Over priced diagnosis. All they did was put a code reader in and charge $180. Honda dealership only charged $95 for a diagnosis.

Prior to bringing my vehicle to Elk Grove Transmission, I'd been recently having an issue with my car's transmission. Pulling/slipping as it shifted from into 2nd and 3rd, and I'd hoped it was just an issue with the solenoids. I took my vehicle into the dealership pertaining to my make and was told, I would need a new transmission and after parts and labor it would cost $7,000+.....I was absolutely shocked at the total cost. Especially since I know what a new transmission for my vehicle would cost up front, and the rebate given when turning in the old transmission. So the total I was quoted the 3x the cost of the actual transmission itself, so I looked for another shop with the hopes of either a better diagnosis and or cost for repairs. I talked to John the owner of Elk Grove Transmission, about the issues I was having and the previous diagnosis. And he told me to bring in my vehicle anytime for a free estimate which has everything off to a great state, since the dealer charged $100+ just for looking at my car. John got back to me I believe the same day that I dropped off my car, and gave me the same bad news about needing a new transmission. But he went into much more detail about the exact issues, than the dealer had which left me with less questions and a better understanding. And the repair costs were MUCH cheaper than what I was previously told, and it only took a couple days total. With ordering the needed parts plus labor to get my vehicle back, and after picking up my car. John told me of Elk Grove Transmissions service and parts warranty, and to bring in my vehicle in 10 days to do a final check which only took 10 mins. This shop does not listen to their customers. I specifically told them I had the new freon in my car that takes the special machine, that's really expensive. They assumed I didn't know what I was talking about and scheduled the appointment. When I got there to drop it off I again told them it takes the new very expensive freon. I got a call two hours later starting they didn't realize my car had the new freon and they don't have the ability to work on my car. I told him that I mentioned it multiple times prior to leaving my car, he said he didn't hear me and that some people say that but don't know what they are talking about. Now I have to find another shop that does actually listen to their customers. read more

I took my 2018 Nissan Rogue to the Elk Grove Nissan in December 2022. I was told that the rear brake needed to be replaced before the next oil change, that I had approximately 5,000 miles left. I put it off. I scheduled an oil change and brake replacement at Elk Grove Transmission & Auto Repair along with a safety inspection. When I picked up my vehicle, I was told that my brakes didn't need to be replaced. That I had plenty of life left in the brake pads. Elk Grove Transmission & Auto Repair could have done work that wasn't needed like the dealership wanted to do, but they did the right thing and not rip off their new customer. My Kia Optima hybrid completely shut down in the midst of traffic, so I had it towed to the dealership in Elk Grove. I was given the diagnosis of a new transmission which would cost me close to $5000. What? I asked how much would they give me for the 2013 Kia Optima if I traded in? I was given a guesstimate of $1000....Shell Shock! I called Elk Grove Transmission and explained the situation. They advised me to tow the vehicle in and they would take a look at it. They did a complete analysis of the vehicle and found nothing wrong with the transmission, but the need for a new battery. Shell Shock in a good way! After trying 3 times to fix it myself, I brought it to Elk Grove Transmission based on their great reviews as well as trying to keep business local . After a couple days, I got a call saying they were able to find a simple fix and they didn't need to tear into the transmission. I was fully expecting a hefty bill and was blown away when they told me there would be no charge. This speaks volumes to their integrity and customer service. I am very pleased with the service, the customer service, the expertise, the workmanship, and the timeliness of the repairs I've had done here. So my only complaint is the work that had to be done, which isn't their fault! Lol My transmission needed serious repair, and rather than beat the other guys quote (which they could have done), they reminded me that if I repaired it, I'd be pouring $2000 into a transmission with 120K miles in it, and that type of transmission is known to blow up after 100K. Rather than waste the two grand on a repair that might not last a week, they argued it would be better in the long run to replace it. Yes it cost a bit more, and I had to jump through a few hoops. Cause who has that kind of money laying around? But I did it, and I'm glad I did. The car is in great shape and now I can have peace of mind knowing my money was well spent, and the car will serve me another 100K hopefully. Sometimes the advice we need the most isn't the advice we want to hear. But those who will give it to you anyway, those are the folks you hang on to. read more

This place has my vote and Buisness for life! I have a Nissan Titan that had a shift solenoid out that no one including future Nissan would replace. John listened to what I had to say and my concerns and offered a free diagnostic. He called me back the day after he received my truck and had bad news (my luck) that my tranny is rare and that yes he is confident that it's the soft solenoid/ valve body. He gave me the no BS answer stating that it was a fifty fifty chance! Yep was actually glad to hear that!! There is a lot more to the whole diagnostic than I care to type about but the fact that he came to me straight and even offered to work with me spoke volumes!! I gave him the green light and had my truck back in hours with no issues! His fifty fifty I based on his experience saying this is it but business sense said CYA! I felt dismissed and like the shop was trying to take advantage of me. I had some thought as to what the issue might be but instead they tried to sell me a new transmission. Went to another shop, Transmissions Only on El Camino in Sacramento and they listened to me during our consultation and looked into exactly what I thought might be the issue, found some additional problems and ultimately got me out the door with my vehicle running strong for around $380. Elk Grove Transmission quoted me $3500-4500 for a new transmission. Seems like they would rather bank on you taking their word as gold and baiting you into an expensive service as opposed to being honest and truly trying to help you. Or.....other shops are just that much better than them and know far more about transmissions. Either way, I saved at least $3000 by going elsewhere. read more

Went in for a new starter, so I thought was the issue. Turned out I had a whole lot going on transmission issue fuel pump and motor mounts. I'm glad I took the vehicle to John he was able to take care of all the issues and pin it down to a faulty wire. Got a quote over the phone. Took the truck in.. quote more than doubled so we decided to just pick the truck up due to that fact. We get the truck back with the transfer case in pieces. Never authorized any work to be done to the transfer case. Charged us a ridiculous amount of money to just get our truck back after we decided to not use there shop.. then laughed at us as we picked the truck up wishing us good luck getting it put back together.. absolutely garbage. I had requested a quote through Yelp and John replied back within 10 min, even after business hours. They are closed on weekends, which is a bummer because that is the only time I am free. However, they have the option to drop off your car and keys (in the mail drop) after hours which is a great option for people like me. I did not have to request time off from work and it was hassle free. I filled out the form and dropped off my car Sunday night. At first I was a little hesitant to leave my car in a parking lot over night, but the neighborhood looked very safe and secluded. I received a the next morning around 9am regarding my car and picked it up after work. The whole process was super fast and efficient! John was really great! I do a lot of driving to and from work and the manual transmission on my Honda finally gave out after 260,000 miles. My wife has a friend who owns his own shop but he was booked solid and suggested I give Elk Grove Transmission a call. I brought my car in and was given a quote and an ETA for completion. Very straight forward, friendly and professional. Transmissions are not cheap to replace and it wasn't but if its done right I'm OK with it. I had the transmission and a new clutch put in. The job was completed a little earlier than expected and the costs were as estimated. When I picked it up I was told to bring it back after about 10 days or 300 miles so they could check everything to ensure it was working perfectly. No appointment necessary or cost for the follow up checkup. Brought her back in and was in and out in less then 30 minutes without a hitch. I think this little step shows how much pride they take in their work and how much they care about the job being done right. She runs like a champ now.
