He's a winner in my book. Last year, in 2025, our team finished in the Top 9 out of 97 teams at Nationals. We all thought we'd run it back this season. This fall, my son was offered a spot on the team. We were ecstatic and couldn't wait for the season to begin. Then my son told me there were three setters on the roster. I thought, "That's interesting." So I called the coach to clarify. I asked, "So my son will have to compete for the setter position?" That's perfectly fine with us. My son relishes a challenge. He has always shown tenacity, energy, intensity, and motivation. When he has to fight for his position, he rises to the occasion. What came next absolutely shocked me. The coach said, "No, he won't play. Even if he shows his abilities, he will not play." I asked, "What are you saying? You're telling me that no matter how hard my son works in practice, no matter how much he improves, he will not play at all?" He replied, "That's correct. I'm already set on my two setters." Let that sink in. No matter how hard he works... No matter how much he improves... No matter what he proves in practice... He will not play. Then why invite him onto the team? Why ask families to commit thousands of dollars if the decision has already been made? Why give a child hope if there was never going to be an opportunity? The only consolation we were given was this: "If one of the setters gets injured, your son MAY have a chance to play." I've been involved in sports for decades. I've played. I've coached. I even run my own youth basketball league. This is the very first time I've ever heard a coach tell a player, before the season even begins, that no matter how hard they work, they will never have an opportunity. This isn't about my son being guaranteed playing time. This isn't about demanding a starting position. This is about telling a child that effort doesn't matter. That sacrifice doesn't matter. That the extra hours, the missed weekends, the long drives, the money parents spend, the belief that hard work creates opportunity... none of it matters because the decision has already been made. What kind of message are we sending our kids? Imagine your own son hearing those words. Imagine explaining to your child that no matter how hard they train, no matter how much they improve, they were never truly given a chance. That breaks a young athlete. I have tremendous respect for Kenji, Coach Patrick, and many others on the SGV staff. This isn't about them. It's about who we entrust to lead and mentor our children. Coaches are supposed to motivate. They're supposed to inspire. They're supposed to teach kids that if you work hard enough, you can earn your opportunity. Not tell them, "You've already lost before you even begin." SGV is one of the best if not "THE BEST"volleyball clubs in the San Gabriel Valley. That's exactly why I'm speaking up. Because reputations aren't built solely on trophies and national rankings. They're built on values. Every parent who writes that check is trusting that their child will be developed, encouraged, challenged, and given an opportunity to earn their place. Not promised a role. Not guaranteed a position. But given a chance. For context, my son plays Varsity at Arcadia High School and was a rotating starting setter as a junior. He isn't asking for anything to be handed to him. He's simply asking for the same thing every young athlete deserves: A chance. And to the owners of SGV: please don't let this become the culture of a club that so many families have trusted and respected. Our kids deserve better. They deserve honesty. They deserve hope. What makes Stormbreaker different is that it was specifically created to solve frustrations that parents and players commonly experience in club volleyball. One of the biggest issues in club volleyball is roster size. Many clubs carry 12-14 players, meaning some girls spend large portions of tournaments on the bench, players worry about being substituted out after mistakes, and teammates feel like competitors fighting for the same playing time. Stormbreaker intentionally keeps rosters smaller, typically around 9-10 players. The girls are not only on the court more often, but they have a defined role and purpose. They are part of every match and rotation rather than wondering if they will see the floor. That consistency allows players to develop confidence through real game experience instead of constantly worrying about being replaced. Another major difference is training volume. Most clubs provide two practices per week. Stormbreaker provides three, plus additional opportunities for clinics, scrimmages, and position-specific development. More touches, more repetitions, and more feedback lead to more growth. Practices are also structured differently. Stormbreaker often has multiple teams training simultaneously with four or more coaches actively involved. Athletes are divided into position groups. Setters with setting coaches, hitters with hitting coaches, liberos on defense and serve receive, middles on middle-specific skills. The specialized instruction and repetition the girls receive is dramatically higher than what we experienced elsewhere. Stormbreaker also has something most clubs don't offer: a dedicated strength and athletic development area called The Vault. The girls participate in structured conditioning sessions focused on athleticism, explosiveness, core strength, injury prevention, and volleyball-specific performance. We've personally watched players become stronger, jump higher, and gain confidence over a single season. We also appreciated that development was built into the club experience rather than requiring constant outside lessons. Between three practices, specialized coaching, strength training, clinics, and additional opportunities for extra reps, our daughter received far more development within the program itself than we experienced elsewhere. Stormbreaker is also not built around a single coach. Jonathan, the club director, is deeply involved and genuinely cares about players and families. He has invested tremendous time studying collegiate, Olympic, and high-level volleyball development systems so coaches work from a shared philosophy. Unlike many clubs where your experience depends almost entirely on one coach, Stormbreaker has worked to build a consistent developmental system. The goal is that players continue progressing regardless of which coach they have because the training philosophy, skill development priorities, and expectations are shared across the club. What impressed me most, however, is the culture. The emphasis is not only on volleyball skills but on character, confidence, resilience, leadership, and personal growth. The club's mission and core values show up in how coaches interact with players, how families support one another, and how girls are encouraged to grow as athletes and young people. Our own team faced plenty of challenges. We had players learning new positions, several first-year club athletes, and periods of instability that could have derailed development. Instead, we watched the girls improve dramatically. They became more skilled, more confident, more competitive, and more resilient. Our daughter gained meaningful court time, developed confidence, and grew more in a single season than we expected. More importantly, she genuinely looked forward to practices and finished the season loving the game even more than when she started. We've spoken with many families from other Stormbreaker teams, and our experience is not unique. Parents consistently share that their daughters improved more in one season than in previous years elsewhere. No club is perfect, and Stormbreaker is still growing. But it was intentionally built to address problems many families have simply accepted as normal in club volleyball. We first heard about this place after seeing many other volleyball players train here, so we decided to give it a try. Our goal was to help our girls improve their strength, speed, and vertical...all things that are very important for volleyball. We started with the 3-months program to see how they liked it, and we've already seen great improvements in their overall athletic performance. Their movements are stronger and more explosive, and we can tell the training is really helping them on the court. The coaches there (Coach Morgan) are professional, knowledgeable, and encouraging. Well, we just found one here! The white level Sunday class is full of kids her age and the skills are appropriate for her age. Also, the program is carefully thought out and promotes skill building, strength and flexibility. The instructor, Ain, is awesome. Upbeat, kind, engaged, explains things well, attentive but not pushy. I'm really happy we found this class and my daughter is too.

Unfortunately outside the building is poorly maintained and trashy with weeds growing out of the sidewalk and debris everywhere. I suggest to the owners that out of respect to the neighbors and to help make other businesses on Allen Ave look nicer that they put more effort into maintaining the exterior of the building.

This location was…read moreunfortunately recommended to us by the Regional Center as a place welcoming of children on the spectrum. Our experience was quite the opposite. Upon signing in for our trial class, we told the instructor our daughter's name. Right as we were about to explain that she is on the spectrum, the instructor told my daughter "You can't talk or what?" When we told him our daughter is nonverbal, he literally laughed and said "Oh." When the website said there would be lots of fun and laughter in class, I didn't realize they meant at the expense of my daughter. Within a few minutes the instructor ran up to us in front of all the other parents and told us we should bring her another day for an adaptive class, but that she could stay for the current class. When we we told him this class was recommended and did not see any information on the website about adaptive classes, he just said oh yeah we don't put that online. Before we attended the class, we made sure to fill out the student profile to make the staff aware of my daughter's diagnosis. Upon reviewing her profile, they could have let us know about all of our options since they do not provide this information online. At one point he started calling my daughter tippy toes. Making a nickname out of something many autistic children struggle with, was upsetting. At the end he said they did not have any time to focus on my daughter because they had too many kids. I never expected the focus to be solely on my daughter (even though the staff definitely made more of an effort to help the youngest gymnasts). I just wanted a place where she could feel included and supported, not made fun of. This class would have been a challenge for anyone being introduced to gymnastics for the first time. Had the staff seemed like they cared about helping my daughter and hadn't laughed at her difficulty speaking, we would have definitely come back for an adaptive class. Please make an attempt to train your staff in interacting with students of all abilities before you create another miserable experience for a special needs family.

I was completely comfortable answering questions about my son's autism and his support needs during the intake call. I understand that these questions are necessary. However, what made the experience uncomfortable was the attitude of the staff member, Jessica. After nearly every answer I gave, she would respond with an annoyed-sounding "Hmm... okay," which came across as dismissive and judgmental. When she asked if my son attends a "typical school," her tone made me feel like I was being interrogated rather than welcomed. It got to the point where I had to ask her if there was an issue because her responses consistently felt rude. She mentioned that she has a lot of experience working with autistic children, but that wasn't reflected in the way she communicated. Families seeking programs for children with autism deserve empathy, patience, and respectful communication--especially during an intake call, which is often the first impression of the organization. Unfortunately, this interaction left me feeling discouraged rather than supported. I probably will just continue swimming classes rather than even starting here if this is how they discriminate against families with children on the spectrum.
