The flat out reason it is 5 stars I because Summer is a rock star of a therapist. Think of being stretched into a yoga type pose and then her finding the perfect knot to apply acupressure on. It's in an eclectic house with a room in the basement, in an eclectic neighborhood....it's certainly not a spa or massage parlor. I went here a couple years back and was so uneasy about the entire experience. I was almost scared to post this review because of how the man running this business acts. I had a massage here with my fiance and without any amount of exaggeration, I was scared the entire time. The women did an amazing job and I have no complaints about them. My only complaint is that the man running the business is aggressive and intimidating. He was yelling at his dog throughout my entire massage. I was in the basement of his unkempt property, hearing him yelling at his dog the entire time. He also has signs posted in his house/place of business stating that he has a gun on premises. I hope the women working for him are safe! Do NOT go here based on the business owner alone. He is known to harass customers who complain about him online if you go through the other Yelp reviews. I can't say enough nice things about Issan and master massage therapist, Sunny. After one session with her, I was completely transformed. Sunny the masseuse was excellent!! She did a great job loosening my back which has been giving me problems for weeks. I got a 60 Thai massage but with I would have did 90 minutes. The value for price was reasonable. I wish she was available to do home calls. The establishment however was very unkept and the owner Jeffery was rude. I knew it was a home based business before booking and reviews were really high so I went forward. The house the business is in almost looked abandoned given how high the grass and weeds were. Based on recommendations from others in my gym (CrossFit Prime - See my review!) I took a chance on a Thai Massage @ Issan Thai Massage. I'm very glad I went! Issan Thai Massage's business is run out of a nondescript single family home in Elkins Park. I almost thought I was in the wrong place until I saw the small sign on the front door. The massage therapist was running a little late, but was there within 10 minutes. Time to get started! The massage is not like Swedish Massage where you stay in one position. Thai Massage twists you like a pretzel and the masseuse uses all parts of her body - hands, feet, arms, knees, etc. to work your body out. If it got too deep and hurt, she will accommodate with less pressure. She asked several times if things were ok. I've never experienced such strong hands! I was extremely comfortable throughout the massage and it was very professional. Sunny made small talk at times, and it was a nice "get to know you" time. The massage lasted an hour, and was very refreshing. First timers it is $40 and $60 thereafter. However, if you are law enforcement or military, it is always $40. It was recommended to come about every 2 weeks as this is about how long the benefits of a Thai massage last. I don't think I can come that often, but I will absolutely be back! I made an appointment on their website.... received multiple reminders through email and text from them. When the day came I arrived 10 minutes early (drove 45 minutes to get there). Knocked on the door...rang the bell... heard dogs barking... nothing. waited a few minutes.. repeat.. nothing. Call.. no answer. Repeat. Get a text message saying hopefully someone will come out soon. Repeat.. repeat.. stop getting responses from the texts. After waiting about 20 minutes I had to use the restroom so I left. I left a voicemail saying I was leaving to find a restroom and to please call me back so I knew if I should just start driving home. It took me so long to get there it seemed like a waste of time and fuel to leave without what I came for. No answer.. drove home. Sat in traffic on 611. Instead of leaving relaxed, I left upset and angry. As I see it.. they stole 2.5 hours from me. I took off from work and spent money on gas. Someone texted me once I got home and said she ("his girl") must not have known that he made another appointment and he'd "make it up to me" never heard anything else. I waited a bit to write this to see if he really cared or would "make it up to me" but it seems as if he doesn't care. I understand accidents happen.. and I was more than willing to wait.. to come back.. whatever.. but the lack of communication was driving me nuts. I actually had to text "hello?" After sitting there without a response. It would have been better to have gotten no response than one text message response to my voicemail and then silence. I just wanted a return phone call.. It's pretty basic, but that is not what is important. They are both extremely talented and have been doing Thai Yoga Massage for a very long time. They also know all about Reflexology. Sunny noticed the first time that I had some nasal congestion and she did this little thing on my big toes and I thought to myself, "Yeah, ok, this is just silly..." But, as we were leaving, I noticed that I could breath through my nose! Wow! After my first visit - 2 days later - I felt great! This is not a a typical Swedish massage, instead of scented oil's and a light touch you are treated with stretching and pressure via Sonny's masterful understanding of the human muscular skeletal system. While the massages were great, the aesthetics of the home in which the business is held, were not very welcoming. My wife and I recently visited Thailand for a vacation. While we were there, our guide (a Bangkok native) suggested trying Thai massage and gave us a short education on what it is, how it's different, and where Thai people go to be trained to do this type of therapeutic body technique. We tried it in Bangkok and it was outstanding! My wife, who eschews typical western massages, also enjoyed the experience. This is NOT the usual western massage! This is DEEP tissue work and body manipulation, which is challenging to your joints, muscles, and possibly your mind if you are unprepared or if this is not what you want. That said, the massages received in Thailand were wonderful and therapeutic. So much so that I personally had a second before leaving Thailand (20+ hours on an airplane justified this, if justification is required) and my wife and I quickly searched for Thai massage upon returning to Philadelphia. I am very happy to have found that there are massage therapists near my home that practice authentic Thai massage and have been trained properly in Thailand (Wat Po)! I scheduled a 1 hour "first time" session and was treated by Ploy. In all sincerity, this was a far better experience than either of the 2 massages I received in Thailand. By that I mean that Ploy challenged my muscles and joints more than they were challenged by the massage therapists who treated me in Thailand. And that is a good thing from my perspective. Ploy was also pleasant and professional and someone I would wholeheartedly recommend. If you physically hurt and are looking for relief, and are open to other-than-western approaches to treatment, then this may be something you would like to experience. And Issan is, from what my limited experience suggests, the real Thai Massage deal. This business is operated out of what appears to be a private home in the Philadelphia suburbs and so there is a somewhat informal feel to it. This may be slightly off-putting and deserves a mention; but the massage here is worth overlooking that.
