It had been many years since my visit to the charming hamlet of Hinkley Illinois. We strapped on the feed bag for an early supper so the crowd was small and the service was great. Rebecca was awesome, knowledgeable and friendly. I had their patty melt which was substantial. The "fried potato salad " had a nice mustardy/vinegary zing and a generous portion of bacon bits mixed in. Loved the Malort light fixtures...at least there is ONE redeeming quality to a bottle of Malort. The ambience is what you'd expect in a small town bar/restaurant . Across from us a couple was sharing a pizza and I tried not to be that creeper guy who stares at your food but, damn it looked really good. We will be back for sure! read more

Excelente burger joint! Moon burger was delicious, a combination of ground chuck and bacon !!!. House chips were super thin and crispy just the way they should be. Broccoli cheddar soup was homemade with a very homie flavors. Service was great, our waitress was super friendly, funny and helpful. I'm giving it a 4 starts because they didn't have real mayo, only miracle whip. Other than that we'll be coming back again. read more

We have been regular customers here and have always had good food/service. However tonight we went for dinner and had a horrible experience. We waited 45 minutes for our food and sat there for 2 1/2 hours just to have dinner. I know people are short staffed during covid but this was truly unacceptable and we won't be back anytime soon. GREAT LITTLE BAR WITH FANTASTIC FOOD! Have been here twice so far and each time I have had the Moon Burger. This is ground bacon and ground beef Specially ground for J&K's by Iinboden's in DeKalb. This burger is absolutely delicious! It has a nice smokey flavor with each bite. I highly recommend. I also recommend the tater tots or fried potato salad. Beer is ice cold and staff is very friendly. You will find some locals at the bar but they are friendly and welcoming. Friends of ours highly recommend the fish fry and prime rib. My family and I have been coming here the last couple of weeks. These folks are the real deal. The food is above and beyond what we would expect in chicago. We just left and couldn't believe the meals we had. 3 had prime rib, 2 had burgers and 1 had the salmon salad. Amazing across the board. The prime rib looked and tasted wonderful. Two years ago I rolled my Jeep out west, west of Geneva that is on a perfect Saturday Afternoon. J& K Half Moon was a treat to find and stayed for an amazing Prime Rib dinner with all the fixens for $20. I've been back a few times and last night took a few of my buddies to share the treat I enjoy so much. The owners, Joe and Kathy are welcoming and appreciate those willing to venture west. COVID forced a price increase to $26 for the same special which I'm happy to pay. All the food looks great, we had most of the Apps too. I'm in full support of our local eateries, if you want to try an adventure with a beautiful country drive only 30mins from Geneva, J & K Half Moon is the spot. This is my favorite Friday evening place to have a fish dinner. Tonight was Walley for me and it was great as usual. Service is always good and friendly and the food is very good, they have a small menue and specils every lunch and dinner plus Special Sundays are Oysters any of the popular ways starting at noon ( very popular ). We really like this place. We would be here more however it is across the street from another favorite of ours and we always have to make that "tough" decision. We first went here for the prime rib special (Sat nights). Staff was friendly and talkative. They did not hesitate to answer questions about the food, why there were dollar bills all over the ceiling and future specials. While I would not say it was the best prime rib we have ever had (that is a high bar), it was good and well worth the price. Unfortunately the Cajun potato salad was out, so we had to wait to try that. We went back for the Friday fish fry. Got the same seats, same waitress and same good service and conversation. It was two weeks later and she remembered us and our drink orders. Pretty good for having only been there once and being as busy as they are for the area. At least 4 different types of fish to choose from. Went with the old standard Cod and was not disappointed. The cajun potato salad was great, again that is a high bar we had set. This is a solid neighborhood family place. I would not hesitate bringing any of my granddaughter in and am confident the staff and fellow patrons keep things around here clean (all bets on that may be off during Blackhawk games. For such a small town there are many places to choose from in the Village of Hinckley. I have found the Half moon to be one of the better locations with amazing food and waitresses and bar tenders. The food is outstanding and the fried potatoes salad is a must dish to try. We had the ribs the other night and was totally impressed the ribs are extremely meat and very very little fat. Just do not expect to be eating the meat off the bone because the ribs were cooked perfectly with the perfect seasoning the meat literly just falls off. For a small town tavern and restaurant, the Half Moon is one of our favorites. It's close to home and we love the atmosphere. Prices are average and the food is a hit. My husband and I wanted to try some local food and found this on Yelp. We asked my local family if it was good and they said to give it a try. I'm glad we did! We arrived around 6:30pm on a Saturday night during a hockey game. When you enter, you first go through the bar to get to the back dining area. Let me just say walking through the bar garnered us some stares and if I wasn't with some "locals" I might have been intimidated. Luckily, the dining area was uninhabited and quieter than the bar. Our waitress was quick to bring menus and our drinks. I noticed they had breaded pickle spears and since I'm on a pickle kick decided we had to have them as an appetizer. Oh boy, were they good. (Think deep fried pickle spears and ranch dressing. Mmm.) For dinner, I ordered the half rack of BBQ ribs which came with soup, salad, bread, and choice of potato (baked, fries, or deep fried potato salad). I went with the soup of the day (corn beef and cabbage) and a baked potato because I couldn't wrap my mind around deep fried potato salad. It was definitely way too much food, but good nonetheless. My dining companions and my husband all ordered the ribeye with similar side items. My ribs were so good the meat fell off the bones and I ate the meat all up. I didn't touch much of the potato after digging in to my soup and salad, but it was your standard potato. My husband and companions all said the ribeye was good, but my husband was quick to point out he made a better steak at home. I didn't try any steak so I couldn't comment. Overall, it was a good experience and I'd like to come back and try some more of their BBQ items. read more
