I recently suffered a pinched nerve while working out and my body is generally stiff and beat up from years of lifting weights, running, and martial arts training. The pain was unbearable and I would feel throbbing aches down the side of my arm and shoulder. My first appointment was with Maria and she did a fantastic job. The pressure was on point and I instantly felt relief after the first session. My second appointment was with Moses and he did a great job working on the rest of my upper body. This review is way over due. I've been going to island therapy for many years now. I love getting my massages here, they give the BEST massages. It's easy to communicate with Maria and make an appointment. I've even been fortunate to get appointments last minute on the day of because she was kind enough to squeeze me in. The place is very clean and the staff are very nice. I also feel safe as they make sure to take covid precautions. I usually see Maria but recently saw Mai. I love both of them. They both give amazing massages and asked which areas to focus on. I usually have lots of kinks and knots but always leave feeling wonderful and relaxed. I only get a massage when my body is so sore that I can't sleep well, and my toxic trait is putting things off forever if there's no available appointment for the same day or next day. I was so lucky Maria answered my appointment request quickly, because I had Lama and he was AMAZING! I'm not a fan of laying in silence while getting a massage and he was more than happy to converse with me when I asked him questions and talked his ear off. She works with your adjustor directly to take care of the paperwork and all you need to do is show up, and have her work out the kinks. I've been to multiple therapists at other establishments to relieve my chronic neck/shoulder pain, but Maria has given me the best results. This was my last day in Honolulu and I had wanted to get a massage. I checked Yelp and saw that this place had a high rating so I decided to call and give this place a try. They managed to squeeze me in about an hour from the time I had made my appointment. A good deal too at $65/hour. My therapist was Nieva and she was quite strong. I like my massages firm and requested a male therapist if available but Nieva gave the nice, firm pressure that I like. She was also very friendly and welcoming when I checked in. I have nothing really bad to say about the massage. The rooms were a little on the small side but adequate. The massage studio itself was also a bit small and in the back of a building. I guess I'm just spoiled since I myself work in a spa with a larger footprint and larger massage room. Well worth $65. read more

One of the best massages I ever had. I called for a couples massage and luckily there was an opening the very next day. Island Therapy is located in an apartment complex in the Ward business district. It looks like a shady area where shady business happens, but the place seemed safe. (I wish they were located in a better area. if I were a female going alone I wouldn't feel safe, especially during a massage were you are undressed and vulnerable.) You enter through a gate and go up the stairs. A small cozy waiting area where a woman welcomed us in and gave us forms to fill out. In the treatment room, there were soft sounds playing and ambient lighting. The sheets had a weird smell, not sure if they change them between appointments or their laundry soap just smells weird. I had a female masseur and she was amazing. I like a deep pressure massage, and boy did she deliver. She was tiny but she really worked on my body and focused on specific spots that needed more attention. She did some light stretching which I loved. She was very professional and asked if the pressure was okay with me constantly. It went by all way too quick. I would definitely go to see this masseur again, I forgot her name unfortunately. This hidden gem of a massage studio did an amazing job! We were able to book a 90-minute couples massage just two days before the appointment. They were ready exactly on time, and were interested in areas to focus on and extent of pressure that we wanted. The two different masseuses had very different styles, and both of us left happy and relaxed, but it's worthwhile being explicit and honest about how much pressure you want upfront. They will adjust your masseuse and their supplemental massage tools used based on your preferences. Pro tips: 1. You can park in the few spots in front of the small white building on the arterial. Walk down the driveway and take a left up the stairs to reach the massage studio on the second floor. 2. If you pay in cash, there's no sales tax. 3. Be on time! Working from a makeshift "office" at home has given me major neck pains. Gyan worked on releasing pressure points in the front of my neck, it was borderline painful, but there was an immediate sense of relief after. It made my eyes all teary when he pressed on certain spots. I've never had a massage therapist work on the front muscles but it was amazing! I went home and told all of my friends about him. He normally works at the Marriott in Waikiki so I feel like $65 for 60 min is a steal. Ask for Gyan! He knows what he's doing. read more

Throughout the massage she talked about herself and how she was skinnier and asked what kind of workout my husband does to get his body. She also kept reverting back to his butt during the massage. We are massage therapists on Maui. We were referred to Maria of Island Therapy by another spa in the Waikiki area who could not accommodate us. Thank goodness she referred us to Island Therapy because we would have never thought to book here. Off the tourist beat in a scrappy part of Kakaako is this gem of a massage business. Booking was easy once Maria took over the process and the environment was cozy and clean. My husband had Maria as a therapist and enjoyed her massage very much. I had Debbie, an older Korean gal with a little swagger. At first i wondered what i had gotten myself into when i told her what i wanted and she said "no deep tissue?" As if i was crazy for not wanting a deep tissue massage. By the end of the 90min session i had dubbed her treatment "Debbie's Magic". Wow! I have never had this style of massage before. She literally massages every inch of my fascia with her thumbs to create an ease of movement I've never experienced. The back issue i had gone to the chiropractor for with little result was GONE! Wow... I just received a 60 minute deep tissue massage, and I feel like my entire back has been corrected. My posture is improved, and the tension in my shoulders dissolved, so much so that it appears like they have "dropped" into a relaxed position. I plan on coming here at least once a month from now on. A little about the place: it is a small studio, with beautiful, dimly lit, and clean rooms. The ambience is, of course, very relaxing, with soothing music and lavender. Prices are more than fair: 65 for a 60 minute massage! Yes! (Be sure to tip). Giving a 3 star because my son had a good experience with Diaralyn. However, first of all, I did not get the therapist that was supposed to be there. Second, the massage therapist was good, not too personable. She started off with good pressure which I was ok with. Then when she got to my upper arms, legs & lower back, the pressure was literally killing me. At the time, I felt I could tolerate it and I didn't tell her that it was hurting. I survived the massage but the next two weeks, had bruises on both my upper arms and on my lower back. It hurt so badly the next few days. I think a compensation would've been nice after I told the owner my concerns but apparently, bruising is normal and it's ok to tell the client that they'll have a certain therapist ( whom I really wanted ) but make it a different therapist day of the appointment. Oh well... that was the most expensive torture that I've ever paid for. read more

This is my new go-to massage place. I was spoiled so much by Laka Spa that I was hesitant to give the place a try, but after reading the reviews and checking out prices I made an appointment. It's a nice spot, tucked away on Queen St above a church. Clean and tidy, but very no frills (no fancy robe and slippers like at Laka Spa). My therapist was nice, explained the process, and I told her where I was feeling the most tense. She went to work! I felt so relaxed. This is going to sound odd, but I left there being able to see a bit clearer and overall felt more limber. They are not shy about pressure so do speak up if it's too much or not enough, they're very understanding and responsive. The ambiance in the room was nice, and the price couldn't be beat. I could pay $20+ more for the luxury at other spas, but sometimes you just need to get the kinks out! Sometimes it's about the massage therapist putting in work and not about lavender waters or eucalyptus spritzes (don't get me wrong, those are also very nice, but I didn't have $100+ to drop on that). Your muscles will thank you. Over the years of getting massages I learned something about my self. I had always thought of a massage as a treat to find an oasis and just relax while I smile with my face smashed down into the pillow. Although that may be the thought in my 20's and early 30's these days with the cost of living in Honolulu your work hours verses relaxation time is easily overwhelming. When your work day is too long to even find time to exercise your body will start giving you warning signs that it's time to get a tune up (massage) or have life long pain. So I've learned that I need DEEP TISSUE massages from people that are very experienced. This is where Yelp comes in. After searching for a reputable massage establishment that doesn't charge an outrageous price and located in a safe location this is where I ended up. Island Therapy does text messaging so it was easy to communicate with the owner Maria. Monday through Friday the hours are 9:30am-8:00pm and Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 10am-8pm. Parking hasn't been a problem for me. There's stalls fronting the building that is shared with another business so look for the marked stalls. I've literally never had an issue with parking so that's a great perk! I've been requesting for Debbie who is this tiny older Korean lady that has been giving me the BEST massages ever. Her strength and knowledge of where you are aching is spot on. Till Debbie I had always thought the massages I was getting we great. But I what I didn't know is that the pressure was even more important. If you want to relax and get a soothing massage then be sure to let them know. Because for myself I needed to have someone who can do deep tissue massage and get to the problematic areas. As I've aged the problem areas have been consistent that mimics being on a computer too often which is really not my case. It just mimics that I do desk work and in fact I do the opposite so having a massage therapist that knows more than just muscle like Debbie does has been a blessing. She massages my problematic areas and doesn't deviate because she understands you're paying to get results. If time permits she'll attend to the balance of my body and I'm so pleased with her massages. Be sure to let them know right away what kind of massage you want. Always voice your preferences to get the most effective results. It's your time and money so be sure to alway say if the pressure is too much or not enough. These one hour massages that I get from Debbie are so amazing that I do my best to get an appointment as often as possible. They also offer two hour massages which I image to be heavenly but I'm so strapped for time that it's on my wish list. Needed a place close by Waikiki via bus, and this location had a few bus options from Waikiki and under $70 an hour. The price was reasonable for 1 hour massage. I had a nice older woman Derilynn, who tenderly rubbed me the best way she could and gave me some extra time as well. She told me she didn't want to 'dig in', but I kind of wish she had. She felt doing that would cause more harm and a day later, I did feel a bit better. I don't think ANY massage would have made the spasms go 'away'. The problem was DEEP and the massage didn't do much. She also put some 'icy hot' on me and did a bit more than your 'typical' rub down...which I appreciated. This place is located on the outskirts of downtown and walkable from 2-4 bus locations. I made an appt via my phone and immediately followed up with a call and Maria was quick to confirm my appt and let me know it was good I PHONED as well (just don't use the internet and not follow up/through). We paid 90 min deep tissue couple massage on a Saturday before our flights back home. We didn't receive a deep tissue it was more like a weak Swedish massage. I asked for a full body and the old lady who give me the massage only focused on my upper back, arms, neck and I literally had to tell her to stop massaged me in the arms and tried my feet 15 min before my time ended. She was looking at the clock all the time like she didn't want to be there working it was very uncomfortable. She massaged my feet under the blanked I was cover like if she was disgusted touching by my feet. I mean, i took a shower before my massage, Im not a homeless if she hate her job then why she's offering her services in the first place? Horrible massage the worst in my entire life. I can appreciate keeping down costs, but my friend was a bit put-off by this practice. Also, the room is not your traditional zen-like spa atmosphere.
