This is an old fashioned bakery that may not have the cutesy cupcakes or the oodles of truffles, but can make everything else, and they do it very well. Their pastries and doughnuts are to die for, I have a tough decision between the chocolate and jelly filled. Beyond that, their breads are wonderful for everything from sandwiches to garlic bread. I've been visiting Iversen's ever since I was a little girl. The smiley face cookies were my favorite back then but Iversen's is so much more than smiley face cookies. They have everything and have been around for 50 years! I went to this bakery because my boyfriend wanted to get a cake for his mom's birthday. There a few options in the fridge and he selected a strawberry torte. The place is very cute and there were a lot of colorful cookies, danishes, and more on display. I also thought the cake was reasonably price too. The cake itself was tasty. It's the old fashioned bakery that makes you feel like you stepped into the 1950's! The baker is such a nice guy and they know how to get the morning work crowd in and out in hurry. Iversen's has the best chocolate donuts I've ever had, and they are always a HUGE hit at the office. My coworkers are mostly from the northside of the city and they have made note of coming to the southside just for this bakery. The coffeecakes are delicious too! A crowd favorite is the Strawberry Cheesecake. The prices are great, especially for the high quality of food. Iversen's has been a huge hit whenever I have brought it for a group of people, and it is the bakery I will continue going to whenever I have a sweet tooth! read more

Drive by this place everyday and never stopped, usually go to Wolfs, this place is great! Have now been in 3 times, have had their donuts, better than wolfs, pistachio muffins, awesome, almond croissant, delicious and best of all their kolachky cookies, but I don't think they call them that there, but that's what they are and I have never had better. They only make them on Thursdays, so by Friday afternoon it's slim pickins. They are $12 a lb and worth every penny. Have had a chocolate torte there that I probably wouldn't get again, but we still ate all of it and it was good, just not my favorite. I prefer the Dressels whip cream cake at Wolfs for that kind of cake...All in all really good, priced very reasonable, clean, friendly staff. read more

I dIscovered this place about 5 months ago, just by chance, driving through town - what a jewel. I've since been back multiple times. The Swedish cookies and coffe cakes are my favorite, but their bread, doughnuts, tarts and other pastries are also very good. There are only a few wonderful bakeries like Iverson! When you walk in it takes you back to when you were a child and would go to the bakery with your Mom. It has that old world decor it seems to have the aromas built into the walls. The sweet rolls melt in your mouth. The donuts dissolve in your taste buds. And it doesn't feel like you're cheating on a diet because it just melts away and it's gone in a minute! And oh my god please try their apple pies! For the holidays you better call in early. Wasn't really that impressed with this place. The pastries seem like they probably come from a mix, and though they probably are made fresh daily so are the ones at the grocery store. Iversen's is a bakery I judged others against. Their Kringles are most excellent! Donuts are done well and other pastries, rolls and cakes are among the best I have had. Some of their deserts are truly Scandinavian which is becoming a scarcity. The only shortcoming is parking on Western can be difficult. Also, the sign can be tough to see. read more

Been going here for years and always happy with what I get. Small, outdated location but everything is delicious. When my mother was growing up, her parents bought bakery goods here, and when my mom grew up and had her family, she frequented Iversen's. We would eventually move to South Carolina, but when she is able to come back to visit family. She always makes it back to the old bakery to pick up fresh breads and desserts. Went there after hearing about their long history there in Blue Island. Well, I'm afraid I wasn't very impressed. Butter cookies $11.59 A POUND???? Are you kidding me? In a blue collar community like Blue Island, who walks in and buys cookies at nearly $12 a pound? I can get the same kind of butter cookies at Jewel and they taste just as good and they're nearly half the price. Everything else was pricey as well. Apple strudel $7??? Pound Cake almost $5! I think the reason they've stayed around so long is because people in the south suburbs are very set in their ways and they'll go to the same bakery, same church, same barber, same drugstore, same everything for practically their whole lives. They could be going here because their mom did and their grandma did and their aunt did, see what I mean? But it's nothing special in my opinion. read more
