I remember the husband, the Italian music playing, and the lines out the door of the tiny storefront. We would call up and place our order on "calzone day." I first set foot in V&T in 1986 to buy a chicken parm hero for lunch. I have been returning ever since for the past 38 years. I no longer live in New Jersey, but whenever I visit, as I did this past week, V&T is a "must-stop" for me. As far as I'm concerned, Angela and Lucy are the honorary mayors of Hackensack, having fed who knows how many thousands are even tens of thousands of hungry customers for over four decades. There is nothing in their display case -- meatballs, pastas, chicken cutlets, grilled veggies, eggplant parm -- that is not stunningly delicious. There are also terrific Italian salads and obscenely delicious home baked desserts. I hope these two will be serving us for many many years to come. read more

Horrible customer service. My poor 4 year old wanted a ham egg and cheese on a roll and the woman rudely tells me breakfast ends at 11. Okay it was 1pm on a holiday. Not very busy. You can't accommodate a ham egg and cheese?? Horrible. Ended up getting whatever scraps they had left in the trays. Pasta and meatballs NOT even a sliver of bread with the styrofoam plate they serve on. Lol Sauce tasted like it came out of a jar. My sandwich was bland. Never again.. If I could give zero stars I would. Edit to add: we didn't come specifically for breakfast. It just so happened that is what my daughter asked for at the moment. And I understood when I was told that breakfast was over. My issue was the attitude behind it and then all the other things that followed. I am entitled to my opinion. And I don't care how many years someone has been in business. Customer service is paramount. And sorry, you need a new recipe for the sauce. I LOVE that delicious bite of perfectly sliced breaded chicken, with fresh mozzarella and bruschetta on that perfectly crusty bread! Downtown Hackensack has a gem with this place. It is a surprisingly big location inside with a few tables. They had 2 people working behind the counter so a line could form. I went with the classic chicken parm sandwich and it was delicous. The chicken was tender and the sauce had good flavor without being overpowering. The bread is the star too with just the right softness to it but at the same time holding the sandwich together well. The mozzarella hit the spot too. The eggplant parm however wasn't great because it was mushy. Needed a little more texture to it. Can't wait to come back and try more stuff. Prices were fair too. Love it! read more

I got to the deli at 3:00 pm & was told that they were closing early due to the holiday but the guy said let me see what I can make you. I asked him if he can make an Italian sandwich & if he can toast it. When I took it home to eat, it was pretty amazing. The best Italian sandwich that I ever had! I've heard nothing but great things about V&T and I'm happy to report that they do not disappoint. I've ordered the "Bella", a grilled chicken sandwich complete with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and honey mustard; and the "Al Capone" which is like a turkey club sandwich with Russian dressing. I believe it was my first time ever having Russian dressing and I'm sure glad I didn't stray away from V&T's speciality sandwich concoctions. It kinda reminded me of McDonald's mac sauce except, of course, much tastier and fresher. Bread is fresh and portions are portioned to the $7.00-$8.00 price tag. Both sandwiches were exceptional and always look forward to a V&T sandwich for lunch. Only downfall: my bread was soggy by the time it arrived and they aren't the greatest on delivery. It seems like they are constantly busy and it makes managing and sending out delivery orders difficult. Also, they're are times you can't even get through to them on the phone to place your order during lunch hours! Patience wears a little thin when this happens but it's a sacrifice that I'm willing to take in order to enjoy a delicious V&T sandwich! read more

I enjoy a sandwich that doesn't fall apart after the first bite. A line builds up during the lunch rush hour and the service is a bit slow so I usually try to avoid this to be in and out.
