I called and spoke with Mike several months ago when I was told that my transmission might be going out on my 2016 Chevy Silverado. After going over everything that was going on, Mike told me to not waste my money getting it looked and gave me knowledgeable advice about my truck and the transmission issues it has but that my transmison was going out but to drive it until it goes. one week later it went. I took it to the dealership I bought the truck from because they told me they could work with, After going through a huge hassle and a lot of stress I was able to get a new transmission. Less than a month later after being replaced I started filling weird things in the transmission, scared to deal with the dealership again, I called Mike as I had appreciated his honesty and straightforwardness. He told me to bring it over and he would test drive it. After reassuring me of how new transmissions work and what I was feeling I left filling a lot better and less stressed. Took my GMC Yukon XL Denali in a little over a year ago primarily for differential issues. My rear differential was leaking and a previous "repair" at another shop resulted in a continued leak. J & C Automotive took care of the leak. They also found looseness in the steering gear linkage which caused looseness in the steering wheel. Thanks for that. My front differential had whine/whirring noise. I would also experience a light clunk when coming to a stop and sometimes lifting off the throttle and depressing it again. I was concerned about the u joints or possibly the transmission being the issue but neither where found to have a problem. Was told transfer case had a noise but could be addressed it at a later date. Front differential pinion and carrier bearings where changed along with inner axle seals and bearings. The ring and pinion gears where not changed since I was advised that they look fine. Picked up the car and still had a whirring/whine noise that they were aware of and let me know when I picked it up. Fine. I can live with the noise as long as the differential is "repaired". Unfortunately nothing from the repair took care of the light clunk. I could't afford to keep chasing that issue since I just paid $1400 for repairs. Not long after the clunk started to get more pronounced but I could live with it as long as I feathered the throttle and took it easy. I was just started to get ready for the camping season and wanted the ability to pull a travel trailer but was concerned about the clunk being an issue. I did not want to break down while pulling a trailer because of it. I had to decided whether to have this issue fixed finally or purchase a new vehicle. Decided to have it looked at by another automotive shop. They advised me that the differential was causing the clunk. That's odd. I just had it fixed a little over a year ago. I then took it to a highly reputable shop that only does differentials. They took it apart and the pinion bearing was loose and carrier bearing was way out of alignment causing the clunk. They did advise me that the ring and pinion looked fine but I should change them as the noise wasn't fixed by J & C the first time they changed the bearings. This would mean the noise was certainly coming from the ring and pinion gears. I appreciate the repairs J & C Automotive performed that fixed my other issues but after that much money spent and now having another shop do a full rebuild for another $1300 one year later that should have been addressed by J & C the first time I'll have to pass on the other repairs recommended by them. read more

I recently bought an ERA replica 427 SC Cobra that had been sitting in a collector's warehouse for 20 years without being driven. Not surprisingly, lack of exercise resulted in several transmission seals becoming brittle and leaking. On the recommendation of Will at Best Buy Tires in Cameron Park (another outstanding shop!) I made an appointment for transmission service at J&C Automotive in the town of El Dorado. I brought the car in on Monday morning and picked it up today (Thursday) and I could not be happier. Peggy in the front office, Tim and owner/mechanic Mike all treated me like family from the beginning, kept me informed of the progress of the job, and finished it on time, including a few extra custom jobs they found time to perform for me during their busy days. Many auto repair shops are hesitant to work on such unorthodox vehicles, or refuse to work on them altogether. Mike and Tim dug right in, did an outstanding job. If you need routine maintenance on the family sedan or custom work done on an exotic or hot rod, this is your shop. This place is great because they are straight forward, friendly, and actually do good work in a reasonable amount of time. That can be hard to come by, and with an expense like a transmission, it can be daunting. Everything has been working flawlessly after the first try installing it. Previously I had some HACKS telling me that my car was impossible to do a good transmission replace on bc it was the manufacturers bad design.. I toiled for two years with crap work done through a "friends" shop down in sac. Two years of driving there and not having a car for a week... multiple times. Often, I would get my car back, make it 30 miles up 50 and then have to drive it back down bc it was spraying fluid everywhere. The point here is I wanted to save a few bucks and feel confident by going through someone I knew, but in the end, it is best to go through someone QUALIFIED. Transmission work should not be skimped on bc it only costs more time and money in the end if the people doing it are too stupid to replace the broken mounts on it also. I'm not sure how these guys compare to others in price, but I dont care, this is the only place I will have transmission work done up here. I never have to worry about if investing in that kind of work will be worth it now. Plus it has a 3 year warranty. You can do a 3 year warranty instead of 1 year when you do good work instead of trying to crank them out and brush people off. These guys rebuilt my transmission about 5 years ago. After about 30K miles the torque converter went out, not directly related to the work they did- they fixed it no charge under their 3yr/36mo warranty with no hassle or argument. As of now the rebuild one has lasted longer than the original. Just brought it in for intermittent tranny problem, traced down the problem to wirinn and fixed it for under $200, no attempt to make it sound worse than it was. If you need transmission work, bring it to them. read more

These guys do great work. They correctly diagnosed that my rear bearings needed to be replaced. Since the parts alone were $900 from the dealer I purchased after-market Timken bearings and saved ~$600. I did not realize that a lot of places will not put in non-OEM parts. They helped save me a lot of money by installing them for me. My loud humming at 45 and 65 MPH is gone! But the strange thing was that as I was calling around other transmission repair places they knew of J&C and all had good things to say about them. So they have a good rep and I agree. having my transmission repaired at j&c was the worst repair experience I have ever had.After having the transmission repaired there after about 800 miles the torque converter failed dropping transmission fluid on my driveway and car port.this left a ugly stain all up the drive way and carport that will probably never go away,a constant reminder of how much I regret taking my car there. it gets worse. after repairing the transmission the second time the car would not run.Other then the transmission the car ran fine before taking it there.they could not fix it so I took it to my mechanic..after extensive electical diagnostics it was found that the pcm,tcm, and other electrical parts were blown out by a outside electrical influence,probably from not disconnecting the battery?total cost to me for these repairs was $1,300.this was an additional charge to the $3,100.00 for original repair of the tranny.the odometer does not work now or the cruise control.there will be additional charges to repair these.i would suggest that if you need tranny repair go some where else. BIG BIG trouble with these guys. I drove not towed my Mercedes to them for a transmission to find I needed a new one. When I dropped the car off it was in running condition. They installed the new tranny, but when they started the car for a test drive it had a fuel leak, and ran rough to the point of not being able to test drive it. The owner called to tell me he wanted to install a new fuel regulator @ $320. It made no difference in the way the car ran besides fixing the fuel leak. I paid J&C $3755.00 for the work. He recommended taking it to a nearby mechanic to have it looked at. After months of diagnosed hours and unneeded parts, it ran a second bill to $2750. it was J& Cs improper installation that caused the car to be out of time. They sent the second mechanic on a wild goose chase due to the bad install of the transmission. I approached (Mike ) the owner of J&C about the second bill and he failed to satisfy me and pay his fair share. I now am contacting counsel and the bar for resolution. I should have been able to drive my car home after the work J&C did, instead a legal battle will insue. Shameful read more
