I'd love to support a local business, but on the rare occasions that I've visited customer service sucked, owner was incredibly rude when I asked about a product. Thought... bad day.. few months later I go back, super nice young guy working, we were chatting about different liquors since I'm a baker and he gave great advice. Same owner comes out and reprimands him for talking to me, I told him "you've got a great employee and you treat him like crap. He gave me great recommendations but you're an abuser. Here's the thing: I was looking all over town for a bottle of Sons of Liberty Chocolate Espresso Vodka for a gift for someone--I like to support local businesses and Sons of Liberty is made in Rhode Island. Well, I found a 750 ml bottle of it at Vicker's Liquors on Bellevue, but it was $35! Since I knew Sons of Liberty made a smaller bottle, I thought I'd keep looking for that, which I hoped would be more affordable. The other day I happened to be on the corner by Island Wine & Spirits so I thought, hmm, let me see if they have the smaller bottle there. So I went inside and lo and behold, they had the 750 ml bottle... for $20!!! That's a whopping $15 less than the same bottle at Vicker's!! Not only that but the clerk was super-friendly. Now I know where I'll be headed next time I need a bottle of something. read more

Jeesh. Most of the negative reviews for this place involve people who didn't bring their IDs with them... I mean come on its a liquor shop. They are not going to risk their license for a few customers. This shop is clean has a very nice selection of beer, wine and liquors. And the price is quite alright. It serves my purpose just fine. Ooh and surprisingly they also have Soju. My home land brew. They get extra points for going more international. read more

Not a tourist, a local. This business charges 7% more on their products than most other Newport outlets. Suggest any other vendor.

This is a nice liquor store near downtown. If you are looking for a decently large stock of a variety of beers, wine, and whiskeys, this is the place to look. I was really surprised when they had Hakushu and Yamasaki Japanese Single Malts in their selection. Usually, you don't find these outside of big cities with a significantly more robust scotch whiskey drinking crowd. I also was surprised to run into Gosling Ginger beer in their coolers. I never even knew they made one, so I tried it. There are a lot of nice one of things you don't normally see in most liquor stores, so if you are in the area and needing to pick up a drink for the room, or your place, check it out. It will have at least something to hit the spot. The only thing I noticed was lacking was the sake section, only 2 choices. But hey, they had Japanese whiskey, so that's bonus points... read more

I'll preface my review with the fact that I come from a state that is steeped in the tradition of making life difficult for the sake of making life difficult. Where beer and wine are just not allowed to coexist in the same world (or at least the same store). Good ol' Pennsylvania. That being said, on my recent ramblings through New England I found myself in Newport. I was short on time and my trip was nearing an end, but I wanted to take home some local libations. As was my now common practice, I checked with Yelp to see what you lovelies recommended and came across Island W&S which was only a couple of miles from my hotel. The wine selection is quite broad, although the local wines are limited to a dozen or so varieties which was a tad disappointing. The saving grace was the amazingly large by-the-bottle craft beer selection. With both the wine and the beer you have the option to build your own 6-pack and receive a 10% discount. Well don't mind if I do. Given that time of year (late October) I expected a good deal of seasonal ales and was definitely not disappointed. I managed to spend about 15 minutes contemplating which 6 craft brews to select for my brother, who fancies himself a home brewer, while my husband sifted through the numerous options laid out in front of him. The prices were excellent. The selection can't be beat (unless you're looking for local wines outside of the immediate RI vicinity). Just one more place that makes me want to pack my bags and say adios to this quaker state. read more

I live down the street used to go here all the time, and was a member of their frequent buyer rewards program (I swear I'm not an alcoholic.) I went in the other day with my wife and she didn't bring her wallet along, and they wouldn't sell to me. She's 24 but sometimes doesn't carry her wallet because I buy all the stuff. They said that because we walked in together they wouldn't sell to me even if she left. The man I spoke with didn't care that I shop there all the time and that my wife doesn't drink, they just said sorry we can't sell to you. I understand wanting to avoid getting a ticket but come on this is a stretch. Take care of the regulars right? I'll take my business elsewhere that was very irritating. Fix this. read more

I've been a customer for several years, and have never had a negative experience with the folks who work here. Staff have always been courteous, and pleasant. Prices are competitive with 'big box' stores (Haxton's, 1776, etc.), and selection of scotch, bourbon and Irish whiskey covers a broad price/quality range. Parking can be an issue during peak tourist season, but otherwise, a fine establishment! read more

Wow what lovely people!!! I called when they were closed (unknowingly) and they were just so so kind to me. I went to say thank you and goodnight, but the lady told me if i still had a question she was happy to help.. I ended up asking and she helped so much! Really love this place even more now. Horrible customer service and buying experience. Manager stocking the shelves was unfriendly and seemed bothered to greet us. They would not sell to me because I was with my girlfriend who did not have her ID even though I had my ID. Last time we shopped here though it wasn't a problem...They basically accused me of buying for a minor and humiliated me. Fine. I'll take my business elsewhere. Don't shop here, they don't care about customer experience and will discriminate against customers randomly. Drive the extra 5 minutes to a store that cares about its customers. read more

Located on Broadway next to the hospital, good selection of beer, wine, and spirits. My personal favorite is they DELIVER!!! Anything over $50 brings liquor to your door... nice for when you have a party and run out of alcohol, then no one has to drive to the store. read more
