Five star turnedinto one star after my second visit to this place. I wound never return. Overpriced. Bad service.

Our first time at Bistro de La Gare, Rex commented to us by our friend. It's a cute place with old town a charm. Hostess was very sweet and friendly, our server was Fong and she was very friendly, professional and knowledgeable.

Definitely a hidden gem in South Pas! The interior has a Parisian bistro vibe, so cozy and inviting. The service was friendly, the ambiance was lovely, and everything is farm-to-table, so you can really taste the freshness in every dish. I'm a huge fan of foie gras, and I absolutely loved it here. You might call me crazy, but we tried three dishes with foie gras. We started with the foie gras appetizer, it's unlike ordinary liver pâté, it was soft, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth. A good foie gras is like caviar or Japanese A5 wagyu, yes it's pure indulgence. We also tried foie gras in pasta and burgers, and both were flavorful. In my opinion, the best way to enjoy it is grilled. Oh so heavenly! We'll definitely be back to try more!

Had another wonderful birthday dinner at Bistro de la Gare. Everything there is incredible. Finally tried their "death in the afternoon" champagne cocktail, highly recommend. Next time we have to remember to order the filet mignon tartare ahead of time, it's one of our favorites. Such a lovely evening.

I gave my wife a series of restaurant suggestions to go to for celebrating Father's Day. After going through several options, my wife decided she wanted to try a new French restaurant, so we went to Bistro de la Gare in South Pasadena. There was abundant street parking on a Sunday evening. I just came with my wife for date night as I already had a family Father's Day lunch earlier that day. The seating is somewhere between casual and upscale, and was a bit warm for a summer day. The staff were mostly nice, but definitely felt slow to respond to our requests at times. The food felt particularly slow to come out. We ended up sharing an appetizer and an entree. We shared a Gratin D'Aubergine (similar to an eggplant parmesan) and also a braised lamb shank. I was surprised the eggplant dish took 15 minutes and then the lamb shank took 45 minutes. The eggplant was quite nice, with marinara sauce and cheese. The braised lamb shank was solid. The lamb was super tender, and the mashed potatoes and sauce were quite flavorful. The bill was quite pricey for the level of food and service. The service was decent, the food was solid, but I was definitely hoping for higher quality food and service for that type of price. Nonetheless, the food is good.

De la Gare often refers to establishments near a train station and this one is just steps away from the Metro Gold Line stop. A friend of mine raves about this place, and it's been on my list. This charming little French-Italian restaurant offers fine dining in a casual setting. The décor gives off Parisian vibes with its European inspired artwork, French windows, and potted plants in the windowsills. Chef/owner Bruno Morin prepares dishes using organic ingredients selected from the local Farmer's market, which is held weekly outside the front door. My friend and I sat at the bar and ordered drinks while we contemplated what to eat. I decided to try the Une Nuit A St Germain - a Lychee Martini that was light & refreshing. Lorena, the darling bartender, recommended the Horse Soldier Bourbon, so my friend had that on the rocks. While sipping our cocktails, a regular sat next to us at the bar. We started an pleasant conversation with her. The food smelled wonderful, and I noticed how artfully presented each item was as it went by. Unfortunately it was a bit busy, so we opted to skip dinner and had another drink instead. This time I requested a French 75, which was very good. Even though I didn't get to try the food, I made a new friend. Everything in life happens for a reason. My original plans changed, so I ended up at the Bistro. She just got back in town and was going to go somewhere else but decided to come here instead. We both agreed that we'd come back at an earlier time and enjoy a delightful feast. *Street parking Corkage Fee: $35 1st bottle, $45 2nd bottle, 3 or more $100

Food was amazing! I had the beets capaccio, liver, escargot. Main entree, steak was cooked perfectly, the sauce was delicious. Clam linguini definition the spot! I ordered fillet fish as well, was going to get it to go for my daughter and end up eating it!

An amazing meal from start to finish. The food was exceptional, and Chef Bruno was warm, gracious, and so knowledgeable about wine. His recommendations elevated the entire experience. It felt like a culinary dream, and we cannot wait to come back.

I had the BEST birthday dinner here! The staff is so incredible, super kind and accommodating. The ambiance was exactly what I was looking for. Drinks were very well worth it and the food portions surprised me. I already miss the linguine, 100% coming back.

I miss eating French food so much and luckily I remember that I have a legit restaurant about 10 mins away from where I live. Not only the staff is super friendly and descriptive about the menu, their food is legit good , although I can't compare with the one in France, but this is good enough ! Their vibe is so chill and friendly like in Parisian cafe , but we didn't sit outside because California heat in summer is no joke . Parking is plenty on the street.

The fig jam added a sweet and tangy twist that cut through the creaminess. The duck prosciutto was good but sadly only one small slice was provided. - French Onion Soup (4/5): Very hearty and warm dish to start the course. My gf preferred a stronger onion flavor but I found it fine. - Branzino et Ratatouille (4.5/5): Perfectly cooked fish, with distinct aromas from the vegetables and spices. The skin was crispy, but it would have been nicer if it was evenly crispy. Overall very flavorful and a good lighter dish option than the steak frites - Steak Frites (5/5): Ordered this medium rare and was not disappointed. Perfectly cooked and super juicy. The outside of the steak was nicely seared giving it a nicely crisp texture with richer flavors too. Paired super well with the sauce which had a distinct mushroomy flavor to it in addition to the peppercorn. Fries were very generous and crispy. - Creme Brulee (4/5): The Creme Brulee was a bit more runny than we were used to but the flavor was perfect. Breaking through the caramelized sugar was super satisfying. - Cheese Board (3.5/5): Pretty simple cheese board with bread, a fig jam, some nuts, and 2 cheeses. I enjoyed the triple cream cheese a lot as it paired very well with the bread and jam. Overall (5/5): We booked a reservation here on a Friday evening for DineLA back in early Feb but didn't get to posting this till now. The restaurant was pretty vibey and perfect for a date night. We were seated in the corner by the entrance making it feel more private than the other seats in the room, which was nice. It wasn't too loud either. Service was friendly and prompt. The food was very well executed, although at this price range we'd hesitate to try the regular menu. Overall, a very solid experience I'm glad we had!

The decor is very classy and elegant, soft lighting with background piano music but you can still have conversations. They have daily fixe menu specials for Thursdays as well as their regular menu. First timer so we had to try a variety of dishes to get a good feel of their cuisine. Wine and cocktail options: had the Shirotini which is a twist similar to a lemon drop. My friend had the pink crane which is bourbon based. Both cocktails were well balanced and tasty. Appetizers: Their famous ravioli: had very creamy sauce over 4 wobton skin ravioli with plump shrimp inside topped with shiitake mushrooms on top. It's a mini meal in itself! Also tried their grilled octopus, cooked perfectly with a nice crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. The main star was the fried catfish sitting in what tasted like a ponzu sauce and please is big enough to feed 4 people! Also had the scallops which were delicious but truly the catfish stole the show. *The main dishes come with a medley side dish of broccoli, carrots and scalloped potatoes. I remember why I loved this quaint restaurant over 2 decades ago when we used to come for every special occasion. If memory serves me correctly, it's the same host. She was so hospitable and made us feel right at home. Our server was amazing. Gosh, I forgot his name. Tall skinny guy. Nightly specials. Truffle ravioli with spinach ricotta. Delicious. Had to share as it was a bit rich for a starter. Shaved truffles and blanched spinach. 5/5 Chilean Sea Bass 5/5 light and flaky Crème Brûlée with berries and bananas I didn't know I needed until I had the very first bite. Wow. So good and full of vanilla bean specs. Chocolate soufflé was more of flourless chocolate chocolate. Not too rich. Scoop of bold coffee ice cream. I just needed a tad more ice cream to finish the cake with. I didn't get it to try the crepe special since nephew ate most of it. Crispy wonton with poached pear. Raspberry sauce and orange custard was so unique and tasty 5/5 Both Hubs and Bro ordered the Mary's chicken and absolutely loved it. Well seasoned and garnished well. Filet was perfect cooked and seasoned even for an 8 yr old to finish on his own. DD ordered the salmon. It was so tender and fork soft. Her broccoli was so full of flavor and not overly creamy. I remember even saying out loud that this was a more decadent experience than TFL and Per Se without feeling so overstuffed and heavy feeling upon leaving. So glad I found Shiro again. Will definitely return again.

We chose Holy Saints to announce our baby's gender with our parents and we had an amazing time during our intimate dinner here. The restaurant's ambiance was the perfect combination of homey and inviting. It is a smaller place and the number of tables are limited so I highly suggest making a reservation when dining here. During our dinner, it was a bit difficult to have a full blown conversation as the place was packed with guests when we came plus the loud background music that was playing the whole night. Service and food were nothing but amazing! Their menu is very limited. Maybe not everyone will appreciate that, but I think it is more intentional on what is being served to the table. Our highlight of the night was the Grandpa's Pan Roasted Duck Magret Au Poivre for sure. It was so tender on the inside and crispy on the outer edges! Prosciutto was a supplement here and needs it imo for that oomph, otherwise a fine risotto dish but would pass unless it speaks to you - Barnyard Bolognese - a bit underwhelming to start, just too one-note for me, but it eventually grew on me and would get it again if I wanted a rich pasta - Duck Magret Au Poivre - easily my favorite dish here and what I would come back for and recommend for people, tender duck with the right amount of fat and a great sauce. However, I'm sure this restaurant will do fine, as it has been a part of Pasadena for so long. We had a reservation for 7:30pm, and we were seated in the back of the restaurant. I didn't even know they had a back room, as last time we sat in the front. All of the dishes tonight were shared, except for the drink. I had the White Lotus drink, which was very similar to an Aperol Spritz. We shared the Pork Meatballs. These were 5 out of 5. They were so tasty, dense, large and the sauce and spice were perfect. We then shared the Mushroom Gnocchi. This is exactly how it sounds; however, I felt it was definitely lacking flavor, and would give it a 4 out of 5. We then moved on to the main course, which was the Pork Chop with an Apricot Sauce and a herb salad with fruit. I would give this dish a 5 out of 5, excellent. We ended the meal with the Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble. This was kind of the disappointment of the meal. It wasn't bad; however, it was not a crumble; we didn't taste any strawberry or rhubarb. The ice cream on the top was the highlight of this dish. It would get a 2 out of 5. Our server was very nice; however, a little rushed at times, especially during the early part of our service when the restaurant was nearly to capacity. Overall, a good to great visit. This bar is tucked inside Vroman's Bookstore (already one of the most charming and iconic bookstores in the area) so the entire experience feels like stepping into a warm, literary universe. You can browse for a new book, take in the bookstore's atmosphere, and then walk straight into the bar. Honestly, it's the perfect outing. What makes 1894 truly special is how intentionally it celebrates literature. Everything in the bar pays homage to the bookstore. The drink menu is full of clever, book-inspired names. You'll find cocktails like Pride and PearJudice Pride, Fifty Shades of Earl Grey, and other fun literary twists. Every drink feels like a little wink to readers, writers, and book lovers, and it adds such a unique charm to the experience. The vibe is super quaint and warm, dim lighting, and a creative atmosphere that makes you want to stay for hours. The wine is on the pricier side ($19-$21 per glass), but the quality delivers. Customer service was excellent. One of the bartenders spent time chatting with us. He pointed out a chalk artwork behind the bar a dramatic portrait he drew himself featuring expressive, literary-style faces, like Edgar Allan Poe, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, etc. It fits perfectly with the creative, bookish aesthetic of the bar. If you're into books, wine, and unique experiences, 1894 is a spot you absolutely can't miss. Perfect for a date, a solo unwind-with-a-book moment, or a fun night with friends who appreciate a good story and a great drink.

The restaurant/building is large with ample seating in and outdoor. We were seated by the bar area in the back. The hostess and servers were all very nice and came back frequently to check on us. We were informed that the menu recently changed and there were more Cajun dishes on the menu so I was really excited. I got the Ruby to drink and gumbo as my entree and shared the biscuit. I originally planned on getting my own biscuit but was then told that they were quite big so the table ended up sharing. My partner got the squash ribbons. The Ruby almost tasted like just juice so it's easy to drink. Very fruity and summery. The biscuit, we were too excited to eat it and didn't get a picture but it was hot, large, soft, and very comforting. The gumbo was great! It's a very filling dish and was seasoned perfectly. My partner's squash ribbons were very well seasoned with bright, citrusy flavors. It would be perfect on a hot day. The table also got hoe cake, Mac n cheese, corn, and collard greens. Hoe cakes were new to me and they were delicious. It's like a pancake but tasted more corn-y to me. It had a blueberries and pico on top. Greens were very well seasoned and tasty. The Mac n cheese was good but not amazing. All in all, a very filling and satisfying dinner. Would definitely go back for more!
