated Industries Complaints Office (RICO), I sent Ho'a Solar a formal demand letter, as recommended, giving the company one final opportunity to resolve the matter before filing a complaint. Ho'a Solar did not respond. I have now filed a complaint with RICO seeking assistance in obtaining the return of my deposit and requesting that the agency review the company's contracting practices. Another concern is Ho'a Solar's contracting process. During our communications, the company stated in writing that its practice is to provide the formal homeowner contract on the day of installation, after the customer has already approved the estimate, paid a deposit, and scheduled the work. RICO advised me that this contracting practice raises compliance questions, which is one of the issues I have asked the agency to review. Fortunately, this experience turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I ultimately chose Solar Help Hawaii. Their pricing was so competitive that I upgraded to a 120-gallon storage tank while also receiving better equipment and additional solar collector panels. They provided the complete estimate and homeowner contract, including all terms and conditions, before requesting any deposit, making the entire process transparent and professional. My advice to prospective customers is to proceed with caution when considering Ho'a Solar. Before paying a deposit, insist on receiving the complete homeowner contract, including all terms and conditions, and carefully review it before making any financial commitment. Make sure the estimate fully reflects the work you requested and ask Ho'a Solar to confirm that any special installation requirements have been evaluated before the estimate is prepared. Based on my experience, I would also be cautious about relying on assurances that a deposit will be promptly refunded if the project is canceled. More than two weeks after Ho'a Solar told me my refund was being processed, I still have not received my $1,500 deposit. read more

I also was easily able to schedule a appointment that worked with our tight schedule. They arrived on time and both technicians completed the service quickly and gave my husband tips to assist with yearly maintenance. I previously went with a big named solar company to do my maintenance 5 years ago but decided to try Ho'a since they were a Hawaii Energy partner (for the rebates) and they had great reviews on yelp. In my experience i had poor service! Owner can be very rude! had panels for 15 yrs, new roof done so had Ho'a solar remove and then put panels back when roof completed. Never had issues in past years. However, with a windy night I had 5 panels blew off!!! Called them in concern and did not appreciate their poor response! They did not seem to feel this was wrong. Yet no other neighbors lost their panels. Traumatic event!! Lucky no one hurt. Their response, Not covered at all despite the fact panels put back by them appropriately 1 yr ago. I got a quote but didn't use their services (not any fault of theirs. I have some regrets not using Ho'a). Had a leak on my solar water heater. Asked for a quote to replace/repair my water heater and sent pictures. Told me it was the relief valve (I verified and indeed it was) and said their normal maintenance should take care of that leak. Love the honesty and that they didn't try to upsell/upcharge me, instead they started with the cheaper/budget option to fix. They sent over a link (ad) for a list of all the items for the maintenance and the price. With the list I was confident that there would be no surprise charges or work and easy to compare the list to other companies. They would fix this issue for a fraction of the cost AND at the best price compared to others. Wanted this done fast, but I was willing to wait a week out for the maintenance because of their honesty, great reviews, and best price. If ever I have an issue again, they definitely got a customer in me and saving these guys. This is for the other quotes I received. Except for one other place, about 8 other quotes from the other plumbers/solar repair companies were pushing to replace the water heater tank vice repair, told me a price that was 3x, 4x, up to 10x the cost than this place, and others were spewing items/costs from the top of their head (not a fan of that). From my initial contact with owner Nikki to inquire about the Hawaii Energy Program's rebate for 5-year Solar Hot Water Maintenance, to scheduling the appointments to have the work done (first in 2019 and again just recently), I've been nothing short of pleased and impressed with their work. Commuication has been great- my emails have always been promptly answered and questions addressed. During my first maintenance appointment, they discovered a leaking panel and gave me a list of parts needing replaced along with an estimate. Their quote was reasonable so I approved the work to be done at a later date. The technicians showed up on-time and called beforehand, as requested, to confirm they were on their way. They got everything done and my system was back up and running like new! Fast forward to November 2024...emailed them to schedule an appointment, Brittani responded quickly with a couple of date and time options, chose one, and the rest is history! Excellent service with a bonus rebate We selected Ho'a Solar for three reasons. First, it had high ratings on Yelp. Second, it was a Hawaii Energy participating company, and there was a $200 solar system tune-up rebate. Third, the owner shared a lot of information about the business and some about her personal life. I always appreciate companies and owners who share the history of their business and their journeys. To me, the third reason is often the deciding factor in selecting a business. We had set a time frame for the technicians to come to the home, and they showed up right on time. What I appreciated was that they asked a lot of questions about how, when, and where we used hot water in the home so that they could make adjustments during the tune-up. Japa and Gilson were very thorough and efficient. Japa explained what they were doing and why they were doing various procedures as they went along. This is a lengthy review because I believe in accuracy and detail. Bottom line up front (BLUF): I recommend using Ho'a Solar for your solar water heating needs. The good did outweigh the bad in my experience with them. Ho'a Solar has the best customer service! Office staff and field workers are responsive at any time of the day or night, and it is clear that they want you to be 100% satisfied with the service. Easily 5 star customer service! However... quality of workmanship and/or parts, and project planning prior to commencing work require improvement. 3 star at best during my experience. To define some of my terms: 1) workmanship quality is how well the techs do the job, evidenced by any issues that are experienced after the job is complete. If the techs did the job correctly, then few to no issues should be experienced after the job is complete. Another indication of workmanship quality is how professional the final product looks; if the final product looks "clean and tight" likely good workmanship quality. If teflon tape looks ragged around joints and valves (and I have pictures of this), it makes you question the level of quality of work. 2) Parts quality. If good quality, part isn't bad and works after install. If bad quality, part has to be replaced after installment. It's been my experience (at one point, I was the US Navy's senior inspector for submarine construction) that unless you have observed a person's training or reviewed their training record, discerning between workmanship quality and parts quality is difficult. So, I'll just lump them together, meaning I won't say it's just bad workmanship quality or it was a bad part. A combination of both led to the discrepancy experienced. I give 3 stars for workmanship/parts quality because I experienced 3 different leaks after work was complete on 6/20/23. First leak came from the pressure relief valve (PRV) on the solar collector on the roof. Valve was replaced. Second leak came from the solar collector drain valve found in the garage, on top of the water tank (this was a valve that was purchased at Lowe's because the warehouse supplied valve was broken). This valve was also replaced with another warehouse supplied valve of good quality, based on not leaking. Third leak was from a solder plumbing joint for the "solar collector out" water line, on top of the water tank. Joint was required to be broken and re-soldered. Because of the the GREAT customer service I mentioned earlier, all of these leaks were fixed within 48 hours of installment day. WRT project planning, I give 3 stars because a water tank was brought that DID NOT fit into the space that the tank was supposed to go into and drywall removal was required to make the tank fit. Measurements of the area were taken during the estimate that was performed on 5/12, with work scheduled for 6/20, over a month later. The space required for the water tank should NOT have been a surprise. 4 stars overall. Based on the customer service, I'd recommend this company. The short of it: HO'A Solar is AMAAAZING!! I'm so blown away with their excellence! I will forever use and refer this company moving forward. The much longer story: We recently experienced heavy damage to our home during a recent storm. We worked with our insurance company and was able to have a brand new roof installed, with an excellent roofing company. Part of the scope of work required for removal and installation of our existing solar water panels. Our roofers had sub-contracted another solar company who discovered a leak. That solar company misdiagnosed the problem, and told us that we would we be required to fully replace the entire panel or replace a very costly part. Something didn't feel right and we didn't feel confident that it was necessary, so we sought out a 2nd opinion. That's when we reached out to Ho'a. Brittani scheduled her serviceman to come take a look and diagnose the problem. She was very communicative and Cyrus came out on time as scheduled. He diagnosed the problem, which was much different than what we were told by the other company. He was also VERY communicative, calling us to throughly explain his findings and even sending us photos of where the leak was coming from. Brittani provided us a quote, which was LESS THAN 20% of the cost we were were quoted by the first company!! How can that even BE??!! We approved their quote and scheduled the repair. Fast forward to today -- Cyrus and Evan came out to replace the broken part(s). They were very informative, again explaining in detail of what they would be doing. I went in my yard occasionally and watched as they carefully did their work. Step by step, Cyrus thoroughly explained (in lamens terms) what they were doing, how the broken part had affected the system's functionality, and what they were doing to resolve the problem. Both Evan and Cyrus were very patient, humble, professional and most importantly - knowledgable. When their work on the panels was complete, they checked that everything was in turned on and functioning properly before they departed. They could've left and rushed out, but instead they also took the time to check if I had any other concerns and answered some other questions I had that didn't necessarily pertain to todays work. To me, this represents a company with a team that truly cares about their clients. I can't express how pleased I was with them! 5-stars are just not enough!
