Was up visiting from Tampa & longing for a good Italian sangwheech so after reading some reviews I decided to this joint a try. Boy, I gotta say I was not disappointed as soon as I walked in, I got a sense that I was definitely in the right spot. The look , feel & smell of it immediately brought me back to my cherished Jersey City roots. Everything on display looked fresh & inviting. The guy behind the counter (damn I don't recall his name) was super friendly & helpful in assisting me with my choices. Ordered the Godfather Sammy, roasted peppers, sun dried tomatoes & pulpo salad. Everything was delicious ! I travel will be back to NJ several times a year but I think I found my new "Go to spot" ! Just writing this review & thinking about my next trip up (in 3 days) has me salivating for another trip to this place. I will follow up this review with another very shortly to ensure that this wasn't just catching them on a good day but I'm pretty sure I won't be disappointed. We had a terrible food experience this last Sunday. My boyfriend's father wanted the Sunday Special which he hadn't had in years, but it sounded good to him. So we got that to go. When I was in there, I saw the stuffed bread. After a bit of a conversation about what was in them I opted to get two of them one with broccoli Rabe And one with mixed vegetable vegetables. Boy were we both unhappy with what we got. My boyfriend's father found his braciole and sauce to be so salty it was inedible. He likes food and he is rarely disappointed in an Italian meal. But he said it was so bad that he couldn't even eat it. He ended up throwing it away. I was equally disappointed. Maybe more so. There was no way that vegetable roll was made that day let alone any sooner than two days before. It was so stale. It was hard as a rock. And I hadn't even heated it up. I cut into it right after I brought it home. It also tasted stale. I ended up throwing it away too. Broccoli Rabe roll was a tad better. It wasn't hard as a rock. But it wasn't fresh either. It tasted meh. The only thing I was happy with are the prepackaged taralli. They were imported and were lovely. Go there for the prepackaged imported food products. Don't waste your money on the dicey homemade food experience. read more

I live super close and unsure why I don't go more often. Their menu looks amazing and they have great reviews. Last week they posted in the town facebook group that their special for the day was a Cuban Sandwich. I told my husband and his initial response was: A Cuban sandwich from an Italian spot? Haha but I don't care I was very curious and the photo of the sandwich looked good. I ordered right away. The sandwich exceeded my expectations. It was delicious. Today they posted the special again and I called minutes after to place my order. It was my first time going inside the store. I was greeted right away and they were all friendly with great sense of humor. They have seating inside in addition to outdoor seating. Everything looks clean and well-organized. Went there this past Wednesday and what a pleasant surprise! The people behind the counter could not be more accomodating and friendly. You immediately got a good feeling and the food looked fantastic. I placed my order for cold cuts, and unlike the supermarkets, they know how to slice them to perfection. I looked around and the place was neat, clean, had nice products. The prepared food looked amazing as did their sausage and meat csae. They also had some delicious rolls and Sicilian olive salad. They were nice enough to give me some samples to take home, which was very generous and unexpected. The meatballs were fantastic, the sauce, like our family makes, and I was told the tripe was excellent as well, by my 89 yo mom, which says a lot. No lines to get your food, again like the supermarket, great conversation, and a great experience! I highly recommend the store. read more

A snippet from my most recent visit to J&S - "What's inside the rice balls?" - me (concerned, since one of my kids has food allergies) "Peas, meat, cheese-" - cool worker behind the counter "And rice?" - me You know the old cartoons where the character paints a perfect black circle onto a wall or the ground and can immediately jump into it to disappear? That's EXACTLY what I wanted to do. Why?!  Why did I have to interject THAT - they're called "rice balls" and you (meaning... me!) actually started to query with the word. Horrible. Embarrassing moment aside... This place is bright. It's clean. It's well-stocked. Pricing is good. Crew behind the counter - very cool.  (Especially when they have to deal with knuckleheads and their inane questions.) (Small) parking lot, as well as street parking available. Depending on when you come - the old-timers (probably younger than me, actually) are at the tables shooting the breeze, exactly what you want and need at 'the neighborhood spot'. Prepared foods are...  okay (broccoli rabe was a bit too fibrous for my liking, the pasta in their 'Summer Salad' was molto al dente, the hot sausage was a tad too mild). Amazing "new" shop in this old world community. Met both owners today, who are genuinely good guys and have a true interest in bringing a quality experience to all patrons. Tried their "Mezza Mezza" and their freshly cooked rare roast beef sandwiches today and both were top notch! The flavors of the sausage and meatball in the Mezza Mezza were delicious and definitely homemade! The roast beef was piled so high, I could barely eat it! Excellent! And they'll prepare any sandwich the way you'd like. Also bought 3 lbs of sweet Italian sausage for sausage and peppers I'll cook up over the weekend, and fresh ground beef and beef braciole (more like "bro-ciole" 'cause you can tell they've made these with brotherly love) for my wife's Sunday sauce and fugghettabbout it - don't you know this is your new favorite spot everyone!? Overall a great spot for a quick lunch or dinner. I can see myself stopping in after work to pick up their specials. When I visited I didn't even realize they had daily specials so I got a grilled chicken cutlet sub with fresh mozzarella, broccoli rabe and roasted red peppers. It was on the more expensive side but everything was good and definitely fresh. I also snagged a cannoli bar and that was really delicious, I had never seen that before! For a veggie I got some beet salad and it was good but a little over cooked. I'll definitely try out other salads next time. While visiting my in laws for Thanksgiving, my brother in law suggested that we try J&S. So glad that we did! I really enjoyed the Moe Greene Sandwich. It was exactly what I wanted. The ingredients were so fresh. Loved the prosciutto and mozzarella! My husband really enjoyed the chicken Parmesan sandwich. It was crunchy and the sauce tasted amazing. I am always a sucker for authentic italian food and goods. I felt lucky today finding this place as I was starving and in the mood for a good lunch. I tried their hot sub and got the grilled chicken with fresh mozzarella and roasted peppers. I only oredered half size and was very satisfied after having half of that sandwich. It was delicious and tasted so fresh. I also ordered lobster tail for dessert which was a bomb and I want to try their canolli next time. Just tried the newly opened J&S Pork Store (was formerly Visentini). Met the new owner who has brought in a new menu, including a hot food station, and made some dine-in seating space. There are Italian grocery items including pasta, canned tomatoes (even D.O.P.), other canned/jarred Italian specialties, sweets, olives, deli meats, cheese, sausages, drinks, pasta and more. Today, we tried some cold sandwiches including the Santino + roasted red peppers, oil/vinegar (mortadella and mozz) and Johnny Fontane + sundried tomato, oil/vinegar (prosciutto, capicollo, salami, provolone). Some toppings are included, some are extra cost. Both sandwiches were excellent - the mozzarella is freshly made and the meats were tender and tasty all on a soft long roll (seeded or unseeded options). Order the sandwich first then they add your toppings. The pesto chips were really good - I saw this brand while in Italy recently. The hot food specials looked good - would like to try some of these next time. Today was penne vodka, chicken francese, and pork loin. There were also meatballs, sausage and soups of the day available from the hot counter. They also do catering. It was more busy than I'd seen it before while it was Visentini's. Super fresh italian sandwiches. We had the Moe Green with Roasted Peppers, the Godfather and the Roast Beef. All were great. This is an authentic Italian Pork Store. While we were there many cops came in (sign of a really good food spot). Every cop got the hot food. Most had the meatloaf with gravy and mashed potatoes. Many ppl also ordered the soups. So happy to see the new owners haven't lost that neighborhood feeling! A revamped easier step up entrance is very welcoming. Tables with umbrellas outside and counter and small tables inside are a great addition to the establishment and can be found occupied by the locals enjoying an espresso or sandwich. Formerly known as Visentini Bros, J&S is the place for homemade Italian deliciousness! On a recent stop in I grabbed my favorite fried eggplant cutlets with fresh mozz, arugula and balsamic on a semolina roll. Nothing like a good sandwich! The portions are hearty as usual and the quality of ingredients is top shelf! I also grabbed a premade quart of bolognese sauce which was hearty and fed our family for days. The few grocery shelves are stocked with those hard to find Italian ingredients and dried pastas. As well as fridge and freezer stocked with a nice selection.
