Isshin has honestly become one of those places that locals are proud to show off when friends or family come into town. Worth noting: there are no cooks preparing your food in front of you at the table. Your order is simply brought out to you. One thing that stood out negatively: when placing a takeout order, I was charged $4 for extra Yum Yum sauce. That felt excessive and a bit off-putting for what is typically a complimentary condiment. I went here with my kids for my birthday this year, as I heard it was a great hibachi joint. I was thinking serve at table, ala Benihana or similar, but no dice. I won't rate down for that, as I was not promised anything and I want to be fair. The atmosphere is rather small town Japanese, but that fits Fairview. They have a decent sized sushi bar to the left as you walk in, the seating is to the right. The service was prompt and she did a good job making sure everyone was taken care of. The food? From a hibachi standpoint, it is rather boring. I rarely salt my food and found it was necessary for the hibachi steak. A bit overcooked and a bit too lightly seared for my taste. The veggies were fine (see picture), but the hibachi rice was cooked way ahead of time and was completely underwhelming, to say the least. I find rice to be tricky anyway. Fortunately, they did not cook the sushi rice far ahead of service, as it would have made the sushi taste like a garbage can (aka, Supermarket sushi - and don't write me to say you know where there is good supermarket sushi in Nashville, as you are lying to yourself if you think so - LOL). If you order hibachi, you get a clear beef broth (miso soup with Bento boxes) and a ginger dressing salad. I think the salad dressing had a bit too much mayo, which ended up hiding the ginger. The girls loved their bento boxes and I got the chance to try a bit of the Udon, which was nicely done. And they brought me a bowl of ice cream for my birthday (no annoying singing). Would I return? If I had a friend in Fairview who wanted to, I would probably try again, but I would not order the hibachi. Otherwise, there are better hibachi restaurants in town where they actually cook in front of you, guaranteeing it is very hot when you get it. Plus, you get a show. I love sushi! Isshin is a family owned business in Fairview that just astounds the palate! I've been to some chain sushi and steakhouses, and they are ok, but isshin is at the top of my list for Japanese food. I've been going there for years having both lunch and dinner. Only once have been disappointed in the wait staff, but that was corrected quickly and haven't had a poor experience since. Honestly the best sushi and sashimi in the country as far as I'm concerned. Pretty disappointing, sadly. I wanted to like this place but it lacked flavor, everything was pretty bland, I ordered the Bento box - the California sushi roll and ginger salad were decent, the miso was broth only with little to no green onion and no tofu, the fried rice is missing normal ingredients (no egg/veggies/spice) and is just plain brown rice, my chicken teriyaki was not at all what I expected - it was a thinly sliced chicken breast with a bit of bland teriyaki glaze on it over a bed of barely sautéed onions. Let me start by saying that the inside of the restaurant is nice and clean. Definitely better in the inside than the outside looks like. As for appetizers, I ordered the miso soup and the squid salad. The soup wasn't good. It was extremely watered down and needed heavy salt and pepper just to add some flavor to it. The squid salad was just ok. Not bad but not one I'd order again. My friend ordered the crab rangoons and those were good. I also ordered two sushi rolls. The rock n roll one (pink wrapper) was delicious! I also tried their Nashville roll w the crab salad on top and it was ok. Not bad but not nearly as good as the rock n roll one. I'd come back and try other rolls, but skip the appetizers. Overall not a bad place but not a OMG to die for either. Nashville has better sushi options, but this isn't a bad substitute if you're wanting to stay closer to this area and not venture out to Nashville. praise the lord for this place. The best Asian​ cuisine we've had in Tennessee by far (hard to come by) and thankfully only minutes away. I've only gotten take out so far and it never dissapoints. I always order the steak hibachi and they cook it perfectly at my requested medium rare. It comes with rice (which isn't the gross yellow kind) and sauteed veggies. Soup and salad accompany it as well. The pork gyoza is decent, albeit not the best i've had, and I enjoy the dipping sauce it comes with. We are just passing through and this has great reviews so we tried it. First the good. We both had selections from the hibachi grill. The vegetables, fried rice, soup, and salad were all very good. The hibachi seasoning/sauce was very good. The fried ice cream we had for dessert was amazing. My (half-Asian) husband also ordered sushi, but because it was so busy, the sushi came after we finished our meal. He said it was good, no complaints. Now the bad. The hibachi meats were not cooked to order. We both had steak, one ordered medium and the other medium rare, but they were well done for both of us. The chicken, likewise, was overcooked - dry and tough. It was an acceptable dinner, but we're not likely to go back if we pass through again. read more

I always really enjoy my food here. I guess if I had to give a critique it would be that the price is the same as an actual hibachi restaurant where you also get that entertainment factor. On top of that they 75 cents for 2oz of yum yum sauce. We remedied that problem by buying some from the store and keeping it at home so it's not that big of a deal. So we are pretty frequent customers. The hibachi is good but it's not cooked in front of you which is fine. Sometimes your to go is cold okay that's reasonable. Here's the problem with this place and this is not just a one time issue !!! They hire high school age servers who work and bust their tails to make customers happy and they do a wonderful job. They make this restaurant... now anytime something goes wrong the owner feels the need to take these girls tip money or deduct their paychecks. This is illegal and disgusting! I can't believe that you have to have a server seat you. There were two groups that entered the establishment after my group was seated that were served and no one came to the table that were we were seated at. we sat for a while chatting until we realized that the first group that came in after us was ordering desert that is when we got up and left. Needless to we went to the Mexican restaurant and enjoyed our meal. The next time that I have visitors I know that I will not take them to that establishment. read more

My wife and I decided to try this place for the first time on a Friday night. My wife ordered two sushi rolls, I ordered Chicken and Steak habachi, the soup and salads came out quickly, the clear soup was good, the miso soup has a very seaweed flavor, more than usual. My wife got her sushi in a decent time frame, I did not receive my meal for 24 minutes after my wife received hers. She went ahead and finished before mine was out. She said the sushi was decent. The waitress, who we saw literally twice, didn't seem to really be concerned other than a brief "sorry bout that"when bringing my food out after my wife had finished. My rice was warm but the rest of the food was very cold, vegetables, steak and chicken, all cold. Wife tasted it to make sure I wasn't crazy... sure enough cold. I ordered my steak medium and it was well done. I would've said something to my waitress but didn't see her until she brought the Bill. Still no concern. She is young, not her fault, this is on the owners. Long story short, they need quality control. It's a roll of the dice here apparently. Just expected it to be better. read more
