First time visiting J & S Recycling and had a great experience. This location on Yelp brought me to a market, but the actual location is behind the market, so keep driving around the back. A friendly staff person saw that I looked lost and helped me understand the process. Basically you separate your items (aluminum cans, plastic, glass) in the empty receptacles. Located right behind Carnival Market, J & S Recycling Center is super quick in taking our items. There are a few parking spots right up front (I think about 3 to 4 spots) but like I said, they are super quick, as long as you have your items sorted. Rates for refund ain't bad, either. There used to be a lot more recycling centers around San Diego. I feel in the past 10 years, a lot of ones have closed down or locations aren't very convenient to get to during the week. I have been to this location in the past, but it has been a couple of years where I needed to recycle cans or plastic. I managed to leave right after work and get to this location before it closed at 4:30 pm. There were 3 young men working there, they were all very helpful and polite. I recently got a can crusher so that makes things easier for transporting. I had about 2 garbage cans close to full (one for crushed aluminum and one for plastic) . I had about 25 glass bottles as well. I ended up with about $23. This place is so helpful being open on Saturdays. They are located in the alleyway behind the Carnival grocery store. You can always run in there afterwards to pick up some goodies. It's always good to make note of the hours since Google or Yelp is not always up to date. This was a lucky happenstance. I had loaded my car full of CRV only to realize my usual place is randomly closed on Thursdays I found this spot and thought, why not, I'll give it a try. I can honestly say I'll never go anywhere else. I get it, it's recycling, how could it matter TOO much where you go? The difference here is the customer service. The gentleman I had the pleasure of meeting was so, so kind, chatty, helpful (I had two small kids under my feet) and all around a pleasure. It was also comparable in return to the place I had been frequenting. I almost missed it, being that it's BEHIND the grocery store almost tucked away by dumpsters. It's a hard time for many... Today I found this recycling center open behind Carnival Supermarket. I took my 13 year old and he helped me sort out what we had. It was nice to get out of the house for a bit. They were super nice. Very professional. They had antibacterial gel available. Everyone kept a 6 ft distance. OK, so out of all of the recycling places in San Diego I'm gonna have to say that even though this location is hard to fine and a little bit out of the way it is the best place to take your recycling. The guys who work here are absolutely adorable and so sweet and they have the best prices as far as recycling and getting your money back. I would highly recommend coming here or even if it is a little bit out-of-the-way because they're quick and super easy to work with and payout is awesome for the simple thing of recycling. I only recycle because that's my way of saving up a rainy day fund because it's such a simple thing to do especially if you have the room to store your recycling. read more

This place has inconsistent hours of operation. They advertise their hours and then when you show up during hours they are supposed to be open, you find they are not there and the place closed. Their website does not show when they have modified hours of operation and when you call you get a recording. Do yourself a favor and avoid the drive out to J&S (only to find them closed when they should be open) and choose another recycling business. read more

I've been bringing my CRV items to J&S for at least 2 years, if not longer. They are friendly and their space is clean (considering they collect our discardables!). Easy and fast! I went on a Saturday at 3:30pm and parking was full, but a spot opened up within five minutes. Plenty of bins to sort your recyclables. I got about $11 for three full trash bags. They were very helpful and willing to explain their requirements. You can only get paid for recyclables that say "CA CRV" on the label. read more
